investigation of the

need

There are a lot of different types of magazines in the market, as well as different topics discussed in them. However, there are hardly any that discuss young adult books, particularly Australian Young Adult. Many of the topics that magazines cover are fashion, good and home economics. I have discussed this with my friends who are fellow readers and they believe it is an exciting project to do and are looking forward to it themselves. Below is an extract from a blog post I wrote announcing my decision to do this project, along with the comments/responses posted by other avid readers. “My highlight this week was deciding to make a bookish magazine for my major design project for school. I’m really excited to start producing though I need to get the theory part of it on point and InDesign is a software I’m still getting to know”

The idea for my project came from my love of reading . There are a lot of ways to get into the young adult reading community, such as Instagram and blogging. Many individuals post their reviews and discussions and pictures online. My project will differ due to the fact that it will be a physical magazine, allowing you to read it like a physical book. It will contain information mostly about the books of the first six months of 2016. For My Major Design Project (MDP), I plan to design, produce and evaluate a magazine that holds information for young adult readers, such as reviews, recommendations, etc. It will be a way to express my creativity. The advantage of a magazine is that it is more flexible than making a website or application, I would have full control of the layout and colour scheme. My target market would be young adult readers. The age can range from fourteen to early twenties. As part of my initial research, I’ve conducted a survey to have an idea of what type of content the target market wants to see. The results, along with a copy of the survey, are below. Conducting this survey allowed me to have some idea of what would go into the magazine and what my target market would want to see the most. I’ve also provided an ‘other’ option where the individual could tell me other content that they would like to see that I have not yet listed. There were a range of different answers that allowed me to have further research opportunities.

WHY

• apps and software that could be used to design the magazine such as InDesign and Microsoft Publisher •how it will be released to the public

• talking to others who have had experiences with different software such as InDesign and Publisher

• to be able to design a user friendly and easy to read magazine that the target market could easily read

• if InDesign or Publisher is a better program to use • different types of applications for the photos being put into the magazine that I will take myself • research different websites where I could get free photos • platforms for a digital magazine

• asking IT experts on opinions • online research • talking to friends who also have an interest in photography • which type of printer would be better for printing with the type of paper that I end up using

• to be able to design the magazine with a user friendly design • to develop my skills • to be able to add photos to the magazine without breaching copyright • to be able to get the best experience out of the software I use

• cutting and pasting • layouts • editing apps such as Photoshop and VSCO Cam

• look at programs online that offer tutorials on how to use designing software • online research

• to be able to set out a user friendly layout for the reader • to produce the product to the best extent

• design layouts for the magazine • colour schemes that work well together • a possible logo • information that will be put into the magazine, such as photos, articles, possible interviews and reviews • fonts • designing covers

• looking at other magazines • conducting surveys to see what the target market would want to see • talking to someone who has some experience in magazine editing • comparing different logos and seeing which type (words/ pictures/mix of both) works best

• to be able to make sure the magazine is easy to read • to find out what type of layouts are being used at the moment (e.g.. contents pages, where the page numbers are located) • to make everything in the magazine stand out

criteria to evaluate

|6

success | function

In order for my product to be successful, it should meet my design brief. It should provide the user with a variety of information regarding young adult books. The information can vary, such as reviews, discussions and recommendations. The magazine should be easy to read and find content. The user should be able to get the information that they want easily, meaning there should be no unnecessary information in the magazine.

| aesthetics In order for my product to be successful, it should be aesthetically pleasing. The cover of the magazine should stand out and should be able to make people want to pick it up and read the content inside. Headings will stand out and the colours will blend well together. and will be simplistic. The layout will be clear and easy to follow, the images will be necessary and will be in high quality so they stand out and are clear.

| impact on invidicuals, society and the environment My project will give individual’s a ‘newsletter’ to read and get information about books of the young adult genre. It should have information that the readers would want to know about. Looking at the survey I conducted, my target market mostly requested reviews and interviews with bloggers and/or authors. The product will be aesthetically pleasing, making it easier and enjoyable to read and go through. The images will also help the reader visualise. This will benefit the user as it has a variety of content about young adult books in one magazine. The magazine will bring readers together by allowing people to see further inside the reading community, it could be relate-able as the user will see other people’s opinions on certain novels and topics. It will be highlighting the best books of the first six months of 2016. My MDP will be physically printed on paper or will b published digitally online. As I am not mass producing my product, this will not have a big effect on the environment as long as it is recycled.

EVALUATION This section of the portfolio helped me develop my ideas and expand on them more. The proposal allowed me to develop on my need gave me a broader idea of what the target market wants and would reach for. The proposal also assisted me in being more organised.

Project Realisation

I finished my proposal later than I thought I would due to my decision of changing my major design project. I realised that my previous proposal could not be done due to the limited access of the right resources and limited time

As I do more progress for my MDP, I will be referring back to my Gantt chart and finance plan. Therefore, up until both my product and portfolio was finished, that’s when I was able to complete project management as estimated.

Due to poor time management and the HSC trial exams, I was not able to achieve my goals. Studying for the exams took priority over term two and the holidays. However I was able to make more adjustments when I extended the development, allowing me to have more evaluation.

Since my project was not finish until the end of term three, I was not able to start realisation at my proposed time as I needed the product with me in order to make a proper evaluation.

I conducted a survey in order to help me decide an appropriate name for my magazine. There were not a lot of votes near the beginning so I left the survey live for longer to get more people to vote. I wanted my photos to be taken in order to leave room for editing and other adjustments. However due to the trials, I did not achieve my planned time I was not able to reach my planned times mostly because of the trial exams and poor time management skills. I had originally planned for everything to be ready so I would have time to study for the trials. However the trial exams took over priority therefore these stages got pushed back. | existing ideas: magazine covers

Key: + positive - minus ! interesting

+ this cover is eye catching, it gives the target audience a good idea of

!

what is inside the magazine the amount of colour and the design of the title ‘VOGUE’ is a bit overwhelming and it makes the word hard to read the shirt worn by the woman on the cover does not fit well with the design of the title while the title is hard to read, altering the design of the title gives excitement to the target audience, possibly leaving them to anticipate what the next issue may look like

+ the facial expression of the woman in the photo catches attention + there are only a few phrases on the cover, leaving room for curiosity as to what else is inside the magazine + the use of contrast of colours blue and orange in the two small paragraphs on the left match each other perfectly - the placement of the words ‘Spring Fling’ at the bottom of the cover seems out of place and differs from the rest of the aspects on the page - the texture, colours and overall design of the title ‘Style’ makes it hard for a person to read ! matching the aesthetics of the woman on the cover to the aspects of the cover (the flowers, butterflies) gives the target audience a feel of what the theme of the magazine is

+ the cover is simple and allows the target audience to have curiosity as to what is inside, prompting them to pick it up and read it + the photo is simple and placed perfectly with the title ‘Sucre’ + the words on the side of the picture do not give much away about what articles / features might be inside the magazine; again prompting the target audience to read it - the photo and the text are horizontal yet are placed vertically on the cover, making it harder the a person to read ! the overall look of the cover is interesting because of the way the photo and text are laid out, while it is difficult to read and catch attention, it is different to others in the market

°Degree of Difference

My project will differ from the covers shown above as the three above are fashion and/or lifestyle magazines. On the cover of my magazine, I would want to use a photo that does not focus on a person but on a book/s. Like the third existing cover (Sucre), I plan on having a simple cover for my project, not giving away too much information as to what is inside.

having the pictures and the text slanted and diagonal may make it difficult for a person to read difficult to navigate as the numbers are in no order there is no consistent colour pattern; some of the headings are coloured while some are black the design idea is different and unique

+ the white text, as opposed to black, makes it easier for the text to be read

+ the heading ‘contents’ makes it clear to the reader about what the information on the page is for

+ the numbers stand out and the horizontal layout makes it easy to navigate; the reader would know which subject is for which page number + the photo used as a background keeps an ongoing theme of the magazine - the phrases under the headings give away more information about - the content in the magazine that could be taking away curiosity

+ there are only a number of words indicating what is on the corresponding page number, leaving curiosity for the reader + the layout is simple; the numbers are next to the subject - the picture on the left seems to be poorly chosen as it is not clear as to what the contents of the round containers are ! the way the text is laid out on the page is different

°Degree of Difference

I would not want to add too much information to the table of contents as I would want the reader to still have curiosity about what is inside. I plan to use simple phrases and/or a few words in my table of contents. I plan to use a photo in my table of contents page/s, keeping the theme of books ongoing.

of this spread, it was a good choice to lower the content of the page as opposed to leaving it at the top and having blank space at the bottom there is very little colour on the page the photo chosen on the left page contrasts too much with the rest of the spread the layout is simple, but plain

+ there is a lot of free space on these two pages, making it easier for everything to be seen

+ the large letter ‘R’ on the left side of the spread adds more character to the overall article and it fills up space + there are paragraphs, making the article easier to read - the title of the article does not stand out ! the water colour splashes allow the spread to have more character and look more aesthetically pleasing

+ the heading of the article stand out with contrasting colours, grabbing attention + the picture on the right page of the spread stands out to the reader, prompting them to read the article if they are browsing through - the pink background makes it a bit difficult to read the brown heading and the main article itself, as ! well as view the small picture on the left the text in the orange box is aligned to the left while the rest of the article is justified, making it inconsistent

there are no paragraphs, making it harder for someone to read the article there is no title the text is wrapped around the woman, an interesting design

°Degree of Difference After looking at these existing layouts, as well as others on the internet and the magazines at home, I plan to stick with a simple and user friendly layout. I want the headings to be clear and the paragraphs of the articles to be justified as it is more aesthetically pleasing and easy to read. I would want the images to be big, possibly take up a whole page, to catch the reader’s attention.

EVALUATION

EVIDENCE OF CREATIVITY

Evidence of creativity allowed me to broaden my idea further. It helped me see the existing ideas out there, see which techniques and design ideas are effective and what could be improved and/or added on. The degree of difference determines the aspects and features that will/could be added and will make sure that my project is new.

consideration of

| 16

design factors | appropriateness of the design solution

My design is appropriate and it solves the problem of needing a magazine for young adult readers. It will be aesthetically pleasing, easy to use and is a functional solution

| needs Consumers will believe they have to have this product because they will believe that they need it to belong to a group (young adult readers) and by keeping up with their peers by purchasing latest products.

| function The product will fulfil its function as it is easy to use and will inform people about most things involving young adult books. No matter the type of distribution or whether it will be printed or not, it will still serve it’s purpose for the target market.

| aesthetics My product will be aesthetically pleasing in order to catch a consumer’s eye. The pages will contain colour that adds emotion to the reader as they are reading the magazine, making sure to keep their curiosity and interest throughout the product.

| use of the design My product will be used by viewing it. No special skills will be required in order to use it as it will have to be read. The group who will use my design will be young adult readers and anyone else who has an interest in reading.

| quality In order for my product to have good quality, it should meet the function perfectly, informing people about young adult books. It should have appropriate information and no necessary content. The content of the magazine should be reliable and the information should be accurate in order for it to be of good quality.

| colour schemes

A colour scheme is a combination of colours used in design for a range of media. In order for me to determine a colour scheme for my product, I have created a mood board. A mood board is an arrangement of images that provokes a particular style and/or concept. I have chosen pictures that I have taken for my personal use and a few images that I found on Pinterest that have the same style and idea as my photos. Since I plan on having a number my photographs on the magazine, I am basing the colour scheme around them. I then put the mood board into an application called Adobe Capture. This app allows its users to create colour schemes. The user can use the phone’s camera to capture scenes around them or use an already existing photo that is on their phone. The app generates a colour scheme using the image it has been given and gives the user five colours. When I have uploaded the mood board into the application, it gave me the colours shown below in the screenshots.

mood board

I am very satisfied with the colours that the application has generated. The dominant colours are a darker shade of red and blue, which fits well for my product. Red has high visibility and is associated with passion. This links well to the product because I have a great passion for reading and so does my target market. Blue is associated with stability and heaven. It is said to have a good effect to the mind and body as it produces a calming effect, which is what most readers feel whilst reading and what I aim my target market would feel whilst reading the magazine. The colour scheme that I will use for the magazine is as shown below, along with their hex codes (a code used in computing applications to create colour).

FEATURES An iOS application that allows its users to take and edit photos, as well as share them online.

POSITIVES • offers a lot of filters • has a variety of tools used for editing photos such as adjusting brightness, contrast and sharpness

NEGATIVES • has limited tools for photo adjustment

VSCO Cam offers a variety of filters and has easy navigation. When testing this application, I moved the dial (the circle shown in the image above) twice to add contrast and once to remove temperature. Furthermore I chose a filter that easily made the photo brighter and more clear to view. The app is user friendly, is in the top 10 applications for iOS devices and will cost nothing because I already own the app for personal use.

FEATURES An iOS application that was created to enhance and touch up portraits of people

POSITIVES

NEGATIVES

• allows users to enhance • the app is more focused details on the images for editing portraits of people • does not have a various selection of filters

Facetune’s main feature is to manipulate images of people, such as adjusting skin colour, brightening teeth and more. It also offers filters and tools that allow the user to adjust details of the image. The application is easy to navigate, has great, positive reviews and will cost nothing as I own the app for personal use. However the app has very little features that will be an advantage in helping me produce my MDP and edit photos properly.

| testing: photo editors (continued...) NAME Afterlight

FEATURES An iOS application that was created to manipulate images. Best known for adding filters than using other photo manipulation tools

POSITIVES • allows users to choose from a variety of filters • has a good range of photo editing tools

NEGATIVES • the app is requires you to pay for the filters • the application itself is not user friendly

Afterlight is quite popular and is used by many for the different filters. I was not able to explore the application much because it is limited as it requires users to pay to have access to some of its features, such as the filters. The app was quiet difficult to use and it does not give it’s users a very broad set of photo editing tools to use compared to other photo editing applications.

| name of the magazine

To help me decide on a name for the magazine, I conducted a survey aiming at my target audience. I chose five names for the magazine, Book Talk, Printed Words, Page 394, Prologue and Bibliophile, and asked people to choose one. The results are below.

“Book Talk”

“Printed Words” “Page 394”

“Prologue” “Epilogue” “Bibliophile”

There were 20 responses in total and the name with the majority of votes is Printed Words, with a number of 17 votes.

| font

In order to start brainstorming ideas on which font to use for the magazine title, I have looked at other existing magazines to see which font types are most common.

Most magazines use two types of fonts for their name: serif and sans serif. Serif is a typeface that has a small projection at the end of letter strokes. While Sans Serif has no projection. It is suggested that when pairing fonts, use a contrast of both typefaces. In other words, if the headings are sans serif, the body should be serif. For the name of the magazine, I decided to use a serif font, since it is more traditional and classic and it is the font that most books use. In order to start deciding which font to use, I have chosen the top six serif fonts that I love and have been using in my everyday and personal life. The fonts that I have chosen, and a view of how the title looks using said font, are below. In order to make an informed decision, I have eliminated Josefin Slab and St Marie as they seem to thin and

will not be able to catch someone’s eye easily. All the fonts are of the same size, 27pt, to see the comparison of size between the different fonts. Bodoni 72 is smaller than the rest, therefore I decided to eliminate it. Vidaloka is too bolded and Lora’s letters are wider in width. Therefore, the font that best suits the magazine name is Playfair Display.

| research: articles

From the survey I conducted regarding the content of the magazine, Interviews is one of the two topics that got the second highest votes (68.18%, as shown below)

There are a lot of interviews that can be conducted for the magazine. I could interview authors and bloggers which are the main targets of interviews when it comes to the young adult book world. However I want my product to be different and evoke interest and curiosity. Therefore I have chosen to have an interview with one or more young adult and children’s publicity manager, one from a different publishing house. The reason I have chosen publicity managers is that they are the ones who read books first before they are published, they help promote and sell books by advertising and building hype. It is a book blogger’s dream to be a young adult publicity manager at a publishing house. Being a book blogger myself, I know a number of publicity managers though I have chosen to interview Sonia from Bloomsbury and Holly from Harper Collins, two of the most famous publishing houses in Australia and all over the world. I want the interview to give an insight into their personalities and what they are like as a reader, but also about their jobs. Publicists are rather busy so I kept a maximum of five questions to ask the two of them to get a fair idea of what being a young adult publicist is. The questions are listed below and I have emailed these questions to both of them.

1. what marketing strategies do you use to promote a new author and/or new novel?

2. how long have you been working at HarperCollins/Bloomsbury? 3. do you get to read the novels first? If so, how hard is it to keep the spoilers? 4. what are the best and not-so-best parts about working as a publicity manager? 5. Favourite YA novel?

application of

| 24

conclusions

| photo editor

After testing the three photo editing applications, I have come to the conclusion that VSCO Cam would be the best application to use to edit my photos for the magazine. The photos that come out after editing in the application are high quality. The app offers a large amount of filters that I already have due to personal use therefore I would not have to spend money on it. It is the best photo editor of the three that brightens the photos in a way that does not make them too obvious, however still keeps it looking high quality.

| name and font of magazine

printed words After conducting the survey, ‘Printed Words’ was the wining choice regarding the name of the magazine. The font that suited this name well is Playfair display, therefore I have made these decisions about my MDP.

| advertisements If not all then most magazines contain advertisements. In order for me to decide which advertisements would go into my magazine, I took a look at the recent events that will be happening when the magazine will supposedly be released to the public. Furthermore I have added pages containing photos of companies that produce items relating to books, for example a mug with a quote relating to books imprinted on it. I have done this not only to keep the target audience well informed, but also to help promote those shops.

application of

conclusions

| articles

I am very active in the social media world of young adult books. I blog about them and I take photos of books for fun and post them online. I am part of their community hence I decided to have an article about my journey through bookstagram (Instagram and Books combined into one word) which is where people post aesthetically pleasing photos of books, showing their appreciation for covers and the effort and care people still have for the printed word. Looking at the survey results below, this article would fall under the category of discussion and bookish photography.

As a part of the article, I decided to include a Question and Answer (Q&A) section in order to answer some questions that the target market has. In order to do so, I have posted a photo on my personal social media account asking followers to comment questions that they have.

| 25

application of

| 26

conclusions | articles The most requested thing according to the survey that I conducted were reviews. Due to me being in year 12 I have not been able to read a book that has been published since January, therefore I turned to the young adult readers that I know and asked for three reviews. In order to choose which reviews got into the magazine, I picked the books that not many people knew about and were not as popular, therefore giving more publicity to those titles and authors. Furthermore, I added social information about the individual who submitted their review in order to give them more publicity. I decided to write an article about book bloggers who should receive more recognition and publicity for having a passion in books. In order to choose which bloggers to feature, I took a look at their online statistics, the follower count and daily views. I chose six bloggers to feature, each with a photo and a small bio so that the audience knows more about them, therefore connecting the community further.

EVALUATION This section of the portfolio allowed me to make crucial decisions about my project. It helped me see which decisions had to be made and when, as well as assist me in seeing the progression of my project. I was able to develop my idea and in some stages change it in order to fit the brief.

practical skills After determining that I was going to use my iPhone to take photos for the magazine, I started to take photos throughout the past months, keeping them simple and somewhat consistent. Books with a few props on a white bedsheet, shot mostly with a bird’s eye view perspective. I kept the photos saved in my camera roll until I found a photo editing software/ application. I used the camera tool on my phone to take the photos.

When I chose VSCO Cam as my photo editing application, I began to edit the photos, keeping the settings consistent. For example, each photo had its brightness adjusted up by 1. These photos were then saved onto my laptop and on my phone for backup. I used this in editing all of the photos I have taken for the project.

In order to add words into the document and style them using fonts, I have used the Type Tool in InDesign.

evidence of

practical skills

continued...

I have used the Opacity tool in InDesign in order to create a lighter and transparent look for a few aspects of my magazine, such as the number one and the open book icon on the image on the left.

The cropping tool in InDesign has the ability to manipulate photos and cut out the parts that I did not want to appear. I used this in a number of photos throughout my magazine.

The place tool in InDesign allows the user to import photos into the document. I used this tool throughout my MDP in order to insert the appropriate photos in my magazine

evidence of

practical skills

The rectangle tool allows users to create a rectangular shape in the document. The ‘apply colour’ tool manipulates the colour of shapes and text. I have used these tools throughout the magazine to add colour and create more character to the magazine.

InDesign allows its users to add automatic page numbers to the document. The tool used to do this is the ‘insert special character’ tool. I have used this in order to add page numbers to the pages in the magazine.

EVALUATION This section of the portfolio allowed me to communicate the skills I have used in order to create my final product. Furthermore it shows what was produced from the conclusions in project development

Whenever an evaluation was carried out throughout the portfolio, it was set over a slightly grey question mark. These ongoing evaluations have helped me ensure that all of my work was on track in terms of the design brief, allowing me to see overall whether the project was meeting my proposal and keeping my time and action plan to date. It helped me make decisions and evaluate my progress in depth.

analysis & evaluation of

functional & aesthetic aspects of the design | functional aspects In terms of the functional aspects of my design, I believe I have met the criteria to evaluate success. It meets the design brief that states that I was going to design, produce and evaluate a magazine that holds information in young adult books. The information does vary, there are a few reviews, discussions though I do not have many recommendations in the magazine. Adding more topics to the magazine, such as recommendations of books, would be an improvement. The magazine is easy to read and user friendly, the table of contents make it easy to navigate and find certain topics that the reader may be interested in, therefore the user is able to get the information they want easily. There is no necessary information or content in the magazine. However the order of the information is mixed and random. An improvement would be to have a proper structure in where everything is in the magazine.

| aesthetic aspects According to my criteria to evaluate success, the magazine should be aesthetically pleasing. The front and back covers are plain and does not really catch the attention of someone passing by. However the title is big and slightly bolded, still catching some attention. The headings inside the magazine stand out and are well placed, allowing the reader to know what the articles are about. The colours used are simple and blend well together all throughout the magazine. The layout is clear, consistent and easy to follow, each article contains necessary images relating to the topic. The images are big, high quality and are clear, allowing them to stand out. In order for the product to improve further, more colour could have been added and still keep a minimalist theme to the magazine. The table of contents could have been at a different layout, making it more aesthetically pleasing.

final evaluation with respect to the MDP’s impact on the

individual, society & the environment | individual One of my project’s purpose is to bring the young adult reading community together. The magazine helps make individual’s become a part of a big community, it keeps them informed about the ‘latest’ books, what to read and a lot more. As the project is online, it is easy to access, allowing individual’s to read it whenever they would like. If a connection to the Internet is unavailable, the individual could download an .epub file that allows them to view the magazine offline on an iOS device. My MDP does inform individuals about books of the young adult genre. It has most of the information that the target audience wants from the survey. Individual’s will have an enjoyable time reading through the magazine as it benefits the user, having a variety of content about young adult books into one magazine

| society The magazine does bring readers together as it allows people to see further inside the young adult reading community. It will be inform-able as the user will see other people’s opinions on certain novels and topics. My MDP will promote reading for young adults, helping them to have a better lifestyle and be more informed.

| environment As my project is web-based and will not be mass produced, it does not have a big impact on the environment. Seeing as how I did not print my project and did not use amounts of paper, it will make the environment cleaner and less polluted. However, my product does not help make people more aware about environmental concerns. Furthermore, the tools and materials that I have used for this project are all digital, therefore not impacting the environment as I produced my product.

relationship of the MDP

to the proposal

In relation to the proposal, my product does address the need of having a magazine whose theme focuses on the young adult reading community. The primary intention was to bring a community together and inform others about the young adult reading community, my magazine meets this intention and it does it well. My product meets the functional and aesthetic criterias in order for it to be successful however some aspects were done poorly, for example the cover is not very eye catching. However the function of my MDP was perfectly met. It allows people to see more inside the young adult readers’ world, seeing the type of books read, jobs concerning the publishing industry and the aesthetics of books. While the target audience for my product are young adult readers, it is still open for anyone to view and read. My product keeps both the young adult reading community and the rest of society well informed about young adult books, which fully meets my design brief.
