By Lily Miller, Communications Manager On Friday, February 26, and Saturday, February 27, Allen-Stevenson boys impressed during a debate scrimmage with students from Horace Mann. The debate topics were broken down into the three categories of adolescence, media, and science – all very salient topics to these young debaters! A-S alumni Jordan Wasserberger ’19, Jack Klein ’18, and Zachary Kurtz ’20 have been working alongside a group of high schoolers from Horace Mann to train younger students on the fundamentals of parliamentary debate every Tuesday afternoon. These skilled instructors are creating a new generation of fervent debaters by imparting their skill and passion for debate! Their hard work paid off! During the debate, our boys were smart, thoughtful and compelling in their well-reasoned arguments. Many boys deepened their classroom learning by connecting it to these real-life, relevant debate topics.

One eighth grader leveraged his ethics class as he described how his argument was based on utilitarianism. A seventh grader explained how the history of racially biased medical treatment has consequences for the current conversation about vaccine resistance. Their professional poise and sportsmanship were applaudable along with their ease in bringing in content from their academic classes to support their arguments, connecting their learning across disciplines to deepen their understanding of the concepts at play.
