‘Camelot’ theme for Woodside’s Day of the Horse More than 300 riders are expected to dress in Arthurian costumes for this year’s Day of the Horse, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13, in Woodside. Now in its eighth year, Day of the Horse will have two components: a trail ride and a horse fair. The trail ride attracts riders who will walk the town trails dressed in “Camelot” costume. The horse fair, located near Woodside Town Hall, is expected to draw more than 1,500 people to its free equestrian activities, which include pony rides, demonstrations, and rides on the Wells Fargo Stagecoach. There will be food booths and live music. Day of the Horse is sponsored by the Woodside-area Horse Owners Association. The association says more than $85,000 raised by the event has been gifted to Woodside-area programs, including the Folger Stable Renovation in Wunderlich County Park, trail development and maintenance in town, county parks, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, regional equestrian activities for children, and large animal rescue. Tally Ho presents Monte Carlo fundraiser By Jane Knoerle Almanac Lifestyles Editor

In its 62 years, Tally Ho, the annual benefit for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, has taken place at several different times and places. This year, “Tally Ho Presents Monte Carlo” is slated for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the University Club of Palo Alto. The gala features casino games and wine tastings, along with silent and live auctions. The evening also includes dinner and dancing with music provided by “Simply Jazz.” This year’s Tally Ho director is Louise Rockhold of Menlo Park. Her committee includes Louise DeDera, Mary Vavuris,

Bill and Diane Bottoms, Barb Carson, Susan Lamkin, Laurel Trask and Spike O’Connor, Anna Henderson, Kim Asborno, Alicia Seebold. Elaine Scotten, Sally Knorp, Susan Fetterly, Sara Jamison, and Marion Goodkind. The Allied Arts Auxiliary now includes 16 men as associate members (mostly husbands of members), who will preside over the casino tables. Member Spike O’Connor is also leader of the “Simply Jazz” orchestra. Auction items will include a “Batter Up” package with game tickets and a bat signed by Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants, a five-course tasting for eight guests at the Blue Garden Cafe at Allied Arts, and a weekend stay in the Beatles Suite at

the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Palo Alto. Tally Ho has been produced continuously since 1950 and for years took place early in September at the Menlo Circus Club. It included a dazzling series of events: daytime and evening horse shows, children’s all-day entertainment, a fashion show, dinner and dancing. Over the years, that imposing agenda was pared down, no more horse shows, children’s fairs or fashion shows, but the Allied Arts Guild Auxiliary’s dedication to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford remains. This year’s event raises funds for the hospital to help support uncompensated medical care. It will also focus on purchasing

Former city manager dies at 88 A memorial service was held Sept. 30 for John R. Johnson, who ran the Palo Alto Medical Foundation for more than two decades and served as city manager of Menlo Park during the boom years of the early 1960s. He died Sept. 17 at The Sequoias in Portola Valley, where he resided and where the service was held. He was 88. A nationally respected healthcare administrator, Mr. Johnson was an active community volunteer and dedicated Stanford alumnus. He was devoted to his family, especially to his wife, Phyllis, to whom he was married for 66 years until her death last year, the family said. He loved to travel, play tennis and dominoes, and spend time with his granddaughters. Mr. Johnson was born in Greeley, Colorado, on Oct. 20, 1923, the son of the Rev. Rector and Elsie Bales Johnson. As the son of a Methodist minister, he moved frequently as a child, from Colorado to Arizona and eventually to San Jose, California, when he was in high school. He met his future wife, Phyllis Hackman, at the First United Methodist Church youth group.

After graduating from San Jose High School in 1941, Mr. Johnson entered Stanford University, where he majored in political science. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, he joined the U.S. Navy and was sent to officer training school. In 1944 he was commissioned as an ensign, was married in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and headed for Guam, where he served on a minesweeper, the USS Oracle. After the war, he returned to Stanford and received a bachelor’s de g re e i n John Johnson political science in 1946. In 1947 he received a fellowship in public affairs from the Coro Foundation in San Francisco. From 1952 to 1964, he worked for the city of Menlo Park as assistant city manager and then as city manager. Menlo Park was in the midst of the post-war boom, and during his management tenure, the city expanded its boundaries and built a new library and police station. In 1964, Mr. Johnson went to

work for the Palo Alto Medical Clinic as executive administrator. Over the next 23 years, as doctors transitioned from house calls to managed care, he presided over the clinic’s growth into the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. In 1987 he became vice president of administration for the foundation. He retired in 1991 but continued to serve on the board of directors for several years. He also served as president of the Medical Group Management Association and the American Association of Ambulatory Health Care, and was a fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives. Mr. Johnson was a fervent Stanford booster and a generous community volunteer, the family said. He served as president of the Stanford Alumni Association, as a member of the “chain gang at Stanford football games, and as a docent in the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He served for 32 years on the board of directors of Channing House and received a the Lifetime of Achievement award Continued on next page

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
