Pluribus

As summer begins to recede into autumn, it’s time for another edition of TV Week’s annual Fall Preview issue, dedicated to delivering all the scoop on what’s coming up on broadcast, cable and streaming. This fall’s mostanticipated new show is also its most mysterious: Pluribus, a top-secret series from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan. The latter series’ Rhea Seehorn stars as “the most miserable person on Earth,” who “must save the world from happiness.” pg 53

Mr. Scorsese

Director of classic films such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and numerous others, Martin Scorsese boasts a cinematic legacy like no other. Over the course of five episodes, this docuseries brings viewers an in-depth look at the life and career of the man behind the movies.

Adventuring with Whole Foods

Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.

Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.

A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

Streaming leads fall TV season

Back in June, a pretty major milestone was reached: viewership of streaming, for the first time ever, surpassed that of broadcast and cable television combined.

While it may have gone unnoticed, that shift has been evident in fall programming for the past few years, and is even more apparent this year. As you’ll see in the 2025 edition of TV Week’s annual Fall Preview issue, the new offerings from broadcast television are not only few and far between, they’re also significantly less ambitious than those offered on streaming platforms.

For example, two high-profile spinoffs of beloved network TV shows won’t be seen on the networks where the originals aired, but on streaming services (NCIS: Tony & Ziva can be viewed on Paramount+, while The Officespawned The Paper arrives on Peacock — although, because Peacock isn’t available in Canada, will air here on Showcase).

Among the few freshman shows coming to network television are DMV, a CBS workplace comedy set in the Department of Motor Vehicles; an NBC reality series seeking top marketers, hosted by Jimmy Fallon; a CBS competition for country singers, The Road; and a few spinoffs, including 9-1-1:

Nashville (spawned from 9-1-1 ), Boston Blue (Blue Bloods), Sheriff Country (Fire Country) and . . . well, that’s pretty much it. Streaming, on the other hand, offers up a cornucopia of innovative and exciting new series. Among the many are Prime Video’s The Girlfriend, a taut psychological thriller starring Robin Wright); Netflix’s Black Rabbit, set within Manhattan’s restaurant scene, starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman; and Pluribus, the top-secret new Apple TV+ project from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, starring Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn. Meanwhile, HBO serves up Task, a crime thriller from the creator of Mare of Easttown, and a horror series inspired by Stephen King’s IT

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. There’s an awful lot to unpack in a new fall TV season that truly has something for everyone.

THE RUNAROUNDS

This teen drama from Outer Banks co-creator Jonas Pate casts real-life musicians as a group of recent high school grads in Wilmington, North Carolina, who form a rock band. “Over the course of one unforgettable summer, they throw themselves into the pursuit of their big break — falling in love, getting into trouble and building the kind of bonds that feel like family along the way,” notes the synopsis for the series, which features original music and “captures the rush of risking everything at the edge of adulthood to chase your dreams.”

For Pate, the series focuses on the inherent risks of creativity, and the dedication required to succeed at it. “If you do anything artistic, it is kind of like jumping off a cliff — your only reasonable expectation and training is poverty and crushing defeat,” Pate told Wilmington’s Port City Daily. “So you really have to be willing to do it. You have to be a little insane. And young people make that choice without really understanding the life consequences of that until they’re older. And that’s the spirit of that — that willingness to do it with a bunch of your best friends. That’s my favourite thing about The Runarounds.”

PREMIERED SEPTEMBER 1, PRIME VIDEO

NCIS: Tony & Ziva

If ever there was a spinoff that needed no introduction, it’s NCIS: Tony & Ziva, following the exploits of former NCIS fan favourites Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, with Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo reviving their beloved roles. The new series finds the couple that fans nicknamed “Tiva” now estranged, co-parenting their young daughter, Tali, while living in Paris. When Tony’s security company is attacked, they’re forced to go on the run as they “try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.”

In a joint statement, the stars promised fans they could expect “an actionpacked rollercoaster fuelled by love, danger, tears and laughter.” Meanwhile, Weatherly confirmed that jumping back into his old NCIS role was like riding the proverbial bike. “It was surprising how Cote and I just fell into this new place with our characters. Informed by the past, illuminated by the present and trying to see a future together,” he said. “These characters are on the adventure of a lifetime. And hopefully, so is the viewer.”

PREMIERED SEPTEMBER 4, PARAMOUNT+

The Paper

A sequel of sorts to The Office, Greg Daniels’ mockumentary features the same camera crew that embedded with Michael Scott and the Dunder Mifflin gang as they film a new doc about the Toledo Truth Teller, a historic Midwestern newspaper on the brink of extinction. OG Office cast member Oscar Nuñez reprises his role, now working as the newspaper’s accountant. Domhnall Gleeson stars as the idealistic new editor-in-chief, with the paper’s staff including Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key and White Lotus standout Sabrina Impacciatore

As Daniels told USA Today, viewers shouldn’t think of The Paper as a spinoff — even though it kind of is. “I mean, Oscar is in both of them. So technically it’s a spinoff,” Daniels explained. “But you know, it isn’t like the story of Oscar in a new land.”

According to Daniels, the show focuses on “journalism in the modern age,” and all the challenges that entails. “They’re following a very idealistic person who is really trying to swim against the tide,” he added, with Gleeson describing the series as being about “underdog characters that are banding together to keep journalism alive.”

Task

The latest from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby is described as “a riveting crime story set in the outskirts of Philadelphia that follows an FBI task force charged with putting an end to a recent string of armed robberies.” An FBI veteran and family man (Mark Ruffalo) is assigned to lead the investigation, not realizing he’s tracking a criminal (Tom Pelphrey) who’s not that different from him, but was pushed into crime by circumstances beyond his control.

“What always interested me about these stories is trying to portray them with a lot of empathy, a lot of humanity, to really get into the emotional ties of the working-class people, and to portray them with courage and honour,” says Ingelsby. “That’s really my goal is to write these characters with layers and complexity that we don’t often get to see.”

SEPTEMBER 7, HBO CANADA

While no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to stand by and watch Daniel be deceived. She’ll do anything to protect him. As things go from bad to deadly, the question is, is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura paranoid and possessive? The truth is a matter of perspective,” notes the synopsis for this six-episode series, which Wright is also directing.

“I’m so filled with pride and nostalgia watching this film,” says McLachlan. “Ally and the team have beautifully captured the magic and strength of a community of women who came together and lifted each other up to create positive change in the world. THE LOWDOWN

His follow-up to Reservation Dogs, Sterlin Harjo’s comedic noir series traces the gritty exploits of citizen journalist Lee Raybon (Ethan Hawke), a self-proclaimed “truthstorian” whose obsession with veracity is always getting him into trouble. He lives and works at a rare bookstore tucked in the heart of Tulsa — a local refuge and unofficial community hub. While Lee’s no idealist, he is fiercely committed to exposing corruption and unearthing the city’s hidden rot, even when it puts him at risk. His constant sleuthing pulls him deep into Oklahoma’s underbelly — and often away from his 14-year-old daughter Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), a precocious kid who’s inherited his curiosity and longs to join dad on his adventures. His ex Samantha (Kaniehtiio Horn) is exasperated by Lee’s endless digging, but still sees the good in him — especially when it comes to Francis, the one thing they’ve never stopped showing up for.

When the publication of Lee’s latest exposé — a deep dive into the powerful Washberg family — is immediately followed by the suspicious suicide of family black sheep Dale Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson), Lee realizes he’s stumbled onto something big. Following a trail of breadcrumbs Dale has left behind, urging someone to probe deeper into the circumstances surrounding his death, Lee does just that. He discovers that Betty Jo (Jeanne Tripplehorn), the grieving widow, seems to be more interested in her brother-in-law Donald Washberg (Kyle MacLachlan), a gubernatorial candidate, than in her dearly departed hubby — while powerful forces want to prevent Lee from learning anything more.

Meanwhile, our hero has also gained the attention of a mysterious stranger who appears when Lee least expects it: refined and suave, Marty (Keith David) shares Lee’s appreciation of great literary minds, and seems unusually interested in his investigation of the Washbergs.

As Martin told Tudum, the idea for the series came from personal experience. “I was a wayward teen in the early 2000s, and my best friend was sent to one of these troubled teen institutes when she was 16. She came back and had just the craziest stories about it,” Martin said, describing the series as “if you took the kids from Booksmart and put them in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

MASTERPIECE: MAIGRET

Georges Simenon’s beloved novels about streetwise Parisian police detective Jules Maigret have been adapted for the screen several times before. In this latest iteration, Maigret, played by Benjamin Wainwright, “inhabits a vividly realized Paris not often seen on camera that takes us from the glitzy upper-class world of luxury hotels and mansions to local bourgeois bistros and bars and the underground haunts of the professionally criminal,” notes PBS.

This new adaptation “reframes Maigret as an unconventional young detective with something to prove to the Police Judiciaire, relentless in his investigations, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing, and a matchless knowledge of Paris and its inhabitants. Faithfully and lovingly married to Madame Maigret (Stefanie Martini), Maigret heads the elite police unit known as La Crim, responsible for investigating all serious crime in and around Paris.” OCTOBER 5, WTVS & KCTS

The cast is loaded with familiar favourites from other hit shows, including Chris O’Donnell (NCIS: Los Angeles), Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy) and Kimberly Williams-Paisley (According to Jim), along with LeAnn Rimes, Hailey Kilgore, Michael Provost, Juani Feliz and Hunter McVey. As a bonus for country music fans, Kane Brown will guest star as himself in the series premiere, in which he “proves heroic in a major storyline.”

MASTERPIECE: THE GOLD

This taut crime drama (which previously debuted on Paramount+) is based on a real-life robbery in which six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport in November 1983, and inadvertently stumbled across gold bullion worth nearly $50 million — the disposal of which led to a vast international money-laundering operation and left controversy and murder in its wake. Described as “a pulsating dramatization which takes a journey into a 1980s world awash with cheap money and loosened morals,” The Gold will conclude with a second and final season on Masterpiece, premiere date yet to be announced.

Despite being told that all passengers are accounted for and that she must have dreamed it, Lo stubbornly refuses to let it go, seeking answers while putting her own life in jeopardy.

“Cabin 10, at its heart, is about a woman who experiences something wrong, reports it truthfully, and isn’t taken seriously because of who she is,” Ruth Ware, who wrote the novel upon which the film is based, tells Tudum. “Too many people know what that feels like and I think we want vindication for ourselves as much as Lo.”

Featuring home videos and candid interviews with John Candy’s family, friends and collaborators, I Like Me is “the story of a son, husband, father, friend and professional driven to bring joy to audiences and loved ones while battling personal ghosts and Hollywood pressures.”

MR. SCORSESE

Filmmaker Rebecca Miller’s five-part docuseries unpacks the legacy of director Martin Scorsese, examining “how Scorsese’s colourful life experiences informed his artistic vision as each film he made stunned the world with originality.” Tracking his journey from the formative years making student films at NYU to maverick elder statesman of cinema, Mr. Scorsese “explores the themes that have fascinated Scorsese, including the place of good and evil in the fundamental nature of humankind.”

Having been provided with exclusive access to Scorsese’s private archives, Miller also conducted extensive interviews with Scorsese himself. In addition, the series includes neverbefore-seen interviews with his friends, family and longtime collaborators, including Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Jay Cocks and Rodrigo Prieto

“This project is a filmmaker’s dream, to have had such access to legends of the industry, from Marty himself to his prolific collaborators, close friends and family members,” Miller says. “I was honoured he trusted me to create this documentary, which I believe will resonate with everyone from dedicated Scorsese fans to anyone who has grappled with failure and reached for stars.”

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Thank You – The TV Week team.

SHERIFF COUNTRY

After a 2024 “backdoor pilot” introducing Morena Baccarin as Sheriff Mickey Fox, this spinoff of Fire Country finally arrives. Fox, of course, is stepsister of Cal Fire’s division chief Sharon Leone (Diane Farr) in the original show, and Sheriff Country follows Mickey as she investigates criminal activity while patrolling the streets of small-town Edgewater. Meanwhile, she contends with her ex-con father, Wes ( W. Earl Brown) — an off-the-grid marijuana farmer — and a mysterious incident involving her wayward daughter Skye (Amanda Arcuri). Also in the mix is Mickey’s longtime partner, Boone (Matt Lauria), while Michele Weaver and Christopher Gorham round out the ensemble.

Boston Blue

Fans of Blue Bloods were devastated when the long-running cop drama ended last year after 15 seasons. The silver lining is that the saga isn’t completely over, thanks to this spinoff that focuses on Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) transferring from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department. He’s partnered with Beantown detective Lena Peters (Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead and Star Trek: Discovery fame). “As Reagan adjusts to a new city, he also attempts to reconnect with his son Sean (Mika Amonsen), now a rookie officer in Boston,” adds the synopsis. Danny works with Boston district attorney Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), police superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson) and rookie officer Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner), while Ghostbusters alum Ernie Hudson is Reverend Edwin Peters. Meanwhile, fans can expect Bridget Moynahan to guest star in the series premiere, reprising her role as Danny’s sister, Erin.

The Road

While it’s tempting to roll one’s eyes at the announcement of yet another TV singing competition, The Road delivers some unique twists, courtesy of executive producers Taylor Sheridan (creator of Yellowstone and a dozen or so other TV hits), Blake Shelton and Keith Urban. Set within the milieu of country music, this “journey to discover the next big musician” gives viewers “a backstage pass into the gritty and unforgiving life of a touring artist” as these up-and-coming talents “pile into a tour bus and hit

the road in pursuit of their dreams.” Urban, Shelton and Sheridan will guide these aspiring Nashville stars as they perform before live audiences at different venues in different cities, with country star Gretchen Wilson serving as “tour manager.”

The audience will decide who gets to advance to the next city, with the last singer standing set to walk away with a sizable grand prize.

Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost

A labour of love for director Ben Stiller, this documentary tells the definitive story of his parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. A popular comedy team in the 1960s and ’70s (they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show a whopping 36 times), Meara would become a soughtafter character actress, while Stiller went on to solo success as Frank Costanza in Seinfeld, and then as a series regular on King of Queens. In his film, Stiller explores the duo’s impact — not just on popular culture, but also on their home lives, where the lines between showbiz, family and creativity tended to blur. “In the process, Ben Stiller turns the camera on himself and his family to examine Jerry and Anne’s enormous influence on their lives, and the generational lessons we all can learn from those we love,” notes the synopsis.

“I feel very fortunate to be partnering once again with the incredible team at Apple TV+, this time on a project that is very personal to me and my family,” says Stiller. “It’s exciting to finally get to share it with audiences; and a great honour to celebrate my parents, both as I knew them growing up, and as I’ve come to know them in new ways through the making of this film.”

Given that it’s created by Vince Gilligan — of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame — Pluribus is arguably the most anticipated new show of the 2025-’26 season. Starring Saul’s Rhea Seehorn, plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, with the synopsis simply

reading: “The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.”

Discussing the show when interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, Seehorn didn’t exactly shed light on what viewers can expect when she declared that “[Gilligan is] vacillating between tones and

“It took 30 years. It’s a movie I wanted to make before I even had a camera,” del Toro told Variety. “The usual discourse of Frankenstein has to do with science gone awry. According to PBS, the series “will present the story of the men and women of the Revolutionary generation, their humanity in victory and defeat, and the crisis that they lived through. By weaving together accounts of American political leaders and their British counterparts with the perspectives of the so-called ordinary people who waged and witnessed war, The American Revolution will be an expansive, even-handed look at the virtues and the contradictions in the fight for independence and the birth of the United States.”

Southern-fried sleuth Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is back for a third Knives Out film, which is billed as his deadliest yet. This time, director Rian Johnson integrates the dark, gothic elements of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue — a puzzling whodunit involving a corpse within a locked room. “Set in a small town and focusing on its local church, Wake Up Dead Man is packed with stars, including Josh O’Connor as the younger cleric to Josh Brolin’s autocratic, abrasive priest, Glenn Close as his right-hand person, plus Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Jeremy Renner (whose likeness had a memorable appearance in Glass Onion), and

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues.
