In your local newspaper, an article was written about the crimes and harms perpetrated against the older population and the lack of protection for many of them. The article ends with the question, “Who is responsible for protecting these individuals?�

Write a 700- to 1,050-word letter to the editor explaining what responsibilities society has for protecting the rights of older adults.

Choose three of the questions below to address in your letter:

¡ When should families be responsible for related older adults? When should they not? Does this only pertain to immediate family members?


· When should friends or acquaintances be responsible? What if their choices go against the family’s wishes?

· When should hospitals, community service organizations, or other long-term care facilities be allowed to make major decisions for older adult individuals?

· When should the government be responsible for making important decisions? How involved should the government be in protecting the individual?

· Is there ever a circumstance when an older adult does not need outside protection? When would that be? Explain your answers.

Knowing what these documents are, whom the documents help, and what purpose the documents serve is extremely helpful. You use a matrix to create a quick-reference guide for your convenience.

Complete the matrix located on your student website. In the matrix, you must describe various legal documents, identify who might need such documents, and describe how these documents affect the rights of older adults and their loved ones.

Case Study Complaints


Nationwide Training, a company specializing in developing and delivering specialized training programs, has been asked to create a module regarding age discrimination to be used in various states and in many different organizations. The company has hired you to help develop this program and to ensure that the information presented in it is accurate and factual. The company has given you a list of case studies to be used for the training.

Read the case studies and identify instances of age discrimination. Identify the type of age discrimination— housing, employment, education, and so on—and the issues at hand.

Write a 200-word sample letter of complaint for each case that the people involved in each case might write. In your complaint letters, include which type of discrimination is being addressed, the relevant issues from the case, and the applicable laws intended to protect against such abuses.
