ALLISON SAINTY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE P O R T F O L I O

ALLISON SAINTY

4TH YEAR STUDENT OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

I’ve had a passion for design for as long as I can remember architecture, graphic design, typography and photography have infiltrated my life from a young age Landscape architecture has been the opportunity to combine my passion for design together with my interest in our world. The way landscapes shape experiences and memories excites me my memories of homes past and travels taken are all linked to the landscapes I have experienced them in. As a student, I look forward to a lifetime of creating landscapes for people to enjoy, share, and make memories in - together.

This portfolio is a progression of my design journey.

COCKATOO ISLAND DESIGN STUDIO 2: DESIGN PROCESS This studio required us to develop ideas through making using models and word generators to explore and understand different spatial conditions. The final submission was to feature a informative and evocative montage of our conceptual landscape.

MY VISION FOR THIS PROJECT... An industrial forest: an extension of the already existing industrial relics, aiming to highlight feelings of separation from the city and give emphasis and impact to the expansive city views. “...as I moved about, the views changed, teased me, lured me further inside to discover what really lay beyond this grove.”

GLENBROOK PRECINCT DESIGN STUDIO 4: DESIGN RESOLUTION AND DOCUMENTATION This project asked us to redesign the Glenbrook Precinct in the Blue Mountains - A place where environmental principles are crucial. Once the design process was complete, a full set of documentation drawings and specifications were produced. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT

STUDIO

MY VISION FOR THIS PROJECT... My redesign focussed heavily on site analysis and user needs, with the reorganisation and revitalisation of natural landscapes a high priority. Minimising user conflicts, improving facilities, increasing canopy cover, providing new walking tracks and the installation of interpretive wayfinding devices were all included in my design response.

SYDNEY SQUARE DESIGN STUDIO 5: SITE PLANNING Sydney Square was to be redesigned in light of the George St revitalisation and Light Rail projects. We also needed to place a kiosk style building within the square, and demonstrate how program can guide the square’s transformation.

MY VISION FOR THIS PROJECT... I transformed Sydney Square into a “Cultural Hub”. The Culture Centre kiosk provides information about events, includes spaces for art displays and pop-up events, and activates the space during both day and night. The aim is to give Sydney Square a unique identity and purpose, providing a place where artists and art can become a permanent part of the city’s fabric.

LINDFIELD GREEN DESIGN STUDIO 6: DESIGN WITH A COMPLEX PROGRAM A council carpark in Lindfield is to be moved underground, with a new ‘village green’ developed on structure above. A pavilion was also to be located within the green, providing carpark access and public amenities. Council also desired water play and space for events to be included within the design response.

MY VISION FOR THIS PROJECT... Maximising the green space and utilising sustainability principles lead me to place the pavilion under a sloped lawn of usable green space. The new Village Green also provides for water play, outdoor cinema and market events, a sensory garden, and co-ordinates access between the green and new carpark below.

THE BAYS PRECINCT DESIGN STUDIO 7: URBAN DESIGN The Bays Precinct is Sydney’s largest urban revitalisation project of recent times. Working in teams of four, we needed to provide an urban design masterplan which provided housing, infrastructure, jobs, climate resilience and economic and social benefits.

MY VISION FOR THIS PROJECT... Our vision for the site was to focus on providing a scaffold on which communities could prosper. Public open spaces and social facilities was key to our proposal. My personal input focused on livability and I worked on the design of streets, open spaces and built form which responded to solar access, allowed for walkability and would improve the every day lives of the people who lived there. We also recognised the importance of public open space and public waterfront access.

URBAN DESIGN SEMINAR This project required us to research the development of a city. Through a visual medium, we were to describe the urban form and transformations of the city in relation to its landscape conditions.

MY VISION FOR THIS PROJECT... My chosen city for this research assignment was Dublin, Ireland. I focussed on the changes not only occurring within the built urban form of the city, but also mapped the changes which occurred in Dublin Bay due to both natural process and human influences.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

MODEL MAKING The way paper folds, textures compliment and forms take shape intrigue me. Models are an important part of the design process, from sketch and conceptual development through to representing finished projects in three-dimensional form to help convey spatial ideas.

SAMPLES OF MY MODELS The following pages show samples of both my conceptual models created to help explore possibilities through the design process, along with finished presentation models built for final studio presentations.

TRAVEL & LANDSCAPES PHOTOGRAPHY I have been interested in photography from a young age. Composition, framing and landscapes are my passion, along with the ability to record memories from my travels.

TRAVEL Travel can be life-changing. For me, my life changed in 2O1O, with a backpacking stint lasting 5 months. It spurred on my love for meeting and sharing with people, my desire to find the personality of a city, and fondness for endless wanders. I love discovering more about your surroundings by exploring, getting lost and by just sitting and watching people enjoy their world.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF GRAPHIC DESIGN The Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design focussed on print, packaging and publishing methods. I enjoy typography, layouts and print material, and love finishing projects with handmade processes to give a personal touch.
