by Sam Sciolla braced the chance to absorb world culture. “It has been a wonderful experience to see children and families wanting this exposure, and I think there really is a hunger for it,” Pfeiffer said. Last year the camp was held at Escondido Elementary School in Palo Alto, where Pfeiffer was joined by three core staff members in leading youth ranging in ages from about 8 to 13 in art projects, cooking activities, reading and journal writing, role-playing games and more. Each week focused on a different time and region, beginning in China during the Han dynasty, then moving west through India, Persia and Anatolia, and concluding in Europe in the Renaissance. The camp’s curriculum focuses on what Pfeiffer called “history of a lowercase ‘h’” — the daily lives and culture of each region rather than military campaigns and governmental changes. For example, children try their hand at making Armenian string cheese, look at the invention of paper in China and grapple with the the concept of karma during a

uch has been said of late about exposing youth early and often to science and engineering. But what about world cultures? With a globe ever more connected by technology and economics, isn’t it also important to introduce children to cultures different from the one in which they were raised? Local camp leaders think so. While they may not be in the most visible of camp categories, nearby programs like Camp Marco Polo, Camp Jano India and the German American School of Palo Alto’s Summer School Camp, to name a few, present rich opportunities for cultural exploration, language acquisition, social interaction and, of course, fun. Camp Marco Polo — a 10-week program in which campers metaphorically travel along the Silk Road — was launched by Palo Alto resident Sarah Pfeiffer last summer to provide children with a needed setting for authentic play, social-emotional learning and crosscultural exploration. She said she was delighted by how children and parents em-

week focused on India. On Fridays, campers are visited by guest artists who lead activities in shadow puppetry, dance and ethnic music, among other art forms. Fridays are also market day, when children engage in the commerce of the Silk Road by taking on various roles (a farmer, a soldier, an administrator, etc.) and trading with the goods they made during the week. “One aspect of the program that’s really important is this idea of trying on
different hats,” Pfeiffer said, explaining how campers learn to understand other perspectives through role-playing. Pfeiffer is looking forward to the second iteration of the camp (which will take place in Palo Alto, at a soon-to-be-determined location). Ruchita Parat, also a Palo Alto resident, is the founder of the U.S. Hindi Foundation, which offers a program called

In discussing the value of learning about world cultures, Parat remarked that the activity helps to build understanding across cultures. “It broadens their mind, and they will see similarities and differences, and they will be able to appreciate both,” she said. Dismayed by the absence of Indian history in local schools’ teachings, Parat started Camp Jano India in 2007 to both provide youth instruction in the Hindi language and convey the depth of Indian culture. Camp Jano India today offers a site at El Carmelo Elementary School in Palo Alto, where children ages 5 to 12 can enroll in several week-long sessions over the course of the summer. Mornings are typically spent practicing Hindi, while the afternoons present slideshows and activities in English that explore India’s important historical events, great leaders and thinkers, natural beauty, monuments, music, medicine, literature, dance, food and everyday life. The children particularly enjoy cooking opportunities, where they make dishes like the appetizer chaat and a sweet called laddoo. Though most campers have some Indian heritage, Parat emphasized that the camp is open to any child interested in speaking Hindi and learning about life in India. Perhaps even more than a visit to the country itself, the camp inspires an interest for children in India by combining

substantive teaching with play and social interaction with other like-minded kids, she said. “Our children love it because they develop a lot of camaraderie (and) friends when they come to the camp,” she said. The German-American School of Palo Alto’s Summer School Camp fills a similar role in sharing the German language and culture of German-speaking countries, serving as a place for both summertime fun and learning. Pamela Scholz, director of school management at the German-American School of Palo Alto (GASPA), said that while about three-fourths of campers have some prior connection to German, other
children simply want to take up another language or find out about the culture associated with a favorite band, soccer team or athlete. “Really, that’s happened, and we’re all for it,” Scholz said. Offered at the German-American International School site in Menlo Park, the program teaches German through full immersion, though Scholz stressed that no prior German language skills are required. Only one four-week session is offered each summer, allowing children to develop a rapport with camp staff and try out the full range of activities. Each day starts off with morning circles sorted by age groups to practice some Ger-
man language skills and talk about upcoming events, before progressing to a large gathering (typically marked by singing, dancing and games) and then project time. Campers can learn how to make bread and spaetzle, visit the juice bar (or “Saftladen”), play soccer, use the small on-site printing press, and send each other mail through an internal delivery service — among other projects that impart cultural knowledge and expand on German vocabulary. Though campers are split up by age (they range from ages 3 to 13) for certain portions of day, there are ample opportunities for younger and older children to help and learn from each other. Scholz also explained that learning another language allows people to truly immerse themselves in a new culture and, as Pfeiffer and Parat noted, that becoming acquainted with other peoples and regions facilitates respect and understanding. “It makes it easier to understand where other people are coming from ... and that there’s more than one of approaching something,” Scholz said.
