What is Bicycle Gearing? The rate at which the rider pedals, and the rate at which the drive wheel turns determine the speed of the bicycle and this aspect of a bicycle drive train is termed as bicycle gearing. The idea behind multiple gears on a bicycle is to let you change the distance that the bicycle moves forward with each pedal stroke.

Basically there are two gears – Lower & Higher Both the gears are used in different situations and require different way of handling. For a bicycle to travel at the same speed, the rider has to pedal faster using less force if he is using a lower gear. Conversely, if the rider is using a higher gear he needs to exert greater force to gain higher speed.

Types of Gear Shifters: The most common gear shifters are of two types:  Grip Shifter  Trigger Shifter 1. Grip Shifter:

This type of shifting has no lever. It is a very simple to handle. You can shift by twisting a section of the grip forward or backward, depending on whether you want a harder or easier gear.

2. Trigger Shifter:

The trigger shifter has two triggers beside each handlebar grip. On the left trigger shifter, the small trigger shifts to a smaller chain ring, for an easier gear. The bigger shifter will shift up to a bigger chain ring, for a harder gear.

On the right trigger shifter, the little trigger shifts to a smaller cog, which gives you a harder gear. The bigger shifter will shift up to a bigger cog, which gives you an easier gear.
