a huge undertaking that required 200,000 cubic feet of fill? Or of the Otsego & Herkimer Railroad? Or of 1816, the year without a summer? When his facts were challenge, “Ed� told the gathering, he was undeterred: He was an “impressionist,� capturing the mood, tone, color “and the heart and soul of Oneonta as I saw it, good and bad.� The columns, many written at the old Diana Restaurant, were collected in four volumes, published during the 1960s. A fifth volume, with a Don Sherwood drawing of Ed Moore on the cover, was published by the Greater Oneonta Historical Society and is still available for sale at the History Center, 183 Main. Throughout his life, he
remained active in the Vets’ Club, and could often be found in the bar there. Back in his own persona, Brenner remembered pulling Moore out of a snow drift outside the Chestnut Street clubhouse, where he had ended up head first trying to pull another pal, SUNY Oneonta history prof Bert Horton, out of the same drift. At one point in the ‘60s, when he wrote a rousing campaign speech for Republican Cyrus Wright, who was challenging incumbent Democrat Sam Stratton for Congress, the Binghamton Press tried to lure him away. Moore considered it, but as his alter-ego recounted it, “I just wanted to be someone who chronicled my community.� He died on May 3, 1978, age 82.
