Celebration of the Arts

nce again the much anticipated Connoisseurs’ Marketplace will be showcasing the talents of more than 200 fine art and contemporary craft exhibitors as well as the NEW Culinary Arts Corner featuring demonstrations by ten talented Bay Area chefs. Presented by the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce, the 29th annual event will be held July 18-19 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. along beautiful Santa Cruz Avenue in downtown Menlo Park. “We are delighted to bring this unique celebration of the arts to the community. We hope you will enjoy the wonderful art, food and entertainment as well as all the terrific restaurants and retail businesses that make downtown Menlo Park such an inviting place to live and visit,” says Fran Dehn, President/CEO of the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce. Stroll tree-lined Santa Cruz Avenue while enjoying the vast array of fine art from all around the country: from shimmering glassware as it sparkles in the sunlight to unique jewelry as it captures the light; masterfully crafted paintings in lush oils, delicate watercolors and bold acrylics; ceramics both functional and decorative and photography images that captures moments in time. These are only a few of the many mediums you will enjoy in addition to the specialty foods at Gourmet Island, where food purveyors will entice you with some tasty bites both sweet and savory to sample and purchase to share with your family and friends. Stop by the Culinary Arts Corner on Chestnut

and view some fabulous cooking demonstrations throughout the weekend. A special thank you to Edible Silicon Valley Magazine for sponsoring many of the chefs demonstrations and to Kitchens by Meyer for providing the appliances. These gifted chefs will entertain and offer some creative tips to the inner “foodie” in all of us. A feast for the eyes will certainly awaken the senses so be sure to enjoy some of the great food throughout the festival paired with a nice wine or refreshing microbrew to quench your thirst. Enjoy the exciting glassblowing demonstrations from 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday located at Johnson. Then relax with friends and neighbors while enjoying a variety of music on stage at Fremont Park with some soothing jazz with the Doug Miller and Mike Keating Quintet or for a more high energy pace you won’t want to miss Singing Wood’s marimba music. Don’t forget to bring the kids to the NEW Kids’ Creative Center presented by Sungevity where the City of Menlo Park Community Services representatives will offer free art activities all weekend. These young art connoisseurs will leave with their own handcrafted memento. Enjoy the art, food and music at this fun-filled art experience when visiting this popular event. Admission and parking are free. Public transit information: www.511.org. For more information please call 650-325-2818 or visit www.menloparkchamber.com. 2015 • Connoisseurs’ Marketplace • 3

Powerfully playful

J

ames Moore’s remarkable art career began more than 30 years ago when he contemplated a life changing career from a commercial banker and competitive bodybuilder. Moore a Bay Area artist uses a simple geometric concept, the cube, when constructing his artwork in stainless steel. The shapes are usually abstractions of the human figure and when applying the rules of figurative proportions and balance each piece evokes a specific movement and gesture. “In spite of the obvious solidity and strength of my metal sculpture, it somehow captures and expresses something more ephemeral, more human. It’s the contrast of a solid structure and fluid gesture that I believe makes my work interesting and compelling. My work has been described many ways but “powerfully playful” may be the best I’ve heard yet. Above all, I want to add something positive to the world by sharing my optimistic view of what it means to be human,” states Moore. For more information visit: www.jamesmooresculpture.com.

C

laudia Abderhalden is a contemporary jewelry designer who resides in Santa Barbara. Her work is primarily in sterling silver incorporating enamel, gold, copper, gemstones and other up-cycled/repurposed materials. Whether it’s earrings, necklaces, bracelets or rings her sense of composition exhibits an edgy sophistication with clean, geometric shapes. Inspiration of these textures and patterns are often inspired through architectural expressions that appeals to lifestyle trend-setters. “I’ve incorporated wool felt in the past and more recently I’ve been working on a collection with up-cycled bicycle tubing, packaging plastics, music record vinyl into some pieces of jewelry. My goal is to create minimal yet interesting pieces for everyday and special occasions,” says Abderhalden. Abderhalden’s career in jewelry design began over ten years ago leaving behind a career as a social worker which started in Switzerland and continued in California. A man of his word

I

n fact, Richard Curtner is well known for his many words and his attention to detail as he skillfully arranges these words and colors from magazine clippings of written text into expressive collage portraits and landscapes.

As a self-taught artist he’s been fascinated by art in many forms, “I also had a love for the literary arts, (poetry, short stories, etc.) and I was seeking for a way to incorporate both into one single art form. Thus, I created the self-developed new art medium - “textual collage” (or word collage),” says Curtner. The creative process begins with sketching out the design and then searching for the right words, phrases and colors which are carefully glued into place for each subject and theme and then varnished. A work of art he’s perfected over the last 13 years. While every picture tells a story, here you can always read a lot more into it – literally.

A taste of Napa

A

s if the beauty, tranquility, and award-winning wines weren’t enough to draw you out to the Napa Valley country, you can add this award-winning plein air painter to the list - Marta Collings. Collings has lived in Napa Valley, with the scenic and picturesque settings for the past 29 years so it’s

no wonder why she has such an appreciation of the landscape which she has so fittingly captured with her subtle nuances of color from the soothing blue sky touched by whimsical clouds to the riches of the earth and its vine laden fruit. Plein air is a style of painting done in the open air or outdoors. Collings describes her technique as “wet on wet” which allows her to layer colors creating a translucent like quality. Her exciting watercolors are given a richer depth by contrasting values of light against dark through glazes and by her saturation of paints. These subtleties in plein air painting offer a unique sense of place and moment.
