Olde Towne East The Olde Towne Times is the quarterly newsletter of the Olde Towne East Neighborhood Association (OTENA). OTENA was established in 1975.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS

Editors

For as long as OTENA has existed, the Olde Towne neighborhood has attracted artists. Initially the attraction was the availability of low cost housing. More recently it has been the availability of affordable office and studio space in our commercial areas. This issue we’re highlighting the arts businesses and artists who have settled in the Olde Towne Quarter business district.. We’re continuing our new Spotlight on Olde Towne feature, presenting a more classically inclined resident artist. And we’re introducing an arts support group that has been actively working in the neighborhood for decades.

The Second Wedensday of each month 7 - 8:30 p.m. Firehouse #12, 734 Oak St. ALL ARE WELCOME!

Summer will feature, as usual, our neighborhood yard sale and annual house tour as well as more activities in the community garden. There’s a lot to do during Olde Towne in the summer but there’s always time to relax in back yards, patios or on front porches and enjoy being with friends and neighbors in Columbus’ best neighborhood.

Letter From the

From the President

TIMES ARE CHANGINGIt’s hard to believe how much Olde Towne East (OTE) has changed and yet stayed the same since I moved here in the mid 80’s. At that time it was an eclectic group of people working on old homes, gathering with fun neighbors for parties, having an occasional drug bust next door, and watching prostitutes cruise Main and Bryden. I can remember when my partner and I were excited about being “in contract” for our first house. So before closing we proudly took his mother to view our new gem and peer through the windows. She saw the house, its surroundings and literally cried. Mom offered us money to “just go to another neighborhood”. We obviously declined and she later learned to love OTE as much as we do. Fast forward 27 years and that house has now sold a couple more times and is currently the home for a great family. It, our street, and all of OTE have transformed into a wonderful neighborhood. We used to get our beer and milk at Olde Towne Beverage that now houses renowned Black Creek Bistro. Our historic jazz bar, The Dell, is now the rocking Carabar. And even Main Street that used to be filled with run down storefronts and prostitutes is now cleaner with many vibrant businesses. One of my old favorites, JP’s Ribs still remains popular.

These changes didn’t happen overnight or on their own; the neighbors banded and worked together. I was an OTENA trustee in the 90’s when we started the first unofficial block watch to chase the prostitutes away. Back then one of our techniques was to write down the license numbers of a John’s car and mail a post card to his home indicating his car was spotted in a known prostitute area. It helped some but in reality the police, Columbus Compact and plenty of your neighbors worked hard to change OTE. Yes, there are still some ‘late night ladies’ around along with my great crazy hippie neighbors. Some things don’t change completely. Through the years I have always been a volunteer of OTENA and, in the past two and a half years, as its president. Hopefully, I have helped Olde Towne East become a little better place. Leading has been a great experience but like my first house it is time for a new steward to take the lead. I am stepping down and letting our new residents pilot us. I will still volunteer and encourage you to do the same to help make our neighborhood an even better place to live and work. Olde Towne East what a great place to live! - MWF

on PARSONS

Olde Towne East has always attracted artists and those who cater to them. This article highlights the various arts businesses and venues located on Parsons Avenue.

BLACK ART PLUS 43 PARSONS AVENUE

Dr. George Miller

What does a man who has “done it all” – PhD professor and teacher at Columbus Technical Institute, an entrepreneur creating businesses such as a car wash, a grocery store and a beauty supply store, and the first African American Director of the Franklin County Welfare Department - do for an encore? For the past 26 years Dr. George Miller has run the iconic Black Art Plus store on the west side of Parsons Avenue north of Oak Street. Without an artistic background how did he get involved in the arts? In 1984, while visiting Los Angeles he was invited to visit a very special store that haunted him. He felt compelled to open a similar one in Columbus. How did he choose Parsons Avenue? While driving around the neighborhood, the mother of a friend pointed to the mock Tudor row of storefronts and said, “That is where you will open your store.” And he did. His business specializes in art that honors the culture and history of marginalized groups, primarily African Americans, but also including Native American and immigrant groups. A stroll through this eclectic enclave will take you from ancient Egypt through WW II up to modern times with images highlighting the contributions of those who might have escaped the history books. Speaking of books – Dr. Miller also carries an impressive array of unusual books that are not easily found at other bookstores. Beautifully carved African sculptures, masks and figurines fill the nooks and crannies. While visual art seems to be the main focus of the store, framing (the “Plus” in the name) is what brings in the bacon. George’s plans for the future include possibly developing an Internet presence.

CAP CITY TATTOO CO. 80 PARSONS AVENUE It was love at first sight! Alli MacGregor fell in love with tattoos at age six when her older brother returned from the service sporting one. She started drawing on all the neighborhood kids and at age 18 looked around for an apprenticeship. At that time women tattoo artists were a rare commodity and it proved impossible for her to get accepted by the male practitioners. She went to art school for three years but left and worked for seven years as a photographer. Finally, after moving back to Atlanta from her native Maine, a mutual friend “bullied” the famous tattoo artist Brandon Bond into hiring her for a few months. Those few months turned into two and a half years where she perfected her art. Now Alli, the only female tattoo shop owner/artist in Columbus, has set up shop on Parsons Avenue. Alli specializes in custom designs and cover up work repairing “scratches” made by amateurs. Alli particularly likes drawing images in black and gray, creating funny, wacky animals and realistic pieces.

Alli MacGregor

Tattoos have a long, distinguished history first appearing millennia ago in the Polynesian Islands. “Tapping” the image using thorns was the primal way of tattooing. Now the tat artist uses a rotary, coil or pneumatic tool to permanently apply the ink. While the equipment design hasn’t changed much over the years the ink has become brighter with new pigment colors. When a customer contacts Alli for a tattoo she will talk with her to find out what images she is considering and decide on a budget. Realism costs more than other images. She will then draw a custom design. In Ohio, tattoo parlors are licensed. Owners and employees must be proficient in first aide and know how to deal safely with blood born pathogens. The license must be posted. Alli’s future plans include redecorating her shop and hiring an assistant tat artist.

CS GALLERY & COBENICK STUDIO 66 PARSONS AVENUE

Daniel Cobenick

What did Daniel Cobenick see in the empty storefronts along the east side of Parsons Avenue south of Oak Street? Having lived in Olde Towne East for the past 15 years he knew the potential of the neighborhood and the price was right. Daniel, from Cambridge, Ohio, attended the Columbus Collage of Art and Design (CCAD) earning a degree in print and papermaking. He continued his studies at OSU as an apprentice/ mentee of Harry Campbell and Bob Tauber. Upon graduation he was invited to design and build the print studio at the Cultural Arts Center downtown. One subject not covered at school was entrepreneurial skills in the arts. Daniel had to learn from trial and error. After having shared gallery space with others he realized he needed total control of the business to really fulfill his passion for representing and helping other artists be successful. In Olde Towne he finally found the space he needed to set up both his own print and papermaking studio and his own unique gallery. The gallery is set up as two rooms with separate functions. The small middle room can be used for one or two person thirty-day shows. The front room houses larger group shows of 12 – 15 artists. Each artist pays a $15.00 fee to hang up to 5 pieces for two weeks. This nominal fee covers advertising and the opening reception food and drinks. Besides offering exhibit space Daniel mentors inexperienced artists on presentation and framing skills. The CS Gallery is not a “niche” gallery and does not specialize in any one artistic style. Up coming shows include an “Open Show” in June and July. This show has no jury and will offer any artist the opportunity to show. Another June show theme is “Back to the Blackboard.” This show features artists working with chalk on a blackboard. The July show “Alchemical” features artists working with all kinds of metal including cast, wielded, fired or wrapped metal. Sounds exciting. Check out cobenickstudios.com/csgallery/ for more information. The other side of the coin is Daniel’s own studio. Here he makes specialized paper for mostly weddings and receptions and uses his bookbinding skills to construct elegant journals, conserve old books and bind doctorial candidate thesis. He will also bind self-published books. My first encounter with Daniel was watching him make colorful papier-mâché works of art that were left to dry in the sun – gorgeous! Daniel’s future plan is to continue to present unique, creative, exciting art and make sure his business flourishes on Parsons Avenue.

THE ROSCOE ROOM 60 Parsons Avenue Art came naturally to Suzanne Gallagher, curator of the Roscoe Room. As a child she got attention in school for her drawing and so practiced it more and more. Her Mom noticed her enthusiasm and paid for private lessons with artist/mentor Barbara Basset in Winter Park, Florida. In class she was classically trained, learned drawing, anatomy, optics, etc. Even so, Suzanne’s first ambition was to be a helicopter pilot like her father. Ms Bassett encouraged her parents to expose her to art museums, theater, and music to develop her aesthetic sensibilities. Suzanne loved it and piloting was forgotten.

Suzanne Gallagher

4

On the advice of her mentor, Suzanne applied for and received a scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD). The CCAD philosophy is based on that of the famous Pratt Institute in New York City and provides for a classical art education. Suzanne is proficient in all artistic styles, but focuses on portraiture. Portraiture requires the artist to delve into the personality and spirit of the sitter. Suzanne takes much time to talk with and observe her subject, taking photographs that reflect various moods and situations in order to render the essence of the person on canvas. Additionally, other forms of custom art can be commissioned, including graphic design and illustrations. Ms Gallagher has won numerous best in show awards for her oil portraits, acrylic landscapes and drawing. This month marks the one-year anniversary of The Roscoe Room. Before opening her studio Suzanne ran the now defunct Nascent Art Gallery in Harrison West and for eighteen years she also supported herself tending bar and waiting tables. She discovered Olde Towne when she answered a call by CS Gallery owner, Daniel Cobenick for an artist to share gallery space. She quickly out grew that 300 square foot space and now rents her current 1,500 square foot space from Henry Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz, says Suzanne, is a wonderful, accommodating landlord and is a true lover of the arts. She feels extraordinarily grateful to the Olde Towne East neighborhood for the welcome she has received.

Besides being a working studio, The Roscoe Room also functions as an art gallery. Suzanne regularly exhibits the works of up to twenty artists who pay a nominal entry fee that covers the opening reception costs and a cash prize to the artist who wins the Public Choice award. She also takes 10% of any sales to cover her rental and utility costs. The space is also available to rent for celebrations and other gatherings. Hours are Wednesdays from noon – 8PM and by appointment, anytime (call 614-202-8106). A future Roscoe Room show entitled “45 Tigers” consisting of the artists’ various interpretation of the theme is scheduled to open August 2nd. Additionally, Suzanne and fellow Olde Towne artists, Gail Larned and Eric Marlowe, are scheduled to show at the Mansfield Arts Center in Mansfield, OH June 30th – August 18th in the main gallery’s “Flower Power” exhibit.

CHOP CHOP WORKSHOP 78 Parsons Avenue Chop Chop Proprietor Craig Dransfield could not be interviewed in time for publication. Internet information indicates that Craig is a skilled designer working in a variety of mediums, including metal, wood and paint and is also an auto mechanic. Recent projects include indoor skateboard bowls, pink bus stops, tree houses, custom welded bookshelves, band album designs, company logos and set designs. For more information about the Chop Chop Workshop send and e-mail to info@chopchopgallery.com

As you can see, Olde Towne East has become a Mecca for outstanding, innovative, cutting edge artists, studios and galleries. Come and check out the Arts on Parsons.

SUMMER TOUR OF

HISTORIC HOMES The tradition continues this year with the Olde Towne East Summer Tour of Historic Homes. What started in 1982 as a small renovation tour for friends and neighbors, has evolved into the premier and most anticipated tour of Victorian homes and gardens in the city of Columbus. Due to our wealth of experience and success designing and managing home tours, OTENA has been invited to expand the tour into the Franklin Park neighborhood which borders Olde Towne East. So this year we will celebrate and showcase the magnificent homes of Franklin Park. Following last year’s successful tour, Jeff Hamilton has again volunteered to co-chair the tour along with newcomer, Nancy Colvin. They are both very excited to be heading up the tour this year. Please join your friends and neighbors on Sunday, July 14th from 1 pm to 6 pm. The tour this year is a wonderful walking tour full of fabulous homes and gardens many of which have never been opened to visitors before. The ticket prices are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the tour. Please check our website for advance ticket locations at www.oldetowneeast.org.

Photography by Michael A. Foley ©2013 www.MichaelAFoley.com

Putting together a tour of homes is not an easy task. It involves a lot of hard work and long hours. Besides the main tour committee chairs, volunteers are needed to help with a variety of tasks, such as, marketing the tour, handing out postcards at various city art shows and other venues, placing posters around town, selling tickets and of course volunteering day of tour in the homes. If you can help with any of these tasks please visit the Olde Towne East website (www.oldetowneast. org) and sign up to volunteer. You may also contact our volunteer coordinator, Dave Dezurko at davedezurko612@hotmail.com. All volunteers will be able to see the tour free of charge and will get to attend the notoriously fantastic volunteer party afterwards. Without the help of our wonderful volunteers, the tour is not a success. So, be a part of a long lasting tradition, and VOLUNTEER. 5

JILL WRIGHT CRIST

FAIR AVENUE

By Dave Fischer

The Word Church, southwest corner of Fair Avenue and Wilson

Jill Wright Crist (aka Miss Jill) and Bruce are a cello-playing duet based in Olde Towne. Miss Jill works the bow while “Bruce,” her oddly/aptly named cello produces the melodramatic tones for which the cello is identified. Inspired by a cello-playing aunt, Jill sought out the instrument as early as the fourth grade. She almost had her ambition thwarted! Because of a process of assigning instruments alphabetically, a surname at the wrong end of the alphabet and a glut of other cello enthusiasts, Jill was relegated to the violin section in her first year of music. However, by the time fifth grade rolled around, Jill moved to the cello and has maintained her love for the instrument ever since. Originally from Colorado, Jill received her Bachelor of Music in cello performance from the University of Northern Colorado. She earned her Masters in Music from The Ohio State University. One of her most memorable performances was when she filled Weigel Auditorium as part of her Masters at OSU. “Pretty awesome and hard to do.” Jill says. Many of her overseas performances in Japan and Austria hold fond memories as well. Her favorite cello piece is always changing but currently she is a big fan of the Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations. Jill maintains her passion for music through teaching and performing. As the Director of Cello, Jill teaches one-on-one and group classes with Suzuki Music Columbus based out of Redeemer Lutheran Church on the East Side. The Suzuki program offers an innovative method of teaching violin, viola, cello and piano to children starting at as young as three or four years old. Families interested in starting a child in Suzuki technique can e-mail Jill at jillith1979@ yahoo.com for more information.

6:30 p.m. Second Monday of January, April, July and October. Jill fills her evenings and weekends performing with several central Ohio symphonies, such as the Newark Granville Symphony Orchestra, the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, and the Ohio Valley Symphony in Gallipolis, Ohio and the Huntington Symphony Orchestra in West Virginia. She is also heavily in demand at weddings both in ensembles and as a solo performer. While classical music is her forte, Jill has arranged compositions for a wide variety of genres, such as rock and roll arrangements for string trios or quartets to play at weddings. Her cello ensemble for advanced students recently played her arrangements of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” Jill lives near Blackburn Park with her husband Russ, son Redmund and three year old golden retriever mix, Jake the Dog. Jill is excited about what the future holds for her new trio ensemble. For more information on Jill’s upcoming performances or cello classes, visit her site at www.jillwrightcrist. webnode.com. You can also access the various websites of the orchestras she plays with to obtain their scheduled performances.
