Tattoos in Isolation

“I am an Artist from Berkeley who has been mostly painting since the pandemic started, but in 2018 I was just making lots of doodles and small drawings. My imagery often consisted of stylized or abstracted objects and characters. In 2019 I met a dear friend and mentor Bijan in a class at UC Berkeley. He was just starting to explore the craft himself and extended his knowledge to me, teaching me how to use a machine on myself. After that, I started tattooing people in my UC Berkeley coop and the rest is history. “

I was never formally trained in illustration, painting, etc, but have been interested in art since I was little. In high school I filled up sketchbooks and painted every now and then, but was mostly into drawing. When I was 15 my friend told me about stick & pokes, so we went to the art store and bought India ink, sewing needles, and thread. I did two on myself using this method, then realized I could sneakily order the proper tattoo supplies off of Amazon and start poking myself when my mom wasn’t home. I started tattooing willing friends (my apologies and thanks to them) and other subjects at parties, all the while tattooing myself a few times a year. It wasn’t until the end of my first year of college that I felt confident enough in my work and practice to advertise it on social media and start putting my work on friends of friends.
