Basic yet thoughtful presents to have on hand

ith the arrival of the holiday season comes the flurry of planning and purchasing presents for everyone on your list. But when the unexpected happens — an office Secret Santa, new acquaintance, distant cousin or surprise holiday guest suddenly turns up — even the most creative gift-givers might need some backup.

Non-specific yet classy gifts can be kept on hand to please a range of people and preferences.

Local stores stock their shelves with a variety of options to bring cheer to every newfound friend and reconnected relative: Hand-crafted heartwood boxes, made in Washington state and designed from woods such as cherry, maple and teak, are among the most popular offerings at Shady Lane in downtown Palo Alto. Designs include the trademark “puzzle boxes,” which remain locked u n less opened by a unique series of taps and twists. For a present that would make an impression, Shady Lane carries decorative containers that can be given alone or used to package smaller gifts. The metal-framed blue-glass boxes appear decidedly feminine, while the striped onyx jars and vases could please either gender. Paired with a few smaller items — like a heartwood bookmark or decorative blown-glass paperweight — the containers could charm the

mother or father of a significant other.

As a more specialized option, Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park carries — you guessed it — an array of books. Each of the store’s employees specializes in specific genres, everything from mysteries to fine art and photography to science to children’s books. The staff provides personalized recommendations upon request.

“Say your 83-year-old great uncle comes to visit,” said floor manager Nancy Salmon, herself a specialist of fiction and biographies. “I’ll usually ask: What are his interests? What kinds of things does he like to do?”

For bibliophiles, Kepler’s carries Mudlark “book lovers” sets, complete with miniature notebook, magnetic page markers, bookplates (or name labels) and bookmarks.

But the store is not limited by its name. Bosses or recent graduates might appreciate the old-fashioned fountain pen collection, while crossword fanatics would appreciate the famous Seven Year Pen or the Puzzle Pen, which erases when used on newsprint.

Looking for something generic yet tasteful (no pun intended)? Gift baskets, such as those offered at Draeger’s Markets in Los Altos and Menlo Park, come prepackaged with an assortment of goodies to please any palate. Holiday varieties include the “Epicurean Holiday” — complete with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, imported pastas, specialty meats and Amarettini Italian cookies — and the “Holiday Snack,” with truffle almonds, popcorn, candies, cookies and chocolates.

Aspiring chefs or masters of the barbecue may enjoy a bottle of Palo Alto Fire Fighters Pepper Sauce, sold at the University Art Annex in Palo Alto. The condiment was originally an experiment run by Palo Alto firefighter Lee Taylor, who concocted a sauce from peppers grown behind Palo Alto Fire Station 5. Today, the sauce is bottled professionally and sold all over the country, with proceeds going to various charities and scholarships for local high school students.

The spicy sauce is often purchased with a set of screenprinted cotton dish towels, “one of our tried-and-true” gift suggestions for both men and women, said Tina Ford, store manager of the Annex. Handtowel designs include a pepper medley, garden vegetables, fall leaves, trees and colorful blooms.

For nature lovers, check out the shop’s Juniper Ridge potpourri sachets, small drawstring bags containing fragrant and sustainably harvested native Western plants like Siskiyou Cedar, Big Sur Sage and the seasonal Christmas Fir. One customer, Ford said, gifted the sachets together with the Annex’s decorative plant pot holders, which are made of burlap and insulated with waterproof plastic.

An extraordinary story of survival, resilience, and hope On a crisp blue early January morning, Sheri G. sat on the railing just outside her boyfriend’s fifth-story apartment, her feet dangling over the street beneath her.

Alienated, angry, and depressed, she’d done drugs most of the night, and a day after escaping yet another recovery program. She pleaded to no one around, “Why can’t I stop doing this?”

Whether a cry for help or an act of spite, she scooted forward ... just inches ... out into the cool mid-morning air. And 50 feet down.

Few people survive a three-story fall, let alone a five-story plunge. Sheri shattered her ankle, fractured her back, ruptured her spleen, and lacerated her liver.

Miraculously, she lived. Even more miraculous is what she’s done since, overcoming her addiction and the mental illness that fed it. Sheri suffered what was diagnosed as bipolar affective disorder.

Sheri’s father was a truck driver, her mother a homemaker. Her older brother excelled at sports.

Her elder sister wore a homecoming queen’s crown. But at the young age of 11, Sheri started cutting herself, using self-torture to sedate her already emerging inner demons.

At 14, her parents divorced. Not long after, her grandfather died. Her father became despondent.

Sheri “self destructed.”

In junior high, she started drinking. In high school, she began using hard drugs. She dropped out, seeking drugs even at the cost of selling herself. For a time, she lived in her Ford

LTD. At one point, she weighed only 98 pounds.

She eventually landed in prison for two years.

Despite her seemingly bleak situation, Sheri earned her GED while in prison. She won a “Spark Plug Award” from her fellow inmates for being optimistic and the one among them who always seemed so willing to help. She emerged from prison with hopes of turning her life around in the outside world.

But those hopes dimmed, and quickly. She worked, but had trouble keeping a job. With her mental state on a perpetual roller coaster, she filed 10 W-2s with the IRS in one year alone. Over time, she was in and out of 22 different recovery programs. She was, as she described herself, “a time-bomb ticking.”

Finally, during one holiday season, her employer sent her to a 30-day inpatient recovery program. In early January, she wound up in mental lockdown. She escaped, relapsed into drugs within hours, and sought refuge with her boyfriend. While he was in the shower, she went to -- and then over -- the railing.

She woke up in intensive care to discover her father crying at her bedside, a faint awareness she was loved, and a feeling that things were going to be fine.

Her survival may have been astounding, but her recovery wasn’t. She spent a month in intensive care and the next six on her back. She underwent four surgeries. She managed a series of part-time jobs but chronic pain kept her from working much.

Now, years later, thanks in part to Caminar,

the 49-year-old owns a hopeful future instead of a troubled past. In 2005, she attended Caminar’s Transition to College program. There, she met Jobs Plus program director Michael Schocket, who saw in Sheri someone who was eager, intelligent and, most of all, who had lived the experiences of so many Caminar clients.

Sheri is now an employee of Caminar’s Jobs Plus employment program, helping individuals get established in new jobs even though, once upon time, she couldn’t keep one of her own. She meets with each of her clients at least four hours a week, to make sure they understand their duties, their schedules, and the life skills it takes to make it in the workplace.

One client with a severe stutter and learning disabilities had trouble looking people in the eye. Sheri spent time coaching her how to make personal contact. Today the 21-year-old is a courtesy clerk training to become a cashier.

Despite her desperate leap into oblivion, Sheri has become a testament to the human capacity to overcome adversity. She’s enormously grateful to all those who helped her along —like Caminar — and she’s focused her energies on helping others turn the corner as she did.

Santa visits Woodside district fire stations Santa is coming to all three Woodside Fire Protection District stations — in Woodside, Portola Valley and Emerald Hills — on Wednesday, Dec. 14, just like he has for more than 20 years.

Battalion Chief Jerry Nave says the firefighters have been hosting holiday open houses for so many years; they’re now seeing second-generation visitors. “It’s a small community, that’s why we like it,” he says, recognizing some young married people who grew up in the area and are now bringing their babies to the stations for photo opportunities with Santa.

Families are invited to climb on fire trucks and enjoy cookies, candy canes and cocoa from 7 to 9 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped

toy for the Toys for Tots drive, a community outreach to lessfortunate children in San Mateo County. Toy collection bins will remain outside the stations until Dec. 22.

Fire Station 7 is at 3111 Woodside Road in Woodside. Fire Station 8 is at 135 Portola Road in Portola Valley. Fire Station 19 is at 4091 Jefferson Ave. in Emerald Hills.

The stations are decorated with colorful characters the firefighters cut out of plywood and painted when they started the tradition years ago.

Gingerbread House workshop for kids On Saturday, Dec. 10, the Village Pub will offer a holiday

baking class for children ages 5 and up. The hands-on class will teach kids how to use a selection of utensils, how to follow a recipe, and how to decorate.

Each child will have his own gingerbread house to prepare.

annual canned food drive, which was started many years ago by the late Coach Ben Parks.

Working with Second Harvest Food Bank, students collect canned goods at Safeway in downtown Menlo Park and in Sharon Heights, Key Market in Redwood City, Whole Foods in Palo Alto, and Roberts Market in Woodside.

The food will be distributed to families at the Ecumenical Hunger Program, 2411 Pulgas Ave. in East Palo Alto, from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 10.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO INCREASE SOLID WASTE / RECYCLING RATES AND ESTABLISH FEES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL SERVICES IN THE CITY OF MENLO PARK The City Council of the City of Menlo Park hereby gives public notice of its intent to increase the existing solid waste / recycling base rates for customers within the City of Menlo Park for the collection of solid waste and recyclable materials. Also, the Council hereby gives public notice of its intent to increase the existing fees for supplemental services not covered in the base rates. These increases, if approved, will be effective on January 1, 2012. The City Council plans to consider these increases at a public hearing on December 13, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the City of Menlo Park Council Chambers Building at 701 Laurel Street - Civic Center.

What are the proposed new base rates: Several rate schedules will be considered at the public hearing. However, the maximum increase in monthly base rates the Council will consider for both residential and commercial service is 10%.

John (Jack) McBirney Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Valley Church, 10885 N. Stelling Road in Cupertino for John (Jack) McBirney of Morgan Hill who died Nov. 27. He was 83.

Mr. McBirney lived in Menlo Park in the late 1980s. The family business, McBirneyConstruction, built homes and condominiums in Menlo Park, particularly in the downtown area and in the Willows.

Mr. McBirney was born in Toledo and moved to California with his family in 1935. He received his degree in engineering from Stanford University in 1951.

He was a civil engineer in Santa Barbara for 13 years. At that point, he dedicated his

life to Christian service as an overseas missionary, working with his wife and family in a ministry to children and teenagers, say family members.

After returning to the United States, he received a master’s degree in Christian education from Pensacola University in Florida and founded San Francisco Christian Schools and, later, The King’s Academy in Sunnyvale. He retired in 1996.

Mr. McBirney is survived by his wife, Allegra of Morgan Hill; children, Mike of Santa Barbara, Mark of Menlo Park, Connie McKenzie of Rudyard, Michigan, Scott of Menlo Park, David of Morgan Hill, and Kim Windsor of San Martin; and 21 grandchildren.
