So long to all that M-A gr ads set off for the future

here were requests to stand and to be seated. There were prepared remarks, and music sung by a choir. There were tears. At times, it was a solemn occasion, but only at times. Because there was also laughter and whoops of enthusiasm, and a moment at the end when hundreds of hats were thrown carelessly into the air. Yes, folks, it’s happened once again. Celebr ation Woodside High gr ads take flight

wo speeches graced the spring air on June 8 at the football field at Woodside High School. Friends and family of some 365 seniors gathered to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2012. In “The Morphing Process,” Elena Turkalj compared the caterpillar-tobutterfly transition to that of freshman to senior, observers said. Some minutes later, under the title “Wordside,” 20 valedictorians remembered utterances freighted with meaning: “SAT,” “major,” “career” and, last but not least, “We out,” or, less colloquially, “We’re going now. Thanks for the memories.” The senior gift to the school was a life-size bronze statue of a wildcat to be placed in the traffic circle in front of the administration building. “It will be very beautiful,” Principal David Reilly said in an email.

In his address, Mr. Reilly spoke of what teachers and staff know about teenagers. “We know teen spirit,” he said, “a spirit best illustrated by the bird in the egg. In order for the bird to hatch from the egg, it must kick through the walls of infancy.

enlo Park will take its annual step into summer on Wednesday, June 20, with the start of the cityís summer concert series and a block party on downtown Santa Cruz Avenue, which will be closed to traffic from El Camino Real to University Drive from around 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

will run from about 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Facebook will host a performance platform for dancers, musicians and martial artists, and a pie-eating contest with current and past civic leaders, according to organizer Brian Flegel. A “bark parade” will be held between north and south Crane Street, and all dogs are welcome to participate, Mr. Flegel said. “Just come and sign up before 5:45 p.m., or pick up

a signup form at any of the pet places around town,” he said. There will be live music up and down Santa Cruz Avenue and a food truck, Mama’s Empanadas. Restaurants will offer street and outside service and will stay open at least until the end of the event at 9 p.m., he said. This sixth annual block party is hosted by the Menlo

Fogarty winery celebrates summer solstice Thomas Fogarty Winery & Vineyards will celebrate the summer solstice from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, with vineyard hikes and chardonnay tasting at 19501 Skyline Blvd. in Woodside. Not normally accessible to the public, Thomas Fogarty Winery will be sending guests out into the vineyards, with vistas overlooking Stanford, the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley, to taste the chardonnay. Winemaker Michael Martella and associate winemaker Nathan Kandler will be in the vineyard during the tasting to discuss the wines. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking shoes. Riekes Center holds Olympic Day event The Riekes Center for Human Enhancement will celebrate Olympic Day with a multi-sport festival from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the center, 3455 Edison Way in North Fair Oaks. Free and open to the public, the event is meant to engage the local community and encourage Olympic ideals such as

health, fitness, perseverance and respect. Participants can play and learn about archery and table tennis, and such wheelchair sports as basketball, fencing, volleyball and rugby. Pizza and live music will be provided. Those expected to attend are Olympic athletes Chris Dorst (water polo, 1984) and Marybeth Dorst (swimming, 1980), and Paralympic athletes Sebastian De Francesco (table tennis, 19842000), Steven Toyoji (track & field, 2008) and Sharon Clark Kelleher (wheelchair tennis, 2000-2004).
