The researchers understand that ports are fundamentally economic drivers, but they also see new dredging projects as a chance for them to build their social licence by undertaking ecological improvements in the process of dealing with necessary dredging. “We know how to use dredging to reduce flood risks,” Davis says, by way of example. “However, it currently takes a lot of money to handle sediment in just the right way for this purpose, and rarely links up with established dredging windows.”

At smaller U.S. ports, the need to find ways to reduce dredging costs is imperative with the funding allotted for this purpose always being debated. Without this federal assistance, some of these ports could face shutdown.
