‘Turn Off the News (Build A Garden)’ Fantasy Records

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have a piece of advice for their listeners: Turn off the news. But listeners would be wise to get turned on to “Turn Off the News (Build a Garden),” a strong step forward for Nelson and his versatile band. Nelson, the son of country legend Willie Nelson who sounds more than a bit like his famous dad, takes his band on a journey through multiple genres of music on the new album, including country, rock, soul, folk and R&B. Along the way he gets help from a host of A-list stars including his old

man, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow and Kesha. The title track is a standout in a record full of strong songs, with the 30year-old Nelson taking on the role of sage, looking for a way to bring people together in this era of division. “Turn off the news and raise your kids/Give them something to believe in,” he sings. “Teach them how to be good people/Give them hope that they can see.” On the duet “Civilized Hell,” it’s almost hard to tell when Lukas stops and his dad picks it up. But, as they sing about being rebels and liking it, they make clear they have more in common than just their voices. “I ain’t leavin’ this road I know/I ain’t done fightin’ for the freedom I chose,” the 86-year-old Nelson sings. “Can’t put a rope on me/You can’t shoot me down.” Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have been on a roll lately: The strong “Turn Off the News” comes on the heels of their standout work on the “A Star Is Born” soundtrack (they also appear in the film) and the boys will open for the Rolling Stones on their summer tour. — By Scott Bauer, The Associated Press

‘Amadjar’ ANTI-

Tinariwen don’t need to create a mythology for or about themselves. The story of this Western African band of nomadic Tuaregs from Mali includes exile, violent conflicts and an attachment to ancient traditions informed by current affairs. Their latest release, “Amadjar,” is the epitome of desert blues. Recorded under a tent in the sandy outskirts of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, the setting provides a more informal and natural, though far from laid-back, atmosphere. Some songs reflect the seemingly similar challenges humanity is facing around the world. “Taqkal Tarha” says “Nothing has any meaning / Days follow each other and look the same,” while “Wartilla” claims that “The hardest thing is to see love and friendship disappear.” Most, however, make direct and unmistakable allusions to their personal fates and political struggles. “Amalouna” is practically a manifesto — “Today, our future and our hope is an armed return to our homeland” and

“Kel Tinawen” warns that “Evil tongues, you can keep talking / The uprising will be impossible to suppress.” The dominant singing and songwriting is by founder Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni, the resonance of their deep voices magnificently matched and tempered by Lala and Aicha’s backing vocals. The instrumentation, if needed, can be carried on their backs: percussion and a legion of electric and, featuring probably more prominently than on their latest albums, acoustic guitars. Breaking the loneliness of the desert are guests like Mauritania’s Noura Mint Seymali and Jeiche Ould Chighaly, providing a local infusion of passion and skill, and, recorded separately, possibly more familiar names like Warren Ellis, Cass McCombs and Micah Nelson. Listening to “Amadjar” without knowing anything about Tinariwen or surveying the translated lyrics may be moving. NEW YORK (AP) — For a long time, Buku Abi ran away from pursuing music. Although she is the daughter of one of pop music’s most popular and successful singer-songwriters, her father is also among the most infamous: He is R. Kelly, currently in jail, facing multiple charges of sexual abuse and sex trafficking. “I think you get to see a different side of it than somebody who sees it from the outside and gets to see the glitz and glam. I got to see the hell part of it,” said 21year-old Abi, born Joann Kelly, in a recent interview with The Associated Press. “I didn’t want to be in the industry.” Even before she was born, her father was under scrutiny for his interactions with young women: He had secretly married his then-protege, Aaliyah, when the late R&B sensation was just 15 in 1994. But by the time Abi was a

child, while Kelly was still a multiplatinum star raking up hit after hit, he was also on trial, accused of child pornography (he would eventually be acquitted in 2008). Abi said going to public school for the first time as an early teen was challenging — there she heard stories about her father that she had not heard before. “At home it’s normal, you’re living a life with your parents; your dad and mom aren’t going to go into all the bad things that might be going on outside of home,” she said, “but kids in school don’t necessarily care. Fifth and sixth grade is when I started learning the sore part of it, the not so good part. I think that was the hardest part for me because for so long I went with this image of who my dad (was) and what my family (was).” School is where she felt her life truly began: She recalls singing onstage in high school during a performance, which she said “lit-

erally felt like drugs.” “I needed more of this,” she added. “Clearly I can’t keep running from this anymore. Ever since then, I’ve been in it and it’s literally saved my life.” Entering the music business comes with a different challenge for Abi: She can’t escape the fact that R. Kelly is her father. She is no longer in touch with him and says being his daughter is like “a double-edged sword.” Abi decided not to use the name her parents gave her in her career. She settled on the stage name Buku Abi about three years ago after first going by the name Ariiraye. In the last five years she’s been hard at work on her debut EP, “Don’t Call Me,” released this March. Her sister Jaah Kelly produced the album, which echoes SZA and other millennial artists in the alternative R&B world. When it comes to making music, she doesn’t deny that’s where she and her father con-

nect: “There’s a lot about him as an artist that inspires me.” “He has made mistakes in his life and other things that he’s dealing with, but when it comes to that, I can’t take that away from him,” she said. Abi once thought she and her father would mend things. Under her former stage name Ariiraye, she collaborated with him on the song “Wanna Be There,” a plea to restore their broken relationship. It appears on his 2015 album, “The Buffet.” “At that time I was in a place where I was genuinely trying to have a relationship with my father,” she said. “But it was so complicated at that time, as it always is. It was a great experience, I’m glad that I did it, but it just wasn’t like what everybody assumed, and that’s the part that sucks. It wasn’t this big kumbaya moment.” R. Kelly is currently in a Chicago jail. He pleaded not guilty in federal court to charges

that he sexually abused women and girls who attended his concerts there. He has been accused of using his fame to recruit young women and girls into illegal sexual activity, and has also been charged in Chicago and Minnesota for separate incidents. While he had been dogged by allegations that he abused women for years (a charge he denies), scrutiny from January’s highly rated Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly,” which detailed multiple allegations against him, led to new investigations and new charges (among his legal troubles is also a backlog in child support for his children, including Abi). he Altoona Community Theatre (ACT) is bringing to the stage a classic piece with its upcoming show “Lost in Yonkers”. The Pulitzer and multiple Tony award winning play by Neil Simon will run at the Mishler Theatre from Sept. 19-22. The coming-of-age story is set in the 1940s and will be presented at the Mishler how it was originally written by Simon. “Lost in Yonkers” is about two young boys whose mother recently passed away and whose father needs to travel to make money to pay her past medical bills. The young brothers, Arty and Jay, are sent to live with their firm grandmother and their childlike aunt. The duo lean on each other and grow in their responsibilities. ‘It: Chapter Two’ scares up $91 million BY LINDSEY BAHR The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A robust audience turned out to catch “It: Chapter Two” in movie theaters this weekend, but not quite as big as the first. Warner Bros. says Sunday that “It: Chapter Two” earned an estimated $91 million from North American ticket sales in its first weekend. Trailing only its predecessor which

debuted to a record $123.4 million in September 2017, the launch of “It: Chapter Two” is the second highest opening for a horror film and the month of September. Based on Stephen King’s novel, “It: Chapter Two” brings the Losers Club back to Derry 27 years later to take on the demonic clown Pennywise. It was the only major film to open this weekend. “Angel Has Fallen” took a distant second with $6 million and “Good Boys” placed third with $5.4 million.

‘Country Music’ – A Ken Burns epic “Country Music” premieres Sunday on PBS (check local listings).

No matter how you feel about country music, one needn’t be a fan to appreciate “Country Music.” Indeed, Ken Burns’ latest epic, premiering Sunday, Sept. 15, on PBS (check local listings), is an eight-part, 16-hour documentary that explores the history of the genre, from its roots in Appalachia in the 1920s and ‘30s through its evolution in the South, Southwest and Midwest in the mid- and late-20th century to its decidedly more rock-and-roll-like sound of today. Along the way, the documentary tells the stories of the pioneers who helped shape the music, among them Jimmie Rodgers, Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton,

Garth Brooks and the Carter family, whose songs tell the stories of the hardships and joys experienced by ordinary people. “It’s three chords and the truth,” says Burns, quoting legendary songwriter Harlan Howard. “It does not have the sophistication of classical or some forms of jazz but it has the truth. You can hear the lyrics and they’re describing universal human things and we disguise it. We love to pretend that country music is about pick-up trucks and hound dogs and six-packs of beer and good ole’ boys. ... No, that’s a subgenre. What country music talks about are two four-letter words that most of us get uncomfortable talking about, and that’s love and loss.” The film does a good job of explaining the structure of country, with jazz trum-

peter Wynton Marsalis pointing out that country has its roots in blues, folk and jazz. It also explains the origins of elements like the “blue yodel” and the yelps of “A-ha!,” which became staples of early country music. Clips of early performances by Monroe and others bear that out. It also offers up a treasure trove of interviews, including with many of the above. Burns, who grew up working in a record store in his native Ann Arbor, Mich., knew about country but was not a fan. That changed after years of work on this project, which he called “daily humiliations of what I didn’t know.” As to what surprised him most, he says, “Everything.” “The racial component,” he says, “the extent to

which the pantheon of the early days of country music is filled with African-American influence, that the banjo is from Africa. That your strong women from the very beginning and well before anybody in rock and folk is picking up women’s issues, they may not call themselves feminists or talk about women’s liberation. “Loretta Lynn is singing, ‘Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ With Lovin’ on Your Mind’ or ‘The Pill,’ ” he continues. “And I wonder what black eye (the Jefferson Airplane’s) Grace Slick would have gotten if she had been talking about that in her circle. ...” “And (Lynn) says, ‘If you’re talking about your life and you’re telling the truth, it’s going to be country.’ ”
