P
atricia Jacob got one of her votes without even opening her mouth. “I knocked on a door and this big, beautiful dog came bounding out, barking. I stood perfectly still, and the owner said, ‘You have my vote’.” Jacob, an independent, won one of two vacant Oneonta Town Board seats, joining Democrat Andrew Stammel in celebrating at the Red Caboose on Tuesday, Nov. 5. “I could hardly believe it the next morning,” she said. “I ride my bike to work, and all my neighbors were yelling ‘Whoo-hoo!’ as I rode past. I’m still excited.” An avid cyclist – she rides her bike to her job as a nurse practitioner at the Bassett Cancer Center — she hopes to take her love of outdoor sports to the board as an economic development plan. “There’s all these great breweries and placed to eat,” she said. “To connect them with a bike trail would be really exciting. I’m talking to people about grants and creative financing — we can’t expect the taxpayers to foot that bill.” She also supports the Southside water district. “It’s a big issue for the board to get that moving so that businesses who want to come in can,” she said. “It’s smart growth. We have to make it easier for businesses like Ioxus to expand.” But fracking is not in her economic toolbag. “Most of the people feel strongly that it’s not economically viable,” she said. “We have to work with road use laws and be careful about protecting the area from waste disposal, brine on the roads and wastewater.” But protecting local industry is something she intends to work with. “We would never do anything to hurt a
local business that’s hiring local people,” she said. Though she knows there’s a lot of work ahead of her, she’s taking the last few months before her term begins to relax and spend time with her grandkids, Jack, Jordan and Ryan, as well as her daughters Noelle and Chelsea, a student at SUNY.
