She attended elementary schools in Mendocino, Healdsburg and Martinez, California, Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California and the University of California at Berkeley, graduating in 1953. In 1953, she married her husband, Don, a Navy pilot, and, following his graduation from Stanford Law School in 1956, moved to Del Mar, California where she raised two children, Susan and Bruce. Returning to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1962, she taught first at Portola Valley Windmill pre-school,

and then K-1 at Ladera and Las Lomitas elementary schools, until her retirement from teaching. Her interests were many, including golf, sailing, flying, wine, gardening, travel and various volunteer activities. She is survived by her brother, her husband of 57 years, two children, six grandchildren and many, many friends. No services are planned. Take a swing at a golf ball, have a glass of wine and smile. That would make her happy. If you care to make a memorial donation, she suggested one to Stanford University with a cover note or notation that it is for 'Dr. Advani's Research', and mailed to Ranjana Advani MD, Stanford Cancer Center, Stanford, California (a wonderful doctor doing lymphoma research), to Pathways Hospice Foundation, Sunnyvale (which gave her so much invaluable care during her final days) or to the charity of your choice. The book, his ninth, is due to arrive in bookstores the same day.

Although the story is the work of Mr. Eisler’s imagination, he considers it “a fictional explanation for what has been reported in the real world. In fact, the novel’s original manuscript included more than 80 footnotes that cited news articles detailing the factual events that form the story’s backbone. “If the things in the thriller couldn’t really have happened, he said, “then for me the thrill starts

to evaporate. Mr. Eisler, a Cornell-trained lawyer turned CIA covert operative turned thriller writer, prizes himself on his penchant for detail. He visits the locations he depicts in his books to make sure he portrays them accurately; he fashions his characters based on interviews with experts and his experiences as a covert operative with the CIA; and he looks to the headlines for inspiration while crafting his plots. “I’m drawn to thrillers — both as a reader and a writer — that are as accurate as possible, he said. Mr. Eisler, who maintains his own news and politics blog, “Heart of the Matter, dedicates “Inside Out to the bloggers. For each copy of “Inside Out ordered from Kepler’s before or during his June 29 event, Mr. Eisler said he will donate $5 to AlterNet, an independent, progressive news service. “The blogosphere, I find, has much more of a devotion to getting to the truth, he said. “The information I come across in the blogosphere and write about in my own blog ends up forming the basis for my novels. Other book tour appearances double as fundraisers for Firedoglake, GRITtv, and Truthout, also independent, progressive news sources. Mr. Eisler is distrustful of what he calls “establishment media: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs. But he doesn’t want anyone dismissing him as just another radical. “The mainstream enslaves itself to the government by permitting government sources anonymity, Mr. Eisler said, “not only without good reason, but in fact in violation of the standards of integrity set by the newspapers in question. “I’m pretty political, he said. “That’s why I read so much, and it’s why I blog myself. “A lot of what the new book is about is the way the government manipulates the mainstream media so that the mainstream media essentially launders government propaganda, Mr. Eisler said. “Everything that’s bad for America and good for thriller writers is in the book. Although his writing has gotten more political since his first novel “Rain Fall, Mr. Eisler stresses that the purpose of his novels is still to entertain. “When I want to make an overt political argument, that’s what my blog is for, Mr. Eisler said. “The main purpose of my novels has always been to entertain, Mr. Eisler added. “They’re thrillers. If you’re not thrilled, I haven’t done my job. A

Menlo Park Legends makes its move By Michael Abramson Special to The Almanac

D

espite only having one full year under its belt, the Menlo Park Legends semipro baseball team is not curbing its expectations. “We want to win league then go to Wichita and play for a national championship, simple as that, said David Klein, the manager, starting catcher, and founder of the Legends, and a Menlo-Atherton High School grad. “I don’t think there is any reason we shouldn’t win league. The Legends are 11-4 so far, the most impressive victory a 2-1 nailbiter on the road against the San Luis Obispo Rattlers on June 21, a team Klein described as “our first real test. The Legends gave up only four hits in the game and finished with Menlo-Atherton grad Corey Zirbes throwing three scoreless innings of one-hit ball.

Nevertheless, the Legends recently hit a bit of a bump in the road, dropping two games to the Santa Barbara Foresters on June 22 and 23 by scores of 5-3 and 6-3. The Foresters are the 2006 and 2008 National Baseball Congress national champs and except for 2002, the California Collegiate League champs every year since 1993. Still, the Legends put up 17 hits in the two games, and simply competing against one of the best semi-pro teams in the country speaks volumes. Playing in the Pacific-West Baseball League, the Legends compete against six other teams from around the Bay Area. The league is competitive, but Klein says: “This team is going to be playing for a long time and will keep going up every year. I expect to join the TriState League next year. Despite the team’s relative infancy

Center fielder Daniel Johnston, an M-A grad and now a student at Canada College, was just drafted in the 47th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Florida Marlins. Joseph E.A. Sauer of Woodside died June 18 at the age of 92. Mr. Sauer was born in Oakland and raised in Chico. He gradu-

and likely several tournaments throughout the summer, as well. Charlie Peck will act as player/coach of the team, similar to David Klein’s position with the baseball team. Klein does have a message for another local semi-pro team: “I really want to take on the Palo Alto Oaks, but they don’t want to play us. They beat us last year, so I’ve got a little vengeance for them. They have an open invitation to play us, anytime, anywhere. A

ated from UC Berkeley in 1941, the same year he was married to Cecilia Welsh, also a UC Berkeley graduate. Mr. Sauer began his career in accounting at Pan American Airways. He later worked for Skinner and Joseph Sauer Hammond and obtained his CPA license. After a year in Bakersfield, he joined Barlow, Davis and Wood, where he became a partner. Through a series of mergers, he became retired partner of Deloitte. An Eagle Scout in his youth, Mr. Sauer loved the mountains. He backpacked and went fly-fishing on 38 trips to the High Sierras, Oregon and Washington, say family members. From Yosemite to Lassen Park, he and his family camped in or visited 17 national parks in the Western United States and Canada. He and his wife, Cecilia, traveled extensively, visiting Europe, China, Tibet, seven other Asian countries, as well as Canada, Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico. He was an avid bridge player, enjoying twice-weekly games. Mr. Sauer is survived by his children, Teresa (Teri) of Silverdale, Washington; Gregory of Orlando, Florida; Karen of Boston; and Paul of Woodside; plus seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife of 60 years, Cecilia, died in 2002. Funeral services have been held.
