President’s Message

Front&Center SUPPORT THE J ON GIVE MIAMI DAY on 11.16.17 Be a part of the most exciting annual giving event in South Florida!

I am so honored to have been elected as President and Board Chair of our JCC. I first stepped foot on this campus 11 years ago when my husband Bob Howard and I enrolled our sons, Max and Jacob, into the J’s ECD. When I was asked to join the J’s Board of Directors nine years ago, I never imagined that one day I would have the honor to serve as President and Board Chair. I am stepping into enormous shoes left by Josh Rader whose steadfast leadership of this organization has resulted in increased membership, an expanded ECD, more programming, and of course, the hosting of our very successful Maccabi Games and ArtsFest. It has been a pleasure to work with Josh over the years. Of course, none of our progress would have been possible without an incredibly dedicated Board of Directors, outstanding staff who are adept at both operating the day to day business at the J and mobilizing in a crisis, and of course our wonderful members. I hope you are on the road to recovery from Hurricane Irma. You may have noticed that our wonderful staff didn’t miss a beat after the storm. They knew that many of you were without power and had cabin-fever, and would be looking for a place to go. Within 24 hours of the passing of the storm, our J had not only re-opened the Fitness Center but offered a mini-camp for kids whose parents needed to return to work before school had reopened. The JCC also had snacks and water available for the community. Special thanks to the members who immediately after the storm brought their chainsaws over and offered to help our staff clear the debris out of the parking lots so that our members could return. This month is the opening of the 37th Annual Alper JCC Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival which has an impressive line up of authors and performers bringing acclaimed writers, journalists, actors and a Supreme Court Justice who have written on a broad range of topics including Islamist radicalism, health, music, WWII spies, as well as comedies and fiction. If you have never attended any of the presentations, don’t miss it! The Womens’ Day Luncheon is always a huge success too. I look forward to keeping you posted of the exciting plans we have in the works for our JCC.

Warmly, Rachel Camber Alper JCC President VOL. XXII, ISSUE II

This year, we will again ignite Greater Miami for 24 hours on November 16. Last year on Give Miami Day 2016, more than 19,000 donors raised a record $9.1 million for 660 local non profit organizations. Become a champion for what matters to you!

Branching Out Your Fitness this Fall by Jasonn Gonazalez Alper JCC Fitness Director

IRMA-GOSH, IT’S ALREADY FALL! Autumn is upon us. Most outside of Florida are raking up a rusty color palette of leaves and twigs. A lot of us inside Florida have our own Fall landscaping, in the fashion of giant homemade potpourri piles compliments of Hurricane Irma. While we were fortunate to not be as affected by the Category 3 hurricane as our neighboring Florida cities, and islands who got hit as strong as a Category 5, the damage was very evident. Well over 4.4 million homes got their electricity

knocked out, and as I mentioned above the massive piles of trees, branches and debris from the storm collected outside homes and businesses -including ours - seem endless. We made every effort to keep our operations running until the very last minute before the storm, and the same effort to safely open our doors to the community just days after the storm to give everyone a place with electricity and water, and a place to just zone out and de-stress. New JCC cellphone charging stations were also installed in our weight and group exercise rooms so members and guests were (and still are) able to charge their mobile devices. Seeing our team of staff and volunteers coming together and literally rolling up our sleeves, whether it was getting our facility back up and running for the community or donating cases of drinking water, was a truly remarkable change of pace. FALL SPECIALS RETURN Fall doesn’t only mark a change in season [and ending to

Hurricane season], but it’s also a time where we get treated. New seasons of our favorite shows return, holiday sales begin and Miami’s temperature drops a couple degrees. Amongst the treats, we are giving away limited edition J Fitness Adidas team duffle bags to new members who sign up for an annual membership. In tradition of our rainy autumn, the colors available are blue, orange and black. For all non-members who helped us out during the Maccabi Games and Arts Fest, we’re offering a free month of membership through the end of October. We sincerely appreciate everybody who helped us make the Games as successful as it was! The specials don’t stop there. Available to both new members, and current members who have either never received personal training services or haven’t trained in more than six months, is a mini-introductory training package. For just $22.50, you will receive one 1-hour initial training session with one of our nationally certified Fitness Specialists and a second

45-minute session! Lastly, yes, we will be running our annual Black Friday special the day after Thanksgiving. As always, we won’t have you waiting outside for us to open at midnight in the freezing hot Miami November weather, but rather keep our doors open for those who simply show up and inquire during our normal early opening hours. Up until then, be sure to burn 2x the amount of calories you normally would by taking advantage of our constantly improving Group Exercise classes, and new Personal Training introductory offer. And ease the eater’s remorse you may be feeling post-Turkey Day. Be sure to follow us on Facebook for the latest on what’s going on at the J. For more info on our specials, feel free to contact our Welcome Desk at x284. Have a marvelous Fall, be the change you wish to see in the world, and most of all – stay healthy.

04 | CenterStage | BOOK FESTIVAL

The 37th Annual Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival The Jewish Book Festival runs from Wednesday, October 18th through Tuesday, November 28th, and brings over one dozen acclaimed writers, journalists, actors and a sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justice to south Florida. The subjects of their books range from Islamist radicalism, links between health and wealth, our interconnected world, music and WWII spies, to the fictional world of thrillers, comedies and novels. All the money in the world doesn’t mean a thing if we can’t get out of bed. And the healthiest body in the world won’t stay that way if we’re frazzled about five figures worth of debt. TODAY Show financial expert Jean Chatzky and the Cleveland Clinic’s chief wellness officer Dr. Michael Roizen, have written AgeProof: Living Longer Without Running Out of Money or Breaking a Hip. The coauthors explain the vital link between health and wealth, are the featured speakers at the 37 Alper JCC Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival’s Women’s Day Luncheon. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer examines the work of our country’s highest court in today’s interconnected world. Various activities, both public and private—from the conduct of national security policy to the conduct of international trade—obliges the Court to understand and consider circumstances beyond America’s borders. Justice Breyer discusses the many ways in which our judges, when interpreting American law, must take ever-greater account of foreign events, law and practices. Stephen Tobolowsky, the versatile character actor who currently appears on The Goldbergs, HBO’s Silicon Valley, and Norman Lear’s new One Day at a Time, presents his latest novel My Adventures With God. His stories are a funny, introspective collection about love, catastrophe, and triumph, all told through the lens of his evolving relationship with the mystery that is “God.” Lisa Lillien author of Hungry Girl Clean & Hungry OBSESSED! has sold millions of books by serving up clever and deliciously easy recipes with low calorie counts, huge portions, and easy-to-find ingredients that are good for you. Keeping in line with the current clean-eating food trend, she takes on comfort and junk foods and creates healthy recipes one can eat clean and stay lean! Composer Steve Dorff is one of the most successful songwriters of the last 25 years, and has penned over 20 Top 10 hits for pop and country artists around the world including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Dolly Parton, Cher, Ringo Starr, and Garth Brooks. While playing the piano, Dorff sings and shares heartfelt, behind the scene stories from his book I Wrote That One, Too . . . VOL. XXII, ISSUE II

Book Club Night features Nicole Krauss, whose achingly beautiful and breathtakingly original novel Forest Dark is recommended as a “must read” by Miami Herald book editor Connie Ogle. The author weaves the stories of two distinctly different individuals, and although the characters never meet, the two each have lifechanging experiences while in Israel. “A brilliant novel. I am full of admiration.” –Philip Roth. Souad Mekhennet, born and educated in Germany and now a Washington Post reporter, has had to balance the two sides of her upbringing – Muslim and Western. In her compelling and evocative memoir, I Was Told to Come Alone, this courageous journalist offers a penetrating look at the roots of Islamist radicalism. MacArthur’s Spies is a thrilling true story of espionage set in the exotic landscape of occupied Manila during World War II. Foreign correspondent Peter Eisner tells the story of three people who courageously fought the Japanese, each in his own way. Abraham Zapruder didn’t know, when he began filming President Kennedy’s motorcade on November 22, 1963, that twenty-six seconds of his home movie would change not only his family’s life but also American culture and history. Now his granddaughter tells the “fascinating and cautionary tale” (The Wall Street Journal) of the Zapruder film and raises some of the most important social, cultural, and moral questions of our time. Georgia Hunter has crafted her own family’s history into a gripping multi-generational novel of the Kruc family, and their astounding capacity to endure the horrors of the twentieth century’s darkest hours. The story begins in 1939, and transports readers from the jazz clubs of Paris to the farthest reaches of the Siberian gulag. Hadassah Magazine ranked this book #2 of the Top Ten Jewish Best Sellers (July 2017). Author appearances for the 37th annual Alper JCC Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival are held at the Alper JCC and throughout the community. For tickets, locations and more information call 305-271-9000 ext. 268 or visit alperjcc.org.

If you’ve never tried it, fear not! We’ll show you how to relax, quiet your mind and try to become calmer, more focused and clearer thinking. It’s so easy to do you’ll wonder why you never tried it before. We invite you to drop into our small group as we utilize various guided meditations and share experiences. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a towel, mat or meditation chair. Suggested donation $5.

For October we will discuss Karolina’s Twins by Ronald Balson. For November we will discuss The Bridge Ladies: A Memoir by Betsy Lerner. Meetings are no charge and open to all. Facilitated by Phyllis Levy.
