IN MEMORIAM Michael Hassick 68; Earned 2 Purple Hearts In Vietnam ONEONTA – Michael Howard Hassick, 68, of Oneonta, a Marine and decorated Vietnam War veteran, passed away Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Bassett Hospital. He was born on May 17, 1948 in Hancock, the son of Arvilla (Hassick) Jordan and Robert W. Jordan. He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1966. Michael served with the Marine Corps from 1967 to 1970. He was on Hill 881S during the siege of
Khe Sanh in 1968, where he earned two Purple Hearts. He was a life time member of the DVA, Military Michael Order of Hassick the Purple Heart. Also a member of the VFW and American Legion. He married his wife, Rose, on Aug. 20, 1971, in Milford Center. She prede-

He is survived by his sons, Robert (Janine) Hassick of Canajoharie and Brian (Kristina) Hassick of Milford; four grandchildren, Kyle, Marina, Logan and Josh; sister Christina (Daniel) Hromada, David (Gina) Hassick, Robin (Peter) Conte; god-daughter Brittany Conte; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by both his parents and his oldest sister, Patricia Kelsey. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta. Burial with full military honors will take place in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. In lieu of flowers please feel free to donate to the American Diabetes Association or Oneonta American Legion. Arrangements are entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Kump, 97; Operator At AT&T In NYC ONEONTA – Elizabeth P. Kump, 97, who retired to Oneonta after 30 years as an AT&T telephone operator in New York City, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at Fox Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Rahway, N.J., the daughter of Matthew and Louise (Matzelle) Kump. After a career at AT&T, she moved to Oneonta, where her sister and brother-in-law, Madeline and George Seger, reside. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and of The Third Order of the Society of St. Francis. In addition to her sister and brother-in-law, she is survived by nieces and nephews, Virginia and Phil Fireci, George and Anne Seger, Christopher Seger, Nancy Seger, Claire and Jim O’Connor; and Mary Lou and Maryellen Seger; and many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters and brothers, Louise, Mary, George and Albert; as well as a niece Madlyn. A funeral mass was held Tuesday, Oct. 18, at St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with Rev. David Mickiewicz, officiating.
Joanne I. Puylara-Boyd, 65; Worked For Years At Father’s Gallin Jewelry ONEONTA – Joanne I. Puylara-Boyd, 65, who was involved for years in managing her father’s Galinn’s Jewelry Store in downtown Oneonta, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016 at her home. She was born May 22, 1951, the daughter of Carl Angelo Puylara Sr. and Sophia (Sobers) Puylara. She was raised in Oneonta and graduated from OHS. While still in high school, she began working parttime at Galinn’s, located where the Oneonta History Center is today. Over the years, she became more involved full time in the daily operations until its closing in 1999. She is survived by her loving and devoted
husband, Lloyd Boyd Jr., whom she married on May 12, 1973; her loving four legged babies, Carluchie and Ting-Ting aka Itsie; two dear cousins, John and Kathy Sobers and Jimmy and Jeanette Puylara; and special friends, Laura and Marcia. She was predeceased by her beloved parents. A graveside service was held Monday, Oct. 17, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating. Nigel Schell, 46; Tailor In New York City WEST ONEONTA – Nigel L. Schell (Ni Ni), 46, of West Oneonta, who operating his own tailoring and clothing business in New York City, passed away suddenly on Oct. 8, 2016. Nigel was born in Atlantic City, N.J., on April 13, 1970, to Oran and Deborah Schell. He attended Atlantic City Public Schools, and received
his diploma from an Alternative Education Program in Atlantic County. At 12, Nigel became an apprentice in a tailor shop in Atlantic City, and continued to hone his skills at Mangano’s Tailor Shop in Atlantic City. He later purchased the tailor shop and became the owner/ operator of Touch of Class Tailoring.
In 2005, Nigel moved to New York, and continued in tailoring. At the time of his death he was owner/operator of Touch of Class Tailoring II, and S3 Custom T-Shirts. A funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Johnson Funeral Home in Morris. Arrangements are entrusted to tthe Johnson Funeral Home.
