Menlo School supporters mingle in the lobby of the new Creative Arts and Design Center surrounded by student artwork.

The opening of the Creative Arts and Design Center “demonstrates Menlo’s passion for all aspects of education and Menlo’s recognition of the importance of the arts,” said Susan Ford Dorsey, chair of Menlo School’s Board of Trustees.

enlo School in Atherton has opened a 40,000-square-foot Creative Arts and Design Center for the teaching of art, music, drama, photography and movie-making. The two-story center, which opened Aug. 24, has 14 teaching spaces for the creative arts, said school spokesperson Jill Kasser. These activities were formerly housed in the oldest buildings on the campus of this private, college preparatory school founded in 1915. The areas of the new center where students circulate are designed to showcase student work in the visual and performing arts, she said. On the ground floor

is a central gallery, plus a studio and a ceramics classroom. The building has three vaulted ceiling music rooms designed for acoustics, with practice rooms and a vocal teaching studio. On the second floor is a drama room, a digital design center, a yearbook/journalism room, a recording studio, faculty office space, a conference room, and a photography studio, plus a classroom and darkroom complex. The full basement has space for set storage, mechanical systems, and a computer server room, she said. Outdoors, there is a studio and teaching patio. The opening of the center, she said,

was also a time to celebrate the school’s surpassing its $55 million capitalcampaign goal and the funding of the Athletic Center (opened two years ago) as well as the Creative Arts and Design Center. The capital campaign also funded infrastructure improvements and added to the school’s endowment. “The opening of the CADC demonstrates Menlo’s passion for all aspects of education and Menlo’s recognition of the importance of the arts,” said Susan Ford Dorsey, chair of Menlo School’s Board of Trustees. “We are thankful to our many generous donors for making it possible.” A

he clock is ticking for a fundraising drive to benefit the nonprofit Menlowe Ballet, launched last year and now preparing for its third major local performance, set for Oct. 5 through 7. Based at the Menlo Park Academy of Dance studios, the dance troupe is aiming to raise $20,000 to cover the production costs for a new work on the program. “Surfside,” created by artistic director Michael Lowe, is an homage to vintage surf music, and includes live music performed by Paul Stinson and John Baker. So far, the fundraising effort to pay for the production has drawn a healthy response from the community — but there’s a hitch. Organized through the online project “Kickstarter,” the fundraising campaign is limited in duration, and must reach its $20,000 goal by Wednesday, Sept. 12, according to Lisa Shiveley of Atherton, Menlowe Ballet’s executive director. If the effort fails — it’s several thousand dollars away at this point — none of the money already pledged will be collected, and the ballet company is left empty-handed. As of Thursday afternoon (Sept. 6), the campaign had raised about $14,500, and “we’d be crushed to lose that,” Ms. Shiveley said. In a video created for the

Sharon Kung, left, and Ikolo Griffin rehearse the ballet, “Chuntian,” at the Menlo Park Academy of Dance as they prepare for Menlowe Ballet’s debut performance in 2011.

Kickstarter fundraiser, Ms. Shiveley notes that all money raised during the campaign will go toward costs for the dancers, new costumes that are being created for “Surfside,” and other production costs associated with bringing the new work to the stage.

“The executive staff is not paid at this point, so none of your money is going to pay for anything but direct costs” of producing “Surfside,” she said. Go to tinyurl.com/Ballet919 to see the video and to donate. A

Kids 4 Sports run benefits local youth teams The Kids 4 Sports Foundation will hold its third annual 5K run at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Burgess Park in Menlo Park. Online registration for the Fall Dash is available on active.com at $30 for adults, $20 for kids 18 and under. The Fall Dash two-loop course will take runners and walkers from Burgess Park and on to streets through local neighborhoods. “We designed a flat fast course in a location that would be easily accessible to kids and adults from all sides of Menlo Park,” says Kids 4 Sports cofounder Sally Osterberg. The event is a fundraiser to benefit youth team sports in local communities, including east Menlo Park and East Palo Alto.

This summer the foundation helped send an East Palo Alto basketball team to a regional tournament. The foundation also donated $7,000 to help pay for new helmets and registration fees for scholarship kids in the Menlo-Atherton Pop Warner football league.

‘Victorian Days at Old Courthouse’ “Gossip Behind the Gates,” a skit about an imaginary garden party at the Borel estate in San Mateo in the 1890s, will be presented twice during “Victorian Days in the Old Courthouse” to be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the San

Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City. The skit, to be offered at 12:30 and again at 3 p.m. in Courtroom A, is a Victorian chat about how high-society neighbors got rich and built their lavish mansions. The Peninsula was once a rural showpiece for California’s elite, looking to exhibit their wealth through their great estates, says history museum spokesman Mitch Postel. Other features during Victorian Days include crafts for children and one-day displays set up by the many historical societies of the Peninsula. Admission on Sept. 23 will be free. Go to historysmc.org or call 2990104 for more information. The history museum is located at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City. September 12, 2012 N TheAlmanacOnline.com N The Almanac N 27

This the first celebrity chef and winemakers benefit for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Fund for the Animals, in support of research programs and ocean life exhibits that inspire a future with healthy oceans. Allied Arts Guild was selected for its “garden oasis setting, as well as its convenience for Silicon Valley patrons, who might not care to travel to Monterey for a fundraiser. Enchanting Farmhouse on 3 Prime Acres S DAY 5 N I SOLD

330 ALBION AVENUE, WOODSIDE In the heart of central Woodside, in a prestigious enclave among some of the town’s finest estates, you will discover this rare offering of enchanting character and possibility. Here on approximately 3 prime acres, this property transports you to the rich heritage of a turn-ofthe-century Woodside farm - a place that conjures up the grandeur of a sprawling plantation. Mature palm and oak trees ornament the grounds, shading carefree moments at this uncommon paradise. The 3 bedroom circa-1905 farmhouse, complete with charming veranda and 10-foot ceilings, stands as a testament of a bygone era. Once the hub of an expansive farm, the house is a reminder of the land’s bucolic tradition, which is still preserved on these choice acres. The main home has been extensively restored. It enjoys a delightful country kitchen, formal living and dining rooms, family room and upstairs master suite. Sheltered by a collection of trees, the expanses also inspire a possible pool site, equestrian facilities, vineyard or new luxury home. This special place expresses something timeless, a harmony of history and possibility that is best experienced first-hand. Price upon request.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. We do not believe that any person is exposed to these chemicals at levels constituting a health or safety risk. However, we have not made a formal determination that actual exposure levels are below the Proposition 65 "no significant risk" levels for carcinogens or "no observable effect" levels for chemicals known to cause reproductive harm, and we have not performed a risk analysis to determine the precise amount of exposure that any individual would receive over a 70 year period. Proposition 65 therefore obligates us to provide this warning to potentially effected individuals.
