Set against the backdrop of Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast, Hotel Costiera is a series that is singularly unique while offering a hint of familiarity. Grey’s Anatomy fan favourite Jesse Williams stars as Daniel De Luca, a half-Italian, half-American former U.S. Marine employed by the owners of a posh hotel as a fixer, using his particular set of skills to smooth out problems for the hotel’s guests. From rescuing an abducted dog from local thieves to retrieving stolen valuables to solving far darker mysteries, he gets it done.
In this character-driven procedural, Daniel DD to his friends — tackles a new case each episode, assisted by the oddball team he’s assembled — “a band of misfits,” Williams described them during an interview with Variety — in the nearby town of Positano: streetwise Bignè (Antonio Gerardi), Daniel’s childhood friend from Naples; mysterious and glamorous British ex-pat Genny (Jordan Alexandra); and Tancredi (Sam Haygarth), an eccentric Brit with a talent for espionage. According to Williams, his character is “caught in limbo in his life . . . somebody who was just planning to drop in for a couple months . . . but he’s drawn in and stuck and staying there” as he “finds himself propelled
into escapade after escapade.”
The combination of the gorgeous setting along with elements of action, comedy, drama and whodunit-style mystery strikes just the right tone, resulting in a new series that’s as entertaining as it is lovely to look at.
“You have really joyful, blissful, wonderful, spontaneous comedy and high stakes and tension and action,” Williams explained. “You have speed boats and motorcycles and Maseratis. And then you also have really heartfelt characters on the precipice in different ways and real threats. They’re things that keep you hooked. But a lightness, a real lightness, a real combination of Italian and British humour, which I really love.”

While it’s been reported that Demi Moore’s character will play a larger role, the second season will also see the addition of Sam Elliott to the cast. Has there been any news about that Tomb Raider series I read about a few years ago?
T.C., Nanaimo Back in January 2023, Amazon’s Prime Video announced plans for a new series based on the popular Tomb Raider video games, which had previously come to the big screen with Angelina Jolie and then Alicia Vikander in the role of swashbuckling
archaeologist Lara Croft. At the helm of this new iteration: Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), serving as creator, executive producer and writer. It was subsequently announced that Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner had been cast in the leading role.
However, reports began to emerge of trouble behind the scenes, with the series going through two different writers’ rooms without generating any approved scripts. Finally, veteran producer Chad Hodge (creator of such series as Runaway, The Playboy Club, Wayward Pines and Good
Behavior) was brought in as a consultant and eventually bumped up to executive producer and showrunner, which apparently got things back on track.
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out . . . Croft is coming . . .” Production on Tomb Raider is slated to begin in January 2026.

what are the odds that some of his Dunder Mifflin co-workers will drop by?
F.R., Burnaby
The Paper ’s creator, Greg Daniels — who also served as showrunner of The Office — was asked that exact question during an interview with The AV Club, and you may not like his answer. “I felt like, for season one, the show needed to stand on its own feet,” Daniels explained. “It would be lame to call old friends and go, ‘Help us, help us.’ I don’t think we should jump from guest appearance to guest appearance. That would be a weak way to do something new, even though the audience might enjoy it.”
Then again, Daniels admitted he’s not ruling anything out. “I’m certainly excited to possibly do a reunion one day with the former cast. But at the moment, I don’t think a lot of them want to revisit it either. It was such a wonderful experience, and I think people are nervous in a ‘you can’t go home again’ kind of way.”

Whenever I come across reruns of Mork & Mindy, I’m reminded of the interesting casting that the show had. Is it true that Jay Leno was a regular on the series?
F.O., White Rock
Mork & Mindy, which began as a backdoor pilot on a Happy Days episode, aired from 1978 to 1982 and was a big hit right from its first season. In subsequent seasons, however, viewership dropped off in large numbers. That’s because ABC moved the show to Sundays from its original Thursday spot to try and blunt the strong ratings of CBS’s Archie Bunker’s Place, but the Robin Williams-starring sitcom just couldn’t find its way. Mork eventually moved back to Thursdays, but the numbers never recovered and the show was cancelled.
As you point out, the series did feature some interesting casting, with regulars in later seasons including Williams’ hero Jonathan Winters, standup comic Bill Kirchenbauer and sitcom vet Shelley Fabares — yet the most consistent rumour about casting is the one you point out, involving Jay Leno. The future Tonight Show host never did appear on Mork & Mindy, but he did audition for the role of Remo DaVinci, which ultimately went to Jay Thomas. The reason casting directors passed on a young Leno, according to backstage chatter, was concern over his appearance . . . particularly that his prominent jawline would frighten children. Interestingly, Leno’s eventual late-night rival David Letterman did make a guest-starring appearance on the show, playing a shady motivational speaker modelled after EST founder Werner Erhard

Ataut spy thriller with a wicked sense of humour, Slow Horses has been slowly, steadily building an audience and racking up Emmy nominations over its four seasons to date.
Season five opens to find slovenly yet sly MI5 agent Jackson Lamb (Oscar winner Gary Oldman) and his team of misfits at Slough House wallowing, as ever, in the inertia of their dead-end careers . . . until an assassination attempt on one of their own kicks off another unpredictable mission.
What follows is a
chain reaction of seemingly disparate attacks across the U.K., as a fiendishly clever terrorist group looks to destabilize and conquer, right when the nation is already divided over a fraught political election.
Naturally, Lamb and Slough House are the only ones who recognize the threat . . . and, naturally, they’re forced to chase down the enemy while they themselves are being hunted by their own oblivious “allies” at MI5.
Rest assured, the show has already been renewed for seasons six and seven.

Another Apple thriller — starring another Oscar winner — makes its debut this week.
Jessica Chastain both produces and stars in this eight-part series loosely inspired by a 2019 Cosmopolitan article about an unnamed ex-Marine/ex-cop who, even in retirement, kept fighting for justice, using her finely honed investigative skills to go undercover online, infiltrate hate groups and
keep tabs on their activities — sounding the alarm if their vitriol ever turned to violence.
“I was really moved by this woman’s story,” Chastain told L’Officiel USA magazine. “This idea that she spends most of her time having to read these incredibly sexist and racist and horrible comments of hate and she has to kind of slip into a character to navigate those waters, but she’s doing it all for the greater good — I found that really compelling.”

First making a splash by creating and starring in acclaimed dramedy Feel Good, Canadian comic Mae Martin has distinguished themself as one of the most distinct, exciting artistic voices to emerge from our home and native land in the past decade.
For this latest endeavour, Martin takes a turn for the dramatic and the horrific — while still leaving a little room for the darkly comedic.

A co-writer and co-star of Ted Lasso, Brett Goldstein co-writes and co-stars in this Apple original film set in a near-future where scientific testing can determine your soulmate. Yet even though their “results” say otherwise, best pals Laura (Imogen Poots) and Simon (Goldstein) can’t help but feel they belong together.
Wayward finds Martin playing Alex, a cop who moves to the small town of Tall Pines with his pregnant wife Laura (Sarah Gadon). At first, all seems idyllic, as Alex and Laura are gifted a picture-perfect, whitepicket-fence home to start their new life. Alas, the town is also home to an institute for “troubled youth,” presided over by a mysterious headmistress named Evelyn (Toni Collette) whose therapy proves destructive to mind, body and soul. Soon enough, Alex realizes that beneath its dreamy exterior, Tall Pines is a nightmare.
As Martin told Tudum: “I often talk around adolescence [in my work] or I write characters who are processing their teens. It was such an intense time for me, and is for everyone, but I’ve always known I wanted to more directly dive into that time and all the visceral feelings of adolescence . . . I was a wayward teen in the early 2000s, and my best friend was sent to one of these troubled teen institutes when she was 16. She came back and had just the craziest stories about it.”
Adds Martin’s co-creator, Ryan Scott: “I wanted to explore why one generation always ends up hating the next. We were all teenagers once (or still are) and then we slowly transformed into adults who forget. Wayward is about this metamorphosis. About those of us that fight it and try to hold on to our teenage selves, and those that surrender to adulthood.”
Despite sporting the face of a matinee idol, Ethan Hawke has, over the past three decades or so, built himself a most eclectic career. From acclaimed indies (the Before trilogy) to Oscar-winning crime thrillers (Training Day) to twisted horror flicks (The Black Phone) to directing a documentary about Golden Age Hollywood power couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward (The Last Movie Stars), you never can tell where Mr. Hawke will pop up next.
For his latest, he’s teamed with another pop-culture iconoclast, writer Sterlin Harjo, whose dramedy Reservation Dogs carved out a bold new space for Indigenous storytelling in the mainstream.
Premiering with two episodes tonight, this noir comedy casts Hawke as Lee Raybon, a bookstore owner who moonlights as a wannabe journalist (or, to hear him tell it, “truthstorian”) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Juggling a failing business with obligations to his ex-wife Samantha (Kaniehtiio Horn) and teen daughter Francis (Ryan Kiera

Armstrong), Lee isn’t where anyone would want to be in their life in their mid-50s. But all of a sudden, his latest story catches fire, as an exposé on the sordid past of local power players the Washberg family sends our hero and his family down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and absurdity, after one Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson) commits suicide just as another (Kyle MacLachlan) is running for governor.
As Harjo teased to TV Insider: “I think that [Lee’s] fight for truth supersedes his need to be a journalist. And sometimes that gets him in trouble but sometimes that puts the people that he loves in danger. That’s sort of the dance that he does throughout the season. The fun is to see where that goes, how scary the crosshairs are and what else he uncovers as he’s navigating the trouble he’s caused.”

Avid sitcom viewers will remember Texas funnywoman Cristela Alonzo from her eponymous sitcom, which was among the most-buzzed series on ABC’s 2014-2015 schedule — and yet, did not live to see 2015-2016. Like any good standup, Alonzo didn’t let rejection keep her down. She’s continued appearing across the TV landscape on series like His Dark Materials and The Upshaws — all while honing
her act on the standup circuit. That in mind, her latest special, Upper Classy, debuts this Tuesday on Netflix.
Per Deadline, the new set finds Cristela “in pursuit of happiness. Whether finding out she’s doing better than her high school bully, visiting a spa and getting too much self-care, or taking her family on their first vacation ever, Cristela teaches her family (and herself) how to enjoy life, whether they like it or not.”

Yet another dose of Texas absurdity hits the airwaves this week. Creator and star Brian Jordan Alvarez returns for a second semester at Morrison-Hensley High. Back in season one, this particular Austin school proved to be a hotbed for political, societal and personal reckoning — braved by teachers and students alike — as this little microcosm of America banded together and busted apart along with the nation itself.
Season two debuts with three back-to-back episodes, once again centred around English teacher Evan Marquez (Alvarez). In the first, Evan finds himself pushing back as his students attempt to “modernize”
the school play. Then, our hapless hero finds himself on the other end of the change spectrum as he tries to update Morrison-Hensley’s waste management system. Finally, Evan and his fellow teachers must brave a dinner party thrown by Principal Grant (Enrico Colantoni).
All told, this remains a show that uses its absurdity to unpack real, often-tragic human experiences. As Alvarez told Collider in 2024: “We want to come at everything with empathy and with a lot of intelligence. We’re trying to think deeply about things . . . We want our characters to be real people and empathetic people who are doing their best — and I think that combination lets us do a lot.”

The series that puts celebs through the same training that sculpts America’s soldiers returns for a fourth deployment.
Enduring the crucible this year will be: country music artist Jessie James Decker, Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson East, reality stars Kody Brown (Sister Wives) and Brittany Cartwright (The Valley), World Cup soccer great Christie Pearce Rampone, former NFL players Randall Cobb, Eric Decker and Andrew East, former college football star and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, ex-NBA star Nick Young, internet personalities Mark Estes and Brianna LaPaglia, The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Gia Giudice and Teresa Giudice, models Chanel Iman and Eva Marcille, and actor Ravi V. Patel (Animal Control ).
But the most intriguing recruit among this eclectic bunch is, no doubt, Jussie Smollett (pictured) — the Empire actor whose prodigious
career was derailed in early 2019 when he claimed to be the victim of a hate crime on the streets of Chicago, only to then be convicted himself for filing a false police report. That conviction was eventually overturned in 2024 due to a Fifth Amendment violation, but Smollett’s guilt or innocence in this matter is still — at least in the court of public opinion — very much up in the air, even as Smollett himself has maintained his innocence throughout.
Now returning to Fox, the very same network that launched his career back in the halcyon days of Empire, viewers will no doubt be enthralled by his journey through this particular gauntlet.
Whether or not Smollett is telling the truth about what happened to him that night years ago is up for debate. But one thing that’s for sure: the reallive Special Forces drill sergeants in charge of this reality show will dredge up his “deepest and truest character.”
The NBC sing-off returns for season 28. Coaches Reba McEntire, Niall Horan, Snoop Dogg and Burnaby’s own Michael Bublé slide into those spinning red highbacks. In that same Entertainment Weekly article, showrunner Jess Castro mused on the fact that this season will

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information. Thank You – The TV Week team.
Please note that all the listings provided in TV Week are in Pacific tim. However, some systems may provide a different feed for some channels we list • For COMEDY on Telus HD, HISTORY and W NETWORK on Bell/Telus Satellite and Telus HD, as well as FAMILY and YTV on Xfinit HD, Rogers HD and Telus HD, please subtract three hours from the listings as these systems carry the East Feed. Grid selection numbers appear in italic to denote an East Feed.

Throughout the history of television, various producers have left their distinctive marks on the culture at large through their TV creations. From Norman Lear (All in the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons) to Aaron Spelling (The Love Boat, Charlie’s Angels, Beverly Hills, 90210) to Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue) to Dick Wolf (the Law & Order, Chicago and FBI franchises), they managed to attract viewers by capturing the zeitgeist of various eras.
Undoubtedly, the producer of the moment is Taylor Sheridan. In the wake of Yellowstone’s massive success, Sheridan unleashed a stunning run of hit shows, including prequels 1883 and 1923, along with Mayor of Kingstown, Special Ops: Lioness, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Landman and Tulsa King.
The latter series returns this week with its third season, furthering the exploits of exiled New York mobster Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) as he cements his control over the criminal underworld in Tulsa, Oklahoma, via a local — and entirely legal — marijuana dispensary.
When we last saw Dwight in the second season’s finale, he’d just been abducted by masked gunmen. And while details remain scarce as to how that particular cliffhanger will be resolved, the new season’s
synopsis offers some clues: “As Dwight’s empire expands, so do his enemies — and the risks to his crew.
Now, he faces his most dangerous adversaries in Tulsa yet: the Dunmires, a powerful old-money family that doesn’t play by old-world rules, forcing Dwight to fight for everything he’s built and protect his family.”
Meanwhile, the new season will also introduce a new character: Russell Lee Washington, Jr., played by Samuel L. Jackson. Russell befriended Dwight while they served time in prison together, but that friendship is understandably strained when Russell is hired by New York’s Renzetti crime family and sent to whack Dwight. That job, however, takes an unexpected detour that sets up an upcoming spinoff series, NOLA King, which begins production next year.
“Inspired by what Dwight created in Tulsa and impressed with the possibilities of second chances, Washington returns to New Orleans, the home he abandoned 40 years ago, to rekindle his relationship with his family, friends, and to take control of the city he left behind,” reads the logline of the spinoff. “In so doing, he incurs the wrath of his former employers in New York, and makes himself vulnerable to old NOLA foes, both criminal and cop.”
As for Tulsa King, details about the new season are being kept under wraps, but Martin Starr — who plays dispensary owner Bodhi — shared a brief tease in an interview with Collider. “This new season is going to be a lot of fun,” he said, revealing at that point he’d just read scripts for the season’s first two episodes. “It looks already like there’s going to be a lot of action, and there are some loose ends that may or may not get tied up.”
With Stallone pushing 80, Tulsa King has provided a juicy late-career role for the septuagenarian star, who knowingly mocks his big-screen action-hero persona in a series that melds mob drama and deft comedy. In fact, Stallone told IndieWire that playing Dwight was an “easy” fit for him. “It seems funny and natural because that’s what my real voice is,” Stallone said.
That was by design; when Stallone came onboard, it wasn’t just as an actor, but also as an executive producer and writer, which allowed him to tweak the role so it fit him like a glove. “I tried to make it as close to my personality as possible,” Stallone said. “The idea is: They come up with an idea, a concept, but if you’re a writer, you know how to tailor things to your strengths and deflect your weaknesses.” ■
Outer Banks creator Jonas Pate assembles a group of real-life musicians for his new drama about a teenage rock band
Outer Banks creator Jonas Pate assembles a group of real-life musicians for his new drama about a teenage rock band
For the third season of the Netflix series Outer Banks, creator Jonas Pate put out a casting call for young musicians to play a gig on the popular YA show. Of the more than 5,000 people that responded, William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock and Jesse Golliher were cast as The Runarounds, not knowing that the intention was to spin the group into a series of their own. “The way they did it was pretty fun,” says Ellis. “Jonas posted on social media,
‘We’re looking for bands.’ Most of us thought we were signing up for an Outer Banks cameo, playing in a band for a song. But it was a whole different thing.”
A gig playing Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me” in a 2022 episode of Outer Banks has not only turned into an eight-episode drama about a high school band chasing stardom the summer after their graduation, but a bona fide pop group — like a One Direction of sorts. Since they were assembled by Pate, the five have done the work to form an ensemble that exists both onscreen and off. “You get into the room and write a lot of songs, and experience all the natural things that come with a real band,” says Lipton. “We did all the right things to prep, so everything that we want to be authentic on the show comes through. All the rehearsal scenes are just like us in real life, guitars strapped around us, shooting the s***.”
In the storytelling, Pate has tried to incorporate as much of the boys’ real lives as possible. “There was a little bit of interviewing,” says Murdock.
“We sat down with the people who ended up being writers on the show and they asked us questions — the hard stuff — and we tried to give the most natural answers and let them into our personal lives.” For most of the guys, who have never acted before, this made inhabiting the characters easier. “I think Jonas figured that if he built our lives into it a little bit to jump-start the characters, that it would help us ease into the process of acting,” says Ellis. “It was a big help.”
Their friendship, though, was something the guys were left to forge on their own. “We’re all similar in age and we all have a shared love of music. We lived together during the pilot, so we were all in the same house, played pool, played some
‘‘ There are so many relatable themes [in this show], of friendship, finding yourself and being there for each other. It’s about those transition years, when friends become your chosen family.”
poker, and in our off times we’d go hang out downtown,” says Golliher. “You’re put in a perfect environment to just be friends with everybody.” While chemistry seems like something that could be faked for television, their camaraderie felt vital to the boys when it came to songwriting. “It’s such a vulnerable process,” says Lipton. “You have to be trusting of each person that’s on stage with you and in the writer’s room because you’re wearing your heart on your sleeve. You want to know that your boy’s got your back.”
Of course there is no music without a muse. On the series, Lipton’s character Charlie is mesmerized by Sophia, played by Pate’s real-life daughter Lilah. She may seem like an archetype, but to the actress, Sophia is more than a manic pixie dream girl meant to teach Charlie important life lessons. “Sophia’s mom passed away a few years before this story takes place, and since then she’s kind of been going through the motions of life, but she’s not really living,” she says. “She lost hope that she would ever feel alive again in a world without her mom. Throughout the course of the season, she taps into her artist soul and lets in friends that make her feel alive.”
Working with her father has been an incredible experience for Pate. “I see how much he cares about this project, about the art that he makes and about each individual
member of this cast. And it is such a team effort. He cares about everyone’s ideas and he empowers everyone,” she says. “The first day on set, working with him was a little different because there’s a father-daughter relationship. Then we realized I’m an actor just like everyone else. We had a really great talk on the porch that night. We just realized how lucky we are to be in this situation and keep pinching ourselves that it really happened.”
As each character in The Runarounds tries to tap into their potential and wonders what their post-graduation future may bring, the actors portraying these characters had a deep understanding of what that moment in time feels like. “I was totally in that place, making those decisions,” says Pate of her time on set. “And there are so many relatable themes [in this show], of friendship, finding yourself and being there for each other. It’s about those transition years, when friends become your chosen family.” ■
A determined FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) tracks a surprising criminal (Tom Pelphrey) in this new thriller from the creator of Mare of Easttown
Sunday, 8 p.m., 9 p.m. & 11:25 p.m., HBO Canada
fter the critical success of Mare of Easttown, series creator Brad Ingelsby wasn’t sure how to follow up the dark whodunit. He knew he didn’t want to write another mystery. Then, disillusioned priest-turned-FBI agent Tom and garbage truck operator Robbie, who robs drug houses at night, appeared in his mind. “Everything I’ve written in my life has come from characters,” says Ingelsby. “When I came up with the characters for Tom and Robbie, I felt like, what’s the engine that’s going to join these guys? Maybe the tension can be a collision course.”
Once Ingelsby devised the two characters on opposite sides of the law, the question wasn’t if they were going to end up in the same room, but when. “I felt like that it was a different kind of tension than Mare, but the tension could be equally potent,” he says. “It’s a testament to the actors we have that it is equally potent because you care about each one of them so much.” As Tom, for whom a recent loss weighs heavily on him, Ingelsby pursued The Avengers and I Know This Much Is True star Mark Ruffalo. “When I talked to Mark about his character, I said, ‘There’s nothing particularly special about you as an FBI agent. You’re not good with a gun, you’re not going to walk into a room and pick up clues that other people miss. That’s not what makes you interesting. What makes you interesting is that you’re approaching the job from a unique spot,” he says. “Tom, and also Mark as a person, is such a kind, compassionate person. He is a guy that is constantly searching for good in people.”
In the series, Ruffalo goes toe to toe with Ozark ’s Tom Pelphrey, who was drawn to Ingelby’s writing, and the character of Robbie, from the start. “I was blown away,” says Pelphrey. “What Brad put on the page is so beautiful and so engaging. When I watched it, I thought everybody’s work was exceptional, and that happens when there’s beautiful writing. That’s the only time that every actor is elevated. Every single character has a strong ‘why.’ So often you have to go off on your own and you’re doing backflips in the dark to tell yourself some dream story about why you’re doing what you’re doing. But Brad gives it to you.”
Returning to Pennsylvania’s Delaware County (“Delco” to locals) was a given for Ingelsby, who hails from the small town of Berwyn, PA. “It’s the blood in my veins, it’s the people I know and it’s the people I care about,” says Ingelsby. “It’s
‘‘ This is a show that really is all about the detail . . . It’s the aggregate of a million little details, all the things that aren’t going to make it onscreen, but are there anyway. Even if you’re never going to see those things, an actor can seep that in.”
professional challenges. “It was hard,” Jones says of the unique Delco accent. “We had a great dialect coach called Susanne Selby and she really helped us. I did Zoom lessons for five months and then I flew out to Philly two weeks before we started shooting and Suzanne and I would go around bars in Delaware County and just listen to people talking. It was really fun, though, because it’s not just an accent, it’s an energy.”
the way I grew up, so I feel a certain ownership of that and a certain obligation to tell it, right? If I’m going to go back into Delco, I want to make sure I’m telling it with the same level of complexity and care that we did in Mare.” But for his actors — London-born Emilia Jones, in particular — this came with some
Shooting the series on location allowed the actors to imbue something unique into their work. “This is a show that really is all about the detail. I’ve got to give credit to [production designers]
Keith Cunningham and Edward McLoughlin who worked with us on Mare of Easttown — they care so much about the details,” says Ingelsby. “It’s the aggregate of a million little details, all the things that aren’t going to make it onscreen, but are there anyway. Even if you’re never going to see those things, an actor can seep that in.” Pelphrey shares a moment on set that stuck with him.
“I was waiting to film and saw in the rafters a spider’s web, and I was like, ‘Huh, we’re using an old shack.’ No, Keith put spiders up that no one will ever see. I was like, ‘Damn, that is how you do your job.’”
Equally, the series that initially presents itself as an uncomplicated game of cat and mouse, offers a meticulous perspective on morality. “What I hope separates the show is the level of care we give to all the characters, not just the cops, but also the criminals and the bad guys,” he says. “It’s a drama about lives under pressure, people who are backed into a corner who don’t have choices. You don’t have to agree with all the decisions that are being made on screen, but I hope you can understand why they’re being made. As a team, we were always trying to lead with compassion and empathy.” ■

HBO scored a critical and commercial hit with Succession, following a group of cutthroat siblings in a dysfunctional family competing for control of the media empire built by their elderly father. While it’s no secret that the series was not-soloosely based on Rupert Murdoch and his spawn, the scenario that unfolded has been a familiar one in
many a successful family business. That includes Ireland’s famed Guinness brewery, founded in 1759 by Arthur Guinness and remaining one of the most popular and familiar beverages in the world. His grandson, Benjamin Guinness, took over the business in 1839, growing the company by leaps and bounds; by 1855, he’d become Ireland’s richest and most powerful person.
His death in 1868, at the age of 69, sparked a Succession-like battle for control by his grown children, which plays out in new historical drama House of Guinness, the latest from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight
“It’s the extraordinary story of a family who happens to be the inheritors of the biggest brewery in the world. They’re young and are
given the task of taking on this incredibly successful brand,” Knight tells Tudum. “The first priority is: Don’t screw it up. And the second priority is to make Guinness even bigger.”
Those siblings — Arthur (Anthony Boyle), Edward (Louis Partridge), Anne (Emily Fairn) and Ben (Fionn O’Shea) — are at the centre of the series. “They’re chained together — [with] these kinds of golden hoops around each other’s souls,” says Boyle, describing his character as the de facto head of the family after their father’s death. “Arthur just wants to go to London, have sex, drink, smoke and have the craic [Irish slang for having a good time].”
died, their father very deliberately chained Arthur and Edward together in responsibility for the brewery. You’ll find out why when you watch.”
Edward, on the other hand, boasts a very different temperament. “He is very principled. I like that Edward really knows what he thinks and he’s assertive. He can be strong when he needs to be, he’s confident,” says Partridge.
Their father’s death, and the will he left behind, causes a seismic shift that creates rifts between the siblings. “Here’s a deceased father deciding the fate of his children. The will determines the trajectory of each of those siblings. What’s a better place to start a drama than that?” Knight says. “They all receive whatever they receive. None of them are happy.”
As Knight observes, the four siblings were “naturally wild,” and lived a debaucherous lifestyle commensurate with their vast wealth. “I’m just in awe of their zest for life — their lust for life, often literally,” he says.
According to Knight, it’s the relationship between brothers Arthur and Edward that is at the “heart” of House of Guinness “I won’t give away the plot — but they were given joint stewardship of the brewery for very interesting reasons,” he explains. “Before he
Stepping into the void left by their father’s death is all-encompassing; not only was he the brains behind the brewery’s massive expansion, he was also a political force in Ireland
“The show has everything — rich characters, brilliant relationships, and a sexy, textured world to learn about.”
— in addition to being elected the first lord mayor of Dublin.
“The decisions these characters make about personal issues will have consequences for the future of Ireland, which is quite a burden,” Knight says. “The pressure adds fuel and energy to all of those relationships.”
Perhaps the most intriguing character in the series isn’t even one of the four Guinness siblings, but Sean Rafferty (played by Happy Valley alum James Norton). “Rafferty is one of the most extraordinary aspects of this
series,” teases Knight. “His relationship with the family depicts how modern the story actually is.”
Other characters include “determined”
Ellen Cochrane (Niamh McCormack), “seductive”
Lady Olivia Hedges (Danielle Galligan), ambitious Byron Hedges (Game of Thrones villain Jack Gleeson), Aunt Agnes Guinness (Dervla Kirwan), Patrick Cochrane (Seamus O’Hara), John Potter (Michael McElhatton) and shady Bonnie Champion (David Wilmot).
As Knight explains, he came to the project via production company Kudos, with whom he worked on the 2022 military thriller SAS: Rogue Heroes. When Kudos brought him the story of Guinness family feud, he knew immediately that House of Guinness would be his next undertaking. “They thought this project might be of interest to me since I’m interested in beer,” he jokes. “And my answer was, ‘Yes, definitely!’”
While the basic facts are all true, Knight — as is the case with much historical drama — had to invent the details. “What I had to do is take things that these family members did, things that they said, achievements they made, mistakes that they made, and use them as stepping stones. Then I had to fill in the gaps myself,” he explains. “It’s just a question of saying, ‘Here’s the character that I imagine this person is. This is why they did that.’”
As Norton declares, viewers are in for one wild ride. “[The scripts] are rich, full of brilliant characters — a piece of history,” he says. “Tonally, it’s playful, funny, smoky, sexy, and at the heart of it is a great story with a great family dynamic. The show has everything — rich characters, brilliant relationships, and a sexy, textured world to learn about.” ■

In the late 1960s, L.A. architect Bernard Judge was hired by Marlon Brando to design and build an ecologically self-sustaining retreat on his island in Tahiti. That strange-but-true story is the focus of this new film following Judge (Jon Heder) as he undertakes the monumental task for the mercurial movie star (Billy Zane), with their architectural experiment catapulting the men on an emotional, eccentric journey.
No strangers to explosive action, Shazad Latif (Nautilus) and Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) team up for this odd-couple thriller about two shady Brits who cross paths in North Africa, stumble into possession of enriched uranium and find themselves hunted by deadly forces from both sides of the law — with possible nuclear annihilation on the horizon.

QYou both, no doubt, see a lot of thriller scripts come your way. What was it about Atomic that stood out?
A
SHAZAD: I think it was the amount of stuff we got to do. It was action. It was comedy. It was a buddy movie, a road movie . . . It just had every genre. It was like Midnight Run and Sicario and a western — and very deep, emotional characters as well.
QAlfie, your character, Max, is described as a “free-spirited drug trafficker.” That’s a rare turn of phrase . . .
A
ALFIE: I’ve never really played a character like this before . . . He works for the Venezuelan drug cartel; he’s a driver. But he very much tries to distance himself from the murky side of that industry and say that he’s all about “love.” That’s the only thing he really believes in. He’s got his relationship with his girlfriend, and that’s what keeps him going. So, he’s an optimist,
definitely — but as with any interesting character, there are some questionable things about him as well.
QMax meets his opposite in the form of the more jaded J.J., who threatens to shoot him in the spine. How does their relationship blossom from there?
A SHAZAD: I think, weirdly, even though they lie to each other throughout the series, there’s something honest about saying, “I’m gonna shoot you through the spine.” The blunt honesty of that means they can be open with each other, even if they’re keeping things from each other. There’s a vulnerability there. There’s also hilarious comedy that comes out of that, because definitely one of them talks more, and the other one just gets annoyed. But then they realize they need each other. It’s survival in a high-stakes situation — and there’s a mutual understanding and a kind of respect that gets built out of that.
QStunts are obviously a huge part of the equation here. What was that like?
AALFIE: Well, it was all very hands-on from day one. There’s not a lot of CGI in this. It’s all kind of done for real. And I love having someone say to me, “Drive
from Point A to Point B as fast as you can!” Because I myself like driving; something I shared with Max, without a doubt, was my love of going fast.
Q How do these men change each other during their unlikely journey together?
ASHAZAD: They definitely change and grow. My character starts off completely guarded. He softens, and even for him to say, “I’m going to become less violent” at one point — it’s a huge step [laughs].
ALFIE: Max starts to question his own belief system a little bit. What is his idea of “love?” How does that transform throughout the series? Because it does, without a doubt . . .
Q These guys both carry dark pasts, and now have the chance to be heroic. Even if they aren’t looking for redemption, are they forced to confront themselves?
A SHAZAD: It’s a question we all have, isn’t it? Every day. Do I do enough good? What bad things have I done?
ALFIE: I think that’s at the core of this whole story — their humanity. In terms of do they or don’t they [do the right thing]? You’ll just have to wait and see.
Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.
Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.
A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
