The project is located in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. When visiting the site I noticed how as I walked around the whole site there were sections that were much more bio-diverse and had an evident connection with nature as I could hear the birds chirp and the rustling of the palm leaves. However, as I walked further southwest, the nature became lost in the loud noises of traffic and disturbances of a bustling city center. This formed my concept of creating an Urban Oasis, a space in the city that one can re-connect to nature.
The program consists of 240 apartment units, 23,300 sq m of office, 150 hotel units, and 15,200 sq m of retail space. The green entries to the site are connected to the broader green spaces in the urban context.
The design concept is implemented by creating a sloped valley that starts on ground level on the south end, slopes down until you get to the center where it slopes back up. This central low point is a space rich in greenery where people do not hear the hustle and bustle of the city.
Nature is incorporated throughout the design by creating large balconies, outdoor circulation for the retail, and sloped design landscaping.
Located in downtown Champaign, the following project is a community center that is to serve everyone in the community. A community is made up of many diverse parts, while still being united. This community center serves as a space for uniting attributes of individual community members into the overarching community. The public market serves as the unity point as it allows people to bring their diversity of services together to share with the rest of the community.
The market consists of an indoor space, outdoor space but covered by an awning, and individual vendors spread outside. The vendors are designed in a way so that when they are not being used for the market, they can be used by community members as individual pods to work, relax, or socialize.
The public market serves as the unity point as it allows people to bring their diversity of services together to share with the rest of the community.
Variety of shading devices that let winter sun in and block summer sun
A) Screen; B) Roof overhang;
C) Light shelf
Natural Cross Ventilation
Summer sun path from 9am to 12pm
- Solar altitude angle based on summer solstice
Landscape Pavers
- Combination of grass and concrete pavers allows for less impermeable surface resulting in less urban storm water runoff
Structural Lumber
- Production of glulams release less carbon emissions than structural steel or concrete production
- Renewable resource
Thermally Modified Ash Siding
Winter sun path from 9am to 12pm
- Solar altitude angle based on winter solstice
Photo-voltaic Panels
- Roof is angled at 3o degrees, which is optimal for solar panels
- PV panels generate 15.65 kBtu/ sw ft/yr
-Locally sourced
- Durable and weather resistant because of thermal modification
Native
- Tress are native to region and are the same type of trees that the siding was sourced from, thus replanting part of what was cut down
The Northlight Theater of Chicago is relocating to Evanston, Illinois. Everyone goes to a theater to see a great spectacular show, but the audience does not get to see the backstage action. The new Immersive Northlight Theater is meant to allow the community to come, and not only see a show, but see how the actors and crew make the magic happen.
MASSING DIAGRAM
The new theater is immersive as there is a clear transparency between public spaces and animated spaces for the actors. Even a pedestrian passing along the street will be able to see sneak peaks of the behind the stage process as they look into the dressing rooms, costume room, and green room.

The visitor is initially immersed into the making of a show by having clear visual transparency to see people practicing in the rehearsal room as they walk upstairs to the theater.
Located at 44 East Main Street Champaign, Illinois are studio apartments on the fifth floor of The Lincoln Building. The design of the apartment is ADA compliant in addition to being customized for a specific client in mind. The client is a young female dietitian who enjoys growing her own produce and herbs and cooking with her grown food. It was crucial that she had room for her plants in locations that provided adequate sunlight. In addition to a large kitchen space for prepping meals, she requested a spacious dining area.
The goal of the design was to create a peaceful sanctuary that the client can escape from the stress of work by emerging in her cooking and gardening.
Housing is a place people spend a lot of their time, and it is proven that living in relation to the outdoors is beneficial for our health. One aspect of apartment living that is different from single family housing is that there is not always a sense of community, so I wanted to make sure to create spaces that residents could gather. When given the family housing apartment complex, the first thing that inspired the design was the Boneyard Greenway just to the south east of the site.
The concept connects the paths of the Boneyard Greenway to the green spaces of the building. The sidewalks leading to the boneyard inspired the shape of the building and the organic curve on the south side.
The grass area on the ground floor which serves much like a ‘back yard’, The interior courtyard, and the large curving balconies all create spaces that encourage residents to be outdoors and interact with one another.
