Sparking
the
Grants fund innovative educational programs at Menlo Park district schools By Andrea Gemmet Almanac Staff Writer
T
he slap of jump-ropes fills the gym at Oak Knoll School in Menlo Park. The teens from Jumping for Joy, a Santa Clara-based youth team, perform their high-energy routine by starting with basic jump-rope moves that accelerate into complicated, precision stunts. After school, students inspired by the performance can participate in jump-rope clinics, and go home with a rope and skills to pass along to their classmates. The performance isn’t just about entertaining kids on a recent school day. Surging enrollment in the Menlo Park City School District is crowding the playgrounds, and educators are looking for ways to motivate students to get exercise, especially exercise
that takes up a minimal amount of space. Jumping rope fits the bill, and it’s one of a myriad of clever ideas funded annually by the Menlo-Atherton Education Foundation’s Jeannie Ritchie grants. The grants area a bit like the idea behind micro-loan programs, in which a small sum of money can make a big difference. Jeannie Ritchie grants range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, and are awarded annually to fund programs pitched by teachers. Some of them, like Jumping for Joy, encourage fitness. Others, like the upcoming Life Cycles Unlimited progam, reinforce science lessons by bringing butterfly larvae, tadpoles and frogs into second-grade classrooms. The Picasso traveling art museum exposes middle schoolers to art and the cultural riches of Spanish-speaking people, with students in
Spanish class getting extra, in-depth lessons. Other programs funded this year are designed to help students explore music, physics, literature, living skills and diversity. Even students can pitch programs for Jeannie Ritchie grants. Hillview middle school students put on monthly diversity events at lunchtime, focusing on a different world culture through displays, activities and food. about native Ohlone people by having them try their hands at spear-throwing games, grinding acorns, and starting a fire without matches. “They were hanging on every word,� Ms. Boatright says. “(Mr. Gutierrez) sings with them, gives them a hands-on introduction to the way (the Ohlone people) lived, in a way a textbook can’t do.� Students got to grind acorns, dress up in traditional clothes and play games that helped hone hunting skills. They also found out that traditional women’s work was harder than it looks, as they attempted to carry a basket loaded with acorns that hangs from a forehead strap, Ms. Boatright says. “You have to bend down without dropping the basket,� she explains. “They spilled hundreds and hundreds of acorns.� Cindy Guerra, another thirdgrade teacher at Oak Knoll, says that Mr. Gutierrez has an activity that helps illustrate just about every concept the students have been taught in class. “He, in my opinion, is the best because he is Native American, he practices all his customs and traditions, and he doesn’t miss a beat,� Ms. Guerra says. The Hands-On History program has three parts, starting with the Ohlone Indian program. Students also take a trip to the historic Woodside general store as part of the exploration of California history and westward expansion, and this week, students will get a surprise visit from “Oh Suzannah.� Suzannah is played by former teacher Laura Steuer, who comes in costume and in character as a young woman who traveled to California with her family in horse-drawn wagon. She tells stories based on historical accounts and diaries from the Gold Rush era, she says. “I say to them, ‘No one knows it like I do, because I was there!’� Ms. Steuer says. At Laurel School, the kindergarteners in the district’s bilingual Spanish immersion program were the entertainment at last month’s Spanish culture day. With help from teachers Benjamin Salas-Velasco, who is from Spain, and Andrea Vereau, the two immersion classes learned a flamenco dance routine and performed for their classmates to kick off the day-long event. Accompanied by a guitarist and led by a real flamenco dancer, the girls swish their ruffled skirts

The Aesthetics Research Center and the boys, in broad-brimmed hats and dotted sashes, clap and stamp to the music. The audience learned to count and sing the simple song in Spanish, rocking the multi-use room with shouts of “Ole!� before heading out to art activities followed by an authentically Spanish lunch of paella. Earlier in the year, students celebrated the culture of Peru, and in May, they’ll explore Mexican culture. The program is designed to expose students outside the immersion program to the diversity within the Spanish-speaking world, as well as bring together Laurel’s bilingual immersion kindergarteners with their first-grade counterparts at Encinal School. The Jeannie Ritchie grants are named for one of the founders of the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation, and in the past 24 years, it has doled out about $500,000 in grants. A panel of teachers and foundation board members vote on applications that are submitted anonymously, judging them on their relevance to the curriculum, as well as their creativity and innovation. Ms. Boatright, the Oak Knoll teacher, says that without the grants, there wouldn’t be a way to fund a program like the Hands-On History that her third-graders so enjoyed. Of course, the grants are only a small part of what the education foundation funds every year. Foundation grants made up almost 7 percent of the Menlo Park City School District’s annual budget last year, funding everything from librarians to science curriculum materials, music classes to professional development for teachers. Jeannie Ritchie grants made up 13 percent of the foundation’s $1.8 million grant to the district last year.

He was a guest lecturer at U.C. Berkeley’s graduate school of business, and a director of the German Chamber Of Commerce in San Francisco for 10 years. Mr. Schoebel traveled extensively, and counted a trekking trip to Nepal and Mount Everest as the highlight, family member said. He was an early member of the Alpine Hills Tennis Club in Portola Valley, the University Club and the St. Francis Yacht Club. For 20 years, he enjoyed racing his boat on the San Francisco Bay and won many trophies in the Danforth Ocean Racing Series, his family said. He volunteered as an AYSO soccer referee. He is survived by his wife, Christiane Schoebel of Portola Valley; his children David Schoebel of Woodside and Peter Schoebel of Herndon, Virginia; and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations be made to Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley.

Konrad Schoebel Developed instrumentation tape recorders
Konrad Schoebel, a resident of Atherton and Portola Valley, died March 1. He was 86. Mr. Schoebel earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and optics from the Academy of Applied Technology in Munich, Germany. He came to United States in 1951 to pursue a career in the magnetic tape recording industry. In 1957, he founded Precision Instrument Co. and developed and manufactured various advanced instrumentation tape recorders for commercial and military applications, his family said. In 1974, he started his second company, Precision Echo Inc. In 1984, he sold his company to DRS Technologies of Oakland, New Jersey.

Children’s room at library reopens By Renee Batti Almanac News Editor
A
half-day of kids’ activities and festivities is planned for Saturday, March 27, for the grand reopening of the children’s room in the Menlo Park Library. The room, which soon will have a neon sign naming it the Children’s Corner, was closed for months for the renovation project; the children’s section moved to the library’s basement during that time. Whereas the old children’s room had no computers for children to use, the renovated space has six standard computers, three earlyliteracy computers for children learning to read, and a self-checkout computer. There are also new shelving, desks and chairs, and carpeting. The walls are newly painted, and kids will have covered rising benches to perch on during the popular storytime events. The storytime area is in front of windows that look out on Alma

Summer school set for major changes in MP district By Andrea Gemmet

Street — a favorite place for kids to watch passing trains. The $500,000-plus renovation was paid for largely by private donations through a fundraising effort of the Menlo Park Library Foundation. Donors were given the chance to name items in the room — from shelving to computer stations. Children’s Librarian Michelle Barrese said that, within the last four years, there has been a “tremendous growth” in the demand for children’s and teens’ services. For example, circulation of materials for that age range increased by 142 percent; attendance at programs has increased by 595 percent; and attendance for schoolage programs has increased by 614 percent, she said. With the renovation, the teens’ section was moved to a nearby space in the main section of the library, making room for the new features for younger kids. The children’s room reopened March 19. The Saturday grand opening will include visits by Bos-

raditional summer school is a thing of the past in the Menlo Park City School District. At the March 10 meeting, the board voted 5-0 to drop the existing program, due to budget cuts. It will be replaced with yetto-be-created programs specific to each of the K-8 district’s schools. Superintendent Ken Ranella originally suggested eliminating summer school entirely, but that idea didn’t sit well with school board members. Menlo Park isn’t the only local district that contemplated dropping summer school entirely. State funding restrictions on summer school money were loosened, so that the cash can be spent on other programs. With California districts bracing for big cuts in state funding, the option to use summer school funding for other purposes has been very tempting.
Menlo Park will receive $42,000 in state funding for summer school, according to Mr. Ranella. “I’ve always been highly supportive of our summer school. I think most of it was my idea,” he said. “But there comes a time when you can’t afford it.” Instead of a program that costs almost $97,000 to serve 90 regular education students in grades K-5, each of the district’s principals has been given $10,000 and leeway to create a program. The summer “academic intervention” could take place on each school’s campus, or off-site in the students’ own communities. Rather than lasting a typical halfday for several weeks, it could be spread out over the summer, with students getting small-group or individual tutoring. There are a lot of possibilities, but as yet, no solid plan of action has been articulated to the public. Several parents at the meeting
expressed doubts about ending a well-liked and successful program and replacing it with an unknown. “It worries me that on one side, there is a great program, and on the other side, there is big question mark,” said district parent Lisa de Avila. Board president Jeff Child pointed out that the bulk of the cuts for summer school are coming from budgets for transportation and administrative costs. “Last year, we spent $51,000 on teachers, this year we’ll spend $40,000, and if (the principals) need more, we’ll give it to them,” Mr. Child said. Encinal Principal Allison Liner called the opportunity to create a new summer program “exciting.” “I think we will do a good job of instructing children through this model,” said Mr. Ranella. “I think it will become a model for other districts that are cutting summer school.” A
Gordon Russell saluted for lifetime of achievement Portola Valley resident and venture capitalist Gordon Russell is one of six honorees in this year’s “Lifetimes of Achievement” awards for outstanding contributions to their communities, given annually by the nonprofit Palo Alto-based Avenidas, which serves the elderly of the Midpeninsula and their families. The honorees were chosen from among 39 nominees and announced at a private reception on Thursday, Feb. 10, in Palo Alto. A garden party to which the

Mr. Russell has a bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth College, where he is a member of the school’s Native American Visiting Committee and President’s Leadership Council. He has chaired the school’s medical school board of overseers. He has held several executive positions in the biomedical and health care industries and was,
for more than 20 years, a general partner at Sequoia Capital. Locally, he has served as a volunteer for health care initiatives and was a board member of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and East Palo Alto’s Ravenswood Family Health Center, a nonprofit that treats recent immigrants and the uninsured. He is the father of one son and two stepsons, one of whom is the current mayor of Vancouver, Canada, site of the 2010 winter Olympics.

Simone Robinson, a native of Casablanca known amongfriends for her cooking abilities, succumbed to cancer in her Menlo Park home Simone Robinson on March 2. She was 75. Ms. Robinson grew up in Casablanca, Morocco. She met her future husband, William Robinson, there in 1952, when he was serving at a U.S. Air Force base. As neither spoke the other’s language, they communicated solely through a French-English dictionary in the first year of their relationship, according to family members. The couple moved to San Francisco in 1955, and in 1964 to Menlo Park, where they raised four boys. After the children were grown, Ms. Robinson worked as a hair stylist in Menlo Park. She was a member of the Beth Jacob synagogue in Redwood City, and was close with many of its members. Ms. Robinson is survived by her N B R I E F S

Former 49ers quarterback Steve Bono has joined a Menlo Park-based financial firm as a principal, the firm announced March 8.
