Summer Holidays are over and here we are in October with less than 100 days until Christmas and the nights closing in! Welcome to Clare Chambers, who will be writing the Beauty page from now on. Also, welcome to Health Matters, who will also be contributing articles about health and wellbeing, along with some great recipes form Adam Simmonds, Chef at Danesfield House, that are both nutritious and easy to make. Why not give it ago and let us know how you get along. We have a new “What’s going on in Maidenhead” section, so you can find out what is happening all on one page. Check out our fashion pages and see what the trends are for evening wear during the Winter months. Don’t forget we only showcase our local retailers so please tell them where you saw their advert. Did you get the chance to go to the Longridge open day? We did and for the first time ventured out on the river in a dragonboat! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and managed to get quite wet at the same time. My daughter also tried the climbing wall for the first time and managed to get three quarters of the way up. I was very impressed as I have a terrible fear of heights. A fantastic facility that should be enjoyed by all. In our travel section we have some last minute deals for those of you wishing to get away now the schools are back. Don’t forget to enter our competition on page 30. Our next issue will be December/January, so if you ‘d like to contribute or advertise in our next issue then give us a call. We are always happy to hear form you. Till next time and Happy Reading..........

Push the Boat out this Christmas

A

re you one of the many company’s looking for a unique experience for your staff at Christmas?

Whether it’s a party of 150 or just 2 then French Brothers can cater for your every need. With Christmas fast approaching we are organising special events for smaller groups to join others at Runnymede boathouse in our Christmas joiner parties on various dates in December. Or if you are a larger company why not hire your own boat for a Christmas party package tailored especially for you. Here is one of the many satisfied customers account of their experience on the river.

‘We arrived at Windsor promenade full of Christmas cheer and were warmly greeted by a friendly crew and glass of delicious mulled wine. The boat was superbly decorated with festive decorations and lights it really did look great. With everyone on board we set of up the picturesque royal river Thames. As the sun was setting we were treated to a full 3 course meal with all the trimmings. I felt like I couldn’t move but the next stop was the dance floor. We hit the top deck and boogied to our hearts content to our very own dj playing all of our requests no matter how cheesy. With having a wonderful meal, a fully stocked bar and a lot of dancing the 4 hours soon whizzed by and we were back at Windsor promenade much to soon but we all agreed it was the best Christmas party we’ve had. I want to thank French brothers for being both professional and dedicated to our needs it’s not easy nowadays to find something that is unique and affordable, but this is certainly that. We will definitely be returning to French Brothers, infact we have already booked, and are really looking forward to it.”

Autumn Pear Crumble

Adam Simmonds,

Chef Danesfield House Hotel This crumble is perfect for this time of year to boost energy levels

INGREDIENTS: Pear Compote 6-8 Ripe Pears – (Williams variety) 100ml Water 6g Fructose 30g Chopped Walnut Crumble Topping 125g Ground Almonds 125g Rolled Oats 30g Flour 95g Butter, Firm 100g Fructose 30g Walnut Oil

For the Compote

For the Crumble

To Build

1.

1.

1.

Pre-heat the oven to 200°c

Place all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl

2. Peel and quarter the pears. Remove the core and dice into 1cm pieces

2. Add the butter and rub in with your finger tips

3. Line a suitable size pan with tin foil

3. Add the walnut oil and continue to rub in

4. Put the pear dice and water inside the lined pan close the foil to create a parcel

4. Mixture should look quite fine but will clump together when squeezed between your fingers

5. Cook for approximately 25 minutes at 200ºc, this will depend on the ripeness of the pears

3. Cover with a good layer of the crumble topping 4. Place under a low grill until golden brown in colour

6. Cook at 160ºc for 10-12 minutes or light golden brown in colour 7.

Leave to cool

• You’ll notice that fructose has been used in place of table sugar (sucrose). Fructose is the sugar from fruit. It is sweeter than sucrose so you need less of it. It also breaks down more slowly into energy so will keep you going for longer. • Eating sources of protein and or fibre alongside sugary/sweet foods also slows down the release of energy into the blood stream. • Nuts are a great source of protein and of essential fats, whilst oats are a source of fibre and really filling. • Essential fats are also necessary for managing stress hormone production i.e. keeping stress in balance. • The walnuts and their oil in this recipe add a rich source of omegas 3 and omega 6 , both essential fats. • Altogether this is a healthy and energy giving dessert with a touch of style. Jenny Tschiesche,

You should be left with approx 500g of pear

8. Mix the pear with the walnuts and fructose 9. Fructose can be adjusted to suit personal tastes and will depend slightly on the quality and ripeness of the pears

www.AlongTheThames.co.uk

2. Place into ramekins

5. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and spread the crumble mix evenly on the top

6. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. The Pear should be tender at this point but should still retain a lightly firm bite, the water should have evaporated 7.

Warm the pear mix in a suitable size pan

Prepare, Plan and Profit As autumn is now upon us with misty mornings, leaves falling and night’s drawing shorter; what can we do in business to ensure grey days don’t interfere with our grey cells?!

it’s sorted it is almost Easter and an entire trading period can be lost! The net result can and often translates into radical changes, cost cutting and loss of business. So, what’s the ‘marketing mechanics’ to guide us through this process? A lot of this is simplistic planning and let me provide you with an example.

As a marketer, this is the time of year when where the kids are back at school, summer holidays are over and we try to focus on our work; we ‘liven up’ our clients with preparation and planning for 2011.

One of our clients is LJA Learning & Development based in Staines. We actually maintain a yearly plan with quarterly reviews; but as we get into October the focus is always on the last calendar quarter and New Year, with a solid plan to the end of March and a ‘skeleton’ plan for the coming year.

Of course we must focus on our everyday work and running of businesses, but proactive preparation and planning now, can steer and maintain a department, small business and organisation into a healthy and, hopefully, more profitable status for the coming year. October and November can be ‘prime’ months to ensure December is finalised in terms of any special events or offers for the Christmas season; and the first calendar quarter of 2011 is prepared and planned for. Apart from ‘High Street’ names we are all familiar with, I know far too many business owners, departments and organisations that come back from the Christmas and New Year break, and have not thought through how they are engaging with their current customers and how to obtain new ones! By the time

Firstly, we ensure we are maintaining and maximising our everyday marketing and sales activities e.g. ensuring existing customers receive service excellence, producing the bi-monthly newsletter, social media messaging and ongoing lead generation and PR. With this in hand, we can work through planning.

‘Informed knowledge’ helps to ensure your preparation and planning is adding value to your existing customerbase and creates the model to encourage new ones!

At the beginning of October, Christmas is sorted! Customer events, Christmas cards, any gifts are finalised and the Christmas and New Year newsletter is planned and just needs to come together.

The ‘name of the game’ is to ensure that as we return to our desks in the first week of January 2011, we actually and confidently know what the plan is and it’s just a matter of delivering, following up and ensuring profitable grow.

We review the year-to-date

Some final and vital points: 1. Make sure you track and record activity. If it works well, stick to it and ‘enhance’ your preparation and planning for each year. 2. Don’t run before you can walk. Be sensible in planning and ensure you can deliver and followup on each marketing and sales activity. 3. Do plan for ‘time out’! Everyone needs or should have a break, particularly at Christmas and New Year and over the summer; and we’re

www.AlongTheThames.co.uk

performance with retained customers, new customer activity, corporate messaging and quarterly themes to understand what has worked and what hasn’t. For example, during 2010, LJA set up a Twitter account to populate with thoughts, ideas, news and comments; and measure and monitor activity. Twitter can almost be your ‘online research and customer survey tool’ as well as your virtual word-of-mouth!

human, so we become ill from time-to-time. Factor this into the planning for the end of the year and the coming year, and you’ll be amazed how this becomes manageable! 4. Talk to your customers – find out what they like and what they don’t like, and what they would like to see and receive from you in the coming year. 5. Congratulate yourself on your efforts! Good preparation and planning does reap rewards, and you’re entitled to enjoy the moment

Young Musicians Take To Stage For Charity’s 21st Anniversary Concert Friday 29th October 2010,

Talented young musicians from Berkshire Maestros will be performing in a fundraising concert at Taplow Court near Maidenhead The event will celebrate the 21st anniversary of local charity People to Places (www.people2places.org.uk). Based in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, People to Places provides specialist accessible transport for people of all ages with disabilities and mobility problems.

The concert will feature a performance by over 100 young musicians from Berkshire Maestros’ (www.berkshiremaestros.org.uk) County Youth Orchestra and the Dawsons Berkshire Youth Brass Band and will be a joint fundraising effort for both organisations. Events like this provide a perfect opportunity to showcase some of the most advanced instrumentalists that Berkshire has to offer. In order to obtain a place in one of Maestros’ County Groups, young musicians need to have reached a very high standard of playing. A number of the young people taking part in this concert also play in various National Youth Orchestras of Great Britain. Peter Haley, General Manager of People to Places says: “People to Places is 21 years old and the concert is a celebration to match this achievement! We’re very pleased to be working together with Berkshire Maestros on what will prove to be a fantastic evening in the beautifully historic setting of Taplow Court. Our longevity has only been possible by all our many friends over the years and in this tradition, the evening is a perfect opportunity for the community to enjoy a wonderful evening of entertainment whilst contributing to these two great local charities.” Without doubt, this is a night not to be missed! Tickets for this concert are available from Berkshire Maestros priced £10 for adults and £5 concessions. A great value family ticket (2+2) is also available priced at £25. The Horse Trust appeals for donations to cover £23,500 hay shortfall Buckinghamshire charity The Horse Trust is facing an additional bill of £23,575 for hay and haylage this year due to a shortfall in production and the rising cost of hay. Last year, The Horse Trust was able to produce the majority of hay and haylage it needed for the winter from its 200 acres of paddocks. But due to the dry weather conditions this year, it has only been able to produce around a third as much hay and haylage. As all farmers are in a similar situation, the cost of hay and haylage has risen dramatically. If the winter is as severe as last year, the charity estimates it will need to buy around 600 bales of hay and haylage to feed the horses at its sanctuary in Speen, Buckinghamshire over the winter. "This is a very worrying situation - we have never faced such a large shortfall," said Shirley Abbott, Yard Manager at The Horse Trust. "We have already had to tighten our belts due to the credit crunch, but are now facing a massive bill for hay over the winter. We hope the public will be able to help us by donating money or hay to help us feed the horses, ponies and donkeys at the sanctuary." To donate to the hay appeal, visit www.justgiving.com/ hayappeal or send a cheque to The Horse Trust. Donations of hay or money can also be made in person at the sanctuary. The Home of Rest for Horses is open every day of the week between 2 and 4pm.

Kenton Secured! On Friday 20 August 2010, the long term future of the Kenton theatre was secured when the Board of Trustees purchased the freehold of the Kenton Theatre through funds raised locally and an interest free loan from a local company.. The fourth oldest working theatre in the country, housed in a Grade II listed building and staffed almost entirely by volunteers is still accepting donations towards the KENTON for KEEPS Campaign in order to repay the loan. Kenton Theatre Chairman, Alan Pontin said “The Kenton is one of the town's most cherished cultural assets which will be available for our future generations to act, sing, support and enjoy for decades to come. As Trustees we are merely custodians and we have done our best to make sure we pass The Theatre on to future generations. My board of trustees and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their outstanding support and the Municipal Charities for their professional and supportive resolution." Wendy Bowsher, Managing Director of The Kenton comments, "I am very proud to have played my part in securing the future of The Kenton Theatre. It has been a tall order to raise £350,000 in just six months especially during tough economic times but as a community we did it. I thank the Kenton Team and our many volunteers for their hard work and dedication in running the Kenton and assisting in achieving the freehold purchase.” As previous lease holders the Kenton Theatre have been restricted in improving The Theatre facilities and services, due to the constraints of not owning the freehold. “It will now be possible to start reviewing the services and facilities we offer to meet the needs of our patrons and users” said Alan Pontin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The largest programme of events is being offered through Autumn/Winter season in the entire history of the Theatre. Wendy Bowsher, Managing Director of the Kenton Theatre said “We have balanced the programme with series of Lectures, plays, musicals, comedians, new works, a programme for children, music and shows supporting charities.” She went on to say “During the Kenton for Keeps campaign the Trustees said it was the wish to secure the Kenton Theatre for all generations to come. What better way than to open the season with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra who have, for over forty years, been giving young people the opportunity to play and perform, going on to become leading jazz musicians. Here’s to a great season and the future success of the Kenton Theatre, we look forward to seeing you at the Kenton very soon.”
