anet Rosenberg & Studio Inc. (JRS) was selected in 2008 to utilise the framework established in the Market Place Strategic Urban Design Plan to design and implement a new Civic Square for the City of Guelph, Ontario. Guelph, located northwest of Toronto, has been experiencing a rapid growth in population and an increasing trend towards urban living. The city had adopted a new mentality towards its changing nature, and the studio’s challenge was to present and facilitate that change to the public through the design of a quality public square and streetscape capable of enriching the civic experience of the downtown area. The two primary activities of the square are the water feature in the warmer months and the ice rink in the colder months. After producing several conceptual options, a final design was chosen. It features a large (8,500 square feet) shallow oval water feature that reflects the historic winter fair wall of city hall and seven custom perforated
