Student designs mural at Belle Haven School By Soo Song Special to the Almanac

B

elle Haven School will have a bright new addition to its campus this fall, thanks to Menlo-Atherton High School student Jeremy Chow. Jeremy, an incoming senior and five-year Boy Scout, designed and painted, with the help of family and friends, a mural on an exterior wall at the school. Aimed at inspiring students to attain the qualities of leaders, the mural is about 30 feet wide and nearly 8 feet tall. Planning for the work, part of Jeremy’s Eagle Scout project, started in March. The design team used tape and cut-outs of letters and people (including pictures from the Internet projected onto butcher paper), and then rolled paint over the cutouts. Then, they removed the cut-outs and painted in the details. He unveiled the mural on July 25 at the school site’s Boys

& Girls Clubs of the Peninsula summer showcase. “The top (of the mural) lists eight words that are supposed to symbolize leadership and what leaders represent,” he said at the unveiling, pointing to words on the wall that included “effort, responsibility, and creativity.” “A leader respects all the people around him,” he said as he passed the word “respect.” The mural includes other elements such as soccer — the kids’ favorite sport — and college gear. The planning process for the mural was extensive. “I first met with Maria Ibarra, the former principal of the school, who gave me the general format Photo by Soo Song she wanted,” he said. “I also Menlo-Atherton High student Jeremy Chow shows his new mural at Belle Haven School in Menlo Park. worked with Boys & Girls Club site director Liz Calderon and Community School Director He spent about 47 hours site director, expressed the and honored for him to come,” Alejandro Vilchez to develop planning and painting the excitement and gratitude the she said. “I can’t believe he’d the design and implement the mural, and volunteers contrib- school and community feels take the time to bring someidea of ‘College-Bound’ into uted another 140 hours. toward the work. thing so beautiful to the the mural.” Jackie Garcia, the assistant “(We) were really thrilled school.” A

Menlo Park native aims to cut home-automation cost By Elena Kadvany Special to the Almanac

magine an inexpensive device that allows you to set an alarm on your smart phone that will automatically turn on your coffee pot in the morning, or turn off the lights when you leave the house to save energy. That device may become a reality with the launch of a company named brightblu, founded by Menlo Park native Taylor Umphreys, and based on the idea of affordable, customizable home automation. “We wanted to bring home automation to the greater market,” Mr. Umphreys explains. “So we decided to make a really cheap, affordable smart plug that you can plug into any device — a lamp, appliance, TV, whatever it may be — and give you control of that device through your smartphone.” Mr. Umphreys, 21, born and raised in Menlo Park, traces his interest in the world of electrical

engineering back to high school. In his junior year at Menlo School he took applied science and engineering classes — a program unique to Menlo — and was hooked. “I knew instantly then I wanted to go into engineering,” he says. With that pursuit in mind, after graduating high school in 2008, Mr. Umphreys went to the University of California Santa Barbara to study electrical engineering. There, he performed undergraduate research and worked on various projects, one of which involved designing, building and testing solar powered reading lights to send to children and families in Ghana. But it was Mr. Umphreys’ senior project, a year-long collaborative effort with three other UCSB electrical engineering students who are now part of the brightblu team — Siddhant Bhargava, Ben Chang and Arshad Haider — that planted

Competition, in which 46 teams of undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students design and submit ideas for business plans. Last December, Mr. Umphreys approached the tech startup accelerator Plug and Play Tech

Center to get the company up and running. Now, brightblu is participating in Plug and Play’s 10-week accelerator program, designed to immerse new busiContinued on next page

Menlo church wins recycling award St. Bedes Episcopal Church in Menlo Park won a BizSMART@ Work Award this year for exemplary recycling and composting practices. The award “recognizes businesses and multi-family complexes in the RethinkWaste service area (San Mateo County) for their recycling and composting efforts,” said Monica Devincenzi, recycling outreach manager at RethinkWaste, in an email. After the church hosted a speaker from Recology, the trash-collection company, church members decided to compost “aggressively” and increase recycling, said Jeanne Cooper, the youth and young adult coordinator. Then Carol Shedlock, the parish adminis-

trator, truly implemented the church’s green program, according to Ms. Cooper. Because the church serves as a school during the week, hosts many regular AA meetings, and holds two daily services as well as a variety of other evening events, many meals a day are eaten and papers used on its grounds. It therefore had the opportunity to “divert an enormous amount of material,” helping it win the award and make its goal, said Ms. Cooper. The church has set a goal to buy only compostable napkins and coffee cups, etc., and cut down on usage. Ms. Cooper says she promotes “finger foods” and other snacks that do not involve unnecessary waste. — Allison Silverman

Summer offers new experiences By Alexandra Van Ligten Special to the Almanac

W

hile many local youth use the summer break as an opportunity to catch up on sleep and watch endless hours of television, Rebecca Shoch, 14, of Woodside chose to use her new free time for something other than sitting on the couch. Being a big fan of Emily Joubert, a store in Woodside that sells home and garden products, she decided to take a chance on an available internship there that piqued her interest. The application process involved talking to the manager about her interests so her potential employer could get “a taste of her personality.” She landed the job, which includes helping with gift-

wrapping, putting together flower arrangements, and organizing the shelves. The internship has given her a sense what it’s like to be in a workplace environment. The most useful skill she Woodside’s has picked up Rebecca is the ability Shoch to communicate with different types of people, she says. In addition to work at Emily Joubert, Rebecca’s summer activities include attending local dance and tennis camps. The highlight of her summer, however, will be a family trip

to England and Ireland. Rebecca says it’s important for young people to travel to “get a taste of what other cultures are like and gain new insights and ideas.” She looks forward to London, where she plans to take a tour of the recently opened Harry Potter Studios and attend the Olympics. “The Olympics are so amazing because everyone in the world is coming together on an international level for a common reason,” she says. In Ireland, she plans to relax and enjoy views of some of the most gorgeous landscapes in the world. Here’s wishing Rebecca and all other Almanac readers a wonderful summer. Trinity students present community service awards By Allison Silverman Specialto the Almanac

ifth-grade students with Trinity Elementary School in Menlo Park recently presented a “Heart of Trinity Award” and $100 to each of five community service organizations. As graduating fifth-graders, the students split into five groups. Each group agreed on an organization to support, often based on the students ‘ volunteer experience. Trinity students participate in community service projects throughout their time at the school, from working at homeless shelters to helping animals, according to school spokesperson Cindy Tipton. Organizations chosen by this year’s class were: Save the Bay, Habitat for Humanity, East Palo Alto YMCA, World Wildlife Fund, and Invisible Children. This “program gives them (the students) a tangible way to provide help,” says fifth-grade teacher Kathy Hoekenga. A

sometimes think about how sad it is that most of our pet dogs, bred for generations to do specific work — hunting, herding, guarding, rodent-killing — do not have jobs. It is probably my intelligent, hyper-active, keen-nosed Labrador retriever who makes me think this. He BARBARA comes from a WOOD breeder whose dogs are hunters and rescue dogs. Their website shows a beautiful lab harnessed to a climber’s belay rope. Alas, poor Wheeler (so named because his color is exactly the same as that of my favorite Wheeler Farms compost) has no job. Instead, he devotes his brains and muscles and nose and fierce determination to a rubber ball that he carries with him on his daily four-mile walks. and passers-by that they must throw the ball. During the day Wheeler usually hangs out near our gate, which has a gap near the ground that one of the dozens of tennis balls that have somehow ended up in our yard will just fit under. When someone passes by, especially those who have learned his routine, he rolls the ball under the gate and waits for them to throw it back over the fence. I have noticed quite a few people slipping him dog treats through the wire gate. In the evenings, when Wheeler’s favorite spot is curled up on the ottoman in front of my chair with head nudging ever closer to my lap, everyone takes great pleasure in trying to hide his ball from him. He always finds it. The number of people who give in to the non-verbal pleas to throw the ball in the house are apparent in the fact that there is, at this moment, more than one round ball mark on the window that needs to be washed off.

During the night a terrible fuss was heard, followed by barking. This morning, the old black hen appeared at the back door, with a large handful of feathers gone from her back. Wheeler, it seems, responded to the fuss she raised when the raccoon, or whatever predator it was, grabbed her. He chased it off.
