The music festival had 12 different performers and bands set up on local porches over three hours with an after party at two different locations downtown. Angelique Francis may not be a name that you know yet, but once you hear her, you won't be able to forget it! This talented young woman has had many highs in her musical career and still has a lifetime of them to come. Starting her career at age seven, she made her television debut at 13, when she wrote and composed an original song for the Gayle King Show on the Oprah Network. She has toured the world and has become well known for her multi-talented, multiinstrumental playing, singing, songwriting and composing. She is known for her eclectic mix of musical genres including blues, soul, folk, jazz and rock.

Francis has toured all over and this summer is no exception. The Station Theatre in Smiths Falls is pleased to have her fit us in to her very busy summer schedule. In between stops at the Ottawa Jazz Festival and Bluesfest, which will have much larger audiences, we are thrilled to have her here in our intimate 140-seat theatre. Not only is this talented musician known as one of Canada's top emerging blues artists, she is also recognized for her volunteer work with various charities and youth mentorship programs. Over the past few years, Francis has received the following recognition for her volunteer efforts: An Ontario Leading Women Building Com-

munities Award (this award honours women who have made a significant difference in their communities in the province of Ontario), a Global Alliance Community Builder Award (for giving back to the community through music), and an Art Child Award (youth making a difference through art). Francis is at the Station Theatre on Friday, June 29 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are $30, all in, and can be purchased with cash at Special Greetings, 8 Russell St. E., or with a credit card online at www.smithsfallstheatre.com or by phone at 613-2830300. – submitted by The Smiths Falls Community Theatre

On Saturday, June 23, the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) invites you to Discover Dragonflies and Butterflies at the High Lonesome Nature Reserve. This outing is being led by local ecologist and nature enthusiast Ken Allison, who has been studying these insects for more than 30 years, after being introduced to them by his children. There are more than 120 species of dragonflies (including damselflies) and more than 100 species of butterflies in eastern Ontario, and by late June, adults of many species of these insects should be flying at the Nature Reserve. With many beaver ponds, marshes and swamps at High Lonesome, we can expect to see many beautiful and interesting dragonflies

and damselflies that breed in these still waters. The wide range of habitats at High Lonesome also ensures that there are many types of plants present, providing opportunities for a wide range of butterfly species. Be ready to be surprised by the beauty of these small creatures as you spend a couple of hours wandering the trails of this gem of a nature reserve, observing the dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies along the way. Take binoculars, waterproof footwear and an insect net, if you have one. Registration starts at 10 a.m., and we'll head out by 10:30 a.m. Admission is by a $10 donation. This event is sponsored by Gilligallou Bird Inc., eastern Ontario's backyard birding specialty

store. Visit gillagallou.com for more. High Lonesome Nature Reserve is one of eight properties and more than 2,700 acres of ecological significant land in eastern Ontario now protected in perpetuity by MMLT. It is located at 867 Carbine Rd., outside Pakenham. Take County Road 29 to Pakenham Village, turn on Waba Road, and continue west for 2.9 kilometres. Turn left on Barr Side Road and travel for 1.6 km. Take the first left at Carbine Road and drive 4 km, to 867 Carbine Road. Please visit mmlt.ca/ event/discover-dragonflies-butterflies for more details and for a map to the property. – submitted by the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust

It was June 8, 1948 when the charter was signed for the formation of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 475 Toledo. This was the result of the vision and dedication of 19 area veterans from the First and Second World Wars. They were: Stewart Hamilton, Charles Gray, Kenneth Johnston, Gerald "Joe" Lawson, O. Gardiner, L. Cahill, Ernest Allen, Eldon Mackie, Ronald Mott, Garnet Struthers, Earl Phillips, Gordon Johnston, James "Jim" Bell, M. Thornhill, Wilfred Letourneau, W.E. Bell, L. de Wolfe, Clifford Gray and B. Seeley. Fast forward to Saturday, June 9 when the Toledo legion hosted an open house to acknowledge 70 years in existence. There were exhibits recognizing the history of the branch, some sports demonstrations, hamburgers, hotdogs, cake and lots of visiting. The highlight of the afternoon was honouring 70 years of continuous legion membership of charter member, Eldon Mackie. Eldon is the last survivor of the original 19 members. Unfortunately, due to illness, Eldon could not attend but his son Grant was happy to accept his awards. Eldon was awarded a 70year legion membership lapel pin as well as a certificate of merit. The pin and certificate were presented by legion Zone G2 com-

the Thoms' boys, and Audrey had planned on having her friend Iva over. I was delighted. I got to sit in the front seat, jammed between Mother and Father, and the three boys and Audrey were packed like sardines in the back. They had to take turns sitting on the floor, which my sister had no intention of doing, since she had worn her best white dress to church, and the remains of the last sheep haul were still there. We had barely passed our lane on the way to Douglas when the trouble started. Earl, the youngest had been on the floor since we left church, and he decided he had had enough of the sheep dung, and it was time someone else changed places. When no one offered to change, Earl either bit Emerson on the leg, or jabbed him with his penknife, but the roars could be heard in Douglas still a few miles away. Emerson said he was going to bleed to death, Audrey said he didn't even have a scratch, and Everett asked Father to stop the car, because he wanted to walk back to the farm and get away from all the fighting. All this time Father never said a word, which was his usual way of dealing with a family fight. I could see him starting to chew on his pipe. Without a word coming out of his mouth, he wheeled the old car into someone's lane, pulled a U-

We were barely stopped when the four in the back seat fell out of the car, Audrey crying that her dress was ruined, Emerson limping and saying he was pretty sure he might lose his leg, Earl heading for the pump where he put his head under the spout and let the cold well water pour over his entire body, and Everett heading for the Bonnechere River. I followed Mother into the house, and Father stayed seated in the front seat of the Model T chewing on his pipe, looking straight ahead like he was in a trance. I was pretty sure it would be a long time before we again went for a Sunday drive after church. – Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? ABOUT US

Caution: roadwork ahead Construction season is upon us and with that comes an increased need for motorists to pay attention and adjust their driving accordingly. The price for not doing so can be devastating. It was just two years ago in April 2016 when Daniel William Milton, 42, was hit and killed by a vehicle while working at a highway construction project on Highway 17 west of Campbell Drive in Arnprior. Another worker was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital. In the fall of that year, a 70-year-old man was charged with careless driving. This fall, an inquest will be held in Renfrew to examine the events surrounding Milton's death. The jury may then make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. And with the many road construction projects underway in the Ottawa Valley and beyond, OPP are reminding motorists of the importance of construction zone safety and reducing speed when entering construction zones. The County of Lanark recently unveiled its summer construction plans, which include $7.75 million in work, including complete pavement preservation on 57.3 kilometres with rehabilitation and paved shoulders on 29.7 kilometres, including portions of Roger Stevens Drive in Montague, Appleton Side Road, Wolf Grove Road in Almonte, as well as major work on the Ashton Bridge, near Carleton Place. Traffic will be reduced to one lane for many of the projects. OPP say drivers are advised to proceed with caution when approaching a construction zone and to obey all warning signs, people and/or devices that are directing traffic through the area. It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to disobey STOP or SLOW signs displayed by a traffic-control person. Lower speeds are often posted in construction zones to increase worker safety and to reflect increased road hazards such as construction vehicles, uneven or gravel surfaces and narrowed lanes, say OPP. Motorists are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present. There are ways to be as prepared as possible for what you might encounter on the roads. Information on roads and construction projects in Ontario can be accessed through the Ministry of Transportation's Traveller Information Services, which provides road information for provincial highways in Ontario, by calling 511 or by visiting the MTO Ontario 511 website at www.ontario.ca/511. Let's respect workers by making the choice to drive safely this summer.

Resident says mayoral candidates need to 'walk the walk' DEAR EDITOR: Statements by the two candidates for Carleton Place mayor (Louis Antonakos and Jerry Flynn) are quite interesting but hardly credible and somewhat lacking. Both candidates purport "highest level of integrity and honesty" and "keeping tax increases to a minimum" in supporting our community. However, what is said and the actions they take tell a different story. In February 2018 both candidates as members of council voted in favour of the proposed Bodnar lands subdivision just above the

The conditions attached to the development of this subdivision are not adequate given the potential impact of the contaminated storm water on the Mississippi River and the safety and security of our drinking water. I phoned later to let them know how I was and to thank them, and then the manager got on the phone. To all who helped me, a giant thank you. Dianne Cunliffe, Smiths Falls

If you are patient enough to tap into it, we want nothing more than to show our affection. us, then please meet us at LAWS. Fabio Hi, I am Fabio and I am two years old. I look a bit funny as they shaved my lovely fur because it was severely matted and dirty when I arrived at LAWS. I am a bit of everything you'd expect from a cat. Although I enjoy a bit of quiet time, I am no couch potato either. My toys are packed and I'm ready for adventure when you're ready to play.

I like affection, but I am comfortable to entertain myself until you're ready for me to warm your lap. I guess I am just a little bit of all good things wrapped up in a steady funny body and as a bonus I come with extra toes. I like other cats too! I suppose you could say I am pretty much 'purr'fect. Jeff Maguire writes about the Ontario election The contentious Ontario election campaign is now behind us and if you are like me you're probably glad it is. By the time June 7 rolled around I was thoroughly sick of the negative election advertising and I just wanted to see the end of the process. And this was a relatively short campaign! Doug Ford and the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party rode a towering wave of voter discontent to a convincing majority win something that surprised many people. Especially those who paid close attention to some of the election polls which are now a daily part of any and every election in Canada.

JEFF MAGUIRE Column I've never been a fan of election polls because I feel they can unduly influence uneducated voters and help swing the vote one way or another. There are a lot of people out there who vote without the benefit of much, if any, information about individual candidates or the platforms of the parties they represent. I think you should know something about the individual and the party you intend to vote for.

Please keep our community clean!

My concern is that certain polls appear to be released with no qualification. For example, what was the methodology used to compile the poll information? What was the sample size? Are certain polls done independently or are they party driven? To me those factors make a huge difference in terms of whether a particular poll can be considered legitimate. In fact what this pre-election hype did was reinforce my strong feeling that the only poll that really matters is the official one on election day. – Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. He has been writing for community and daily newspapers in Ontario since 1971. He can be reached by email at: jeffrey.maguire@rogers.com

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Carleton Place to officially dedicate woods after late Ed Sonnenburg TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com The legacy of the late Ed Sonnenburg will live on in the Carleton Place woods bearing his name. On Saturday, June 23, the town will officially dedicate Sonnenburg Woods, with the ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. During the council meeting on June 12, chief administrative officer Diane Smithson shared the news. The one-time deputy mayor passed away from pancreatic cancer in August 2014. Sonnenburg was 66. Sonnenburg Woods, located at 13 Bates Drive, is a 20-acre forest. It boasts a natural, non-maintained trail. Coun. Theresa Fritz asked: "Should we invite the members of the previous council who served with Mr. Sonnenburg?" "I think it might be a nice gesture, considering he died while in office," she added. Deputy Mayor Jerry Flynn concurred. Coun. Doug Black suggested inviting a representative or two from St. James Anglican Church, "since we purchased the property (woods) from them."

The legacy of the late Ed Sonnenburg will live on in the Carleton Place woods bearing his name. On June 23, a Saturday, the town will officially dedicate Sonnenburg Woods, with the ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. Mayor Louis Antonakos noted: "Who should be included on the invite list...we should leave it with our staff and the Sonnenburg family." "Diane, whatever, you think (is best), but I thought inviting those who served with Mr. Sonnenburg

would be a nice touch," Fritz stated. Sonnenburg served nearly two terms as Carleton Place's deputy mayor, from 2006-2010 and 2010-2014. He also ran for mayor in 2003 challenging the late Brian Costello (incumbent) and Paul

Dulmage. Dulmage won. Throughout his time on council Sonnenburg served on a number of committees and boards: recreation and culture, accessibility advisory, inter-community recreational sharing and Carleton Place & District Youth Centre, just to name a few. For more than a decade he was an active member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 192, and he was a steward and the board chair at Zion-Memorial United Church. Sonnenburg loved Carleton Place, working hard on behalf of the community and its residents, and he was never afraid to court controversy when it was required. For 35 years Sonnenburg worked for the federal government, with the Department of National Defence. During his cancer fight, Sonnenburg settled on a stricter chemotherapy regime...he was determined to beat the disease. Too, it was a municipal election year (2014) and he wanted to seek the role of deputy mayor again, even taking out his nomination papers. However, the devoted family man passed away a little more than two months before the election.

Perth, Rockland and many who performed on their own porch. Organizer Nathan Rudyk was inspired after a trip to Montreal last spring when he happened upon a similar festival there. "Based on the crowds we have Montreal smoked,"

said Rudyk. The music festival was the perfect complement to the Tour de Mississippi Mills bike race part of bike month. "Jeff Mills inspired me, he always dreamed of an extension of the Tour de Mississippi Mills, I got a lot of help from him and the town," said Rudyk who ad-

mits he was scared with the number of bands he had booked. Rudyk calls the turnout tremendous. When asked if the PorchFest will be back next year. "I don't think I have a choice," said Rudyk with a laugh. "Yes, it will be back. I'm thinking we can be proud of ourselves."

Carleton Place welcomes huge crowd to Lambs Down Park Festival TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It was a baaaa time. But a good time was had by all at the annual Lambs Down Park Festival presented by the Downtown Carleton Place BIA on the grounds of the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers on June 16. The event included local artisans, demonstrations and more. Kate Murray, BIA co-ordinator, was very pleased with the turnout and estimated more than 1,000 people came through the grounds. "It's a fantastic day with such a cross-section of people," said Murray. "It all ties in with the old wool growers who have been around for a 100 years and it connects the new comers to town." The Art Shack was also officially debuted and will now be at the local library with art supplies and will showcase local art and artists.

Giant Tiger in Carleton Place will partner with Canadian Blood Services to offer a blood typing service to customers as well as interested members of the public on Tuesday, June 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. A blood typing booth will be set up at the store so individuals may learn their blood type on the spot. Participants will have their finger pricked to obtain three tiny drops of blood that are then mixed with three different antiserums. These three anti-serums determine what the participant's blood type is. It takes about three minutes, and is a fun interactive way to learn about your blood type. Participants must fill out a consent form and be at least 17 years of age to take part. No appointment needed, please drop in. Giant Tiger owner, Ray Maclaren decided to host this event as a way to share his family's commitment and support of their community's blood donor clinics. In May of 2017, Ray's wife Kristine was diagnosed with a leio-

myo sarcoma - a rare form of cancer originating from smooth muscle. In June 2017, she underwent a round of pre-operative chemo before major surgery to remove an extremely aggressive tumour from her abdomen. During surgery on Aug. 2, 2017 a major vein was cut and Kristine required close to 30 units of blood to survive. Since her surgery, Kristine has received eight more units of blood. She continues her battle with cancer. The July 12 Carleton Place blood donor clinic will be held in honour of Kristine. She will be at the clinic welcoming donors and thanking them for their blood donations. The clinic will be held at St. James Anglican Church from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Giant Tiger is located at 320 Coleman Street. To book an appointment at the Carlton Place Blood Donor Clinic, use the GiveBlood app, call 1888-2DONATE or visit www.blood.ca. – submitted by Canadian Blood Services

When a friend suggested he look into purchasing a Tim Hortons Restaurant, things fell perfectly into place. Tim Hortons’ presence in youth hockey immediately gave him the chance to get involved in sports again, but this time in his local community. Now, whether he and his staff are volunteering at Timbits Hockey Jamborees or supporting Junior A games, there’s no event, or player, too small that isn’t deserving of a helping hand. The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a 64-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound in Almonte. On Tuesday, June 12 at approximately 10:15 a.m., two Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers attended an Almonte home to followup on an investigation. According to the SIU, while on the porch of the residence, two dogs exited the home and both officers sustained bite injuries. One officer discharged her firearm multiple times at one of the dogs. One of the bullets struck the woman who was on the porch with the officers. As a result, the woman and both officers were taken to the Almonte General Hospital for treatment. The dog died at the scene. Currently, four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The SIU is asking any members of the public with information involving this investigation to call 1800-787-8529. Almonte student named Colby McGeachy bursary recipient TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com A Grade 12 student at Almonte and District High School (ADHS) has earned a $1,500 bursary from Almonte-based Colby McGeachy Professional Corp. (CMPC). Christina Reid is the public accounting firm's 2018 recipient, receiving her cheque and a framed certificate on June 7. Attending the presentation were CMPC principals Everett Colby and Dawn McGeachy, and office administrator Angela Rogers, along with resource development manager Beth Sinclair from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County. Rogers, Sinclair and historical costume designer, painter and glass artist Ingrid Harris of Almonte made up the bursary selection committee. Sinclair and Harris are former teachers. The CMPC bursary is open to graduating students from ADHS, Carleton Place High School and Notre Dame Catholic High School - also in Carleton Place. It was established to

assist a student who demonstrates academic excellence and commitment to his or her studies and who is pursuing a bachelor of commerce, accounting science, economics, finance or business degree. Reid has maintained a B+ average throughout high school. She is headed to Nipissing University in North Bay this fall. There, Reid will work toward a dual degree - bachelor of commerce and bachelor of psychology. "Two full degrees in five years instead of eight," she told the Canadian Gazette. "My ultimate goal is to become an accountant." Upon hearing she received CMPC's bursary, she said, "I was really excited." It happened on May 24, when she was on her way to the Dominican Republic. Reid recently finished up an almost five-month co-op placement at CMPC, gaining valuable experience. "We are certainly going to miss her," McGeachy said. Reid heard about CMPC's annual bursary from her sister, a past recipient.

Christina Reid of Almonte, a Grade 12 student at Almonte and District High School, has received a $1,500 bursary from Almonte-based Colby McGeachy Professional Corporation. She was presented with her cheque and a certificate from firm principal Everett Colby on June 7.

Essay By way of an essay, CMPC bursary applicants must detail who they are as well as explain how the bursary will benefit them.

"I feel a bursary from (CMPC) would help me accomplish my dreams," Reid wrote. At times, life has been a struggle for her parents. "My dad has seen two

plant closures ... losing his job has been a hardship financially," Reid explained. She is the last of three children to go to university. "Because of our family situation, I will be paying

for university myself," Reid noted. She added: "The (CMPC) would take me a step closer to my dream of completing a post-secondary education. It would solidify my belief it takes a community to raise a child." An Almonte native, Reid is actively involved in her community. She has been a public speaker on the importance of youth, a volunteer for Puppets Up! and The Hub, a web leader at ADHS and Notre Dame Catholic High School, a student ambassador with Future Voters and a coach with the Almonte Soccer Club. Currently, she plays ball hockey with the Almonte Women's Ball Hockey and works at Equator Coffee Roasters. McGeachy stressed CMPC's focus is on youth. On the subject of CMPC's giving back, Reid noted: "These simple acts of kindness in life make struggles shallower, make people work harder, be kinder and go out of their way to do something nice." Someday, she hopes to pay it forward, by helping someone out financially.

Sean MacKenzie, lead builder from Dominion Masonry, puts a pizza in the new Friendship Oven.

said during his opening speech on the new Friendship Oven. The event was also a fundraiser for the Mississippi Mills Youth Centre which sold fresh pizzas after the official speeches were over. Mills stressed the oven is not just for pizza, but sees it being used by market-goers and others who want to learn to cook. The project received a $5,000 grant from the Elizabeth Kelly Library Foundation Inc. and funds from The Hub (Almonte Community Co-ordinators) as well as numerous individuals in the community, the town was also a partner as they gave the Friendship Oven a home at the library. As Mills explained the delicate

process Sean MacKenzie, lead builder from Dominion Masonry, encountered as he built the oven, his voice cracked with emotion. "He has been here for hours and I just love this guy," said Mills. MacKenzie hit the foundation of the old train station, uncovered old rails that will be incorporated in to the finished product and they even obtained some bricks from the old Co-Op building. "It's nice for any of us heritage buffs that we were able to use some of the old stone from the old train station," said Mills. The next steps in the process is to establish some basic rules to use it. Mills stresses they don't want to limit the use but people need to take a brief course on how

Phone: 613-256-2064 • 1-888-779-8666

to use it. He hopes people will develop the rules to use it. "We want people to use it and put the right amount of rules and training in place so as many people as possible can use this," said Mills. A public meeting for anyone who wants to use the oven going forward will be held on June 25 at 7 p.m. at the Almonte Library to help discuss some of the rules. Mississippi Mills Mayor Shaun McLaughlin shared a story from his youth when he used to go out with friends camping and cooked hotdogs over a fire. "What I remember wasn't the food, it was the bond of cooking outdoors," said McLaughlin. "This oven offers that bond and will teach people how to cook."

New Gemmill Park includes splash pad, play structures TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com It made quite the splash! Saturday, June 16, was the perfect day to cut the ribbon for the new splash pad at Gemmill Park in Almonte as the sun beamed down and kids laughed as the water sprayed them. Saturday also marked the official opening of the new play structure at the park that was well used by children of all ages. The park now features accessible pathways, three accessible washrooms, play structures/ swings, a splash pad and a skate park that was completed in the summer of 2017. Mississippi Mills Mayor Shaun McLaughlin told the large crowd that when he campaigned in 2014 in Almonte the most common requests from people, especially those with young children or grandchildren, was a splash pad. "Today, we inaugurate our new water playground, which complements the play structure and skateboard park. This site of-

fers something for kids and youth of any ages," said McLaughlin. He went on to thank Calvin Murphy, the recreation manager, for managing what he called an often complicated project. He also thanked other town staff and his fellow councillors.McLaughlin was also thankful for the grants they received to help with the project. The Gemmill Park Campus project received $208,010 through the Canada 150 community infrastructure program from the federal government and $25,985 grant through the Ontario Tire Stewardship's 2016 community renewal fund, which paid for 50 per cent of the total cost to install rubber matting under the new play structure area. Derek Kilburn was pleased with the new improvements to the park. "I really like it. I've been hoping for a (splash pad) for a long time," said Kilburn, just one of the many parents on hand with his kids. "We are finally enjoying it." Re-elected MPP Randy Hillier kicks off victory tour TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com After being returned to Queen's Park for a fourth consecutive time by voters on June 7, Progressive Conservative MPP Randy Hilli-

er kicked off a victory tour of the municipalities in his Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston riding. On June 12, Hillier made his first stop in Carleton Place, speaking at the start of the policy review meet-

ing. Mayor Louis Antonakos noted the re-elected MPP wanted to "give us a sense of where we are headed when the new government is formed." "Things have changed,"

Interested members of the community are invited to attend the

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of the

ALMONTE GENERAL HOSPITAL CORPORATION

POSTPONED Date To Be Determined Octagon Room, (95 Spring Street Dining Room)

Hillier stressed. "The change that happened last week signals a transformative change in our relationships between the provincial government and our municipal partners." "I know we have heard that term often - municipal partners - in the past," he added. "Over the last decade, however, I do not believe it has actually been a partnership so much." Hillier talked about a couple of key priorities he is going to be advancing. "We have seen over the last decade an imposing of responsibilities on municipalities as well as an imposing of prescriptive processes on how you are to executive those responsibilities ... without proper funding mechanisms, without certainty in funding mechanisms," he said. "That is not indicative of a partnership," the politician continued. "A partnership is not big brother telling little brother what to do

and how to do it, and go find your own money to make it happen." Hillier believes it is critical this relationship be changed. "Municipalities should have greater autonomy in their own determinations and decision-making," he said. "Greater autonomy with respect to funding and executing those responsibilities." The other priority is predictability and certainty on the funding relationship between the provincial government and municipalities, especially regarding infrastructure. "That needs to alter substantially ... from this lottery-type process we have in place now where there is no certainty." The re-elected MPP believes it is critical municipal councils work with the government to advocate for these changes. "If you have questions or things you want to advance, my door is always

open and my phone is always on," Hillier told council members. "On behalf of council and all residents, congratulations on your success," Antonakos said. "We look forward to working with you."

Premier-designate Doug Ford takes office on June 29. He will be tasked with compiling a cabinet to form his government. Antonakos assured council he has already prebooked a meeting with Hillier and "whoever the new minister of infrastructure might be" to discuss Central Bridge, the main crossing on Bridge Street near the town hall. Owing to a detailed structural analysis of the bridge, this past December council heard it is too far gone and replacement is recommended. The structure would be constructed in stages and cost millions.

Passing on Hope, a Message of Optimism When a large tractor rolls over you, it’s an understatement that your life will never be the same; Almonte resident Thad N. can tell you all about it. In spite of catastrophic injuries, Thad stands here today, eight months after his life-threatening accident with a message of optimism, “passing on hope.” Statistically, Thad’s chances were nil. Six weeks after his accident, an AGH nurse told Thad he was the first patient she knew of to survive a tractor-roll in 35 years. She was thrilled to see his progress. When asked about that day the accident occurred, Thad uses a tone of calm acceptance, “It happened in slow motion; I felt the wheel move up my body, I heard and felt every crunch, one snapping sound after the other.”

The pressure of the trauma created pressure which exploded behind his eyes, “As the wheel slowed its path, I understood, I am 34 years old and I am likely going to die if I don’t do something. When the Lanark County Paramedics arrived, they performed a ground search at his address. Once transported to the AGH Emergency department, the medical team worked to stabilize him for the flight to Ottawa. The doctors at AGH could not completely advise the trauma centre in Ottawa of the exact extent of Thad’s injuries without the benefit of a CT scanner. A CT would have shown his punctured lung. Time was ticking, and Thad had already spent three hours fighting for his life in a cold field.

and purpose. Remembering the quality of care he received first in Almonte from the Paramedics and Emergency staff, then the Transport Team and Emergency staff in Ottawa, and then back here at AGH throughout his recovery, Thad wants to pay forward all that good will. He says of paramedics and hospital staff, “they are the true heroes working silently for all of us.” So, when people ask about his story, he welcomes the opportunity to share that challenges can be overcome. He calls it, “passing on hope.”

to replace all of its diagnostic imaging equipment and he sees sharing his story as a way of ‘putting himself in the picture’ to reinforce how important these diagnostic tools can be. Thad’s voice of “passing on hope” comes at a great time. Because sometimes when you need a CT scan, you don’t want to have to wait. You want it to be available close to home.

15 | Carleton Place/Almonte Canadian Gazette | Thursday, June 21, 2018

Dear Neighbours, There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching someone you care about experience trauma or illness. What if your loved one had a life-threatening accident like being pinned under a tractor? Or they felt dizzy, and suddenly their chest tightened? What if their doctor felt a lump in their neck during a routine check-up? Or they had recurring or sudden abdominal pain? All of these scenarios and more happen in our community every day, however we don’t have a CT scanner that can help diagnose such health problems. That is why we are writing you today, to ask for your assistance to help us bring a CT scanner to the Almonte General Hospital. The purchase of a CT scanner will help provide faster and more accurate diagnosis of a wide range of diseases and conditions that can’t be detected even with our new ultrasounds or X-rays. As a member of this community, you know this hospital is vital to you, your family and the community! A gift today of $500, $250 or $100 would bring us steps closer to purchasing this life-saving equipment. And if you prefer, we also have our monthly giving option where you can give $25, $15, $12 or your choice every month as well. Currently, we have to transfer patients to a hospital in Renfrew, Smith Falls or Ottawa to obtain a CT scan. The result for the patient is not only inconvenience and the expense of travel, but also stress related to delayed time for diagnosis. Care close to home would be so much better! As you can read on the previous page, when Almonte area resident, Thad N. reached our Emergency with life-threatening injuries, doctors knew they would have to transfer him by air ambulance to another hospital with a trauma centre. If we had a CT Scanner, they would have been able to more accurately inform the medical team at the other end about his precarious condition. As Thad lay incapacitated in a field for hours after his tractor rolled over him, his situation was terrifying. He was seriously injured and had to wait for his eyesight to return just enough to dial his cell phone for an ambulance. Time was of the essence; there was no-one around, and the clock was ticking. When he finally arrived at Almonte General Hospital, the doctors stabilized him to get him on an air ambulance to Ottawa. If we had the CT scanner, we would have been able to determine the severity of his injuries and shave precious time off his diagnosis and treatment. Thad had experienced a traumatic crush injury, and we did not have the right tool at a time when there was so little time to spare. He had a punctured lung, and he was bleeding to death; a CT scan would have shown the medical team this lifethreatening injury. But it is not just accidents or emergency health problems that the CT scanner can help. The CT scanner is a leading edge diagnostic tool for non-emergency conditions as well. Did you know that a CT scanner can find blood clots and internal bleeding? Heart disease? Abnormal abdominal conditions? It can even detect cancer in the abdomen, chest, brain and lymphatic systems. Don’t you think it is time we had a CT scanner at our hospital? We do. And we have done the leg-work to make sure it is feasible too. Please help us with a donation today? Your investment in our ‘Put Yourself in the Picture’ campaign helps ensure that you and your family will have the care you need when you need it. For this reason, we are asking for your help so we can make this happen as a community and bring this much-needed CT scanner to Almonte General Hospital. So, may we count on your donation today? Sincerely, Rhonda Virgin, Co-Chair

Why make a monthly donation?

We must fundraise 100% of the cost to purchase a CT scanner. Monthly giving allows us to project more effectively so we can plan out how we’ll pay for this new machine. Your ongoing commitment will make a big difference.

BLAZING DAY FOR ANNUAL FIRE GAMES IN BECKWITH

| Carleton Place/Almonte Canadian Gazette | Thursday, June 21, 2018

The Beckwith Fire Department hosted the 106th annual Eastern Ontario Firefighters' Association Games at Beckwith Park on Saturday, June 16. The event consisted of teams from North Augusta, Cornwall, Beckwith, Winchester, Carleton Place and Mississippi Mills. Each team was tested in a variety of events including relay, endurance, fitness and more. Once the games were finished, the firefighters marched in a parade from the school and enjoyed a dinner and a dance at the Beckwith Recreation Complex. Below right, Austen Hemsley gives dad Justin Hemsley, a member of the Mississippi Mills Fire Department, a big hug during a break in action. Top right, one of the last events was the bucket brigade, where teams scooped water and raced to the top of the ladder to fill a drum. Above, members of the Beckwith Township Fire Department race off the start line during one of the relay races.

What a Party! Thanks For Your Support 65 years of caring and lending a helping hand at Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital is a great reason to celebrate - and the CPDMH Auxiliary did just that at their “Happy Anniversary Bash” on June 2nd. The community family day at Riverside Park was a big hit with something for everyone from parrots and reptiles to entertainment and a BBQ. There was even a Teddy Bear MASH tent, hosted by three CPDMH doctors. More than 25 Auxilians plus other hospital and community volunteers were on hand to help. “We wanted to thank our supportive community,” notes Marg Leblanc, Auxiliary President. “Seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces and how much fun everyone was having made all the work worth it. I think the Auxiliary members had more fun than anybody else!” Thank you to the amazing CPDMH volunteers for everything you do - every day. Happy Anniversary! ROARING INTO RETIREMENT As I embark on this new chapter of my life called Retirement, I can’t help but recognize the outstanding people that have been part of my Nursing journey. As an RPN at Lanark Lodge for 35 years, I have had the privilege of working with incredible staff. My interaction with every department throughout the years only confirms the utmost appreciation and respect I have for each and everyone of you. I want to thank you for all you do in your work and for you to know that it’s been an absolute honour to have worked alongside you all these past many years. My hope for you is that you continue to be proud of the work you do, the person you are and the difference you make. Another special part of my work life and heart has been the relationships I have formed with our residents and their families. This is what got me up and going every day. They are why I do what I do and I am so fortunate that I have been able to do this for 35 years. Now, onto the next adventure and chapter of Retirement life. Cheers Cindy Young RPN

November 2, 1929 May 28, 2018 Henry passed away peacefully at home in Carleton Place on Monday, May 28th. Born in Holbaek, Denmark, he chose to make Canada his new home and moved here in 1952 with Bente Jorgensen, where they settled and raised their four children on Grandview Road. An entrepreneur extraordinaire, Henry successfully established businesses both in Ottawa and on Vancouver Island. An avid outdoorsman and carpenter by trade, he built Pan-Abode log homes, flew his own float plane to build cottages in eastern Ontario and Quebec, traveled internationally to teach others about constructing log homes, and entertained guests from around the world at a bed and breakfast he and wife of 42 years, Patricia, ran in Victoria. Never one to let any moss grow under his feet, Henry always said there could only be one boss and he lived life his way. Survived by his wife, Patricia, his children [Anita, Kathy (Mark), Sonja (Grant), Brian and Teri], his grandchildren [Davin, Kirsten (Richard), Brett, Braden and Ryley], and his great-grandchildren [Torben and Tecwyn]. He leaves behind of legacy of what it means to live your life to the fullest. He always said he wished he could do it one more time because he had so much fun. We should all be so lucky! Henry’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 23rd from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at 244 William Street in Carleton Place. We invite all who were fortunate enough to have had an opportunity to get to know Henry in some way to join us and share stories and memories. Please stop by and enjoy some Danish-style smorgasbord, the meal he enjoyed the most, and lift a glass and skål the memory of a man who will be missed by many. More excitement, music at Almonte Celtfest July 6-8 Almonte Celtfest promises more excitement again this year, July 6, 7 and 8, at Gemmill Park in the heart of Almonte. Once again, this familyfriendly festival known for its high-calibre music and up and coming artists, begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening with cabarets at the Almonte Old Town Hall, legion, Crooked Mile Brewery, Equator Coffee, the Barley Mow and Naismith Pub. Perhaps the greatest highlight this year is Canada's beloved Heather Rankin, who is scheduled to appear as the final act on Sunday. The much-loved Steel City Rovers, and many other fabulous performers precede Rankin, promise to make this year's Almonte Celtfest one of the best lineups in recent memory. As always, admission to all the festival activities (except the Celtic College) is by donation at the gate. Following Pub Night Friday evening, the excitement continues Saturday, July 7 with Celtic College music workshops (topics to be announced later, keep checking our website - www.almonteceltfest.com) in the morning. The day's entertainment on the main stage in Gemmill Park begins with opening ceremonies at noon. A wide-ranging sample of Celtic performers, including local, regional, nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians appears in the daylong lineup, culminating with lots more foot-stomping music by the Steel City Rovers. There is no going home for supper that day because you won't want to miss any of the outstanding headliners, a few of whom include Miller|MacDonald|Cormier, Ian Foster, Heather Dale Band, and Shane Cook and the Woodchippers. This exceptional list of Celtic artists defies description, but one thing is certain - there is something for all Celtic-music

lovers, no matter their favourite genre. As all the plans unfold, be sure to check out the schedule on the Almonte Celtfest website and follow us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to learn more about each of the bands and individual performers. Sunday, July 8 will dawn brightly no matter the weather with the beloved Fiddle Mass at 10:30 a.m., held at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Almonte. At noon, the music continues in Gemmill Park as the Monday Night Fiddlers lead off a very special lineup. There won't be a piece of grass available by the time Heather Rankin performs, so make sure you get there early to enjoy all the performers throughout the afternoon. A traditional highlight of Celtfest is the announcement on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., of the Danny O'Connell Memorial Scholarship Award winner, followed by entertainment by this year's award recipient. Since 2004, this financial recognition is awarded to an Ottawa Valley youth 25 years or younger whose talents are extraordinary in the Celtic music genre. This memorial fund was established to honour Danny O'Connell, a remarkable fiddler who frequented the Almonte Celtfest stage during his career. While many people bring a picnic and lawn chairs to enjoy the outdoor festival, you can readily purchase food and refreshments from the many wagons and the beer gardens set up at the periphery of the park. In addition to an eclectic selection of foods, vendors will attend to sell their artistic wares and Celtic swag, making this a wonderful spot to get souvenirs of the festival. Find us at www.almonteceltfest.com or on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages. – submitted by the organizers of Almonte Celtfest
