Rumours are flying around that after the book “Kake Make and the Dwarf of Mess” was published, all kids learned and got used to being tidy. The book tells a story about a naughty girl named Kornelija, who nicknames herself Kake Make. This little mischief hates being tidy, so her grandmother tells a story about the Dwarf of Mess who visits such stubborn children at night and tidies up their toys scattered around the whole room. One night Kake Make wakes up and sees that mystical Dwarf who is tidying away her things and putting them into his bag. The girl decides to follow the Dwarf and climbs up the ladder after him to the Moon and gets into his secret shed. In that place the little Kake Make has to fulfil some tasks (and the young readers are also encouraged to engage in this process!). Of course, one of the most important tasks is to put all things scattered around into places they belong to. When all challenges are completed, the girl wakes up in her room – the room where all her toys are placed neatly on the shelves. But that is not the end of the story. The last page is dedicated to parents – the other night, the Dwarf of Mess carrying his special bag appears in the parents’ bedroom and is highly determined to tidy everything up... Lina utautė is a painter and illustrator of children’s books and, as an artist, she has referred to herself as ”a bit of a writer”.

Oh, that naughty Kake Make! Turns a deaf ear on Mummy, turns a deaf ear on Daddy, does not pay attention to Granny’s words. She misbehaves day after day, to be more precise, at least three times a day! So there is no wonder that one day a very strange thing happened. Kake Make‘s ears (as if they had agreed on that before) suddenly skipped off to the floor, frolicked through the kitchen, arranged a small scale race in the hall between each other in order to find out which was faster, and finally disappeared behind the back door – without a single glance back! If you are interested in what happened next, just read the book. And do not forget to look for those naughty Kake Make’s ears. The author

This is the first book for the youngest readers written the by popular Lithuanian singer of Irish descent rica Jennings-Did iulis. This bilingual book contains short, bright poems about animals, composed in English and Lithuanian. The poems are accompanied with warm, colourful illustrations. For toddlers who have just started composing first sentences such playful rhymes would be very useful in accustoming their little ears to more than one language. In her book “Mano gyvūnai. My Animals” JenningsDidžiulis introduces 12 great animals: a purring cat, an extremely friendly dog, a tall yellow giraffe, a charming monkey, a penguin wearing a tailcoat, a big lazy elephant, a glorious roaming lion, a little squeaking mouse, a green jumping frog, a shy deer, a bird with an extremely hard beak, and a sleepyhead honey-loving bear. “Mano gyvūnai. My Animals” is like a textbook for readers of various ages. This book is also useful for children from nurseries and elementary schools where those little scholars are learning English from the very first days. Musical rhymes will be helpful for toddlers who have just started forming first short sentences to get some knowledge about two languages. What about the adult readers? Parents who still consider their English very poor can enjoy this book as a basic learning tool and for artistic personalities it may serve as an adviser on choosing some new poems worth learning by heart and reciting to Santa Claus.

This picture book about fun adventures of a smart and creative little mouse named Anicetas is for the youngest readers. Let’s meet the little mouse Anicetas. He is almost like you: vigilant, with twinkling little eyes, wide open little ears and a long tail... Oh, excuse me, you, children, do not have tails. There are always plenty of bright and wild ideas ashing through Anicetas’ mind. He is never bored as there is simply no time for boredom, something is happening all the time. I have drawn up all those adventures into this book. I simply cannot stop drawing. When I was a little girl, even tables and chairs were decorated with my drawings, the same situation was with boring books that lacked illustrations. Finally, my parents sent me to Kaunas School of Art. Not only because this particular school was near our home. The main reason was that in that school I was finally free to draw during lessons. Later, I graduated from ilnius State Institute of Art and began drawing illustrations for children’s books, written by professional writers. But Anicetas is a pure product of my imagination and fantasies – this little mouse is mine from his nose to the tip of his tail. I live in ilnius and London. And a bit in between, in planes, as I am constantly migrating between those cities. I feel free to paint and draw wherever I want: on walls, in books, on theatre stages, even on ships. The children’s room will be much cosier and more attractive, if we allow them to contribute to its decoration. This book offers the little creators plenty of ideas how to create a unique environment, full of pretty colourful things. It encourages children to look at the world creatively, feel free to experiment and improvise – the world around us has so many details which can be used to create a variety of beautiful and useful things. With a little bit of imagination a simple clock will turn into a silver robonaut or a butterfly, the pencils, brushes and scissors will “sail” on an impressive steamer, a meadow will blossom on a coat-hanger and a drawer handles will become a cute elf house. The author of the book, Natalija Brancevičienė, has ample experience of creating handicraft designs and working with children. She has published two books on embroidery, and is the founder of a handicraft school where both children and adults can learn this subtle art: http://rankdarbiumokykla.blogspot.com

Starting from September many pre-schoolers will travel the world of knowledge together with the main characters of the learning tool kit – Yo and Ho. The authors of the kit, with many years of experience in educating little children, and who have written the highly popular primary school learning tools, “Pupa”, developed this educational material on the basis of the project of the renewed General Curriculum Framework for Pre-Primary Education and Self-Education (in 2013, the first part of the kit) and on the approved program (in 2014, the second and third parts of the kit). This kit will help integrate and develop the competency necessary for a child’s life and education (self-education). The distinction between individual competence is conditional, because different activities develop abilities that are attributed to different areas of competence. The Principles of Learning Material Presentation The integrated learning material is divided into themes which correspond to nature’s calendar. A lot of time is dedicated to practical activities, such as tests or experiments. The children are taught how to work on their own (for example, they have to look at a big group poster or a part of it, which is marked by a frame, and to find the same part in their books; after that, they have to compare, analyse, and name the similarities and dissimilarities of the parts they have found.) Each group poster is dedicated to one particular week.

34

Pre-schoolers are introduced with letters and numbers. The rate of learning is slow. The letters are categorized according to the number of composing elements; for example the letter I is composed of one stick, letters like T,V,L are composed of two sticks, letters A, K, Y, Z, Ž, H, F, N – three sticks, letters E, Ė, M – four sticks. After that, come categories of letters with curves, bows, or baskets. The children are taught how to build letters from strips or how to make letters with their bodies. At this age, the children are introduced only to capital letters (no caudata[tailed vowels} letters). Each week is devoted to the next letter in the alphabet. Plenty of exercises are given in the exercise notebook. Introduction to numbers: knowledge of numbers up to 5 is repeated and consolidated in September; after that, children are introduced to numbers 7, 8, 9, 10 and 0. The children are given one-anda-half weeks to learn this. The exercises involve many things or drawings of things; children learn to compare, group, add, subtract, identify simple planar figures, and orient themselves in space. A lot of attention is given to following specific instructions.

The exercises, devoted to training artistic and health care competence (for example, art, music, dance, movement, acting), are given in the teacher’s book. Regarding children’s abilities, the teacher should select the most suitable competencies and interpret them creatively (this should be done with all the teaching material). The group calendar, which presents the most important events of the group and possible homework, is devoted to working with the families of children (at home, children and their parents should browse through a book, and talk about the given themes, etc.).

35

How to work with the tool kit Yo Ho! Each week has: 1 poster; 4 book flaps of the child’s book (2 pages each); 6-8 pages of notepad tasks; 4-8 additional worksheets; relevant recordings; interactive tasks developed for some of the themes;

material for the group calendar; detailed descriptions of each day’s activities (recommended, but optional) in the teacher’s book.

Group poster – a coloured illustration of the week’s theme. The week starts with a general discussion about the poster. It is recommended that different parts of the poster (sub-themes) are emphasized each day by a frame. Seeing the framed part of the poster, the children will concentrate better and focus on a specific image. The framed section is presented on the left side of the Pre-schooler Book’s flap. The children are taught to work independently with the book: looking at the framed part of the poster and comparing it to a specific page in their books. They will look for similarities and differences between them and point them out. Almost all the flaps on the left have from 1 to 5 differences – except in some cases where the child’s book will provide an exact copy of the poster. km

The notepad tasks are meant for all children. The teacher tears the necessary worksheets out of the notepad or lets the children do it themselves. The tasks are done on separate sheets. If a child does all the tasks brilliantly, the teacher will stick a star sticker on their sheet (as a reward). The children collect the sheets in their folders.

Teachers’ opinion This Set gives the teacher time to observe and listen to children, to find out about their needs. I’m glad that the teacher can spend more time with children instead of searching for some new activities, ideas, or books. The child has an opportunity to gain knowledge on his/her own: the set allows children to compare, observe, experiment, ask questions, share experience etc. The Set is full of new, attractive ideas, which are not only suitable for children, but also help the teacher at his/her work with children (The Morning Circle). Aldona Kaminskienė, Kaišiadorys Nursery-kindergarten „Spindulys“

The contents and the structure of The Set fully correspond to the standards of preschool education. Working with the material which is provided by this set, all five competences of pre-schoolers are trained: it evokes the children’s wish to acknowledge, discover, analyse, and discuss; it also trains children’s writing and practical skills; and it motivates children to be creative, think logically, and draw conclusions, etc. The set also allows the teacher to individuate or differentiate the learning process. This meets the requirements of a preschool learning programme. Children’s paintings and other creative works became more original and colourful, and their pictures now have more new details like balconies, columns, stairs, foundations or smoky chimneys. Before using this Set, the children’s pictures had no such features. Albina Kunigonienė, Raiseiniai Nursery-kindergarten „Liepaitė“

Daily Plan: morning circle; tasks for individual work, work in pairs and in groups; tasks for development of artistic and health maintenance skills; creativity training tasks; research and experiments. 3. Additional material: a variety of texts, games, riddles, songs (music) and plays relevant to the topic, and so on; hand-out sheets to differentiate and individualize activities, for work in pairs and in groups; week’s information for the group calendar. Detailed activity descriptions and material are provided only for the first four days of the week. The plan does not contain Friday’s activities. I’m very pleased that The Set offers some references; some of them refer to important literary works. The learning can be enlivened with the help of interactive tasks. It is a strong and solid system. Jovita Niauronienė, Panevėžys County Dembava Nurserykindergarten „Smalsutis“

Planning the educational activities, it is very important to consider the different abilities of children, to leave some space for creative interpreting and to create some role-playing games, through which children can test their communication and collaboration skills practically. This can be easily achieved with the help of this Set. Daiva Navickienė, Kuršėnai Nursery-kindergarten „Nykštukas“

It is a wonderful achievement that the activities are versatile; the children can walk about, change the place of the activity or the tools, or even gather in groups. It is very important for children. The pre-schoolers liked the suggested exploratory activities – for instance, playing with straws or sticks. We even explored some plastic straws and tried to imagine what would change if one of the little pigs had built a house out of such straws.

53

NAUDINGI PATARIMAI

Kaip ir kada galima vartoti šaltalankius • Sergant avitaminoze galima gerti šaltalankio sultis, atskiestas vandeniu (santykiu 1:3). • Užkietėjus viduriams, paimkite valgomąjį šaukštą šaltalankio sėklų, užpilkite 400 ml vandens, pavirinkite ant silpnos ugnies 15–20 min. Gerkite 3 kartus per dieną 10 min. prieš valgį. • Nusilpusiems ligoniams sustiprėti padės 2–3 kartus per dieną geriamas arbatinis šaukštelis šaltalankio aliejaus. Vartoti 15–20 min. prieš valgį.

Confectionery stories and recipes book’s author Lithuanian journalist Daiva Trečiokaitė became interested in baking living in Austria. It is a collection of central European – Austrian, German, Czech, Hungarian, Italian and even French – pastries and confections. The book is illustrated by a professional Lithuanian food photographer Domantas Kvedaras. Looking at them you will feel a smell of chocolate, cinnamon, cloves… The book is of unconventional structure: the sweets and savoury cookies are classified according to the time when we can eat the most delicious. Here you’ll find nearly 100 recipes: both quick to make sweets and such that you can be eaten only after a few days – from simple biscuits and doughnuts to cakes, strudels and gingerbread houses. When your heart melts, look for recipes of salty pastries or those with a lot of spices. In addition, waiting until the dough rises, until you can pull out of the oven the cake or cookies, you will not get bored, because the book is rich in stories about products, pastry, and pieces of advice. For example, do you know types of flour? How to keep dough from sticking to biscuit cutters and raisins from not sinking in the dough? Why beaten eggs have to be heated? How to prepare yeast dough? So with this book you will not only be able to be proud of your selfmade mouth-watering “masterpieces” but also of the acquired knowledge.

In his book of essays, a well-known man of culture and politics and a former cultural attaché in the Kaliningrad Region tells the story of Königsberg, its past and present. Königsberg – once a city in which the Prussian culture intertwined with those of Germany and Lithuania, became a Russian cultural periphery after the Second World War. This is an impressive story of a place which is gone and yet is still alive, and of a coexistence of different personalities and cultures. The book introduces the most famous personalities of Königsberg: the German philosopher I. Kant, a famous Romantic author E.T. Hoffman, and L. Reza. It also reveals the cultural and political life of the current Kaliningrad region so little familiar to Lithuanians. This is the fourth revised edition in Lithuania. The book has won the literary prize of Lithuanian writer Ieva Simonaitytė. Arvydas Juozaitis (b.1956) – an author of 20 books, playwright and philosopher. In the past – a famous athlete and Olympic bronze medalist. His book “Riga – Nobody’s Civilization” is to be published in Latvian soon.

It is a book of short texts by Sigitas Parulskis. Kafkaesque and absurdly comical stories, magical experiences and situations of our daily life, in which a man meets a woman, a hero meets his past life, art meets daily life, and this day meets eternity. The characters’ loneliness and power of their feelings unfold in the book. I am not a cynic. At best, I am a teller of inconvenient truth, like the ancient Cynics. Let emotional tears drop into your glass of good wine. Sigitas Parulskis (1965) is one of the best contemporary Lithuanian writers. He is a poet, a prose writer, a playwright, an essayist, and a translator. His work has been awarded with numerous prizes, including the Prize of Z. Gėlė, the Yotvingian Prize, the Prizes of St. Christopher and the Lithuanian Writers’ Union. In 2004, the writer was awarded the National Prize. In 2007, his collection of short stories “A Snail with a Baseball Bat” was named the best book of the year. Currently, he’s the most translated Lithuanian author. His first novel “Three Seconds of Heaven” has been translated into Latvian, Italian, Swedish, Albanian, Slovenian, Polish and German. His collection of poems “Marble Dog” has been translated into Swedish and Norwegian, a book of essays and poems has been rendered into Greek, and a book of his poems has been published in Ireland. Parulskis’ work has also been published in periodicals and separate publications in Russian, English, Finnish, Czech, French, and other languages. Each new work by Sigitas Parulskis becomes an important event in the world of Lithuanian literature.

For this novel Sigitas Parulskis received the Person of Tolerance 2012 Award from the Sugihara Diplomats for Life Foundation. The novel “Darkness and Partners” deals with the topic of the Holocaust in Lithuania. Mass killings of Jews begin in Lithuania during World War 2. Lithuanians soon join the Nazis who organize the Holocaust. The book reveals the drama of a man who became a witness of mass murders of the Jews, the murderers’ drinking companion, their mate who is unable to change the flow of events. S. Parulskis tries to look at the Holocaust through the eyes of the perpetrators. Vincentas narrowly avoids being shot. After that, he concludes a contract – he will take pictures of the massacres to please certain “esthetic” tastes of an SS officer. Although Vincentas, who joins the extermination squad, does not become a murderer himself, he captures everything through the camera lens, and gradually sinks into the darkness. Cocaine and alcohol tone down the feeling of guilt, but you can’t hide from you inner hell. This novel is also a love story. This love is passionate, with numerous erotic descriptions, but it is also permeated with guilt. Vincentas loves Judita, who is Jewish. In the beginning their relationship was marred by the fact that Judita was married to Aleksandras, hence their love was unlawful and had to be kept a secret. Later the conflict gets deepened because Vincentas joins the squad of executioners, yet he swears his love to a representative of the persecuted nation. He pretends that everything can be combined, but redemption is hardly possible. The novel is full of symbols and allusions, of which the biblical parallels are the most striking. The characters are given biblical names. Vincentas tries to find identity with the Christ, and here we can also find the ideology of martyrdom and motives of redemption.

“My Three Only Ones” is an intriguing, intimate and true-to-life story of a woman and her choices. It talks about the triangles and polygons of love into which fate often throws us, and the fact that life without love is empty and meaningless. This is a novel about the essence love and suffering of the soul, about how love “happens” and isn’t achieved no matter how hard the efforts. 1994. Foreigners “discover” Lithuania and its women, and the women discover the world. Camille, like all the women in the world, longs and searches for true love. She is ready for anything – with an open heart she dives into the turbulence of life, indulges in adventures, and believes in miracles. In Lithuania Camille meets Ali from Jordan, who invites the young woman to celebrate the New Year in Istanbul. This triggers a chain of unpredictable events, allowing Camille to see all the colors of life. We shall follow Camille to the Greek islands, the Rio carnival and even beyond the Arctic Circle. Not until many events later, will Camille understand that it was a journey into herself along a very winding and often pitted road of love and passion.
