Frostavallen Artist Recidency

Fifth year Ma-project 20 weeks Höör, Sweden Public, exhibition, housing

Brief: Master Thesis project, map and research an area in mellanskåne and develop a project relevant to the findings. See Master thesis for research and more in-depth material. Based on mapping and research an artist residency is created where one as a visitor and artist have a good prospect of creating something within the unique character of mellanskåne. Inspiration has been found in local authors and poets but also very much from the area itself. Frostavallen has a rich and very interesting past as a popular ski-resort, one that is now somewhat forgotten and hidden under layers of rust and weeds. Through this project I hope to revitalise the area and possibly similar areas by highlighting its possibilities and history. The result is a place of dramatic character both in terms of its location and history but also in terms of its design.

Light and the landscape has played a central role throughout this project, but also the meeting between artist and spectator. The proximity to SkĂĽneleden has been taken advantage of by gathering its services by the foot of the new project. As a result of this, a place, where people with different interests and incentives meet, is created. From this

Artist residence The concrete foundation follows the landscape and as a result every unit has unique solutions to storage and spacial configuration. A sleeping loft creates a small hallway underneath with storage. The wide foundation creates seating nad base for desk and personal belongings.

Artist studios, below. The studios are placed in pairs to enable them to combine into a bigger one. Above the foundation that again follows the landscape, wood panel creates a volume facing north.

Axo, next page. The heavy solid volumes are covered by the lighter timber volumes. The volumes are angled in such a way that ideal light-conditions are present indoors. Apart from visiting the project for the exhibition or courses etc it can also be visited as a detour from SkĂĽneleden since the path reconnects to the trail further down on the north slope. The lookout spot and shelters makes it a possible destination for hikers and people taking a field-day.

Opposite page. The area in front of the workshop acts as the intersection between skåneleden, its shelters and this project. The workshop can extend out into it or it can be used for outdoor theatre and play in general with shelters and their fireplaces by its side.

Above. The stairway to the lookout spot can be reached by making ones way through the studios. From up here you see far into mellanskåne in all directions. Below. A view from the opposing old ski-slope with skåneleden separating them.

ESS Visitor Centre

Fifth year 2 weeks Lund, Sweden Public, Exhibition

Brief: Design a visitor centre for European Spallation Source ESS. The project must include kitchen with accompanying seating, closed meeting rooms, exhibition space, blackbox and needed services. Tower must be accessible. No additional built footprints allowed. Religion and science has throughout history always had a complicated relation. The idea is to find a common ground for them to co-exist. Both science and religion deals with truth, and truth cannot contradict itself. This intersection and perhaps contradiction becomes the driving force in this project.

Up until the 19th century natural philosophy was the common way to study nature. It was an attempt to achieve a speculative unity of nature and spirit. Without going into the conflicts and in many ways outdated view on science with a modern perspective, this willingness to combine faith/religion and science/nature could still be relevant.

Erosion of Magasin 405

Fourth year 3 weeks, group Helsingborg, Sweden Europan 15 Rron Bexheti, Nicholas Hartman, Jenny Lee

Brief: Transform the old harbour warehouse and the crane to a productive new meeting place that bridges North with South and complements the city as a whole. The proposal components are to: 1. Utilise Magasin 405 and re-design the building for new, proposed content. 2. Utilise the crane and re-design it for new, proposed content. 3. Add housing units within the project site. 4. Provide parking solutions for residents and businesses within the project site. Visuals not done by me stated next to them. The magasin and crane are remnants from a different era when the harbour of Helsingborg was a busy and flourishing area. Today they are left to rust and decay. We choose to look to the sea and invite it into the area with a concept of land erosion.

Erosion. The ground level of the magasin sits 1,5m below the new minimum height above sea-level. Instead of opposing the sea we choose to invite it and collaborate with it. As the sea level rises and falls new configurations of space are revealed and hidden from public access. This brings the seafront back to the public with ever-changing scenarios

There is a time and place for Spontaneity

Third year Ba-project 10 weeks Ahmedabad, India Public space

Brief: Design a public space on one out of 5 sites visited in India. Base program on previous mapping carried out in Ahmedabad, see project “Gates as Social gathering Space below. Meeting places in Ahmedabad are very scarce and often restricted for a certain religion, gender or class. This project strives to create a place where a wider audience is welcome. The program consists of a library with media-tech facilities and a sports court striving to mix people with different interests in a place where both of it can take place.

Shading. By extending or adding a secondary facade, blocking the sun.

Ventilation. Small openings opposing the bigger ones allows easy cross ventilation.

As a bypasser I experienced India sort of like a common confusion. But I learned to appreciate it and begun to see it as a spontaneity rarely seen. So this project is to be seen as a celebration of spontaneity and the locals’ concept of meeting up and take things from there.

Gates as Social Gathering Space

Third year 3 weeks Ahmedabad, India Mapping

Brief: Choose a theme, within architectural frames, of mapping after initial site visits, spend 3 weeks on site investigating, mapping, discussing with locals etc. Illustrate your findings for later use in next project (above). An investigation of the gates in this Muslim pol and how they act as more than just entrances into the community. The three different gates leading into the pol all has their own characteristics, being it more official or hard to find, but they all in some way act as a gathering space for people, not just from within the pol, but also from the outside. They form natural meeting spaces and the shade offered by two of them attracts people looking for a place to rest in the heat during the day. Being in a Muslim pol it is almost solely used as a gathering space by men.

Typical Users

Commercial

Casual

Private

This area is used by small shops and kiosks, it naturally acts as a small meeting place, however it is dependent on the shops and kiosks being open.

This area is purely casual in its nature, here people from both inside the pol and outside meet relaxing under the shaded gate area.

This area is almost explicitly used by the inhabitants of this pol for more personal conversations, however people from the outside may hang out here if they have a close friend from within.

1. Considered the main gate, mostly commercial traffic during daytime with deliveries. Houses two small shops which adds to the flow of people. After lunch it slowly transitions into a more casual gate. This transition is going on until the shops closes, then the gate acts solemnly as a gathering space.

2. Although the most official looking gate of the three this one is barely used commercially. It is offset from the street with space in front of the gate, creating a soft transition into the pol, also enables free passage of the traffic.

3. Squeezed in between two high buildings being very anonymous, even hard to find if not observant. Usually no commercial use, sometimes hosts a lady selling spicy potatoes from her cart. Almost like suddenly being in a private area when entering.

Reflection on Indian Pol typology

Third year 3 weeks Ahmedabad, India Housing

Brief: choose from three housing-typologies where 30% sq/m must be allocated to commercial activities. Specified site within a small pol (community). Fixed dimensions of walls and floors, with a maximum 30 % openings on the long sides. In groups of 8 develop a dwelling-pol and then individually develop each unit. Inhabitants: elderly couple, young couple with child and another couple. The project, a plant shop, was allocated a site between two tall buildings and a wall, overlooking the local gathering square. I decided to cooperate with the wall in order to not create a dead blind alley. Keeping a visual connection from the southern alley to the common square establishes a relation between the two, but still keeps a sense of protection from outside, to the pol, which the inhabitants share.

The ground level are allocated to the plant shop, keeping an area of untouched soil in the back underneath the open shaft and differentiating the levels establishes a notion of openness instead of the blind alley. The Indian notion of an “Otla is clearly maintained by the plinth’s different levels, inviting the public and marking different kinds of privacy. An Otla is used as an entrance space and a transitional zone, it is both a solution to connecting the housing to the street but it is also full of social meanings symbolizing welcome, auspiciousness and status.

Second level. A common kitchen for all of the inhabitants of the house with visual connections to the square, the neighbour straight across and the alley in the south. Behind the kitchen the bedroom for the elderly couple is located with a close relation to the shaft providing both greenery and light. The outer circulation has space for temporary seating and meetings.

Third level. Leading on upwards by the stairs a small balcony overlooks the whole pol. Continuing inwards the level is divided into two small units with onsuite rest-rooms. Where, as in all of the building, the sink can be transformed into a shower. Between the two units sliding doors enables the units to extend outwards.

Circulation

Section-diagram, the housing-parts of the project can be seen as floating above the first floor, anchored to the two long outer-walls, creating a floating box hanging between the two adjacent tall buildings. In the shaft a duality is created where the greenery reaches upwards into the light and the light shines downwards into both the levels above but mainly the plant shop on the ground floor.

Private

Common

Open

Process models. Focusing on the gradient between public and private the entrance otla was always a key character of the project. This together with a semi transparent front facade invites people in from the street while maintaining a sense of privacy for the dwellers above.

References Light-shaft area, illuminating the plant shop from within. Open to the elements, rain will find its way down to the small open courtyard on the ground level. Making it possible to keep plants within the untouched area of the footprint.

By helping the plants make their way up along the wall the ground floor can take advantage of the softer properties of the plants, resulting in a more pleasant atmosphere to the otherwise harsh wall.

Bölesholmarn Bath house

First year 6 weeks Umeå, Sweden Public

Brief: “From the ancient times to nowadays, bathing has played a main role in human social life.” Develop a public bathhouse on Bölesholmarna Island in Umeälven. Consider the sensorial experience of bathing, in which views, texture, temperature, colour, smell, sound and taste would take place. Requirements, ~250m2 surface area, at least 3 functions, minimum 50% of the surface must be usable all year around. The Island itself is a local hotspot for jogging, walking and exercising with a track running along the shoreline. I based my program approach on the theory of Contrast Hydrotherapy, where you immerse yourself in hot/cold water to stimulate muscle recovery and rehabilitation.

Section A. A simple repeated shape, abstracted from a traditional barnshape, placed after each other with different heights creates a setting much like the forest itself that surrounds the bathhouse.

Walking along the path leading up to the bathhouse one is surrounded by dense forest that also surrounds the building. Although dense, there is always glimpses of the river and opposing waterfront through the trees, and this visual connection is kept when approaching the project.

Previous page. Ground level plan. Large beams create a sheltered and protected space with big glass-partitions placing you in a universe of itself, observing the surroundings. Basic but spacious pools and saunas offer the visitors the very essence of contrast water therapy. The inserted boxes, inspired by old cottages and boathouses, containing changing rooms, saunas and administration space, create an enclosed inner area where the lounge-area and pools are placed, much like the inner yards of old farms and small villages. Section B. Changing rooms and saunas, enclosed within the wooden boxes, acts like condensations within the forest, obscuring and framing the views.

Circulation. Entering the bathhouse one is able to see straight through the building, without being able to go straight to the poolarea. This translucency along with the beams and two small courtyards creates a scenery much like one you’d come upon in the forest.

Entrance view. The untouched footprints within the project allows the forest to make its way into the artificial forest of beams, blurring the borders between the bath house and the forest.

I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life. - Fitzgerald F. Scott

Portraits of the City

Personal project Photography, theory Sweden

A portrait interpretation of our built environment, how do the city relate to us? Through portraits and street photography from vastly different places I seek a relation between the two, a common imagery, or metaphorical language, an idiom in a way. In retrospect the portraits lends the built environment its personality, it allows us to relate to the city. But the portraits are created from the street photos, the built environment has given the portraits the expression that they in hindsight seems to project on the environment.
