COMMUNITY RECOGNIZES OMICRON
Thanks to the outstanding landscaping work of the Creative Surroundings staff, Missouri (O) chapter received the 2002 Columbia Garden Club award for beautifying the city in November.
The chapter sponsored a Mr. Alpha Phi Pageant in December that also was open to non-Greeks. The pageant idea came from Director of Philanthropy Kristen Swindon and was set in motion with the help of Vice President of Marketing Lisa Feldhaus. –Lisa M. Jessica Shirey was named Homecoming Queen during the university’s Homecoming football game half-time show. Lafayette (HΣ) Eta Sigma sisters participated in a fall self-defense class taught by a retired police officer. Members gained confidence in learning a woman doesn’t have to be a victim in a threatening situation. –Jessica E. Hronich

Senior Katie Reis (Γ-DePauw) is an AllAmerican swimmer (2001-02), has qualified for NCAA Division III Championships for three years (2000-2002) and is among DePauw’s All Time Top Individual Scorers at NCAA Division III Championships. She makes Depauw’s All-Time Top 10 List in seven categories and has broken four school records. “Alpha Phi has allowed me to maintain my dedication to my sport while remaining involved with the chapter,” says Katie, who served as director of finance, corresponding secretary and historian. Katie credits Alpha Phi sisters, who often attend home meets, with her success: “I would not have achieved my swimming success without their friendship and support.”

Pennsylvania (HI) Congratulations to senior Sarah Jordan for receiving the Constance Purkiss Kelly scholarship from the Alpha Phi Foundation. Catherine Cheung, Diana Ricketti, Michelle Mergenthal, Ilana Miller, Blair Wisco, Taylor Terkel, Kristin Meliambro, Sophia Constantinides, Amanda van Scoyoc, Joanna Holsten, Kristen Esares, Elise Colella and Annemarie Fernandes were selected to receive the university’s first annual Greek Academic Achievement awards for their outstanding academic records. Two sisters serve Penn’s Panhellenic council, Anu Singla as vice president of recruitment and Haley Shimizu as civic committee chairwoman. Duquesne (EI) Epsilon Iota boasted 12 sisters on staff for the university’s Orientation 2002, more participants than any other fraternity or sorority. In September, Vice President of Recruitment Michelle Patterson organized a retreat in preparation for fall recruitment. The fun weekend paid off, as the chapter welcomed six new members.
St. Joseph’s (ΘΘ) On Sept. 15, junior Candy Harris participated in the Philadelphia Distance Run, a 13.1 half-marathon race. Candy, who ran competitively in high school, raised money for the Alpha Phi Foundation for motivation in completing the race. She finished in just over two hours and raised more than $450, thanks in part to donations from each Greek organization on campus.
The chapter held its second annual Ivy Cup Volleyball Tournament Oct. 5. More than $2,000 was raised for the Alpha Phi Foundation. Theta Theta sisters are proud of Vice President of Marketing Melissa Striewski and Director of Philanthropy Melinda Richards for their incredible work.
Oregon State (BY) Beta Upsilon women welcome a new house mother and cook. The chapter house kitchen was redecorated, sleeping porch carpeted and the front lawn landscaped. Chapter Adviser Sarah Jespersen Bastian (ΘA-Linfield) and Educational Leadership Consultant Stephanie Rendon (∆E-Iowa and EΘNorthern Iowa) visited during polish week and formal recruitment, helping the chapter quota. Sisters co-hosted Star Search with Sigma Phi Epsilon Nov. 6. Emily Hatch is a member of the OSU dance team. Every member volunteers for community projects such as elementary school lunch buddies and coaching basketball and volleyball for the Corvallis Parks and Recreation Department. –Maryn Goolsby
