BEAR SIGHTINGS IN CARLETON PLACE, PERTH TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com Bear sightings are common this time of year. Near the end of July, a black bear was spotted roaming through the South Street area in Perth, near Algonquin College, and the day before Canada Day, wildlife officials removed a bear from a residential area in Carleton Place. "It is not unusual for bears to come within town limits from time to time," read a statement issued by Perth. "Most encounters are not aggressive and attacks are rare," the statement continued. "Generally, bears want to avoid humans." To discourage bears, residents are reminded to: store garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids; put garbage out only on the morning of pickup;

fill bird feeders, including seed, suet and nectar only during the winter when bears are hibernating; keep pet food indoors; and clean food residue and remove grease from outdoor barbecue grills after each use. On June 30 in Carleton Place, representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), Ontario Provincial Police and Ocean Wave Fire Company attended the area of Moffatt, Flora and McRostie streets for a bear in a tree. In a followup interview with the Canadian Gazette, Jamie Prentice, a regional outreach specialist with the MNRF, stated: "After the bear was immobilized and placed in the trailer, staff continued to monitor its condition," to ensure the bear was able to leave the See BEAR, page 6

ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com After just four months on the job, Mississippi Mills chief administrative officer Ken Becking has vacated the position. This newspaper learned last week that Becking is no longer filling the role, but when reached for a comment on Aug. 10, Mayor Shaun McLaughlin couldn't confirm the news. "I can't comment either way because it's an in camera issue," he stated. Council had an item on the agenda for an in camera discussion at its Aug. 14 meeting, an HR matter pertaining to "personal matters about an identifiable individual, including municipal or local board employees." Becking assumed his duties with the municipality on May 7 after council spent two months search-

He most recently held the post of director of public works and engineering/ city engineer with Owen

Sound from August 2014 to January 2018. According to a press release issued by Mississippi Mills when he was hired, Becking "brings a wide range of expertise to the position including public administration, municipal operations and program and project management." In a news release from the City of Owen Sound on Jan. 10, 2018, it indicated Becking was no longer working with the municipality. The release cited it was a personnel issue. Becking has worked in municipal administration and management for 30 years and also formerly held positions in Renfrew County as well as public works director for the City of Kawartha Lakes from 2005 to 2010. Becking's LinkedIn profile still lists his current role as CAO of Mississippi Mills.

ENERGY TIP! Change the direction of airflow on your ceiling fan. For those cold, winter months, the blades should operate in a clockwise direction, helping to push the warm air from the ceiling down into the room. In the summer, the blades should operate in a counter clockwise direction as a way of creating a nice, gentle wind.

enclosure on its own upon release. During this time, staff continued to apply water to the bear, keeping it as cool as possible. "Bears, like most mammals, pant to help dissipate heat," Prentice explained, and "when bears are under the influence of the drugs used to allow officials to handle them safely, their ability to pant is reduced, so typically water is used to help them through this period." Although the MNRF cannot disclose a specific release location, Prentice noted, "this bear was taken to an area away from people and residences." The MNRF classified the bear as a yearling, meaning it is roughly 18 months old and has likely already separated from its mother. "Its survival will not be affected by this incident," Prentice stated. What to do If an individual spots a bear, he or she should remain calm and not run, climb a tree or swim away. Instead, he or she should slowly back away while keeping the bear in his or her sight. If the bear does not leave, a person should make noise and

PAKENHAM FAIR BRINGS TASTE OF THE COUNTRY AUG. 18 ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com The more than 100-year-old tradition of the Pakenham Fair continues Saturday, Aug. 18, bringing a day of old-fashioned country fun. The fair, which takes place in and around the Stewart Community Centre, runs all day, with a local market, crafters, children's activities, as well as the traditional horse, beef, dairy and horticultural shows. There's something for the entire family at this year's fair, kicking off with a breakfast at the fairgrounds concession stand, from 7 to 9 a.m. The cost is $6 per person, and the MacMillan's Ladies Broomball team is once again spearheading the spread. This year also marks the return of the Man's Best Friend contest. Take your dog along to the fair and enter the contest, which features categories such as Dog with the Most Waggly Tail, Smallest Dog, and Best Dressed Dog. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and judging will take place at 10:15 a.m., by "The Dog Father," Dan Lafortune, who rehabilitates and boards dogs. Rayburn Evans joins in the fun for the official opening of the fair at noon, at the cattle show area on Fred Miller Field. Satisfy your hunger with the Chili Cookoff Contest. Anyone can enter a favourite chili, but it must be in the lobby of the com-

munity centre by 2 p.m. for judging. Mississippi Mills Fire Department Station 2 firefighters are also planning to operate a barbecue and refreshments, behind the canteen, at 11 a.m. The organizers of Puppets Up! will offer creative puppet-show entertainment for children in the special event tent at the fair. Show times are 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The children's activities tent will operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., including a petting farm, bouncy houses, frog jumping and more. Throughout the day, visitors can take in the Zion UCW Bake Sale at 9 a.m. in the community centre, viewing of fair exhibits and a Mississippi Mills Fire Department display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as the farmers' market outside the community centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Inside the community centre, a craft and trade show will be on offer from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a merchant sidewalk sale and community yard sale is set to take over main street, beginning at 9 a.m. The popular Pakenham Horse Show will set up shop at the baseball diamond beside the canteen at 9:30 a.m., with the 4-H Calf Show taking over Fred Miller Field at 10 a.m. Both dairy and beef classes will be featured. Admission for the fair is free for children and just $5 for adults. BROKEN PROMISES ALL TOO COMMON Don't make promises you can't keep. The classic song by Three Dog Night has a simple message, but unfortunately it's one that politicians all too often ignore. And when you mix in an electorate that demands unrealistic promises, you have a recipe for disappointment and cynicism. The buck-a-beer promise made by Conservative leader Doug Ford during the recent provincial election campaign comes to mind. As does the 10-cent reduction in gas price pledge. As well as the revoking of the sex-ed curriculum. And even the expediting of the Highway 17 four-laning in Renfrew County. Many beer-drinkers across the province have been excited at the prospect of buck-a-beer since it first became an election issue. But it won't be long before disillusionment sets in. The brewery industry has already realized there is much froth but little substance to the promise. If Ford's gang really wanted to give us a $1 beer, they'd drop taxes on pints, not expect brewers to either provide it at a loss or come up with a new cheap rotgut brand (or smaller cans). How is reducing the minimum companies can charge for beer from $1.25 to $1 going to give us buck-a-beer when the best we get now is a $1.60 beer? Given the rapid rise in the popularity of craft beers, it's not likely there will be much of a market (or stomach) for any beer that costs less than $1 to make. Same goes for cheaper gas. If the provincial government really wants to give us a 10-cent break on gas, drop the taxes. Despite Ford's promise, gas prices in Ontario are about 20 per cent higher this summer than they were last year under the tax-happy Liberals. Then there's the new government's promise to scrap the school curriculum for health and physical education (or sex-ed to those obsessed with the sex-related material part of it) and replace it with something more "age-appropriate." But there isn't enough time to properly consult with parents before the new school year begins. So it's unlikely we'll see a full repeal of the sex-ed part of the curriculum, which will infuriate a small but vocal group of Conservative supporters for whom the sex-ed issue is paramount. Another pre-election promise that threatens to be a letdown involves the next stretch of the four-laning of Highway 17. Now with our MPP appointed transportation minister, many local motorists and politicians appear to think the project is a slam-dunk for the next round of roadwork. Certainly with John Yakabuski as highways minister our chances are improved. At least we will be on Queen's Park's radar. However, let's not get carried away with expectations. It's hardly a matter of our homegrown minister snapping his fingers and it will be done. The new government is facing some serious challenges when it comes to bringing the province's finances under control. It's not going to be as easy as our premier seems to think to find all the savings he has promised. Then there are the political considerations. Yes, the new government has a strong rural base, but the keys to reelection are still the Toronto-area seats taken by the Tories from the Liberals on June 7. And those MPPs will be lobbying the transportation minister to fix much more serious traffic bottlenecks than we have in Renfrew County. But let's keep our fingers crossed the resumption soon of the four-laning up the Valley is one promise that will be kept and not become an impossible dream like buck-a-beer, a 10-cent-a-litre gas cut and a return for students to the 1990s.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY READER: TRUTH SHOULD BE TOLD TO CARLETON PLACE TAXPAYERS DEAR EDITOR: I was dismayed to see that Jerry Flynn pulled out of the town's mayoral race. I think he would have done a good job representing the Town of Carleton Place as mayor, however, I can appreciate he has personal reasons which we aren't, and shouldn't be privy to. Although I have not made a decision about who to vote for, I would like to be able to make an informed decision, one knowing the facts and truth, which brings me to the statement that was made by Jerry, and I

quote: "The other thing is the burden I carry knowing the whole Louis Antonakos story. If someone chooses to step up, the

If Jerry, or anybody else for that matter, within council, knows something that would be pertinent to the taxpayers of this town they need to step up to the plate and not wait for someone else to do it. My husband Gary and I have lived in Carleton Place for well over 35 years, it's a great town to bring up children, shop, work, feel safe and hopefully be confident in the people governing it. Unfortunately, lately, the latter is not the case. It's very sad that Carleton Place, on more than one occasion has been written about in the Ottawa Citizen, not in a good light, but a town whose Council is fraught with numerous problems. Please someone, step up to the plate, enlighten the taxpayers of Carleton Place as to what is going on, so we can make an informed decision with the upcoming election in October!

Sleep Lab Supports Local Communities We spend about one third of our life sleeping, and sleep is necessary to help repair and restore our bodies. That’s why it’s important to manage any sleep-related issues. The Sleep Lab at CPDMH helps to do that.

Patients are referred to the Sleep Lab by their family doctor and connect with a sleep specialist via telemedicine. For the actual study, patients arrive at CDPMH and are connected to a variety of sensors. They are then then left to sleep in a private room. No special preparation is required.

Last year, more than 900 patients had a sleep study done at CPDMH’s Sleep Lab. Now, a new service provider - MedSleep is ready to care for even more community members in the region.

A technician monitors their sleep patterns, brain waves, oxygen levels, heart rate, breathing and eye movements from a different room. Patients then return to CPDMH to discuss the results of the study once the results are ready.

Overnight sleep studies help to diagnose a wide range of sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy and night movement disorders.

Patients should speak to their family physician for a referral to the Sleep Lab.

If left untreated, these issues can result in higher risks of diabetes, heart disease, impotence, depression and arrhythmias. Sleep disorder patients may also have daytime sleepiness which increase motor vehicle accidents, work related accidents, poor job performance and decreased quality of life.

PADDLES AND PUPPETS JOIN FORCES

MISSISSIPPI MILLS

YARD OF THE WEEK

Jennifer Pfitzer and Fred Hallahan have a charming garden at 52 Union Street North in Almonte which was nominated by Carolyn Klickermann. Window boxes and hanging baskets with colourful red and white annuals surround the property. All the beds are neatly edged and mulched. Many perennials including purple and white coneflower, yellow coreopsis, purple Jackmani clematis and orange and yellow daylilies are interspersed in the beds. Morning glories drape the side of the house. Guests are welcomed to a small deck and gazebo with lime green tables and chairs. A rain barrel, which was much-needed this summer, is neatly displayed. Small bushes and trees in proportion with the property’s size complete the scene.

Join us for two days of woodland fun. Festival of the Wild Child is a fantastic opportunity for families to participate in a whole range of nature-inspired activities, activities that will encourage you and your children to fall in love with creative outdoor learning and play. This event is sponsored by Vamos Outdoors in Almonte. The festival is a two-day event at High Lonesome Nature Reserve in the Pakenham Hills on Aug. 25 and 26. Open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., this festival is organized by the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust and will provide a variety of spots along wooded trails and by ponds to learn, explore and engage with the natural world. Knowledgeable volunteers will be at each station to help open windows onto the many wonders of nature. At Tranquility Pond, don rubber boots, grab a net, and wade in to see what lurks beneath the surface. Experts will be on hand to help you learn about the creatures you find. Investigate the beaver dams, bugs and birds at Beaver Pond. At Spooky Marsh discover some of nature's secrets, enjoy a scavenger hunt and help write "The Mystery of Spooky Marsh." Experience forest fun in the Stonewall Arboretum and maybe sneak up on a turtle or two where Turtle Pond joins the arboretum. All day Sunday there is a "Discover Geology" station at one of the many rocky outcroppings at High Lonesome where you will learn all about the rocks and ancient life beneath your feet. Finally, return to the Creativity

Centre for games, crafts and skillbuilding activities inspired by your day's adventures. Be a wild child - it's in your nature! There are also various special events throughout the weekend. The ever-popular Soundscaping Station will offer participants a chance to hear nature's sounds amplified, including the surpris-

ingly active life in the bottom of the pond or the wind high up in the trees. Wilderness skills will be led by Chad Clifford on both Saturday and Sunday, with sessions on "How to walk ever so quietly in the woods." COUNTY LAUNCHES BR+E PROJECT FOR 2018-2019 Lanark County, in partnership with Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corp. (CFDC), is set to launch a business retention and expansion (BR+E) project that aims to build and strengthen local business. The project, delivered by Valley Heartland CFDC, will benefit from $28,450 in funding under the Community Innovation stream of the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario's Eastern Ontario Development Program. "Statistics from 2016 show that in Lanark County, 85 per cent of our employment comes from small businesses, so it's very important that we nurture and support our

business community, and what better way to do that than a BR+E project," says Lanark County Warden John Fenik (Perth Mayor). The initiative consists of recruiting and training volunteers to visit businesses and conduct confidential interviews/surveys with senior management or owners. These face-to-face meetings will be key to understanding the challenges and opportunities that businesses face daily. The goal is to build capacity for continued BR+E among the participants, and the information gathered through the process will inform strategic action planning and implementation. The information collected will also be vital for long-term econom-

ic development planning to support continued business retention and expansion and inform the development of community policies, programs and initiatives to support businesses, including those provided by Valley Heartland CFDC. "The BR+E project is in direct response to the recently completed Lanark County economic development strategic plan 2018-2020 that identified a countywide BR+E as a key priority action for implementation under the theme of supporting entrepreneurs and business owners," says Kurt Greaves, Lanark County chief administrative officer. "It's very exciting to see such swift implementation of one of the top priorities from the strategic plan, and the county is looking forward to working with Valley Heartland CFDC, and all eight of our local municipalities, and their business communities, on this BR+E project." The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will also play a significant role through the use of its BR+E Tool. The tool provides guidance and training on established interview framework for gathering business development data in Ontario. The ministry BR+E program was first introduced in 1998 and has since seen more than 230 communities participate, with more than 8,100 businesses interviewed across the province. The BR+E project includes the recent hiring of Teri Devine, a seasoned economic development professional, to co-ordinate the project over the next year. "We are very fortunate to have Teri on board," says Stacie Lloyd, regional economic development officer, Valley Heartland CFDC. "Having strong co-ordination with a project of this size is important to ensure great results, including learning about and responding to local business issues and opportunities, and setting priorities and goals for continued business retention and expansion in Lanark County," adds Tina Stevens, general manager, Valley Heartland CFDC. For more information about the Lanark County BR+E project, updates and timely information, please visit www.valleycfdc.com/ bre.

The Greater Madawaska Public Library in Calabogie held a grand opening on Aug. 11 to celebrate its new location. In May the library opened its doors at 12629 Lanark Road, inside St. Joseph's Separate School. Saturday's celebration between 1 and 4 p.m. included a talk by legendary writer and storyteller Mary Cook, a presentation by the Calabogie Lions Club, musical entertainment and cake and refreshments. A large group was on hand to hear Cook speak. She was introduced by her publisher, Tim Gordon, the president of Burnstown Publishing House. He called her an Ottawa Valley treasure. After 40 years and 1,800 books, Burnstown Publishing House is still going strong. "I am very honoured to be Mary's publisher," Gordon said, and "her latest book is doing extremely well." At the end of 2017 Cook launched her twelfth book - The Best Job in the World, a collection of her reflections. "Mary is now working on her next book," Gordon noted. "She says it is her last, but I do not believe her." It is rumoured to be the story of Cook's family moving off their farm in Renfrew and into Carleton Place. It is the story of her mother, Mable Haneman, who could not wait to leave the farm. Cook and husband Wally call Carleton Place home. From 1958 to 1995 the couple owned Cook's of Carleton Place Limited on Bridge Street, a two-storey department store. Recently, they listed their home, preparing to movie into Waterside Retirement Community. Owing to her 48-year career at CBC (Windsor, Toronto and Ottawa), Cook earned seven ACTRA awards for excellence in broadcast journalism. "Lloyd Robertson only won three," she joked on Saturday. "When I say I won seven ACTRA awards, the people who told me their stories ... they were the winners of the ACTRA awards," Cook continued. "All I did was put the microphone in front of them and put their stories on the radio." Her coverage area was from the Quebec border to Belleville to

Algonquin Park. "I was not interested in the politics of the area but the people," Cook said. Back in the mid 70s', Cook was approached by a pair of men who wanted to do a book of her many stories. However, she told them she was only interested in doing a cookbook. They returned three times. "Finally, we made a deal," Cook said. "Half recipes and half stories." Cook's inaugural book was published in 1976, going to 11 printings. It was titled A Collector's Stories & Recipes. The celebrated author believes everyone has a book in them. "When you make out your will you think about who is going to get the sterling silver, the boat or cottage; however, the best legacy you can leave is your own particular story," Cook stressed. "It can be the most simple story, but it is your story." Cook has received numerous citations throughout the years, including certificates from former Ontario premiers Bill Davis and Bob Rae, as well as former Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chrétien. The Town of Renfrew recognized her, and she has received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Cook noted she will continue

GET BIT BY THE SHOPPING BUG AT ACQUISTI LIFE ASHLEY KULP akulp@metroland.com A trendy and unique shopping experience awaits you at Carleton Place's newest clothing boutique, Acquisti Life. The brainchild of Carleton Place's Deborah Nicholson, the store officially opened its doors June 1 and offers a variety of clothing, accessories and footwear for women, men and teens, including a wide selection of denim. Acquisti Life, located in the former Bud's Taxi spot at 19 Bridge St., has been several years in the making. "I moved here in 1984, so this is home to me," she said. "Having lived in the community for a long time, I always felt there was a need in Carleton Place for everyday clothing. There are some great clothing stores here and I hope Acquisti Life complements them." One of the first things that grabs customers is Acquisti

Life's namesake, which Nicholson said she stumbled upon five years ago. "'Acquisti' is Italian for shopping and I'm part Italian so I decided it would be fun," she remarked. Nicholson, who is also a paramedic, has always pondered the idea of opening her own store. "I watched the downtown rise and fall over the years and I've always had the entrepreneurial drive ..." Nicholson explained. "In the last few years, that drive increased and watching the changes and improvements in the town, I reached the point where I could say it was time." She flipped between the idea of a home decor or clothing space, but opted for the latter. "I'm addicted to shopping. It's a passion and always has been. We deserve to have local clothing that teenagers, myself and my friends could come here, stay in the community and See TRENDY, page 23

MOTHER FOUGHT LOSING BATTLE WITH COMMON HOUSEFLIES ENTIRE FAMILY WORKED EACH SUMMER TO KEEP THEM OUT, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Mother had more than one way to fight the common housefly, which she hated with a passion. She was convinced before coming into the house, they had collected enough germs from the barns to send us all to our sick beds. So when they managed to get into the kitchen, they were short-lived, let me tell you! Her favourite procedure to kill them off was the spray can of Fly-Tox which she got from Scott's Hardware in Renfrew. When she

used this powerful spray method, the kitchen was closed up for the better part of the day, as Mother attached the invaders with such force, that for hours after, you could smell the strong Fly-Tox all the way to the ice house, and the fumes hung from the ceiling like gossamer clouds. Father said it was more deadly than the housefly, even those that came first from the barns. She absolutely refused to use those hanging sticky coils that attached to the ceiling, since, after letting Father talk her into them, a fly fell off and landed in the butter dish, which, of course, had to be thrown out - butter and all! Just about every farmhouse in Northcote used the hanging coils. Even those farm wives who were immaculately clean, which Mother could never understand. If we were invited to tea and cookies on a summer day to a house where

the coils were used, Mother never took her eyes off them, waiting for a fly to fall onto the kitchen table, which would immediately cause her to say we had to rush off to do some urgent chore at home. She even had Father make homemade swatters for we five kids. Square pieces of fine wire mesh were tacked to a thin strip of lath, and we each had our own, with orders to keep it close at hand, so that we could swat any fly that came within a foot of us. Of course, we were never allowed to kill a fly that was anywhere near the kitchen table! We had to shoo it away, and, hopefully, it would land on the back of a chair or a windowsill where its splattered body was well away from where we would be eating. Then we had to take wet rag and scour the spot afterwards. On hot days, it wasn't

unusual for us to have our noon meal out in the grape arbour, where a long table, covered with oilcloth was always at the ready. Of course, it was thoroughly scoured before we took our food out, and then two of us kids were given the job of standing each at an end of the table with a flour bag tea towel. We had to keep it swishing over the table to scare off any fly that was trying to join us at dinner. So the two swishers, given this job, couldn't eat until everyone else was finished. Father would just shake his head. Going in and out of the house was another challenge for each of us. We had to first stand at the screen door, and even if there wasn't a fly in sight, we had to rattle the door a few times before opening it, and swish our arms over our heads and around our bodies and scare off any fly waiting to get inside. Mother's ongoing battle

with the common housefly was never quite won. Father said her time and energy would be better spent fighting a war she could win. He said, as long as he lived on the farm (born there, he would remind her), nobody ever won the war over the summer invasion of the flies. That didn't stop Mother from trying. Little did she know that my sister Audrey and I would grow up and take with us, too, our hatred of the dreaded housefly. Never forgetting Mother's constant battle that went on in our kitchen out there in Ren-

frew County every summer so many years ago. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? shop," she said. Armed with the idea, Nicholson stumbled upon the perfect location along Bridge Street. She said building owner Dave Hick immediately believed her business would be a good fit. Nicholson and her partner set about making the space their own, gutting it, raising the ceilings and exposing the brick walls. She is very proud of the finishing product's modern, industrial feel. "We did everything custom in here and brought in industrial handmade fixtures," she said, noting she wanted it to look like a boutique. "I wanted people to walk into the store and say 'Now I love this space.'" Every piece of the store reflects a part of Nicholson's life, from the wooden shelves made by hear brother, down to the bicycle imagery that can be found around the space. "I'm passionate about rid-

ing, exercise and fitness so there's little touches of me and my family throughout the store." In describing Acquisti Life, Nicholson said she's "curated a closet." "You're going to find what people would have in their closet. There's athletic wear, everyday casual dresses, accessories, denim, flip flops and more," she stated. She did her research before she stocked the space. "I paid attention to what was already in the community and I wanted to fill gaps rather than competing with businesses." Nicholson sources as many Canadian products as possible, including those with a focus on ecofriendly fabrics. She is a stockist of the Good Luck Sock, quirky socks made famous on Dragon's Den, and one line shoppers won't find anywhere else in the area is Mona B bags, which are made from recycled canvas and tents. "I discovered them about five years ago in Prince Edward Island while travelling and I've never been able to find them anywhere else. You can't buy them online," she said. "When I opened the store I was adamant I wanted to bring them in and so far there's been a great response." She said the response in general to Acquisti Life has been very positive. "This is a new endeavour for me; a learning experience. This is what I wanted in our town. I wanted to be able to shop locally and pick up something for my teen

or partner without having to travel into the city." Acquisti Life currently has a Facebook and Instagram presence and Nicholson said a website, www.acquistilife.ca, is under construction. The store is open seven days a week, but hours will fluctuate depending on the season.

GARRY INTRODUCES HIS SONG - FROM THE GREAT BEYOND LYLE DILLABOUGH WRITES ABOUT MAKING A LATE COUSIN'S DREAM COME TRUE LYLE DILLABOUGH Column

Sometimes there is nothing else one can do but smile. This is a true story about that. It involves my late cousin, Arthur Garry VanDusen, a song he wrote and a prediction he once made. You see Garry (he was always known as Garry to me) was a big truck-driving, back hoe-operating, mechanical type of a guy who could fix anything. A couple of his mottos were: "If we can't find the part then we will just have to make it" or, "A car ain't a car unless there's a piece of barnyard wire hanging from it somewhere." Garry was also a songwriter. Who would have guessed it? This big, kind of loud-mouthed truck driver -- a love song writer? Yep. One evening back in 1984, he shows up with the lyrics to a song he'd titled Weekend Lovers. It was about a girlfriend he had at the time who he saw on weekends. He wanted me to put music to it, which I did, and it was recorded onto a cassette tape. (Remember them?) Soon he came up with other songs and one of those was a little ditty called Get Out Lout. This was a phrase, or demand, he'd apparently heard directed his way a time or two over the course of his life. Garry really loved Weekend Lovers and Get Out Lout. He used to say, "One day I'm going to introduce my song on the bona fide airways!"

CHECK OUT ●

The "bona fide airwaves" to him referred to the AM/FM channels where commercial radio stations broadcast. Garry died on Jan. 3, 2004. Before he died, he came by my place with a CD that had Get Out Lout on it. I sent it to my friend at CHIP-FM in Fort Coulonge, Quebec. And shortly after, I heard it played on the air. I smiled with a bit of a tear in my eye when I thought of how this tune (recorded on a "ghetto-blaster") somehow found its way onto mainstream FM radio. However, the best was yet to come. I recorded a version of Weekend Lovers in Almonte in 2002. Garry didn't like this version, but I included it on my Sounds Along the Line CD in 2002 anyway. Just to rub it in, you might say. I took a "rough introduction" in Garry's voice that he'd taped to introduce an older version of the song and then edited it onto the newer track. On Jan. 3, 2005, the first anniversary of his death, Linda Elliott announced on CHIP-FM at exactly 4:51 p.m. that she was going to "play a song by Lyle Dillabough." (Both Garry's CB radio handle and favourite number was 451) And what came on the air? None other than Garry's voice introducing Weekend Lovers. And sure enough, the song began to play, just like Garry said he would one day do. He introduced his song - in death nonetheless! Which only tells me one thing: that faith is one mighty force. And no matter what else we may endure in our lives there are times when all you can do is sit back, wonder, shake your head, and just smile. Lyle Dillabough is a local musician who writes for the Ottawa Valley newspapers. He can be reached at 613-257-9002 or email: lyleproductions@gmail.com.

SUPPORT LAWS WITH HOST OF EVENTS THROUGHOUT AUGUST Lots of upcoming events, so be sure to mark your calendars and come out to support the Lanark Animal Welfare Society. On Friday, Aug. 17 starting at 7 p.m. in Perth at Top Shelf Distillers (14 Warren Cres.), there's a parking lot party. There is going to be good food, fancy drinks and great music. As you dance the night away, hopefully under starry skies, staff of Top Shelf Distillers will be collecting money as well as supplies for LAWS. At this time canned cat and kitten food (Friskies preferred) as well as bottles of bleach is most needed.

Car wash and barbecue Looking to get your car washed before the end of summer? This is the time

Smiths Falls Ford will be hosting a car wash and barbecue in support of LAWS on Saturday, Aug. 25. Check in to our Facebook page for more details!

Adoption weekend Please mark your calendars for another scheduled adoption weekend in Perth at Pet Valu on Aug. 24-26. A LAWS representative will be available with adoptable kittens and cats during these days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More details on our Facebook pages as to who is coming closer to these dates. This week's featured pets • Velvet and Paws Please meet Velvet and Paws, two four-year-old sisters who had to be surren-

dered to LAWS for unforeseen family reasons. They've lived with other cats and love to be around children. They're both very friendly. Velvet is a little more outgoing then Paws, but we're sure once they're in their true forever home, they will both spoil you with their love and affection. They're both declawed on their front little paws and have to be adopted together. They are available for adoption in Carleton Place at Natural Pet Foods on Bridge Street. • Pete Hi, I am Pete, and my personality type is action! You won't find me sitting on the sidelines; I am always in for play and cuddle time. My previous family had

no time for me and because of that I was surrendered to LAWS. If you've got a lot of love and attention to give, and you're looking for a cat with loads of personality, I just might be the perfect match for you! • Al Al is a special two-yearold boy with extra toes on his front feet (polydactyl) and a long body with lovely markings. Deep buried in his genes he might have some Bengal in him. Al is ready for playtime and loves cuddles, but prefers to have all four paws on the ground. He would love to go to a quiet family. Follow us at www.facebook.com/lanarkanimals and/or lanarkanimals.ca. LAWS is located at 253 Glenview Rd., Smiths Falls.

OPINION

IN THE RUSH TO BE FIRST, ACCURACY SOMETIMES TAKES A BEATING, JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE Column

As a junior reporter, fresh out of journalism school, I'm sure I would never have considered writing a column like this. But after 47 years in the business and a lifetime following the news (my late father founded the Stittsville community newspaper) I have a very different view of how the media should govern itself. I'm concerned about

what I feel is a lack of balance demonstrated by some in the media, especially when it comes to covering the many tragedies which are all too common in the 21st century. The incredible reach and total saturation which spins from the worldwide web means news today especially bad news - travels fast. In journalism school we were taught to do a fair, objective, balanced and truthful job ("accurate" is a related word) of covering the news. For much of my long career in the newspaper business I felt that most journalists had those goals in mind. I would like to think the majority of news professionals still honour these objectives. Unfortunately in our modern society much of the instant news available via social media and the

Internet in general are posted by individuals with no news background. They are private citizens whose goal is to get the information out immediately. There is little if any thought given to how accurate their postings are or about the potential damage they can cause if the material in question is inaccurate or false. Ask witnesses to any news event what they saw and you are bound to get multiple, often very different, viewpoints. Therefore, the initial information reported is usually quite different from the news released by the authorities who investigate such occurrences. That is the weakness inherent to instant news! As for the mainstream media today I'm troubled by what I feel is the overkill related to major news stories. When a shooting,

explosion, plane crash or other major, negative occurrence comes to light the all-news stations and online news sources turn their coverage completely to that particular incident. Sadly, in the rush to be first, accuracy and truth sometimes take a beating. Two recent tragedies in Toronto are examples of this troubling trend. The van attack in April and the mass shooting in the city's Greektown neighbourhood last month. I am concerned about the depth and the duration of the coverage given to those terrible events and others around the world today. In Toronto some news outlets set everything else aside and focused exclusively on the tragedies I have just mentioned. The "saturation coverage" continued for

much of the following next week. In fairness the same kind of news approach is all too common in the wake of virtually every major event that happens today. There doesn't seem to be a "happy medium" anymore when it comes to the news. In fact I think the boundaries of good taste and common sense are being severely tested when it comes to media coverage in general today. It is somewhat alarming to see and hear the length and breadth of the media exposure given to the tragedies which are visiting us far too often these days. I would like to see some balance applied when it comes to news gathering in general, but especially relative to publicizing the senseless murders of our fellow human beings. At this point in time I believe things are askew in this regard! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com.

DONNA SEARLE 1934 - 2018

With the passing of Donna Lorraine Searle (nee Patterson) in her 85th year, we pause to celebrate a life well lived. Donna enjoyed several successful careers as an educator, a farmer and an office administrator. Donna, the only child of Dr. Walter Henry Patterson and Evelyn Carr Patterson of Holland, Manitoba, was born on August 17, 1934. After earning a B.A. at the University of Winnipeg, Donna enthusiastically pursued a career in Christian Education with the United Church of Canada in a variety of communities in Manitoba and Ontario. Her next calling was farming near Clayton, Ontario. Donna and Stan were married under the apple tree at their farm in August of 1971 and forged a successful partnership which introduced Charolais beef cattle to eastern Ontario. Not only was Donna adept at showing prize winning cattle in the ring but also kept busy showing her best in class Boston Terriers at major competitions in Ontario and the United States. When Donna retired from farming, she began a career in office administration. Her dedication and organizational excellence provided a valuable contribution to the work of Almonte cabinetmaker John Brathwaite and area lawyers, Mike Ross, Allan Jones and Brooke McNabb. Donna lived a long and happy life thanks to the support of her wonderful husband Stan and her family, friends and neighbours. In recent years, she treasured the caring professionalism of a wonderful human being, Dr. Roger Drake, and the loving care of the staff at Stoneridge Manor nursing home in Carleton Place, Ontario. A private family celebration will be held.

RAYMOND LECLAIR August 18, 2017 Remember him with a smile today, He was not one for tears, Reflect instead on memories, Of all the happy years. Recall to mind the way he spoke, And all the things he said, His strength, his stance, the way he walked, Remember these instead. The good advice he’d give us, His eyes that shone with laughter, So much of him will never die, But live on ever after. As we loved you, so we miss you, In our memory you are near, Loved, Remembered, longed for always, Bringing many a silent tear. Dearly missed Phyllis, Joanne, Oryst, Andrew, Devin & Muffie

The Upper Canada District School Board is proud to share that Canada's Premiers have honoured TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education with a Council of the Federation Literacy Award. This award recognizes outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy. The awards are presented annually, in each province and territory, to recognize the excellence of educators, volunteers, learners, community organizations and businesses in many areas including family, Indigenous, health, workplace and community literacy. "I'm really proud of the staff at all of our campuses. They do outstanding work with our students, not just teaching but forming relationships with them to understand their needs," said TR Leger principal Sandy McInnes. "Our champions are our program instructors. They create a culture of comfort and care for our students. They really get to know the learners coming in and align opportunities and resources with the interests of the students." UCDSB board chair Jeff McMillan added, "I am very proud of the work our staff does for students attending the TR Leger program. Through their dedication and commitment, so many of our students are given the opportunity to believe in themselves as learners." TR Leger has delivered the Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program, also known as the Skills, Training and Employment Preparation program, for more than 20 years. The program helps individuals build foundational literacy and digital skills that prepare

them for employment, independent living, pursuing an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or attending college or university. "Daphne Lane, our recently retired manager of literacy and language services, has really been a driving force in the development and implementation of digital literacy resources and training for our LBS program," McInnes said. TR Leger school serves approximately 450 adult literacy students annually, including a class in the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional Facility. "Last year, 64 per cent of our students went on to employment or further education and training," said McInnes. "As part of the school improvement process, TR Leger principal Sandy McInnes and his administration team have led learning teams that have focused specifically on improving literacy skills for our adult learners," said superintendent Tim Mills. "This award is a testament to their dedication and hard work on behalf of our staff, students and the communities that TR Leger serves." TR Leger school has campuses in Alexandria, Almonte, Brockville, Carleton Place, Casselman, Cornwall, Dundas, Gananoque, Hawkesbury, Kemptville, Morrisburg, Perth, Prescott, Rockland, and Smiths Falls, with an instructor at each campus and two managers who oversee the program. More information on the Council of the Federation Literacy Awards can be found at www.canadaspremiers.ca. Submitted by the Upper Canada District School Board

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, a budding relationship is ready to be taken to the next level. Devote the time necessary to make that happen, as doing so can further build on an already strong foundation.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, embrace your inner storyteller in the days ahead. Family and friends will want to catch up, and sharing memorable moments can be fun.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, words flow effortlessly from your lips this week, and others are captivated by your tales. You can use this power and creative streak to your advantage.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, make a concerted effort to keep lines of communication open in the days ahead. This can benefit you and your loved ones in some surprising ways.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you may have been a little preoccupied of late. Focus on what has been on your mind and how it is affecting your relationships, making changes where necessary.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you feel like you are in the driver’s seat as it pertains to your love life and relationship this week. But a partnership requires sharing responsibilities.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Relationships with friends and associates have significant influence on your life this week, Leo. They can create new business opportunities and expand your social circle.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, nearly everything you do this week will be connected to your career. Strategic moves come easily to you, and certain pieces may fall into place just when you need them to.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 There is fun to be had in the days ahead, Virgo. Embrace any opportunity to have some fun, rewarding yourself for all your recent hard work.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, there is a time to share your dreams, and this week may be the perfect time to do just that. Open up to your closest loved ones.
