FLOOD WARNING DOWNGRADED APRIL 29 Continued from page 1

Valley Conservation Authority reported April 29, Mississippi Lake/River water levels have begun to recede and the flood warning has been downgraded to a flood watch. Hayden has lived on Arklan Road for five years. "I am a widow," she told the Canadian Gazette. "I am by myself." Thursday morning, watching as the river encroached on her home, Hayden made the decision to call the municipal office in Beckwith, hoping to get some help. Significant rainfall was forecast for the next day, which would make a bad situation become worse. "I have never seen the water this high ... not even close," she said. "It came up so fast ... it was a shock." Fighting emotion, Hayden noted, "I was told by the municipal office I would need to load up sandbags ... go help yourself." "I cannot shovel sand," she

added. "I have osteoporosis ... I could not do it." By 2:30 p.m. on April 25, Hayden drove to the public works yard in Beckwith (1644 9th Line). A neighbour told her there were volunteers there filling sandbags. "I went and asked for help," she said, and "this is what I got," referencing the many bodies placing sandbags around her home's perimeter. Gwen Staltari lives in Perth. She and her daughter, Briana Staltari, were at the public works garage filling sandbags when Hayden showed up. "I saw the look on her face," Gwen told this newspaper. "She desperately needed help." "OK, let's go," she told Hayden. "We need to stick together." Reaching out to people by way of Facebook, hoping to secure some additional help, Briana "had people coming out of the woodwork," Hayden said. Carleton Place Coun. Toby Randell and his friend, Dwayne Sawyer, spent Thursday deliver-

"Elizabeth happened to be at the public works garage when we were loading up," Randell said. "She told us her home had water up to the door." "We came out here," he continued. "Working as a group, we helped a neighbour." Carleton Place Coun. Linda Seccaspina congratulated the camaraderie. "The municipalities need to

work together and come up with a plan," she said. "Out boundaries are blurred, and just because someone is five inches over the line is no reason not to rally together and help everyone ... we are a neighbourhood not three tiny kingdoms." When asked about the help she received, Hayden had no words. "I can hardly talk," she said. "I am crying ... I cannot believe the generosity, and this is hard labour." Hayden's neighbour brought over sandwiches, chips and water to feed the volunteers helping out. "I am just so grateful, not only to the people of Beckwith but other communities ... I appreciate this so much," she stressed. For many in Beckwith, Mississippi Mills and Carleton Place, keeping the water out has been a full-time job since Good Friday. A dozen structures on Birch Point Lane, near the Mississippi Lake RV Resort, are surrounded by water, with owners and community members stacking bags of sand to avert further flooding. Lake Park Road is also a hard-hit area, affecting many homes and cottages.

In addition to the local public works yard, sandbags are available at other Beckwith locations: McCann Road, Squaw Point Road, Loon Lane, Petrie Road, Lake Park Road (at the stop sign past the former Lake Park Lodge) and Patty Lane. "We hope the flooding has peaked," Beckwith Reeve Richard Kidd said. "I would like to thank all the volunteers, groups and businesses that have really pulled together as a community." People affected by flooding can call the Canadian Red Cross at 1800-863-6582, Monday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The organization announced it is supporting relief operations in the Ottawa area, providing a variety of services on a case-by-case assessment basis of immediate needs.

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

Areas of Mississippi Mills, Carleton Place and Beckwith are experiencing extraordinary flooding, owing to heavy rain and the usual spring melt. The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority issued a flood warning for the entire Mississippi River watershed on April 19 which remains in effect through April 29.

MISSISSIPPI MILLS JOINS WITH COUNTY ON POLLINATOR PILOT PROJECT ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com Mississippi Mills is following Lanark County's lead and joining in on a pollinator plant pilot project with help from a Pakenham farmer. According to director of roads and public works, Guy Bourgon, the county approached public works staff to gauge interest in using a seed mix of pollinatorfriendly plants, which they are purchasing through the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Twenty-two native species are included in the mix. Local farmer Scott Sigurdson, who owns and operates Indian Creek Orchard Gardens is participating in the municipality's adopt-a-road program by maintaining at two-kilometre portion of Sugar Bush Road. He's interested in using the seed mix on a one-kilometre test strip. "Scott adopted a road, but wanted to do a bit more," Bourgon remarked. " ... Council was pleased to see Mississippi Mills taking an interest in the project. "I really appreciate that the director has brought this forward," noted Mayor Christa Lowry. Coun. Jan Maydan agreed. "I'm glad that we are considering going with this. It sounds like it's working in Lanark Coun-

DAIRY DISTILLERY VODKA TO HIT LCBO SHELVES THIS MONTH DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Vodka made by the Dairy Distillery will be hitting 25 LCBO store shelves starting in May. The vodka will be available at LCBO stores in Ottawa, Toronto, and London, according to the distillery's director of operations, Neal McCarten, as he prepared for a visiting delegation who were taking part in the Lanark Federation of Agriculture's 2019 farm tour on Wednesday, April 24. tose. The distillery, which opened on Nov. 1, produces about 700 bottles a week, and is available for purchase not only online but also at their facility at 34 Industrial Dr. in Almonte. Helping fill this new demand will be the arrival, in June, of a new still from Germany, which will help them increase production to 3,500 bottles per week. This new equipment was purchased in part because of a $70,000 grant from the Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corporation, headquartered in Smiths Falls.

What makes the vodka made at the Dairy Distillery different? "We're making vodka from milk," explained McCarten. "We take the sugar that's left over," from making dairy products like butter and ice cream, "we take that lactose and we have a yeast that eats it up, and turns it into alcohol and then we distil it," through their Germanmade copper still. "And at the end, we get a nice, clear vodka." The University of Ottawa developed a special yeast for the distillery, which likes to eat the lac-

"Most yeast won't touch lactose, but our yeast absolutely loves it," explained Omid McDonald, the distillery's chief executive officer, as he led the tour around the facility. "Every Friday we get a shipment from Winchester," which is home to "Canada's largest dairy plant," run by Parmalat, where they produce, "1.2 million litres of milk a day," said McDonald. One of the byproducts of that process is that there are 200,000 litres of the milk permeate "which right now is just being dumped into the lagoons," said McDonald. "They can't just put that into the rivers. It's bad for the environment, so they

have to treat it, which costs them a lot of money, which in turn costs the farmers money." "We are using a product that gets wasted, that gets thrown away," added McCarten.

FUTURE PLANS "Long term, we want to make gins," and they have already ordered "old bourbon barrels from West Virginia," in order to make "vodka, extra old." MCarten would also like to see an Irish cream made on-site too. "That'll keep us busy!" During the Christmas season, "we were selling all we could make," literally slapping a label on a bottle that had just finished its weeklong fermentation process, before walking it up to the front counter where it was sold right away. The vodka has met with "a really great response," said McCarten. For more on the Dairy Distillery, visit www.dairydistillery.com.

HELP KICK OFF 200 LABYRINTH WALKS MAY 4 ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com Join us on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. as we officially open the Carleton Place Community labyrinth for the season. We will "Walk as One at 1 p.m." in celebration of World Labyrinth Day. And to help celebrate and

honour Carleton Place's 200th anniversary - we will be launching "200 Labyrinth Walks for CP200." Whenever someone walks the Carleton Place Community Labyrinth from May 4 to Sept. 13, they will be encouraged to record their participation.

We are hoping to meet our goal of 200 labyrinth walks by Friday, Sept. 13 and will celebrate our achievement during our annual Light up the Labyrinth event. World Labyrinth Day, declared in 1998 by The Labyrinth Society, brings people together globally to recognize the labyrinth

as a symbol and tool for healing and peace. This will be the 11th annual World Labyrinth Day, as we join individuals or groups around the globe who will walk their local labyrinths at 1 p.m. in their local time zones. This worldwide event included walks in more than 35 countries last

year, and it is estimated that more than 5,000 people participated. The Community Labyrinth is located at the corner of George and Baines streets, beside the Carleton Place & Beckwith Her-

RED CROSS OFFERS HELP FOR FLOOD VICTIMS Recent heavy rains across the province have swollen lakes and rivers in several watersheds and resulted in water ponding and flooding on many properties. Flooded areas are causing citizens to sandbag against rising waters on some properties across Lanark Leeds Grenville. Lanark, Carleton Place, Beckwith and Drummond/ North Elmsley residents in particular, have been dealing with the effects of rising waters over the past week or so, and efforts to sandbag properties has been ongoing. If you are experiencing floods to your properties, please keep in mind some safety precautions for drinking water. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit offers some advice. Flood water and water ponding around wells and septic systems can have adverse effects on the safety of your drinking water and how your septic system works. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark Health Unit is advising those whose wells are directly affected by these conditions to boil their water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking the water. Have your well water tested for bacteria. If your septic system has been affected, limit water usage by taking quick showers rather than baths, avoid using the dishwasher, garbage disposal and washing machine and flush your toilets only when necessary. Ensure your basement sump pump is not going into the septic system. Do not pump out your septic tank when the soil around the tank or the leaching bed is still saturated with water. High ground water levels may cause an empty septic tank to float and break out of the ground, and damage the tank and connecting plumbing. Helpful tips: • Keep your family safe by keeping family members and pets away from and out of the flood water; • DO NOT enter areas where electrical systems have been affected by flood water as you may be electrocuted; • Building materials, clothing and furniture exposed to flood waters are likely contaminated with sewage and can support the growth of mould. • Ask for professional advice during clean up. The Red Cross is supporting relief operations in the Ottawa area and has launched an appeal for people impacted by the flooding. At the request of several municipalities, the Red Cross is providing a variety of services for affected households, on a case-by-base assessment basis of immediate needs. If you have been affected by flooding in Ontario, please call the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582, Monday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST.

The tour ended up back at the school's Learning Commons, with a slide show, refreshments, and furniture on display from the former G.L. Comba Public School, which housed students before R. Tait McKenzie was constructed. It was named in honour of one of Almonte's most famous native sons, renowned sculptor, athlete and physician, Robert Tait McKenzie and officially opened its doors on Jan. 7, 1999. The McKenzie tartan adorns halls and classrooms of the school as well. A permanent fixture, possibly the planting of a tree at the end of the school year, will be another way to mark the anniversary, Greene said.

Though the official date of its 20th anniversary was back on Jan. 7, R. Tait McKenzie Public School students marked the milestone in their own way April 25. The school, which currently has a population of 300 from junior kindergarten to grade 6, held an open house and arranged tours through the years, given by students. According to principal Kali Greene, each class had a hand in recognizing the years from 1999-2019. "We wanted to do this celebration of each year, so each student could be involved," she commented. Greene said on the official anniversary date, the school held a 'Party Like it's 1999' event, with cup-

cakes for all staff and students and a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' in the school's gym. "We're fortunate to still have staff here, who were here in 1999," she noted. The tour wound its way through the halls, focusing on trends, popular songs and political figures from each year. Each class was responsible for compiling information on a year. HOWIE ROAD DEPOT TO CLOSE ANNUALLY NOV. 1 TO APRIL 30 ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com Due to declining usage and rising costs, Mississippi Mills council has elected to shorten the seasonal operations of the Howie Road depot. The matter was discussed during the April 16 committee of the whole meeting, where environmental compliance co-ordinator, Trish Petrie, presented a report to council. Petrie indicated the depot, east of Almonte at 1470 Howie Road, has operated as a brush and re-

cycling transfer station since April 30, 2014. Currently, the depot is open from April 1 to Oct. 31 on Wednesdays (3 to 7 p.m.), but year-round on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. She proposed a closure from Nov. 15 to March 31 annually, beginning this fall. The reason for this is due to low usage in the winter months over the last three years. Seventeen customers visited the site from December to January 2016; 46 in 2017 and 27 during the same period in 2018.

With the depot being open each Saturday of the year, Petrie said the operating costs have grown steadily; from $6,568.55 in December to March 2017, to $7,953.09 from December to March 2018. "Based on the data, staff is anticipating that this closure would achieve an estimated cost savings of $6,500 annually," she stated. However, Coun. John Dalgity suggested it be cut back even more and only open from May 1 to Oct. 31 and close Nov. 1 to April 30.

"It becomes a question of what service you want to provide to the community," said roads and public works director Guy Bourgon. Coun. Jan Maydan pointed out that areas are still dealing with snow removal in April, "so I'm OK with the April part." Upon being questioned on the Pakenham depot's usage by Coun. Bev Holmes, Bourgon said it sees more activity in the summer. Located at 580 Barr Side Road, it's open annually on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

CARLETON PLACE OBSERVES NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com

Almost 1,000 Canadian workers die on the job every year. The National Day of Mourning, held April 28 annually, acknowledges those who have been killed, injured or suffered an illness as a result of their work. In Carleton Place on Sunday, the flag at the town hall was lowered to half-mast. Coun. Toby Randell, by way of his Facebook page, noted: "I and the rest of council felt this was an appropriate way to recognize those who were injured or have lost their lives while working." "Remember those we have lost or whose lives have been forever changed because of some-

thing that happened while they were working ... then fight for better and safer workplaces for all of us," Coun. Jeff Atkinson stated on social media. "That is what April 28 is all about," he added. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement on the National Day of Mourning. "Every Canadian Deserves to be able to provide for their family, knowing they will return home safely at the end of a hard day's work," he said. Plans are currently underway in Carleton Place to honour former public works employee Keith 'Fletch' Lesway who died from a work-related injury. Testing a water main in June 2005, he was struck in the head by a flying pressure gauge.

In June 2007, after just over two years in a coma, Lesway died in hospital. A presentation by former deputy mayor Jerry Flynn and Colin Hynes, Lesway's co-worker and friend, took place during the previous term of council - on Nov. 27, 2018. At the time, Flynn stressed Hynes "has wanted a memorial for 'Fletch' from day one, and he has an idea ... we just need to make it happen." Lesway had an eye for one particular fire hydrant, and after it was replaced, public works staff stored it away. In February this year, during a committee of the whole meeting, public works director Dave Young noted, "It will be part of the memorial." John Bowes of Kinkaid & Loney Monuments Ltd. in Smiths Falls has of-

fered to refurbish the fire hydrant, which includes lettering and etching of a photograph, as well as its delivery and installation. The current council authorized $2,500 for the memorial, which will be paid from the group's promotions budget. The memorial and base is expected to cost $1,500. The additional funds would be for the supply and planting of a commemorative tree, as well as the promotion of an official unveiling (to be determined). A location for the memorial has not been announced; however, somewhere in Riverside Park (in the vicinity of the water treatment plant) was suggested. The communities of Perth and Smiths Falls held National Day of Mourning ceremonies on Sunday.

Tara Gesner/Metroland On April 28, the National Day of Mourning, Carleton Place council and staff recognize those who have been killed, injured or suffered an illness as a result of their work. The flag at the town hall has been lowered to half-mast.

WATER MAIN FLUSHING ALMONTE WARD May 6 – June 14, 2019 The Corporation of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will be flushing the water mains in all areas of Almonte Ward beginning Monday, May 6, 2019 to Friday, June 14, 2019, during the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (excluding weekends). This annual maintenance program is designed to remove the sediment that has accumulated in the water mains to maintain good water quality in the distribution system. This maintenance procedure is required under the Provincial Legislation and may result in temporary inconveniences to you such as reduced water pressure or red (discoloured) water. • Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being flushed. The pressure will return to normal once the flushing is completed. • If you detect discoloured (red) water, turn off your tap for 20 to 30 minutes; this should allow work crews enough time to complete the flushing. When work crews have left the area, turn on one COLD water tap for a few minutes to flush the system. • Discoloured water may occur in close proximity to the watermain flushing or many blocks, even kilometre’s away, depending on various factors such as their supply main size, location and demand flows. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the location and extent of the customers that may receive discoloured water. • Residents who live in the areas being flushed may want to collect containers of water for drinking and cooking, each day before the flushing program starts. • We recommend that you do not drink or wash laundry with red water. We appreciate your patience while this work is being completed. If you would like more information, please call the Roads & Public Works Department at 613-256-2064 and speak to Rod Cameron ext. 232 or Cindy Hartwick ext. 258.

TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com The future looks bright for Jordan McIntosh. The country and pop singer-songwriter from Carleton Place connected with the Canadian Gazette a short time ago, giving an update on what he has been up to. "I have been busy working on a few very exciting projects that I cannot quite share with everyone just yet," McIntosh teased. "However, what I can say is that I am more myself within my work than I have ever been before." The singer did let it slip he recently teamed up with 98 Degrees member Jeff Timmons. Crooning since Grade 4, McIntosh turns 24 this December - a Sagittarius. He currently splits his time between Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Nash-

ville. "I am working as hard as I can to get to the place in my career that I want to be," he expressed. "It is all very scary." What motivates the singer? "Proving to myself that I am destined for greatness, making my dreams a reality," McIntosh said. "And my family." The clan includes parents Greg and Julie, older sister Melissa, brother-inlaw Kane and niece Leia Lynn. What scares McIntosh? "Failure," he said, and "letting down the people who mean the most to me. In the previous seven years, McIntosh has released a number of hit singles: Walk Away (2012); Let Me Love You (2013); Grew Up in a Country Song (2013); That Girl (2014); Story of My Life, featuring George Canyon (2014); All

About the Girl (2015); Steal Your Heart (2016); and Sunroof (2016). He shared songwriting credit on Grew Up in a Country Song, That Girl and Steal Your Heart. "The process of writing lyrics is very personal ... you put yourself out there to be judged," McIntosh previously said. The music video for Grew Up in a Country Song was filmed in Carleton Place and area. At the time, McIntosh told this newspaper: "I will never forget where I came from, and no matter where my career takes me, I will always return." When back in Carleton Place, McIntosh is often at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, performing the national anthem in front of thousands of Ottawa Senators fans. See MCINTOSH, page 16

Ashley Kulp/Metroland Insp. Derek Needham, Lanark County OPP detachment commander, appeared before the county's community services committee April 10 to seek $20,000 in emergency funding for the Lanark County Situation Table. To the right is Lanark County Situation Table co-ordinator Stephanie Gray. benefit that our municipalities get," he stated. By the end of 2018, there had been 196 discussions at the LCST, Gray noted, "and of those, 85 per cent met the acutely elevated risk and had that overall risk lowered." She said it's reduced OPP calls for service and return visits to the hospital but that collaboration with 24 agencies and partners has been the key to its success. "We're a role model," she remarked. "Lanark County is very well-known across the province for the work that we've been doing as a rural community." An initiative LCST took on was the creation of a Community Plan for Safety and Well-being for Lanark County. Gray called it "a logical spinoff of the Situation Table." They began working on it before it was mandated by the province and since its creation, six of the nine Lanark County municipalities have adopted the document. "And that is actually a really big point of pride for our community; the fact that everyone came together before the province told us to, as a community, as agencies ..." she said.

Lanark County councillors were supportive of the funding request. Coun. Bill Dobson (Montague Reeve) noted Gray and Needham have been the most "passionate and hardworking people to develop this." "What's sometimes forgotten about is the amount of money we spend is pretty minimal when you think about the money we save the justice system, the health care system, in the future," he noted. "Consistency is the most important thing right now so you can go forward feeling confident that this is going to move forward." "I think the merits of this, with 196 diversions, it's changing lives, it's saving money ... it's a small price to pay," added Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow. Warden Richard Kidd (Beckwith Reeve), said the Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus is fighting the government on the community safety plan. "They see it as red tape and duplication, but no one can argue about the Situation Table," he stated. Chief administrative officer Kurt Greaves indicated the funds will come from the county's reserves.

The runway for the Lanark County Situation Table has been extended until at least December after county council approved $20,000 in emergency funding for the initiative. Lanark County council approved the funding for June to December 2019 at its April 24 meeting, but the matter was discussed at length during the April 10 community services committee meeting. Lanark County Situation Table (LCST) co-ordinator, Stephanie Gray and OPP detachment commander Insp. Derek Needham, brought the issue before council. LCST, which has been in operation since December 2015, is a risk-intervention model that brings agencies together to better serve those in need. Since its inception, Needham acknowledged the program has been covered by a $240,000 provincial grant, but no funding streams have been announced yet for this year. "The current grant we're operating under expired a couple of weeks ago ... we do remain very optimistic that there is going to be another grant this year to run it, but we're looking for a safety net in the event it doesn't," he explained. Bridge funding set aside from local municipalities a few years ago will take LCST until the end of May. Needham noted it costs approximately $41,000 a year to run the program, which is made up of wages, supplies for meetings and preparation of an annual report. "Lanark County graciously lends us this room every second Wednesday so we don't have rental costs, but in terms of running a program of this impact, $41,000 is fairly low for the

Big Star Recordings, an independent label run by Invictus Entertainment Group and distributed by Universal Music Canada, released McIntosh's first album, Steal Your Heart. It can be downloaded from iTunes. For those who have

known McIntosh for years, his success should not come as much of a surprise. He won his first talent show in 2005 at age nine and from there went on to earn titles and top placements in more than a few area singing competitions, leading the way to his Kiwanis Idol win in 2011.

In 2013, the singer was featured on George Canyon's Christmas song, Home for Christmas, which also included Aaron Pritchett and One More Girl. The Country Music Association of Ontario named McIntosh its 2014 Rising Star, and that same year he was a special guest

newspaper, if he could sing a duet with a current coach of The Voice, who would it be, McIntosh responded: "Kelly Clarkson. And it will happen one day." OPINION

FAMILY 'ATE LIKE KINGS' AND DIDN'T KNOW IT AUNT LILY MAY WELL HAVE BEEN RIGHT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Aunt Lily said we ate like kings. Uncle Dick, Aunt Lily and my young cousin Richard had come from Ottawa for a visit. It was early spring - a Saturday. Aunt Lily would never come to the farm on Sunday and miss mass in Ottawa, so we were eating dinner so that they could get on their way back home before dark. She looked over the table again, and once more shook her head. "Kings. Just like kings," she said, sitting down in front of a steaming bowl of creamed potatoes, a platter of thick fried pork

chops, turnips, sauerkraut, sweet pickles, and a pile of homemade bread. Over on the bake table, a baked bread pudding waited to be served later with freshly whipped cream. This was all ordinary food to me ... everyday mealtime, and I couldn't imagine where Aunt Lily got the idea we were eating like kings! Wasn't this the Depression? Weren't we supposed to be poor? I decided then and there I would take a special heed of what we ate for the next day or so. Maybe we weren't so poor after all. I couldn't help noticing too that when the Schumans got in the car to head back to Ottawa, the back seat was full. There were two freshly plucked chickens,

a bag of potatoes, two cabbages from the cellar, and a jar of sauerkraut. It was food I was pretty sure they didn't need. After all, didn't they live in the city? So, if we ate like kings, why didn't we have money? It just didn't add up to me. I took special note of our meals for the next day to see if there was any truth to what Aunt Lily said. Every last morsel of food from dinner that day had been eaten, so, as usual, there were no leftovers. Supper that night was made up of a big fry pan of sausages from the smoke house, potatoes, cabbage salad, the usual plate of bread and butter, and a glass bowl of raspberry preserves. Father polished off the last of the raspberry preserves, three slices of toast, a couple cups of green tea, and a fresh muffin Mother had already made for the next

day. Nothing special about any of that, I thought ... and certainly nothing there that would appeal to a king! Breakfast never varied. A bowl of porridge with cream and brown sugar and toast and jam. For Father though, his breakfast was fried potatoes, eggs, and a good strip of salt

pork, and of course cup after cup of green tea. While we ate, Mother packed our school lunches, and I knew there would be a sandwich of cold beef, buttered muffins freshly made the night before, and molasses cookies. As I thought about what we put in our stomachs, I figured maybe we didn't have money, but we never went to bed hungry. Just maybe Aunt Lily was right after all. Maybe we did eat

been proven in court. Homeowners Paul and Christy Salvador were in their living room when the crash happened. The couple's two children, Anthony and Logan, were upstairs. Paul told the Canadian Gazette, two cars were racing down Nelson Street. One vehicle, an orange Hyundai, did not make the corner, striking 239 Park Ave. "It sounded like an explosion ... Anthony and Logan quickly ran down the stairs," he said. If Paul's name sounds familiar, it should. He is a troop scouter for the Carleton Place Scouts. "I was watching TV with my wife when it happened," Paul recalled. "The front door was open ... I turned to look out when I heard the tires squealing around the corner." When the Hyundai hit the Salvador home, it destroyed a support pillar on the front porch, in addition to the porch's deck and a large flower box. "I jumped up and ran out the door, which I had to force open as the bricks were in the way from the destroyed pillar," Paul stated. He continued: "The driver was attempting to back the vehicle up ... I launched myself onto the hood and banged my right fist down on it, shouting at

him to stop." "With only three wheels and the front end missing, he put the Hyundai into gear and proceeded to drive away at maximum speed," Paul added. "Knowing he was not going to stop and I would be hurt, I rolled off the hood." Paul hurt his left hand. He cannot bend his thumb. "I am not exactly as young as I used to be," he told this newspaper. "However, I did not notice anything at the time because of the adrenaline going through me." As the Hyundai continued down Park Avenue toward the Neelin Street Community Centre (arena), Christy was on the phone with 911. The family's neighbour, Mike Williams, a captain with the local Ocean Wave Fire Company, gave Paul a ride to see where the driver went. "The intent was to give the police as much information as possible," he said. Ultimately, OPP arrested the driver of the Hyundai and the investigation is ongoing. The Salvador family is hoping to get its porch repaired sooner than later; however, spring is not the best time to find an available contractor. "The house appears to be secure, but I am going to need to support the damaged section until a perma-

nent repair is done," Paul said. "The far right pillar was also damaged by the impact, with the bricks and mortar completely loose." Members of the Salvador family would like to thank OPP for making a quick arrest, as well as Williams and other neighbours for providing them with support through the ordeal. Hits keep coming Paul followed up with the Canadian Gazette a few days after the incident. "It looks like I am going to get the short end of the stick on this one," he said. "It seems my insurance will only cover the replacement value." "This house is over 100 years old, and nothing is built to code," Paul added. "To do the repair ... following the building code, which will be an improvement ... I am going to have to pay for it myself." Furthermore, since only two pillars were broken, the insurance company will simply pay to replace them, "probably with modern bricks, not matching the existing brick," Paul worried. "If I want to make everything match, I am going to have to pay for it myself," he added. "Seems the drunk driver ran over more than my porch ... my wallet as well." He's expecting he'll have to open a line of credit with the bank to do the repairs.

BIRTH

PERSAUD, Dr. Bhisma Pitama

“Satnarine” It is with sadness the family announces the death, from an unexpected illness of Dr. B. P. Persaud (Sat), in Hospice Renfrew on Tuesday 23rd April. A proud graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. He practiced in Banbridge Northern Ireland, and Guyana before settling in Arnprior where for 50 years he cared for many generations of patients from first breath to last. For 17 years he was Director of Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew. Medicine was his life and priority. His ethics and kind commitment was inspirational to many. His relational with the nursing staff at the Arnprior Hospital was an excellent one. Especially the OR staff for when he cooked delicious food for special occasions, on days he was assisting. When away from his medicine he was found relaxing on the golf course working towards his eleventh hole in one. 10 holes in 1 was good but 11 would have been better. He was an avid reader and consummate artist. He enjoyed traveling to the Soviet Union and Scandinavia in the 70s, African Safaris, South American rain forest, as a member of Remote Area Medical Corp. to bring medicine to the indigenous people; Bali, Sepang and other parts of Asia. His family Danesh (Toronto), Devan and Mirko (Arnprior), Rohan and Etsuko, Ellie and George (Sydney Australia) Aran and Felicio, Sophie and Hannah (Seoul, South Korea) Thara and Graeme, Norah, Holly and Saoirse (Dublin Ireland). Must continue on their life’s journey without him. We would like to express our deep-felt gratitude to Dr. Neilson, the nurses and volunteers at the Hospice for the compassionate care they gave to our loved one during the last days of his life. Dr. Persaud’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation took place on Friday evening, April 26th from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday morning, April 27th from 9:45 to 10:45. A Tribute to Dr. Persaud followed in the Pilon Family Chapel at 11 a.m. For those who wish to honour his work and memory support for Families de la Esperance Puerta Vallarta. (Families at the dump) www.familiesatthedump.org or Renfrew Hospice for their exceptional mission would be appreciated - in lieu of flowers. insideottawavalley.com

Bron, Jason Paul

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden tragic passing of our much-loved Jason in Kingston, Ontario on Sunday, April 21st, 2019. Jason was born January 11th, 1974 and in his 45th year. Loving son of John Bron and Janice Bron, and stepson of Leo Hermer. Proud father of Carlie and Justin Bron. Special loved brother of Janna Bron. Jason will be sadly missed by his nephews Kobie Murphy and Lucas Maskell. Predeceased by his grandparents Jean and Carl Paul and Willem and Grietje Bron. He will be missed by cousins, friends, aunt and uncles. Jason’s loves and passions in his life were his children, friends and family times together, engines, especially transmissions, his pugs, especially Oscar and being on his boat ‘Footloose’. Friends were received at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W., Perth on Sunday, April 28th, 2019 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Funeral service was held in the Chapel on Monday, April 29th, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. followed by a reception in the Blair & Son Family Centre. “All we have now are pictures in a frame. His memory is a keepsake for which will always remain”. In remembrance of Jason, a trust fund for his children Carlie and Justin has been set up. “We will always have him in our hearts”.

Crawford In fond and loving memory of the best husband and father in the world Orval Crawford who passed away on May 3, 2003. He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast. He just kept right on working For those he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And if he had some worries They were unspoken too. He was there, a firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold onto In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad. One of our greatest blessings My husband and our dad. Loving wife Dolly and Four sons and their families

HAYES, Phil

(Retired Manager, The Beer Store) In the late evening of Thursday, April 18, 2019 in the ICU at the Queensway Carleton Hospital after a brief but sudden illness, Phil left this world with his devoted wife Gayle curled up beside him; his adoring daughter Paula’s cheek pressed up against his; his caring sonin-law Stephen Cherry and his loving grandson Chad, the light of his life, sitting at his bedside. The hockey match was playing in the background. The son of the late Frank Hayes & Eveline Daze and son-in-law of the late Jean Brandimore of Arnprior, Phil leaves behind his brother Brian (Gail), his loving sister Helen (late Lyle Ross) and Sandra Elliott along with his sisters and brothers-in-law Beryl and Bruce Campbell, Shirley and her husband (and Phil’s best friend) Johnnie Kelly, Heather Campbell (late Phil Brandimore). He will be missed by his many adoring nieces and nephews. Phil gave us everything that his body could give us in its final hours. He is finally free of the pain of the cluster headaches he endured for over 20 years and is breathing effortlessly. We know that his best pal “Honey” is curled up at his feet as he chats with those that have went before him. Thank you to Dr. Iyengar and the ICU Critical Care Team for their incredible medical expertise and compassion. Phil’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation was held on Sunday afternoon, April 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. and again on Monday, April 29 from 11 to 11:40 a.m. A Tribute to Phil took place in the Pilon Family Chapel at 12 o’clock. Luncheon followed. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make donations in Phil’s memory to the charities that were near and dear to his heart: the MS Society of Canada or The Canadian Guild Dogs for the Blind. TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com The Carleton Place Minor Hockey Association (CPMHA) year-end banquet took place on April 13, held in the upper hall of the Neelin Street Community Centre (arena). The event, which ran from 4 to 7 p.m., celebrated the organization's players and the accomplishments of its teams during the 2018-2019 season. President Steve Edgerton was the MC. While a couple hundred players and

others dined on pizza and cupcakes, awards in several categories in all divisions were handed out, with all winners receiving thunderous applause. The banquet's final two awards were Volunteer of the Year and Coach of the Year. In regards to the top volunteer, "I had many executive members, coaches, conveners and parents talk to me about this executive member," Edgerton said. "From last year's annual general meeting to today, this person has been there for the ride," he continued. Helping with tournaments and IP Fun Days, and securing sponsorships for the organization's team jerseys are just some of the highlights noted by the president. "Most of all, this person has been my sounding board when I had something I did not know how to deal with ... talking me off the ledge and helping me make smart decisions," Edgerton added. Tournament co-ordinator Ashley Johnston is the 2018-2019 season's Volunteer of the Year. Erik Baril earned the Coach of the Year award. "I watched a lot of our coaches this year, and the amount of work they do is incred-

DOWNTOWN ARENA MAY NOT BE ANSWER FOR SENS TEAM HAS PROBLEMS BUT THE ARENA ISN'T ONE OF THEM, WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE JEFF MAGUIRE Column

This has been a particularly difficult 12 months for the modern day Ottawa Senators. Try a difficult year and a half ! The National Hockey League team and in particular controversial owner Eugene Melnyk is facing a firestorm of fan discontent. They're trying to navigate their way through what amounts to a public relations disaster involving the trading of four star players and the apparent collapse of their much-touted downtown arena project. The recent list of disappointments involving the

team is a lengthy one. Little wonder people who were once Sens' diehards are now boycotting the team. I know some personally. The fallback position for Sens' organization is to stake their immediate future on the Canadian Tire Centre (CTC) arena in Kanata and their claim of an on-ice rebuild which GM Pierre Dorion insists will soon pay dividends. I don't know about the rebuild of course. Ahead of the NHL draft it is pretty hard to say how that shapes up? As for the downtown arena versus CTC, if you thought I was going to rail against the Kanata facility (Sens' home since January 1996) you are mistaken. I realize an arena on

downtown LeBreton Flats has significant support and I am sure that, initially at least, it would be a big success. New high tech arenas usually are. But what about the longterm? I'm among a growing number of Ottawa and area people, mostly Senators' fans, who are expressing concerns about whether a downtown arena would be viable over the long haul? I've heard all the arguments for the LeBreton project and I'm sure many are true. However I spoke to a lot of people before writing this article, Sens' season ticket holders, semi-regular attendees of NHL games in the city and more casual hockey fans. I also heard an interesting exchange recently between two wellknown Ottawa radio hosts. All beg to differ when it comes to moving the team downtown. They insist the

majority of Sens' regulars live in the west end of Ottawa particularly in Kanata and Stittsville. They also say many supporters regularly travel to games from communities west of Ottawa including Carleton Place, Perth, Smiths Falls, Arnprior and Renfrew to name a few. Considering Ottawa's public transit situation many people I have talked to expressed concern about a downtown hockey arena. They say they would rarely attend games downtown, simply because the transit options are inconvenient. They don't see that improving with the arrival of light rail. What the folks I've talked to would like to see is a better parking arrangement at CTC. Translated that means "cheaper" parking. Others would like the focus put on providing

quick and convenient city bus transport to and from the arena. Designated parking lots and mass bus transit, such as that now used by the CFL's Ottawa Redblacks for games at TD Place Stadium. That arrangement works well for fans who want to see a similar situation for Senators' games. True, the Sens have lots of problems and hopefully those will be ironed out over the course of time. I don't think the arena is one of them. CTC is still a firstrate facility and why couldn't a new arena be built near the current stadium?

The focus should be on getting fans to and from hockey games and other events at CTC more seamlessly. Make it convenient for people to use public transportation and reduce parking rates as much as possible. That way when the team improves, as it surely will over the course of time, ownership will be catering to a happier, more motivated fan base. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
