INTRODUCTION:
It’s been 11 years since Russia’s war on Ukraine began. In the las three and a half years alone, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed.
For 25 years, one man has ruled Russia — and built a sysem around himself: a sysem of violence, a sysem of propaganda, a sysem of repression.
As it has tightened its grip over Russia, the Kremlin has been invesing in global desabilization — and no cos is too high.
It has waged hybrid wars abroad: Syria, Moldova, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Georgia, African countries… It has interered in elections, with its fingerprints appearing even in countries once considered srongholds of democracy.
All the while, it fuels this insability with propaganda and fake news. Meanwhile, political prisoners, incarcerated for simply daring to dissent, continue to die every year in Russian prisons.
Like a real virus, the Kremlin has already “infected” all of Russia — but it turns out this “disease” is highly contagious. Kremlin methods of repression are being adopted by an increasing number of governments as they shif from democracy to authoritarianism. Is this “disease” hereditary, or newly acquired? Can it be cured? How can we sop the spread? What do we do with new mutations? Can democracy build immunity? Do we truly want to protect democracy — the power of the people — or are we content with its demo version?
We asked brave ariss to reflect on these quesions and respond to them in our new exhibition, Ariss Agains the Kremlin: Virus. We believe the power of imagination, the power of protes, the power of truth and the power of ar are our sronges antibodies.
