SUMMER MAKEOVER: EVANS ELEMENTARY’S RENOVATION
WRITTEN BY DAVID HICKS, CHIEF COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER
The start of a new school year is always an exciting time, but for the students, teachers, and staff at Evans Elementary, this year’s return was nothing short of breathtaking. Over the summer, Evans Elementary underwent a remarkable renovation that transformed the school into a vibrant learning environment.
Students and parents had a chance to see the new renovations for the first time during the “Meet the Teacher” event in August. The reaction was similar for most who entered the building: their jaws dropped. The campus now sports a purple and gray color scheme to match the school’s logo, and spaces have been updated to meet current learning styles. Even older siblings who no longer attend Evans had a chance to see the updated campus and were shocked at the renovation.
Principal Justin Preston expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “This renovation not only gives kids a chance to build connections and strengthen relationships but also provides them with a space to collaborate and problem- solve in high-performing teams. I’m a big believer in the idea that the environment impacts your performance, and working in an open, beautiful space can help drive these outcomes for students and teachers alike.”
One of the key highlights of the renovation is the creation of dedicated collaborative spaces throughout the school. Erica Butler, a 4th grade math and science teacher who’s been with Evans since 2013, shared her excitement, saying, “Last year, I had to huddle students in awkward spaces to encourage collaboration, but now we have the space, materials, and opportunity to enhance collaboration. It encourages students to try new things, get out of their seats, and work together.”
The renovation also introduced flexible furniture that allows for easy mixed grouping and collaborative movement. Butler emphasized how this furniture promotes life skills and confidencebuilding, explaining, “These spaces provide an experience of working out problems together and building confidence in front of their peers.”
One significant change is the addition of designated areas for each grade level while still allowing all students to use the collaborative spaces. This flexibility promotes interaction among students of different ages, fostering a sense of unity within the school community.
But don’t just take the word of campus staff. Three Evans 6th-graders, Stella,
Roy, and Harper, provided their unique perspective on the campus renovation. Stella mentioned the refreshing change in the school’s appearance, while Roy appreciated the open and spacious feel of the new school. Harper highlighted how the renovation has positively impacted collaboration and flexibility in their learning spaces.
When asked about their parents’ reactions, Harper shared that her parents see the new building as an opportunity for students of different grades to interact and learn from each other. Roy’s parents likened the school to an office where people can work together, emphasizing the open and collaborative environment. Stella’s family was amazed at how different the school now looks and feels compared to last school year.
The students also discussed their favorite features of the renovated school. Harper mentioned the numerous collaborative spaces, while Roy appreciated the more spacious environment. Stella was particularly excited about the library’s transformation into a central hub of the school.
The new furniture in the school has been a game-changer for the students. Roy explained how it allows him and his classmates to adapt their learning environment to their needs, whether working independently, in small groups, or larger teams. Stella and Harper emphasized the improvement it provides in terms of seating and collaborative work.
The students also emphasized the importance of spaces outside the traditional classroom setting. These spaces encourage creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, preparing students for real-world challenges.
As you walk through the doors of Evans Elementary, Roy explains that you can’t help but feel the “Evans spirit” that now permeates the school. This spirit is characterized by a sense of unity, pride, and a commitment to fostering a positive learning environment. It’s a spirit that sets the tone for a successful school year.
To the dedicated individuals who helped provide the resources necessary to renovate the Evans campus, including the community members who voted to approve the 2020 bond election, the students have a heartfelt message: “Thank you!” As Harper aptly put it, “It’s been the best start to a school year!”
Evans Elementary’s transformation is a testament to the power of community support, innovative design, and a commitment to providing the best educational experience for our students.
“The future is bright for Evans Elementary,” said Preston, “and can’t wait to see the incredible achievements that will take place within these newly revitalized walls.”
