Governor Cuomo Monday, July 29, signed legislation that reduces the penalty for unlawful possession of marijuana under 2 ounces from felony to violation.

The penalty: a $50 fine for less than an ounce to a maximum of $200 for one to 2 ounces. (Above that, dealing’s involved, and stronger penalties kick in.)

It also erases the records of people convicted of possessing small amounts in the past.

‘We Will Never See Likes Of Grand Old Man Again’ Editor’s Note: “Voice of Oneonta” Joseph P. Campbell’s son, Joe Jr., eulogized his dad at a memorial service Saturday, July 27, at the Oneonta Elks Lodge. This is an excerpt. The father died March 6.

Editor’s Note: “Big Chuck” D’Imperio, radio personality and author, assessed Joe Campell’s impact on Oneonta. This is an excerpt.

W

hen I joined WDOS in 1989 I was a fairly young guy, not even 40-years-old yet.

And the station was filled with young people, from sales to administrative to on-air and to management. But there were two old guys at the station that many of us will never forget. One of them was Bob Whittemore, the crusty cigar-chewing sports guy who talked a mile a minute and knew many of the great baseball players on a first name basis.

And the other “old guy” was Joe Campbell. Having been around both of these legendary figures in radio, and me having never spent a minute in a broadcast booth, well, let’s just say that I learned at CHUCK the feet of giants.

D’IMPERIO Joe Campbell was a one of a kind in this or any other community of its size.

Everybody knew Joe, liked him, respected him and enjoyed his many talents. I remember when I started out more than 30 years ago I was nervous and not very confident of really what to do. I would stand in the studio behind Joe and watch him through the glass partition.

He was definitely old school, that is for sure. He cupped his ear when he spoke, he had a story about every singer, song and big band that he played and he had a magical rapport with all of his listeners. I watched Joe and learned from him. We all did.

Joe was one of the last true gentlemen. I never knew Joe to wear a hat, but if he did he would certainly have tipped it when greeting a lady on the street. His handshake was hearty, his laugh was infectious and his pure joy for the art of broadcasting was unlike I have ever seen before or since.

ad absolutely loved teaching, coaching, and radio broadcasting. ►“Mr. C.” taught for 38 years, mostly in sixth grade at the Greater Plains Elementary School.

Dad had the exquisite gift of making lifelong personal connections with each of his students by building on their interests. Many of those students are here with us today and kept in contact JOE with Mr. C. through CAMPBELL JR. cards and phone calls.

Dad loved this recognition, referring to teaching as the most rewarding career.

Mr. C.’s innovative use of puppets, song, and radio-drama production, including sound effects, made creative writing, social studies, and math come alive in his classroom by delighting students. Additionally he had corners in his classroom for poetry, weight lifting, and radio. Dad frequently said he was grateful to teach back in the day when teachers had more freedom.

At home, dad connected with me by bringing his sixth-grade circuit box home when I was in kindergarten and that set me on my path to MIT. When Mr. C. retired from teaching in 1991, he asked himself, “What have I done?!” and started volunteering within the district. He continued his passion by teaching adults with Joe Fioravanti and

He was a pioneer in weight training, when it was considered taboo, and won the Mr. Catskill bodybuilding title. He coached my brother to a national bodybuilding championship.

Dad was an avid boxer, back when it was the #2 sport in America after baseball, and trained under his mentor, Carl Delberta, a gold medalist, a professional boxer, and the founder of the Oneonta Boys & Girls Club.

His friend and training partner, Private Harry Georgeson (The Golden Greek), gave Dad his boxing gloves when Dad

went to fight in World War II; Dad promised he would keep training and went on to box in the Army.

At OHS, he coached football for many years and enjoyed taking the team out on “fun runs” – he was in excellent shape, they barely kept up with him when he was three times their age, although he wasn’t wearing heavy football pads! ►“The Grand Old Man of Radio” had an incredible 50 years on the air on WDOS Radio, 1952-2002, with his radio program, “The Sentimental Journey.” This was the longest-running radio program in Central New York, in which he kept Big Band music alive in Otsego County and beyond.

Accidents Will Happen...

ell, of course they will, if you mean by accident a sudden, undesirable event – one that might have been prevented by closer attention.

“Damn, why didn’t I see that coming?” That’s our common reaction to a minor accident, a fender-bender, maybe. But if the accident’s a more serious one, our response may well be guilt, recriminations, fear of consequences.

“You know kids play ball along this block! You’ve seen them run out from between parked cars! Why weren’t you on the watch for it?”

• In some ways, the worst accidents are the ones we cause to ourselves – because of carelessness, laziness, distraction. Here’s an example from my own recent black-and-blue history: I had been up in the night, as old men must, and was about to sit back

down on my bed.

Feeling dizzy, I reached out to stabilize myself and grabbed at the back of a chair. It was my desk chair, built to swivel in a full circle. It did, taking me with it, JIM throwing me to ATWELL floor. Then, in a further outrage, it threw its full weight, about 50 pounds, on top of me.

Mind you, my friendly, comfortable chair, on which I’d sat, seat to seat, for hundreds of hours writing!

I knew at once I was hurt. It turned out that three ribs on my right side had been cleanly broken and now were causing pain so acute that I was a half hour getting from under that traitor chair.

ccordingly, I ended up on the floor, asleep or otherwise unconscious, till morn’s first light awoke me.

My dear Anne, I should add, was up in Toronto on an important family trip.

The cat and dog were with me, but they could offer only moral support of licks and nuzzling.

• There was, of course, my recently bought super watch, which could pinpoint the exact location of an inert body and summon help from all directions. But the super watch, though within my sight, was out of my reach on my desk. It was recharging itself for an impending crisis like this present one.

Vision – “We maintain there is nothing in the study or practice of medicine to unsex the sexes; nothing unwomanly, or un-Christian in responding to the calls of suffering humanity; that it is truly woman’s nature and province to practice the healing art; that it is a necessity of the age to have well-qualified female medical practitioners; that gentlemen physicians themselves have complimented us by requesting our assistance in treating the wives, daughters and patients, in cases where their innate modesty and refinement of character have prevented and excluded knowledge essential for the proper treatment of disease.”

125 Years Ago

Brakeman Killed – Peter Tigue, head brakeman on Conductor Flannigan’s train on the D. & H., met with a horrible death last Thursday morning at Cobleskill. He was unmarried and boarded in Oneonta. The crew had been taking on cars, and owing no doubt to the darkness he stepped from the end of the car to the ground, thinking that another car was attached. He probably died almost instantly as his body was completely severed just above the hips, he having fallen across one rail.

Portlandville – Last week Mr. Aaron Wilber met with what might have been a very serious accident. His hay fork failed to dump, and in trying to loosen it, the hay, about 500 pounds, dropped upon him, crushing him to the load. He is doing well.

100 Years Ago

A woman’s brain reaches its greatest weight about the age of 25, while in the case of a man, this does not occur until ten years later. This explains the assertion that a woman at the age of 21 is in a better posi-

Dogs of War – On July 28, 1838, General Zachary Taylor, afterward President of the United States, requested the government to furnish him bloodhounds to be used in hunting the Seminole Indians of Florida. He was furnished with the dogs.

Education always helps. The success of the unlettered man is often argued to show that men do not need education. In special cases the truth may seem to be conclusive. But did you ever stop to inquire what the fellow might have become had he added education to his natural talents? He has succeeded in spite of a handicap and not because of it.

Less than 17 months after it opened the Sav-A-Lot grocery store in Oneonta is closing. Store manager Jeff Allen said executives from Houchens Industries, Inc. the Kentucky-based firm that owns the store informed him and his fourteen employees last week of plans to shut down. The Oneonta Sav-A-Lot is located in the Ames Plaza at the corner of Chestnut Street and Winney Hill Road. It opened in April 1998 in the building formerly home to a Grand Union grocery store. Houchens Industries Inc. owns or operates more than 200 grocery and convenience stores in 11 states and is ranked among the top 500 private businesses in the U.S., according to Forbes.

80 Years Ago

Mrs. Willard E. Moxley of 16 Fifth Street, Oneonta, has a hobby of collecting pictures of twins. Mrs. Moxley started July 12, 1938 compiling a scrapbook of pictures of twins, and she now has snapshots or photographs of 91 pairs. In some cases she has more than one picture of the same twins, showing them at different ages. In another part of her scrapbook she has newspaper pictures of 128 pairs of twins, many of them accompanied by descriptive clippings.

Among these views are pictures showing from five to ten pairs of twins enrolled at the same school. Her next door neighbor, Mrs. George W, Wright of 18 Fifth Street, was credited by Mrs. Mrs. Moxley with having given her much encouragement and assistance in this hobby. In the collection are pictures of 18 sets of twins who live in Oneonta, or who formerly resided here.

The Cooperstown Village Board, and its newest trustee, MacGuire Benton, should be congratulated for agreeing to be – it appears – the first Upstate New York municipality to trumpet acceptance by unanimously voting to fly the Pride Flag on Village Hall next June, which is Pride Month.

If the First Amendment means nothing else, it’s live and let live.

That said, the trustees would be wise to place their action in the context of a defensible policy.

some,” the freshman trustee also suggested how things might get sticky: “There are flags that are indisputably racist, indisputably bigoted and don’t reflect the values of the majority of Cooperstown. I certainly wouldn’t support that.”

Certainly, but lacking a policy, does the Village Board have the standing to block any request that is less than “indisputable??

For instance, what if the local chapter of the National Right to Life petitions to fly its flag at 22 Main? Or NARAL, the National Abortion Rights League?

What if one religious denomination seeks to have a flag hoisted? Does the Village Board have the standing to say no? Then what about other religions, represented in the village or not, or the irreligious?

The Village Board shouldn’t be deciding whose First Amendments Rights get precedence. By trying to do so, is it opening itself – and, thus, taxpayers – to the possibility of expensive legal challenge?

Of course – “fingers crossed” – none of that may ever happen. But is “fingers crossed” a basis for good governance?

People Want To Live In Village. There’s Room

I

am passionate about housing. In fact, I write this as I prepare to travel to Honduras to participate in a program called Mi Casa, which provides new or renovated houses for Hondurans who do not have the resources to obtain adequate housing themselves.

Having a place to call home is a fundamental component of personal identity and a critical factor in feeling both CINDY comfortable and FALK secure.

In Cooperstown, as community members shared ideas for the new Comprehensive Plan, which was approved in 2016, the topic of housing came up repeatedly.

Year-’round rentals are hard to find in Cooperstown, a fact my family learned all too well when we bounced between three different rentals in the course of a year when we first moved to the village.

Apartments are at a premium, especially for those with limited incomes. And

there are very few places that are accessible to those who find stairs difficult or impossible to navigate.

• If we look back at historical data, we find that in 1930 there were 2,909 people living in the Village of Cooperstown. In 2010, the last year a census was conducted, there were just 1,852. What caused a more than 36 percent decrease in population?

We know that the village has not changed in size, but we can also see that there are not a lot of new houses (with a few notable exceptions after World War II, i.e. Walnut Street, Lakeland Shores). Couple that with the fact that the birth rate has gone down and life expectancy has gone up, and on average we find fewer people living in each house.

We also know that people rarely take in boarders, a once common practice, and boarding houses are a thing of the past. At the same time, second homes, which sit empty a good portion of

the year, are more common in the village. Overall, the human density in the village has decreased, leading to a decrease in population.

• Nationally, the benefits of population density have become hot topics.

As we consider climate change, it is clear that communities where living, working, shopping, and recreation all happen in the same general area foster less dependence on automobiles, and therefore less fossil-fuel consumption.

As we consider economic development, we know businesses depend on residents who are customers as well as employees. If we want businesses that support residents, there must be many

residents to support those businesses.

Community groups also depend on people who live locally to volunteer time and talent, something often lacking today.

• Yet while it turns out that Cooperstown’s population has been on the decline for decades, people actually do want to live here, something that makes Cooperstown stand out among many Upstate communities.

FALK: 2,909 Lived In Cooperstown; 1,769 Do Today. More Want To FALK/From A5 every day. It turns out that many would prefer to live in the village if they could find housing that suited their needs at a reasonable price point.

The solution to housing issues in Cooperstown is complex.

One component is to make sure our zoning does not inhibit new development, whether that means constructing a whole new building or rethinking how space within an existing large single-family house is utilized.

At one time, zoning was used in communities throughout the United States to promote suburban style single-family houses

separated from other types of places such as shopping centers or office complexes, which one had to drive to. The pendulum has shifted to recognize the benefits of communities such as Cooperstown that are walkable and foster a variety of uses.

• Since June 2018, a working group consisting of the mayor, zoning enforcement officer, and representatives from the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historic Preservation & Architectural Review Board, the trustees’ Economic Development & Sustainability Committee, and Bassett Hospital has been meeting

to develop a proposal for changes to the zoning law.

A draft was recently presented to the Board of Trustees and forwarded to the Planning Board for its review.

The proposal allows additional types of housing (duplexes, multi-family) in residential zoning districts and in the business district by right or by special-use permit, and it limits lot coverage rather than setting a minimum square footage requirement per housing unit.

It also updates zoning terminology, renaming “accessory apartments” “accessory dwelling units” in keeping with national

trends. And it recognizes local realities, redefining setback requirements in terms of lot size and the locations of existing buildings.

• Changes to zoning are no cure all.

Housing availability is affected by market forces, and our tourist economy is tied to housing shortages and to rental rates, in season and out of season.

Before thinking about changing zoning rules regarding apartments, the village had to tighten up the regulations regarding short-term rentals to ensure that any new apartments actually would be available for year-round tenants.

D’IMPERIO: Campbell’s Footprint Bigger Than Most D’IMPERIO/From A4 Joe left a big mark on this community. Some people do that, you know – mostly the older folks who we remember in an instant with a smile and a nod. People like Sam Nader who also left big footprints all over the city.

And Jim Konstanty, Gene Bettiol and Clyde Wright, Dick Miller and the Bresee’s men, and too many others to even mention. Other people left their marks in smaller yet no less significant ways in the City of the Hills, people like Jack Stahl tickling the ivories or even dear Muriel Ross serving up a smile and a cup of coffee at the Health Bar. These are our small town legends.

But Joe’s legacy is different. It is a sweeping,

multi-generational impact that perhaps this city has never seen.

Thousands of young people have learned life lessons from Mr. C, one of the most beloved teachers in OHS history. Hundreds of young men have learned the hard lessons of integrity and discipline from the days when Coach Campbell pushed them on the playing fields of Oneonta. And how many have been entertained by his unique and mythic “Sentimental Journey,” a show than ran on radio for a historic 50 years at WDOS? Well, we will never know that number for sure. But they are out there.

The grandparents who tuned in to hear the Big Band music of their youth. The young couples who listened

to Joe’s stories of happenings around Oneonta. The student athletes who would tune in to maybe, just maybe, hear their name called out as Joe read one of his uncountable local sports stories.

Yes, the numbers of people that Joe touched via radio is unknown, but is clearly massive.

It has been my pleasure to know Joe Campbell and I will cherish every single moment I had with him both on the air and off, whether sipping a beer with him in his basement museum at 18 Grand St., or over a Monday afternoon plate of spaghetti with Joe and the boys at the Sixth Ward Athletic Club.

He blessed our fair city with his presence and his voice.

I dare say we will never see the likes of the Grand Old

Man ever again.

I remember how “oldfashioned” Joe’s sign off from his “Sentimental Journey” was each Saturday.

It never changed for over 50 years. I used to think it was kind of corny, really. But looking back now I think the words echo almost everything that we came to know about Joe. And they seem almost perfect.

At 11:57 a.m. every Saturday for two generations of listeners, The Grand Old Man would cup his ear and sign off with these words: “And so, my dear friends, I close by saying … let the music play as long as there’s a song to sing.

And I, yes I, will stay younger than spring.”

Rest in peace, Joe Campbell.

ATWELL: Accidents Can Happen; Here’s A Beauty ATWELL/From A4 Accordingly, I ended up on the floor, asleep or otherwise unconscious, till morn’s first light awoke me. That’s when I phoned my treasured neighbor Ralph Snell, who called the emergency squad. And they hauled me off to Mother Bassett.

• At the Emergency Room, they quickly decided that I needed to be admitted as a patient. The concern was that one of those broken ribs might snag the adjacent lung and cause fatal damage. Or, alternatively, that my shallow breathing because of pain might bring on pneumonia, “the old man’s friend.”

After a week in their care, the Bassett folks, bless them, were reluctant to let go of me. And so I was shunted down to Cooperstown Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing.

Now, listen to me carefully.

Cooperstown Center has had a checkered history. But I want you to know that, under present management, they are operating firing smoothly on all cylinders. I can’t imagine finer care by a more attentive staff than I experienced there.

The place is squeaky clean, the food varied and delicious, the linen is changed and bathrooms cleaned daily. Hurray for everyone running the place, from top to bottom.

I’m back home now, as is my dear Anne. And I’m back to spending hours in my front porch’s breezy shadows. (Ceiling fan, you see.)

I’m not on the watch for accidents but certainly aware of sudden stops just out front when traffic backs up down at the stop sign just two doors below us.

So far, so good. But I know the need for constant attentiveness. I haven’t forgotten that ingrate swivel chair. Which, by the way, no longer lives here.

The reality is that Cooperstown can support and has supported more residents, and that there are people who would love to live in the village. Cooperstown is a great place to raise children and to age in place.

Ensuring zoning laws reflect current thoughts on the benefits of compact communities is a first step in recognizing that we all benefit from a greater diversity of housing options.

Cindy Falk, a professor of Material Culture at the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies, is Cooperstown’s deputy mayor.

And then one has to ask: What has she done as a voting member of the House to correct the flaws in our immigration laws and to fund the construction of better temporary housing while those immigrants are being processed. Is she aware that President Obama deported more illegal immigrants than president Trump has to date?

You see, it’s not about the issues or playing fair.

It’s about the fact the President won the election and Hillary lost. The left will do anything to change the results of that election before the 2020 election. Do you recall when, during the Presidential debates, Hillary asked candidate Trump if he would abide by the election results if he lost? When the shoe was on the other foot, she clearly hasn’t accepted

the election results.

• Let’s take a look at exactly what the president said in his tweet. He said: “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.

Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came?

Then come back and show us how it is done.”

Read it closely. Do you find any reference to race, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, etc.? Did he say to go back to a specific country? No. Loosely translated, he said if you don’t like the greatest country in the world, please go back to the place (city, town, village, country, whatever) where things are worse than the America he is referencing to and make them better. If you can show us how to do that, we’re willing to learn from you.

IN MEMORIAM KellyAnn Wolner, 54, 30-Year Coach, Phys-Ed Teacher At Unatego Central BINGHAMTON – KellyAnn Wolner, 54, an award-winning 30-year teacher and coach at Unatego Central School, died at her home in Binghamton, on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, after an 18-month battle with colon cancer.

Born on Oct. 24, 1964, in Spain at Naval Station Rota, Kelly lived in a variety of places before her family settled in Rome.

She graduated from Westmoreland Central School in 1982 and went on to pursue her dream of

becoming a physical education teacher at Mohawk Valley Community College, earning her associate degree in physical education in 1987, and SUNY Cortland, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1989 and master’s degree in health education in 1995.

For three decades, Kelly was a physical education teacher and coach with the Unatego Central School District, as well as a New York State high school and college softball umpire.

Andrea Schleicher, 73; Retired Teacher, Oneonta UMC Member EAST MEREDITH – Andrea A. Schleicher, 73, a retired school teacher, passed away on July 26, 2019, at her home after a battle with cancer. Her family was by her side.

She was born Sept. 12, 1945, in Mount Vernon, the daughter of John Andrew and Agnes Cowan (Rawstron) Schleicher.

In 1963, Andrea graduated from A.B. Davis High School in Mount Vernon, and in 1967 received a bachelor’s degree from Framingham State College in Massachusetts. Over time, Andrea completed her master’s degree and was a teacher for the public-school district in Framingham,

retiring in 2003.

Andrea was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, and Andrea was a member Schleicher of the bell choir.

She is survived by her sister, Helen and James Varco of Harpersfield; her brother, J. Gordon and Marjorie Schleicher of Mason, Mich.; nieces and nephews, Paul, Noel, Wendy, Marcia, Andrew, Kim and James Jr. and their families.

After Week Of Freedom, 75 Buffalo Head Back To Sharon Corral BUFFALO/From A1 trampled the gate. “He’s had behavior problems, and he started jumping things. He jumped the gate and crushed it, and the others followed him.”

Since their escape, the buffalo had been seen roaming in the area of the SchoharieOtsego line – Pleasant Brook, Roseboom and Cherry Valley.

Frank Proper, Roseboom, was shaving last Saturday morning, July 27, when he saw a buffalo’s head reflected, he said.

A July 29 press release from State Police at Richfield Springs reported the herd number at 75 – 45 calves, the rest adults, including three bulls. Proper’s daughter, Lucy, who owns the farm, said she had counted at least five bulls.

“The bulls, especially the large one who surprised my dad, are aggressive,” said Lucy. “I can’t have my son or my dogs play outside because the buffalo are unpredictable and they could hurt them. They could harm my horse, sheep, and cattle.”

They also devoured the second crop of grass for hay; the family plans to use the proceeds to pay its taxes.

The Propers were out of town last Thursday, July 25, when their friends called Lucy reporting buffalo had swarmed onto her farm. They cut their vacation short and came home to find the damage to their fields and farm equipment.

At some point, Grubb said, the buffaloes scattered, making it difficult to track them down. “They were safe on the Propers’ farm,” he said.

“No one was bothering them.

But when they left, people were harassing them, and they dispersed and fragmented, hiding in the woods.”

As herd animals, they eventually sought each other out and began moving back towards the farm, where 125 others await. “They’re a tool we can use,” he said. “I call it

the ‘gravitational pull’ of the herd. If they can smell the rest of the herd and get together, if we can get them to the fence line, they’ll see the others and they’ll stay.”

But Proper is concerned that they won’t stay put. “The buffalo are at the end of mating season, and after that they’re going to divide up,” she said.

“Either the bulls are going to take females and calves with them and go their separate ways or the bulls will form a ‘bachelor group’ and go off. The bachelor group scenario is the more dangerous of the two.”

He connected people’s desire to move to America because “we’re a free country” to freedom of speech, which he believed flying the Confederate flag represents.

“I believe everyone has the right to speak. We didn’t have a problem with flying this flag until recently,” he said.

“Why can’t people fly them at their homes? It’s not hurting anybody.

“Gay people fly their flags.

Italians fly theirs outside their pizza places. Let them do it.”

Selling the Confederate flag at local county fairs became controversial in 2015, after a gunman killed nine blacks in the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston S.C. That July, the Otsego County fair banned the sale and exhibiting of the flag in that year’s event.

After 2015, vendors were given a pass as long as the Stars & Bars weren’t prominently displayed.

That was the case at Schroener’s booth: Except for a single flag-adorned baseball cap out front, the Confederate flags were folded on a table in back, along with the other flags he was selling.

They included the Stars & Stripes and military flags, as well as the “Don’t Tread On Me” banner that dates back to the American Revolution.

Schroener said he had seen an increase in Confederate flag sales over the past two years.

“People are proud of it, proud of their family and their heritage,” he said. “We also are seeing more and more people buying both the rebel flag and the American flag together.”

Schoener was one of only two vendors who could be found selling Stars & Bars merchandise Tuesday, July 30,

the fair’s opening day. The other vendor declined to talk about it.

Fair Manager Lisa Jones also declined to discuss the fair’s official policy.

In the flag, Schroener sees both the spirit to question and to accept.

“I don’t agree what we did to the black people, and the more I read about it the more it disgusts me,” he said. “I have two beautiful grandchildren.

One is Hispanic and one native Indian. There is more people of color in this country than ever before and I think it’s awesome! That is how it should be!”

“But Southerners are our neighbors, just like all Americans, and we have to love them,” Schroener added.

His 16-year-old son Cameron, sitting next to him, agreed. “If I lived back then and I was a slave, I would hate the rebel flag, too,” he said.

“There’s wasn’t a lot of discussion,” said Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh in announcing the vote. “Someone said they would have liked a little more background information. Most of us basically knew the topic and supported it.”

The measure is freshman Trustee MacGuire Benton’s first resolution, and he said “it was wonderful to introduce a bill, and have six votes for it and the mayor’s.”

A few meetings ago, Benton said, it was mentioned “some people didn’t feel welcome in this area, on a racial basis, but also on the basis of sexual orientation. I wanted to see what concrete steps Cooperstown would take to let people know LGBTQ people are welcome here.”

The mayor said Benton raised the possibility of flying the Pride Flag with her a few months ago, and she encouraged him to pursue it. She said the measure is in line with trustee actions over the past couple of years positioning the village as an accepting community, resolutions that date back to December 2016.

“We just updated our resolution,” she said, “and we have ordered … some signs that we are a ‘welcoming community,’ which will go on the entrances to the village. I don’t think it’s out of line with any sentiments that we’ve been presented with in the community.”

She said there is no policy governing the placement of flags on Village Hall. While this is a novel step, she did recall raising the “Tree City” flag on Arbor Day one year.

For his part, Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig said the issue has not arisen in the City of the Hills. If approached, he said, he’d be happy to take a proposal to follow Cooperstown’s suit to Common Council. “Personally, I’d be happy to do so,” he said.

The Rainbow Flag has been the standard of the LGBTQ movement; the Pride Flag goes a step further, adding a triangle of lines signifying additional gender and sexual identities.

Advised another trustee is considering asking that the POW-MIA flag be flown over Village Hall, Benton said, “that’s awesome.”

The idea is to raise public awareness, the trustee said.

“It’s really our job. I certainly support it. We have a Village Hall with plenty of room to raise the flags,” he said.

continued to hike, including doing three “14ers” – the mountains in Colorado with elevations of at least 14,000 feet – in two days.

She left for the trip on Wednesday, July 17, and began the climb on Friday, July 19, reaching the summit in five days.

“I chose to do a solo trek because I wanted to do it at my pace,” she said. “But you have to have a guide to hike Kilimanjaro.”

In the days leading up to the summit, the conditions were treacherous. “It was harder than I anticipated,” she said. “There was a lot of loose gravel, mud and ice, so I was very cautious because I did not want to get injured before the summit.”

The treks to the summit involved a lot of altitude gains and losses, which caused sickness among fellow travelers. “I don’t mind climbing up but the downhills were hard,” she said.

“Others that were trekking had headaches, vomiting and other stomach issues. Many were taking oxygen, and there were many helicopter evacuations.”

She started for the summit at midnight. “I was fatigued on the way up,” she said. “But my guide kept me going.”

And she was rewarded for her effort. “I made the first summit at Stella Point at sunrise,” she said. “It was

beautiful.”

It was only 220 meters to Uhuru Peak, but it took her another hour to reach it. “It was crazy to me that it took seven hours to go three miles,” she said. “But it was at 19,000 feet.”

During her hike, Morris met other hikers, guides and area natives. “I met many people along the way from all over the world,” she said. “It is wonderful how we came to support one another even with language barriers - we build a community over a common purpose! I am still processing the trip but I am struck by the kindness of my team and the people of Tanzania.”

And if she goes again, maybe she won’t go alone.

“The trek covered rainforest, desert, alpine forest and volcanic terrain,” she said. “I wish I had a geologist with me!”
