Alpha Phis Celebrate Chapter Installation in D.C. By Linda Schnetzer (BO-Bowling Green State)
Oct. 19 was an exciting day for Alpha Phi as it marked the installation of the Fraternity’s 144th active collegiate chapter at The George Washington University (II) and the initiation of nearly 100 collegians and alumnae. The celebration represented the culmination of a year of hard work on behalf of local and regional volunteers, staff and, most importantly, our newest members. The weekend became even more special when sisters discovered an Alpha Phi was getting married in the same hotel the initiation was held. Iota Iotas were excited to be photographed with the bride, Laura Anibal Braceland (BM -Duke), and her silver and bordeaux-clad bridesmaids. Colony Adviser Kelly Benedetti (BO-Bowling Green State) hosted a reception for initiates and their families. Greek Advisor Brad Bishop welcomed the chapter on behalf of the university. Mid Atlantic Region Foundation Liaison June Collins Herron ( -Indiana U. of Pennsylvania) presented a scholarship pin. The highlight of the installation was International Executive Board Member Peg DeChant Thornburg’s (B -Kent State) presentation of the Iota Iota charter to Colony President Zara Dang. Zara, who presented a chapter adviser’s pin to Kelly Benedetti, summed up the experience: “It is not the destination; it is the journey that counts.” Additional gifts were presented by the International Executive Board and Northern Virginia, DC/Maryland and Richmond/Central Virginia alumnae chapters. Forty collegiate chapters, four alumnae chapters and two individuals presented Welcome Dollars to the new chapter.

Special thanks goes to Virginia (FI ), Maryland ( F) and GW members for their help and support, and especially to George Mason (G ) collegians, who conducted Court of Ivy. Thank you also goes to Court of Ivy and installation ceremony team members. Consistent support from these and other area volunteers helped make the colonization a success. The special weekend was one charter members, alumnae initiates and all involved will remember for years to come. Alpha Phi International Fraternity enthusiastically welcomes the Iota Iota chapter and thanks new members and volunteers for their commitment.
