2014 Azimuth Yearbook

Page 1

D isclai mer This yearbook was produced entirely by students in a learning situation. These students were responsible for layout, copy, and picture selection on each page. Unlike a lot of schools, our pages were sent to the publisher “camera ready, which means that all photos, copy, captions and headlines (using Adobe InDesign) were built at school. Given the limitations of time and budget, it was our goal to give fair and equal coverage to all aspects of school life, August through April, which was our final deadline for a May delivery. Consequently, any omissions or errors are purely accidental and are no way intentional on the part of the yearbook staff, the advisor, or the printer. Finally, every page was proofread before it was sent to the printer. We regret misspelled words, missing punctuation, and misspelled names. We offer our apologies to anyone affected.

Welcome to the 2013-2014 Azimuth! Throughout the process of building this yearbook, the very last thing I wanted to do was actually finish it. It’s been the joy of my year to help capture and present the moments we experienced as an ASMS family. Thank you to everyone who helped! Some say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I hope that when you glance through these pages, more than just the images will resonate. I hope that you will remember the unique high school experience we’ve all been so lucky to have. I’m not sure that there’s another high school that allows students to be so involved. I also don’t know where else in the world that I would become so close with so many classmates. These bonds are hard to break! –Leanna Hamilton, Photography Editor There are few things that compare to compiling a high school yearbook. Perhaps the nearest situation is getting a lobotomy while looking at photographs. Nonetheless, as editors we have certainly grown to enjoy every sort of brain surgery that the student body has attempted to perform on us. After months of taking photos at every event, formatting dozens of layouts, writing goofy articles, and even a few hardware errors, we finally have a finished product.

That product might be terrible or it might be wonderful, but either way it’s too late to change your mind about letting us ruin the yearbook. We mean run! Heck, we ran it spectacularly! As you spend the next few months hunting for errors, know that we made none because we are perfect! As you spend the following 40 years using it as a makeshift coaster, know that we made the cover for that use in mind. Over the subsequent 100 years, know that we intended for the yearbook to get lost. No yearbook will be better at getting lost. If you end up being immortal, hopefully you have something better to do than look at a yearbook. In the end, we are scared to proclaim that this is the ultimate yearbook, but heck we’ll go for it! This is a perFfct yaeRBouk! – Alexander Peeples, Text Editor The creation of this yearbook has definitely been a wild ride! Being the design editor, I was in charge of creating the cover design along with tying it into a theme throughout the book! It truly has been privilege to capture this year with my fellow editors and the staff! We have worked tremendously hard on this book, and we hope all of you as readers enjoy! –Nicholas Davison, Design Editor

Dedication

Larry v. Turner I first met Dr. Turner more than five years ago, as I walked into the school for the first time for a local informational meeting during my eight-grade year. He was clearly on his way home, briefcase and keys in hand, yet he stopped in his tracks to greet me, asked if I knew where I was going, and even stayed for a few more minutes to chat about my own interests and my own ambitions. I wouldn’t find out until after the meeting that the man I met on my way into the building was the president of the school, and wouldn’t find out until much later that he stopped to chat with a prospective despite having a nearly two-hour commute. To me, this unselfish and compassionate use of his time is entirely representative of Dr. Turner’s tenure at our school. Even with a stack of papers the size of a calculus book on his desk, he will not hesitate to push that paper aside and meet with a student in need of his time. If you have a problem, he will do everything in his power to fix it. If nothing can be done, you will not receive a simple “no,” but rather a detailed explanation of why something cannot be changed, and a sincere apology for his inability to do so. During my junior year, I was fortunate enough to participate in Dr. Turner’s special project. He graciously opened up his home to me and the eleven other people on our trip and fed us, providing wisdom and often-humorous anecdotes along the way. Time and time again, I have been truly humbled and amazed at the continued benevolence of a man who has no cause to be humble, yet is anyway. With Dr. Turner’s leave comes not just the loss of a president, but the absence of a true advocate for the students of ASMS, and a man who has put his entire being into

the success of our school itself. What Dr. Turner means to ASMS can only be equaled by what ASMS means to Dr. Turner. –Andrew Beeco Coming from a place where education was not emphasized and most adults did not express concern for the students, encountering Dr. Larry Turner was an eye opener. Being a natural observer, I immediately found Dr. Turner to be extremely kind, genuine, and humble. He showed me that he truly cared about this school and the students here. My first year at ASMS was quite difficult, and there were not many things that actually made me happy to be here, but our President was one of them. He made me realize that I had a purpose for being here. This man has always had a smile and a kind word to say. He has served as a father to us while away from home, a counselor, teacher, and even a friend. His life has served as motivation for me and is a constant reminder that any goal is attainable. My friends and I were joking once and I said, “If Dr. Turner ever did anything wrong I wouldn’t even believe it.” Of course he is not perfect. No one is. But, his character and integrity make him seem very close to it. There are so many other great things that I could say about Dr. Turner, but all in all- he has been nothing but a blessing to the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science. His contributions and love for this institution will always be remembered, and I am beyond grateful that God allowed me to meet such a beautiful person. –Jacelyn Fitch

Fall Term

With school just beginning, fall term was a period of exploration and regrouping. New students began to discover everything that makes ASMS great, just as returning students uncovered new things to grumble about. From Move-In Day to Club Fair, fall term was the perfect time for a fresh start.

7

Move-In Day After a summer away from school, students arrived at ASMS with a mixture of elation and sorrow. Incoming students adjusted to a dorm room for the first time, while returning students mingled with friends they had not seen in a while. All in all, new beginnings and rekindled friendships accompanied the slow-sinking realization that the next summer’s break was a long way off.

Don't Wear This For visual learners, this annual assembly was the ultimate fashion show of awful. From revealing clothing to sagged pants to sleepwear, ASMS seniors donned inappropriate clothes to teach new students the ropes. Don’t worry though, it was all for show. Though it did seem a bit suspicious that so many of them already had the clothing‌

Spirit Week No, this was not the Twilight Zone! The twins, cross-dressers, and zany athletic gear were all part of Spirit Week. Halls competed to see who could get the most residents to comply with the daily themes.

11

Goofy Olympics What do you do if you aren’t an elite athlete in any sport? Make a new sport! Goofy Olympics was the perfect opportunity to represent your hall with a little random talent and a lot of spirit. Almost more fun than the actual events: Scaring the other teams. Hearing ASMS roar! If nothing else, the snacks were enjoyable.

German-American Day

ASMS students participated in festivities to commemorate German-American Day, a holiday observed in October which commemorates a day in 1683 when 13 German families moved to Philadelphia. French and German teacher Muriel Hoequist sponsored the event, which included activities such as dancing, ordering from a menu in German, and eating delicious German food.

Winter Term After one term, every student becomes a seasoned veteran and this year was no different. However, heading into the long winter months, it was important to keep goals in mind as teachers and students worked through the longest of the trimesters. Luckily for everyone, frequent breaks and activities kept the mood light.

Boys Basketball There have been comparisons of some of this year’s male basketball team members to the 1992 Dream Team and even the Mon-Stars of Space Jam Fame. Congratulations to the class of 2014. It was a great accomplishment making it to the end! You put a lot of time and effort into being successful at ASMS. It seemed like just a few days ago was the start of senior year. Everyone said that time would fly by, but you didn’t really notice it all until it was time to walk across the stage.
