Now it’s Menlo Hub New name, look for former Oak City Bar & Grill By Jane Knoerle Almanac Lifestyles Editor

A

hub is defined as a center of activity, and that’s what proprietor Mehmet Erkus intends his newly branded Menlo Hub to be. The name was chosen in a contest that had 200 entries. Even Mr. Erkus was surprised by the enthusiastic response. Formerly known as the Oak City Bar & Grill, the Menlo Hub, located at 1029 El Camino Real in Menlo Park, sports a new look, a lively bar scene, live music three nights a week, and menus in the process of a makeover. The oak tree mural and pastel walls are gone, replaced by vivid blocks of blue and orange — colors Mr. Erkus says remind him of his native Turkey. Walls are hung with large vibrant paintings by a local artist, and there are big screens for watching sports at the long

bar. There’s even a small dance floor. A private dining room at the rear of the building has been remodeled. Booths opposite the bar have been replaced with communal tables, ideal for noshing with drinks. The Hub features “California cuisine with a Mediterranean flair,” according to its website. The menu is being updated to include new dining choices, as well as an expanded menu of bar food. The Hub is now serving dinner, and plans to resume serving lunch soon. An “early bird” dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. With its makeover, The Hub hopes to attract a clientele looking for a more informal dining experience, with live music in a town not exactly known for its night life. For information or reservations, call 321-6882. A

Why Portola Valley budget grew 19 percent Su Hong’s owner says it’s By Dave Boyce Almanac Staff Writer

S

ignificant increases in revenues and spending are everywhere in the Portola Valley town budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1, but there are plausible explanations for them all. The budget shows projected revenues to the general fund of $4,588,589 and expenses of $4,584,201. The figures represent 19 percent increases over the previous year and include a surplus of $4,388. The Town Council reviewed the budget on June 20 and will meet again on Wednesday, June 27, to hold a public hearing and vote on the budget. Projected changes for 2012-13 include: ■ An $85,000 line item for the Blues & Barbecue festival: $50,000 in revenues dedicated to the purchase of open space, and $35,000 to put on the festival. ■ A $20,000 contribution by Stanford University to maintain the Dwight Crowder Trail, which the university recently rerouted in connection with the stipulations in its operating

permit. This funding passes through for trail maintenance, including a pilot program to study invasive weed removal. ■ Contributions toward the $588,000 renovation of Ford (baseball) Field, including $232,000 in state grants, up to $100,000 from the Little League, a $100,000 matching grant from the Sand Hill Foundation, public generosity, and possibly $80,000 from the sale of 100,000 shares of stock given to the town in 2007. Revenues would pay for expenses, if the project goes ahead. ■ Some $137,000 from the state to repay a loan to the state of property tax revenues from Portola Valley (and all other cities, towns and special districts) to replenish education funding in 2009, provided that the loans be repaid with interest within three years. ■ A $65,000 increase in revenues generated by higher fees for Town Hall services such as building permits. The council expressed general satisfaction to Town Manager Nick Pegueros for the budget, though Councilwoman Ann

Wengert asked whether the Finance Committee had commented on a projected 17 percent increase in costs for employee health insurance premiums and a 9 percent increase in state retirement contributions. “These are catastrophically large when you look at them as an annual change,” Ms. Wengert said. The Finance Committee meets in late July and town staff should have recommendations for the council in August, Mr. Pegueros replied, adding: “I think there are some win/wins for the town and the employees.” Other notable expenses projected for the coming fiscal year include: ■ A budget of $4,200 for the new Bicycle, Pedestrian & Traffic Safety Committee. ■ A capital equipment budget of $67,500, which includes $29,000 for a new tractor to replace the current 32-year-old tractor, $30,000 for a portable emergency radio transmitter, and $8,500 for a microphone system for council and commission meetings in the Historic Schoolhouse. “If I want a Best Seller, I advertise in the Almanac and the Weekly.” – Lyn Jason Cobb As a Realtor serving Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Atherton, Portola Valley and Woodside, I do my utmost to provide extraordinary service to my clients. The Almanac and the Palo Alto Weekly is always where I advertise first because I like the home delivery, editorial focus, and it is a great value. I have always had great results promoting open homes in the Palo Alto Weekly and The Almanac, and I also run in special publications like Spring and Fall Real Estate, Neighborhoods and Info Menlo because of the great coverage and online presence. I am also a big believer in the Palo Alto Weekly’s Open Home Guide, which is by far the most accurate and comprehensive. I’ve had many buyers bring in the guide to my ‘Open Homes’ to see what I have listed.”

“The Almanac has been a trusted part of my Real Estate marketing strategy.” – Ed Kahl “It is an excellent way to get information out to people in my market sphere because it is an excellent newspaper. It carries area news and features that people in Woodside, Portola Valley and Atherton want to know about. When I list exceptional homes and estates, I want to get the word, and the pictures, out. The Almanac is a great way to do that.”

you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800280-2832 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-11-491211-AL . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagee's Attorney. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 415 8TH AVENUE , MENLO PARK, CA 94025 APN# 060-181-160 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The Beneficiary may elect to bid less than the full credit bid. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a cashier's check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site http:// www.priorityposting.com regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case T.S. No. 20120057. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
