Adventuring with Whole Foods

Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.

Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.

A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

How Lilith Fair changed music

The 1990s was a fertile breeding ground for music festivals, ranging from Lollapalooza (founded by Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell to showcase alternative sounds) to H.O.R.D.E. (the brainchild of Blues Traveler’s John Popper, aimed at jam-band fans) to the shambolic Woodstock ’94, which disastrously combined corporate greed with testosterone-fuelled aggression.

On the opposite end of the specturm was Lilith Fair, which changed the game by featuring only female artists. Launched by Sarah McLachlan as a response to music industry barriers that created hurdles for women, Lilith Fair spanned three glorious summers — and is the subject of Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, kicking off the new season of CBC’s Passionate Eye documentary series.

Produced by Schitt’s Creek ’s Dan Levy and directed by Ally Pankiw, the film draws from 600-plus hours of never-before-seen archival footage, and features new interviews with McLachlan, along with Lilith Fair artists including Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Paula Cole, Jewel, Natalie Merchant, Indigo Girls and Emmylou Harris

“Lilith Fair holds a very special place in my heart,” says Levy. “It was one of the first

spaces where I remember feeling at home. The music, the sense of community, and the power of a group of women proving an entire industry wrong was a tremendous thing to experience. What Sarah built with that festival changed so much for so many people. And while it is now seen as an odds-defying success story, it was an uphill battle every step of the way . . . I am excited for everyone to understand just how revolutionary Lilith Fair really was.”

Adds Pankiw: “The collaborative effort of this film and what it took to make it mirrors the incredible underdog story of Sarah and her team and how they fought for Lilith to succeed against all odds.”

ODYSSEY LOST AT SEA?

Anything to report on Doctor Odyssey?

D.N., Fort Langley

Unfortunately, ABC’s sexy, soapy, all-round outlandish drama about a cruise ship doctor (played by B.C.’s own Joshua Jackson) has been scuttled after just one season. The network spent a longerthan-usual amount of time discussing the show’s future with producer Ryan Murphy this past spring at the end of Doctor Odyssey ’s maiden voyage, amidst concerns over cost, ratings, creative direction and allegations of harassment made against a member of the film crew. And while they have still not officially cancelled it, ABC execs did allow the cast’s contract options to expire — effectively ending any hopes of a season two.

BACK WITH A BANG?

I remember they were talking about doing a remake (or a reunion) for The Big Bang Theory. Is that still happening?

D.M., Vancouver

It’s not a remake, but rather a spinoff that original Big Bang co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady have been mulling for a good long while now. And luckily for fans, word has just come down that it’s been ordered to series — not by original network CBS, but by streamer HBO Max (available

via Crave in Canada). Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will centre on the titular comic book purveyor (Kevin Sussman), along with other recurring characters from Big Bang, including Denise (Lauren Lapkus), Bert (Brian Posehn) and Barry (John Ross Bowie) — yet takes their story in a most unexpected direction. As HBO Max’s synopsis tells it: “Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided

in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert and quantum physicist/ all-around pain in the a** Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.”

Lorre furthermore teased in a statement: “I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone . . . something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated and argued about.” Meanwhile, his new co-creator, Free Guy screenwriter Zak Penn, was just a tad more tongue-incheek: “I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from Big Bang Theory would watch. I couldn’t resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out . . .”

PUTTING THE PAST BEHIND THEM?

You mentioned that Dexter: Resurrection was coming back. What about the other one [Original Sin]?

D.N., North Vancouver

While Dexter: Resurrection has yet to be officially renewed for season two, reports indicate the odds are good, as a writers’ room has been opened to brainstorm upon the continued exploits of serial killer hunter Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall). News is not so hot for prequel Original Sin, which, despite being renewed for a second season after its April finale, has just been unrenewed by Paramount+ — meaning the saga of young Dex (Patrick Gibson) cutting his teeth in Miami P.D.’s forensics department circa the 1990s has reached an unexpected end. The Hollywood Reporter points to Paramount’s recent merger and leadership change as cause for the reversal.

Wondering about a long-ago movie or a classic TV show? Send your questions to Rick Forchuk at tvweek@canadawide.com

Darren McGavin, right up until his death, was always my favourite TV sleuth. He was perfect as Kolchak: The Night Stalker. It seems that I missed one of his classics, The Outsider, and I wonder if there is some way that I can see it.

E.N., Tsawwassen

The Outsider was a crime drama that ran for just one season on NBC in 1968 and ’69. Darren McGavin, in his first private eye role since Mike Hammer, played David Ross, who, growing up in Puyallup, Washington, ran away from his group home and stumbled into a very troubled life. With no family, and no desire to return to the foster system, David found himself riding the rails as a teen, where he got into an altercation with a railway cop and, in an act of self-defense, accidentally killed the man. The courts didn’t see it that way, and he was given a lengthy prison term, but after six years “inside” got a pardon from the governor.

Soon enough, David Ross was a licensed private investigator getting himself into all kinds of sticky situations. In fact, most episodes began with our hero in big trouble, his voiceover musing something to the effect of, “You’re probably wondering how I got into this mess.” We then flashed back to the start of the case. It was created by Roy Huggins, who is actually from Washington State, and whose other series also embodied the “outsider” theme in various ways, including The Rockford Files and Maverick

There are currently no commercially available DVDs for The Outsider, but you can see the two-hour pilot on YouTube.

THE MORNING SHOW

Wednesday, Apple TV+

The star-studded broadcast news soap returns for a fourth season, as Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) and Alex (Jennifer Aniston) continue their fight for truth, integrity and, of course, ratings.

Some new players this year include Oscar winner Marion Cotillard as Celine Dumont, “a savvy operator from a storied European family” and The Sandman’s Boyd Holbrook as provocative podcaster Brodie. What’s more, The Good Place’s William Jackson Harper plays UBA’s innovative new head of sports, and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons is Alex’s dad.

Also back in the mix is Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, who joined the show in season three as Paul Marks, the ruthless tech billionaire whose proposed merger with UBA would change the face of news . . . and not quite in a good way.

Teasing the new season to Deadline, showrunner

Charlotte Stoudt said: “We get into the world of DeepFakes and AI and the misinformation in the fog of war that we’re seeing now in the Middle East and stuff. We’re looking at who you can trust. And can you trust what you’re seeing? Can you trust yourself? Can you trust your news outlet?”

If you missed the premiere a few weeks back, this quirky thriller from the producers behind Gangs of London casts Game of Thrones alum Alfie Allen as Max, a “free-spirited” British drug trafficker whose illicit dealings take him to the Middle East, where he crosses paths with a mysterious fellow Brit named J.J. (Nautilus’ Shazad Latif). Their relationship doesn’t get off to the sunniest of starts, with J.J. taking Max hostage

and threatening to shoot him through the spine. But soon enough thid unlikely duo must rely on each other, as they unwittingly come to possess a truckload of nuclear materials, landing them in the crosshairs of cartels, terrorists and secret agents — none more relentless than CIA operative Cassie Elliott (Orange Is the New Black’s Samira Wiley). The season’s fifth and final episode premieres this Wednesday.

Heal Thyself?

After debuting in January, this hit drama is already back on the air, having earned itself a full-season order and a slot on Fox’s fall lineup, as Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker) continues piecing together her identity, relationships and career after a memorywiping brain injury.

Amazon’s smash-hit superhero romp The Boys is set to unleash its final season in 2026. But even after Homelander, Billy Butcher et al. say goodbye, the Vought Cinematic Universe will remain alive and kicking (and lasering . . . and debauching) via spinoffs like upcoming prequel Vought Rising starring Jensen Ackles, and, of course, Gen V, which returns for season two on Wednesday with a three-episode premiere.

When we left the misfits of Godolkin University, our crusaders-in-training had saved the day — but were swiftly smacked back down and fractured by betrayal from within their own ranks.

Picking up after a sizable time jump, per the official synopsis: “As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander’s iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But

parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it.”

The aforementioned new dean on campus is played by Midnight Mass alum Hamish Linklater (pictured above). As the actor teased at San Diego Comic-Con (via Collider): “We’re now in Homelander’s America, right? And he’s a dean for that America.”

Meanwhile, expect more cameos from the original series, including Chace Crawford as Aquaman-inspired doofus The Deep. Sadly, one regular character not returning this year is master of magnetism Andre, after star Chance Perdomo passed away in a motorcycle accident between seasons.

The Humour Condition

Timless Absurdity

For a series that debuted 26 years ago and continues to this day, Futurama has surprisingly few seasons under its belt. That’s because Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s quirky sci-fi cartoon about a pizza delivery guy who stumbles into an experimental freezing chamber in 1999 and wakes up 1,000 years later has been cancelled and revived more than once. First came broadcaster Fox, then came cable channel Comedy Central and finally, the show’s current home, streamers Hulu/Disney+.

No doubt, it’s been a bumpy road for Philip J. Fry and the crew at Planet Express. But the fact that Futurama keeps leaving gives us a chance to miss it, and the fact that it keeps coming back is a sign of just how devoted its audience is. As co-creator David X. Cohen said recently while addressing the crowd at San Diego Comic-Con (via Variety): “You are the collective superhero who has saved us so many times in the past.”

A volcano is about to explode! Fry confronts a rival for Leela’s love! And Dr. Zoidberg is rising up to heaven?! The excitement might be too much! You’ve been warned.” Cohen also revealed during the Comic-Con panel that this season will include a deep-dive into Fry’s past in the 20th century, plus a guest appearance by NBA player Victor Wembanyama in the premiere.

Finally, for the first time in the show’s Disney era, instead of a weekly rollout, all 10 episodes will be released at once this Tuesday. Offering advice to fans who might be confused about adjusting their viewing habits, Cohen quipped: “You just sit down and you watch each episode eight times!”

HAUNTED HOTEL

Friday, Netflx

Netflix’s latest foray into edgy animation invites viewers for an extended stay at the Undervale — a hotel as silly as it is spooky. The joint is run by Katherine (Happy Endings’ Eliza Coupe), who in addition to the usual headaches of keeping a business afloat must contend with the fact that this particular lodging is jampacked with ghosts. Oh, and she’s a single mom, to boot!

Luckily, Katherine gets some unexpected help when her estranged brother Nathan (SNL legend Will Forte) comes back into her life . . . as a member of the undead. Other cast members include The Righteous Gemstones’ Skyler Gisondo and Westworld’s Jimmi Simpson.

The series hails from Matt Roller, a writer who previously distinguished himself on Rick and Morty. Speaking of which, his old Rick and Morty boss Dan Harmon is onboard here as an executive producer, alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home scribe Chris McKenna. As Roller said via an official statement: “I’m thrilled to be working with Netflix and an amazingly talented cast and crew to bring to life the stories of the dead, the evil and the struggling hospitality workers at the Undervale Hotel.”

Meanwhile, Netflix’s director of adult animation, Billy Wee, hails the new show as nothing less than “wildly inventive.”

Best in Shows

TV’s annual celebration of itself returns to fête the best that cable, streaming and broadcast have to offer. As usual these days, it’s cable and streaming leading the pack for the Academy. Topping the list is mind-bending workplace thriller Severance, which has slowly grown into the most-buzzed series on television — reflected by its 27 nominations, including Best Drama. (Not a bad return on investment for a show that reportedly costs Apple TV+ upwards of $20 million per episode.) Another Apple series that’s looking to clean up (but, on the comedy side) is Seth Rogen’s Hollywood-skewering The Studio, which is up for 23 trophies. Meanwhile, HBO too has plenty of dogs in the fight thanks to DC Comics sensation The Penguin (with 24 nods), existential vacation dramedy The White Lotus (23) and — despite a decidedly mixed response among fans and critics to season two — video game thriller The Last of Us (16). Viewers are taken on a journey through the history of Black representation on television via this provocative twopart docuseries from actor, writer and producer Issa Rae, showcasing how Black artists and creators both shaped and revolutionized the medium while confronting the systemic challenges that have often undermined their contributions. From early stereotypical portrayals of African-Amercians in The Amos ’n Andy Show to today’s more authentic and complex narratives, director Giselle Bailey highlights

how the makers of Black television have not only survived but thrived, despite the industry’s early reluctance to fully recognize their power and creativity. Among those who share their perspectives are such TV titans as Oprah Winfrey, Shonda Rhimes and Tyler Perry and Rae herself.

Seen & Heard’s first episode explores how television networks traditionally targeted Black audiences to build ratings, only to abandon those viewers as soon as it proved to be convenient — a pattern that was woefully repeated. “We wanted to make a comprehensive history and showcase, with evidence, that this is how they built the success of their networks on our backs, and we almost don’t have anything to show for it as a result,” Rae said while promoting the doc at SXSW. “It’s tragic, and history repeats itself.”

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Kaitlin Olson returns for a second season of comedic crime-solving in High Potential

S CRIME SCENE OF THE

HIGH POTENTIAL

Tuesday, 10 p.m., CTV & ABC

ingle mom Morgan Gillory was working as a cleaning lady at an LAPD precinct when she quickly cracked a case that had detectives stumped. As it happened, Morgan (played by Kaitlin Olson) has a unique mind and an IQ of 160, categorized as a “high potential individual,” and her ability to connect dots others miss led her to be brought aboard the force as a crimesolving consultant. So began the first season of High Potential, a murder-ofthe-week procedural crime drama with a twist of comedy.

“I didn’t think I was interested in doing an hour-long procedural on a network, but I read the script and I just fell in love with the character,” Olson said in a recent interview with Deadline, crediting showrunner Drew Goddard

(who based the project on French series HPI ) for pulling the show’s seemingly disparate elements together. “It’s certainly hard to find that balance of the perfect tone between a true crime procedural and levity, humanness and comedy, but he did a really wonderful job,” she added. “For something like this, you need to buy into the fact that there is an actual crime that has been committed or there’s been a murder and there’s real danger, and you also need to really trust the police department and not have them just be goofy. So, if you lean too far into the comedy, I think you don’t buy into the story. It’s just not realistic anymore.”

L-R: Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), Lev “Oz” Özdil (Deniz Akdeniz), Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) and Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie).

For Olson, who’s played Sweet Dee in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for 17 seasons and counting — along with a few seasons as a similar character in The Mick — High Potential offered an opportunity to stretch out and showcase her dramatic chops. “I wanted to create a character that was very well-rounded, and there’s a lot going on in her life, she’s always overwhelmed,” Olson explained. “There’s always a lot going on in her brain, and sometimes she’s able to laugh at herself. She definitely feels fine making fun of people, especially when they’re underestimating her, so there’s comedy in that. That’s just human nature. I think that the best character-driven dramatic pieces of material, whether it’s TV or movies, have comedy sprinkled in, because that’s life. There are funny moments and there are snarky things to be said that can be funny, and you have to be able to laugh in dark times. That’s just the way the world works, it’s also just

“I wanted to create a character that was very well-rounded, and there’s a lot going on in her life, she’s always overwhelmed.”

more fun to watch. I wanted people to fall in love with this woman and really root for her. If it was just serious all the time, I think you’d feel like you’re watching a TV show.”

While Morgan is the mother of three, Olson is likewise raising two sons alongside her husband (and Always Sunny co-star) Rob Mac. As she told USA Today, portraying a working mom is one element of the character that hasn’t required much stretching. “I’m doing it the way every mom does it,” says Olson of juggling her maternal responsibilities with two TV shows. “You show up, you get it done, and then you go home and make dinner for your kids. I just do that all year round.” ■

Kaitlin Olson returns for a second season as Morgan Gillory , whose unique mind has made her an asset to the LAPD.
Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) looks for clues at the funeral of murdered Arconia doorman Lester.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING

Tuesday, Disney+

fter four seasons of Manhattan-based murder and mayhem, one has to wonder if perhaps the residents of the Arconia should just move. Nevertheless, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) have stuck it out this far, and when their doorman turns up dead, the crime-loving trio knows better than to accept it as an accident.

When Only Murders in the Building first debuted in late summer 2021, it immediately garnered a 100 per cent rating on the RottenTomatoes.com Tomatometer, a metric used to quantify critics’ opinions regarding various specific films and TV series. Forty episodes and seven Primetime Emmys later, the series still holds an average Tomatometer reading of 97 per cent across all four seasons.

Hoping for another hit season as it crosses the 50-episode threshold, the fifth continues its longstanding tradition of packing big-name talent into the cast. This year’s major addition — introduced, as most new cast members have been, during the previous season’s finale — is Madam Secretary star Téa Leoni. “I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman told Deadline of Leoni’s role. “She’s an extension of the little news report in episode nine that Mabel makes note of at the hospital,” Hoffman elaborated, adding that Leoni’s character, Sofia Caccimelio, “is the wife of the Dry

Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well.”

While dry cleaners are not typically considered to be dangerous, the Caccimelios do have ties to organized crime within the Big Apple, and are particularly intertwined with the Caputo crime family, mentioned at least once throughout the series to date.

As is always the case for Only Murders in the Building, Hoffman reiterates that much of the risk is

simply “involved in helping” to solve the crimes, but he made sure to add that “there are some moves that might come in season five that change the whole equation.”

This season’s murder hits close to home, with longtime Arconia doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca) the latest victim in an unsolved murder. “After their beloved doorman, Lester, dies under suspicious circumstances, Charles, Oliver and Mabel refuse to believe it was an accident,” reads the new season’s logline. “Their investigation plunges them into the shadowy corners of New York and beyond — where the trio uncovers a dangerous web of secrets connecting powerful billionaires, old-school mobsters and the mysterious residents of the Arconia. The trio discovers a deeper divide between their storied city they thought they knew and the new New York evolving around them — one where the old mob fights to hold on as newer, even more dangerous players emerge.”

Meanwhile, fans can expect familiar faces from previous

seasons, including Michael Cyril Creighton as Arconia resident and unabashed cat-lover Howard Morris; Meryl Streep as actress (and Oliver’s new bride) Loretta Durkin-Putnam; Da’Vine Joy Randolph as NYPD detective Donna Williams, who always

Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, Keegan-Michael Key, Logan Lerman, Dianne Wiest, Beanie Feldstein, Jermaine Fowler and Bobby Cannavale. As usual, info on their characters is being kept tightly under wraps.

Still, amid all the new characters and chaotic plot twists, it’s nice to know that the show has achieved a level of stability that is relatively uncommon in the fickle world of streaming — something Hoffman attributes to the reflective, conversational tone of the show.

“The ‘meta’ nature of it . . . seems to be one constant theme for the show,” Hoffman added. “The part of it that really surprises me is that it’s able to hold so much . . . I can’t believe the way in which these three can find their ways comedically and dramatically but also hold . . . all of that meta ‘wink-wink.’”

In an interview with Variety, Hoffman offered some clues about the new season, hinting that “we do something new, we pull from the headlines of New York today. That’ll be a tease, and you’ll have to figure out what I mean by that. But very specifically in ways that are very current right now. And also we go back to the theme that’s always started this, the classic-meetsmodern and old versus new.”

seems to be catching up to the trio; Richard Kind as “Stink Eye Joe,” a.k.a. eyepatch-wearing neighbour Vince Fish; and Nathan Lane as Teddy Dimas, last seen way back in season two.

Added Hoffman: “This is very much, what is the power game going on in New York that might be reflective of a little bit of what’s going on in the country. And in our own way, we are sort of pointing out some interesting dynamics about who gets the power and who has the power? Who had the power? Who will get it now? And what does our trio do if they’re smack dab in the middle of that? So I hope you enjoy it. We wink at a lot of things that way throughout the season.” ■

s the old axiom goes, mother knows best. But does she really?

That question is at the heart of The Girlfriend, a gripping psychological thriller based on the debut novel from Michelle Frances that centres on Laura (Robin Wright), a celebrated figure in the art world who runs a prestigious London gallery. From the outside looking in, her life is as perfect as it is affluent, with a happy marriage to attentive husband Howard (Waleed Zuaiter) and a close relationship with their only child, son Daniel (Laurie Davidson) — to say nothing of a lavish lifestyle that includes a posh London townhouse and an oceanfront mansion in Majorca.

However, everything begins to unravel for Laura when Daniel introduces his parents to his new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke). That first meeting is marked by some awkward moments, and Laura begins to suspect that Cherry isn’t who she claims to be. Those suspicions grow, eventually to extreme proportions, as Laura goes to increasingly unhinged lengths to prove that her misgivings are founded.

“She feels suspicious of this girl from the get-go, because she’s feeling the white lies . . . but this just goes to another level,” Wright — who also directed the series’ episodes — told NBC’s Today

“Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective,” notes the series synopsis, highlighting the show’s distinguishing characteristic: much like HBO’s The Affair, as the story plays out, viewers see events from the perspective of both Laura and Cherry to demonstrate that two people can have vastly differing recollections of the same event.

In order to portray this, Wright was required to shoot the same scenes twice, in subtly different ways, in order to illustrate the women’s contrasting perspectives.

“It was almost like doing arithmetic,” she explained. “You know, we had the script supervisor make two lists. ‘These are the angles we’d like to do from this perspective, and then go to the other side of the room and shoot this way, and go closer on Cherry, and maybe change the dialogue a little bit.’ It’s the way we live in life, it’s the way individuals perceive, ‘Did that really happen that way? Was it really said in that tone?’ And that’s what the show is about.”

Appearing alongside Wright on Fox 10 Phoenix, Cooke discussed the power dynamic between these two powerful women. “It’s about two

women who sort of go head to head,” Cooke said. “They are both trying to hold onto the affections of this man.”

Caught in the middle of this psychological tug of war is Daniel, who is more or less oblivious to the tensions arising between his girlfriend and his mother. “He loves both women hugely, and I think what he finds wonderful in Cherry he recognizes in his mother, and thinks, ‘Oh my god, those two are going to get on like a house on fire. Two brilliant women who I love, so why wouldn’t they love each other?’ And he just gets it so wrong,” Cooke said.

According to Wright, portraying conflicting versions of events lends an ambiguity that allows viewers to draw their own conclusions — which might not always be for the right reasons. “It’s how you perceive it based on your emotionality,” Wright said. “It could be triggered from the past that makes you suspicious of a Cherry. Cherry doesn’t like to be told no, and she’ll do everything in her power to keep this boyfriend that she loves and that she feels she wants to spend the rest of her life with. And the mother is just like, ‘Over my dead body.’”

‘‘

She feels suspicious of this girl from the get-go, because she’s feeling the white lies . . . but this just goes to another level.”

For Cooke, acting opposite an actor who is also her director was a revelatory experience, allowing both her and Wright the freedom to make bold acting choices. “So Robin’s in the scene playing Laura, but she’s also giving me very intricate, nuanced direction whilst we’re in the scene,” recalled Cooke. “So that actually helped me be really comfortable with going to the extreme . . . it was really kinetic.”

When filming had wrapped, Wright had a wealth of material when it came time to put the episodes together in the editing room. “I could choose, how severe do I want Cherry to be in her rage here? How emotional do I want her to be with Daniel as she’s telling a big white lie to him about her past?” she said. “So it’s about suspicions. And are my suspicions right, and god, I need to get to the bottom of ‘Am I right?’ And [Cherry] just refuses to relent. She’s gonna win.” ■

Robin Wright not only stars in psychological thriller The Girlfriend, but also directed all six episodes.
Cherry (Olivia Cooke) hasn’t been entirely forthcoming with Laura about some circumstances in her past.

BLACK RABBIT

Thursday, Netfli

Brotherhood is a concept that is, at its heart, rooted in a common bond. Whether blood brothers, fraternity brothers, religious brothers (such as monks) or natural brothers through family connection or DNA, “a brother’s love,” as stated by Delroy Lindo’s character in the 2000 film Gone in 60 Seconds, “is a brother’s love.”

When it all comes down to brass tacks, a brother’s bond is a precious one that can provide comfort and security in the toughest times. Unfortunately, it can cause the utmost trouble when weaponized.

Black Rabbit, Netflix’s new limited series, stars two familiar faces — Jude Law (The Young Pope) and Jason Bateman (Ozark) — as New York City brothers who struggle to keep their heads above water while navigating their complicated and potentially dangerous relationship.

The series, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International

Film Festival, follows “Jake [Law], the owner of the Black Rabbit restaurant and bar,” who “floats from back-of-house to front-ofhouse with confidence, knowing everyone’s name and drink order. His short-term goals are a glowing review and Michelin star, though his larger plan is expansion,” the TIFF description reads.

“His poise and intentions are tested when his ne’er-do-well brother Vince [Bateman] returns home. With Vince comes debt, trauma and drama that are set to impact his brother’s plans for the Black Rabbit,” the description continues.

Both Law and Bateman are highly involved in the series, with each actor executive producing alongside series co-creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman, who are jointly known for co-producing the 2024 true crime action flick The Order (in which Law starred). Bateman also directs the first two of the series’ eight episodes.

And while both Law and Bateman were tied to the project early on, Bateman told Netflix’s Tudum that they did not initially have official roles assigned to them.

Jude Law stars as the owner of a Big Apple hotspot whose sketchy brother (Jason Bateman) returns, bringing trouble with him

“When Jude and I were first talking about our roles, there wasn’t a decision yet about who was going to play which part,” Bateman said. “We both agreed that I usually play the character that he’s playing: the one who doesn’t make bad decisions all the time. Wouldn’t it be interesting if I didn’t play that character this time?”

“On the page, Vince is volatile, unpredictable, he has this reputation for blowing things up literally and emotionally,” Law added. “And what’s extraordinary is, of course, Jason brings to it this innocence,

BOND OF BROTHERS

‘‘
It’s really about these brothers who love each other but don’t match — one’s a screw-up, and the other is much more buttoned up. Everybody’s either got a sibling or a friendship where you love being with one another, but it’s kind of dangerous; where that person usually gets you in trouble but they’re really exciting to be around.’’

this beautiful likability. The fact is, you understand why this guy gets away with it.”

“It’s really about these brothers who love each other but don’t

match — one’s a screw-up, and the other is much more buttoned up,”

Bateman elaborated to Tudum about his and Law’s character dynamic.

“Everybody’s either got a sibling

or a friendship where you love being with one another, but it’s kind of dangerous; where that person usually gets you in trouble but they’re really exciting to be around.”

As for how the creators first engaged with the project, Tudum reports that the pair initially began by imagining the ideal setting, Black Rabbit itself, before stepping out to test their lead characters’ bond.

“We just started talking about setting a TV show in a restaurant — a scene we’ve always been captivated and intoxicated by — and what would that mean as a backdrop,” Susman told Tudum. “Then we got to talking about characters and brothers. We both have siblings and were interested in exploring the idea that you’re one person with your sibling and someone else in the world; and that no matter what you do or where you go in life, your childhood dynamic can be really hard to escape.”

Black Rabbit also stars Sopé Dirisu (Gangs of London) as musician and businessman Wes; Cleopatra Coleman (Infinity Pool ) as interior designer Estelle; Dagmara Dominczyk (Succession) as Val, Jake’s philanthropist ex-wife; Odessa Young (The Staircase) as Gen, a New York tattoo artist and friend of the brothers; and Chris Coy (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) and Coda Oscar winner Troy Kotsur as bookies known to the brothers. ■

IRISH BLOOD

Acorn TV

QSpeaking as both a star and executive producer, this show is a pulpy mystery, a family drama and an absurdist comedy. Was that a tough tonal equilibrium to strike?

AOne of the things I loved about the first draft that came in was the quirky nature. But then, I also wanted to make sure what I really focused on was grounding it, so that it felt real. Although there is a lightness, it’s an emotionally rich drama . . . There’s a fine balance, but I felt like if we kept everything as real as possible, then you could go as wild as you wanted with dream and fantasy [sequences]. And, somehow, it worked.

Q Outlandish as the show can be, Irish Blood is really about that grounded, universal thing of seeing our parents in a different light after we grow up . . .

A I think that you are spot-on. I play a woman who is hardened. She sleeps with men without even paying attention. She’s not close to anyone but her mom. And that is because her dad, when she was 10 years old — they had the best relationship in the world — he abruptly abandons her. It just shakes her to her core — and when he left her, she thought he beat her mom up.

So, she hates him . . . but she’s so confused. Then, when she gets this mysterious communication from him after 30 years of no word, she jumps on a plane, goes to Ireland and it’s like that same little girl is trying to find her daddy. Even though she’s so tough now and she doesn’t need anybody, the little girl in

her is just desperate for her daddy. And while she’s trying to find her dad, she’s also trying to find herself, because she has completely been shut down. She’s a powerful and successful attorney, but she doesn’t have a ton of joy in her life . . .

QHow exactly has Fiona changed by the end of this surreal Irish odyssey?

AI think she’s softened. When you find her in L.A., she’s buttoned-up and has makeup on and does her job and is sort of a tough cookie. And then when she gets [to Ireland], she doesn’t have time for makeup. She’s functioning on survival mode. She starts to meet family members, this whole world has opened up to her . . . and she starts to feel family. Even though she’s been so close to her mom [back in America] — she starts to feel a sense of belonging in a way that I don’t know if she did before. She starts to become more human . . .

QYou had so much success so early on in your career. Looking back,

With all six episodes now streaming via Acorn, Irish Blood casts Silverstone as a jaded L.A. divorce lawyer who gets a message from her estranged dad and flies to Ireland to suss out why he abandoned her as a child — only to stumble across one very quirky criminal conspiracy.

what was it like finding yourself as an actor when you were in such an intense Hollywood spotlight from the get-go?

AA lot of it was hard — and a lot of it was all just bizarre and fascinating. The first few years before I started booking stuff, I got told “No” all the time. What was good about that was I got better and better as an actor . . .

But I didn’t have any intentions of being in film or movies — I was just a theatre nerd. I think I found my people in artists because they were just so much more juicy and raw. When I was a little girl and I was in acting class — I was 12 and they were, like, 16 or 15 or 18 — and I remember they would cry about their family and they were processing real stuff. That’s what I was attracted to. I loved that group of people. Then, when I got asked to come to L.A. with that group, I didn’t even know what I was doing — I just knew if it’s more of what I’m doing in these classes, then “Yeah!” That was the journey. It doesn’t matter what happens, it was just doing this thing that I loved.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
