Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.
Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.
A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

With Saturday Night Live’s celebratory 50th season in the rearview mirror, the venerable sketch show gets back to business in season 51 — albeit amid much uncertainty, given speculation about 80-year-old Lorne Michaels’ succession plan, and the future of late-night TV in general after CBS cancelled The Late Show
The new season finds Michaels doing one of his occasional resets, with several cast members let go to make way for some newbies. Those exiting are Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker and Emil Wakim, along with long-timers Heidi Gardner (after eight seasons) and Ego Nwodim (seven).
The five new arrivals are Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson, Canadian Veronika Slowikowska and Ben Marshall, part of the comedy trio known as Please Don’t Destroy. With the changes, SNL now has a sprawling 17-member ensemble that includes 10 repertory players and seven featured players. This isn’t the first time that Michaels has radically overhauled the cast. In 1985, he introduced a new group that skewed young, including Anthony Michael Hall and Robert Downey, Jr. That season was a bust, but the following year he cleaned house and
re-energized the show with the likes of Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman. Nearly a decade later, Michaels shook things up again by firing Adam Sandler and Chris Farley (arguably SNL’s most popular stars at that point) to make way for new blood. Further cast overhauls came in 1995 and 2006, placing this latest one right on schedule — and right in line with his philosophy about bringing in new talent to keep the show relevant.
“Change is good,” Michaels proclaimed during a recent interview. “The show has always brought people in from different ages and different generations and it’s how it revives itself.”

Following in his footsteps is Tony Shalhoub, a familiar face on television thanks to roles in Wings, Monk and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, who debuts his own foodbased travelogue this week.
In Breaking Bread, Shalhoub embarks on a global journey,
from Brazil to Tokyo, with a focus on bread. This simple comfort food is “the foundation for any shared meal,” and the series follows him as he makes and breaks bread with an array of people from a diverse array of countries and cultures, from flatbread to focaccia and all points in between. “I’ve long believed that the simple act of breaking bread has the power to bring people together,” says Shalhoub. “It’s been wonderful to partner with CNN on my mission to illuminate and celebrate our shared humanity at a time that it is so urgently needed.”

Weren’t they going to do a Dr. Quinn reboot?
D.N., Vancouver Star Jane Seymour did develop and shop a revival of her iconic frontier drama Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993-1998) — but apparently there were no takers. That said, fans are about to get the next best thing, as it’s been announced that season five of Seymour’s current crime dramedy, Harry Wild, will feature very special reunion with Joe Lando, who played her Dr. Quinn love interest, Byron. He’ll play Pierce Kennedy, a charming pathologist and “natural ally” of Seymour’s titular sleuth. That new season won’t hit streamer Acorn TV till 2026. But before that, a two-part special will debut Monday, November 24.
Are they really just ending The Summer I Turned Pretty? It seems so soon for such an amazing, unforgettable show!
E.N., Coquitlam Prime Video’s young adult rom-dram has, indeed, wrapped up with an 11-episode third season that debuted on the streaming service back in July. Luckily, that will not be the end for Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and her bittersweet
coming-of-age saga based on the novels of Jenny Han
Speaking at an event celebrating the series finale, Han herself (who is also the creator of the TV show) announced that there will be a feature film that continues the story of Belly and the two Fisher brothers (Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno) who both stole a piece of her heart.
“There is a big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to
support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”
The final season, of course, ended with Belly and Conrad (Briney) reuniting in Paris, and pledging their love. Fittingly, the event at which Han announced the forthcoming movie also took place in the City of Light.
The film will hit Prime Video at a date still TBA.
Are they doing any more seasons of Obi-Wan Kenobi ? That one was my favourite of the Star Wars shows . . .
D.H., Kelowna Since that Disney+ miniseries’ 2022 debut, there’s been some chatter here and there about the possibility of continuing the adventures of the titular Jedi master, as played by Emmy winner Ewan McGregor. Alas, nothing is imminent.
Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Obi-Wan Kenobi. WRITE TO: Ask
That said, McGregor himself
had a flutter of inspiration to bring the character back recently when he was watching another Star Wars TV show: roundly acclaimed spy thriller Andor
“I missed it when it came out. I always come to things late,” McGregor said at Fan Expo Chicago this past August (via Entertainment Weekly). “I watched the first episode of it at home with my little boy and then I realized what everyone was talking about . . . I watched all of the first season and all of the second season just on my own without him because I just couldn’t wait to get through it all.”
This led the Scottish actor to imagine joining the ensemble . . . before remembering that Andor ends right where 2016 big-screen pic Rogue One begins — a film in which Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) bites the space dust.
“I got really excited. I was thinking, ‘I think I’m in this timeline, I think I could be in season three!’ And then I realized, ‘Oh no . . . there can’t be a season three!’”

I feel like I remember the movie The Stepford Wives very well, but when I came across it recently on one of the streaming movie channels, I noticed something missing. I always recalled it as the film where the person who played Ginger, the movie star on Gilligan’s Island, got her start . . . but watching it recently, she wasn’t even in it.
G.P., Burnaby
AThe memory can be a most unreliable tool sometimes. The actress to whom you refer is Tina Louise. She did indeed play movie star Ginger Grant on Gilligan’s Island (1964-1967). And it was actually several years later that she played the character of Charmaine in The Stepford Wives, a 1975 sci-fi thriller in which all the women in a small Connecticut town were replaced by subservient robots. The screenplay was written by William Goldman (The Princess Bride) based on a novel by Ira Levin (Rosemary’s Baby).
In terms of why you couldn’t locate her in your viewing, perhaps we can chalk it up to a case of mistaken identity, so to speak. There was a remake of The Stepford Wives in 2004 that starred Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler, Glenn Close and Lorri Bagley. (Bagley played Louise’s role of Charmaine in that film.) Directed by Frank Oz, this version was much more comedic in tone (not to mention, much less acclaimed). It’s possible that you got the two films a little jumbled in your mind, watched the 2004 remake and wondered where Tina Louise was. Well, where she was . . . was back in 1975!

Based on the novel by Ruth Ware, The Woman in Cabin 10 follows Lo Blacklock, a journalist who sets sail on a luxe yacht for a travel writing gig. But as she’s soaking up the sun and sangria, Lo sees

Alas, she’s the only witness . . . and no one believes her. “The fear of not being believed is perennial, unfortunately,” author Ware told Tudum. “Cabin 10, at its heart, is about a woman who experiences something wrong, reports it truthfully and isn’t taken seriously because of who she is. Too many people know what that feels like and I think we want vindication for ourselves as much as Lo.”

Wealth, power and the inscrutable human heart collide in this Turkish romance when Osman (Engin Akyürek), a self-made man who rose from nothing, and Nihal (Aslı Enver), the savvy scion of an “old money” dynasty, find themselves squaring off in the boardroom . . . before making their way to the bedroom.
Best known for creating NBC hit The Blacklist, Jon Bokencamp clearly has a knack for penning dark, eccentric criminals. He treads into similar creative territory with this new series, wherein a plane filled with the absolute worst the U.S. penal system has to offer goes down in the remote expanses of Alaska, setting a slew of violent offenders loose on a small town. Tasked with running them to ground is U.S. marshal Frank Remnick (Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke), a grizzled agent who left the big city behind and settled down in this snowy, sleepy little outpost to raise his family and find some peace.
But now, he’s forced to holster up his guns again to protect the people her cares about most, while also confronting some unresolved darkness from his past.

the frozen wildnerness. Indeed, as you’d have to expect from the makers of The Blacklist, there’s a conspiracy at play here — which enters the story in the form of Sidney (The Magnificent Seven’s Haley Bennett), an outcast CIA agent who has a history with Havlock, and is thus tasked by her bosses to head to Alaska and monitor the situation. Because, no doubt, if the public ever learns the truth behind this crash — and why that flight full of psychopaths was chartered to begin with — heads will roll in the halls of power.
Naturally suspicious of one another, Frank and Sid must forge an uneasy alliance to unravel Havlock’s plan — and round up every other unpredictable con who’s been unleashed. Speaking of which, those eclectic inmates are played by the likes of Westworld’s Clifton Collins, Jr. and Jackass’ Johnny Knoxville.
Inspired by real-life soldier Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, this eight-part series takes viewers inside the life of a young, closeted gay man (Parenthood alum Miles Heizer) who enlists in the U.S. military circa the go-go, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” 1990s.
Netflix bills the show as “an irreverent, offbeat take on the coming-of-age story. Set in the tough, unpredictable world of the 1990s U.S. Marine Corps — when being gay in the military was still illegal — the series follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (Heizer) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine, as they join a diverse group of recruits. Together, this ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits. With sharp wit and plenty of heart, BOOTS is about friendship, resilience and finding your place in the world — even when that

world seems determined to keep you in line or leave you behind.”
Speaking with Attitude magazine, Heizer (a gay man himself) elaborated on the show’s distinct, satirical look at life in combat boots. “Part of the humour is portraying the campy absurdity of these boys doing this extremely masculine thing, joining the Marines — ‘We’re gonna go to war!’ — but simultaneously they’re telling you: ‘Put on your [military] blouse! Mount the thing! Take showers together!’ It’s so gay.”
Rounding out the main cast is The Conjuring’s Vera Farmiga as Cameron’s nothing-less-than-demonic mother. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the series was co-created by Andy Parker (a man who previously explored the quirky nuances of the gay experience via Tales of the City) and produced by late sitcom icon Norman Lear, in his final project.

Ever since Disney bought Fox in 2019, TV aficionados who subscribe to Disney+ have been privy to a slew of mostly holiday-themed specials inspired by Fox’s classic “Animation Domination” cartoons — most prominently and prolifically, The Simpsons. But Family Guy has also chipped in a few over the years, the latest of which arrives on Monday, with this Halloween spectacular.
Not long into the show’s run, Seth MacFarlane and his writers clearly realized that their most unexpectedly compelling duo was evil baby genius Stewie and sardonic, boozy canine Brian.
The boy and his dog take centre stage again here as Stewie and Brian set out to compose a Halloween song; erstwhile, Peter and his pals learn the “deadly consequences” of lying about trick-or-treating.
Sunday, 8:30 p.m., Adult Swim
Since its launch back in 2001, cable network Adult Swim has been a go-to destination for connoisseurs of edgy cartoon yuks. From the early days of Space Ghost and Aqua Teen Hunger Force to the current age of Rick and Morty, the channel has trafficked in series that are not only hilarious, but boldly unpredictable.
One of their most reliable purveyors of that content today is mad Aussie genius Michael Cusack, creator of YOLO and Smiling Friends — the latter of which returns for its third season this week.
If the show has slipped under your radar, the official synopsis reads as follows: “Smiling Friends Inc. is a small company whose main purpose is to
bring happiness and make people smile. The series follows the day-to-day lives and misadventures of its representatives — the lazy, cynical Charlie and the cheerful, optimistic Pim — as they try to cheer up and comfort the troubled people who call their company’s hotline. They receive seemingly simple requests but the jobs turn out to be more complicated than they seem, making it difficult to bring happiness to the world.”
In tonight’s premiere, they tackle the case of “Silly Samuel,” who hopes his grotesquely silly appearance might be solved by medical intervention — only to receive some seriously bad news after meeting with a doctor.
SEASON PREMIERE
The rare cooking competition that feeds the soul as it waters the mouth returns for season nine, welcoming another 10 amateur bakers into the now-iconic Tent to try and whisk up some cakes, pies and cookies that will impress the palates of judges Kyla Kennaley and Bruno Feldeisen. This year’s hopefuls include:
● Dan Vano, 35, a customer success associate from Burnaby, British Columbia
● Dominic Ménard-Bilodeau, 49, a geography teacher from Longueuil, Quebec
● Jennifer Tsang, 24, a masters student from Burnaby, British Columbia
● Jo Mandet, 44, an event planner from Vancouver, British Columbia
● Kavi Chatoorgoon, 48, a pediatric surgeon from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
● Margaret Bose-Johnson, 66, a part-time German teacher from Parkland County, Alberta

● Shaneka Ekanayake, 38, a sales support administrator from Barrie, Ontario
● Tamara Church, 56, a family court counsellor from St. John’s, Newfoundland
● Zoë Weinrebe, 31, a marketing manager from Toronto, Ontario
As usual, your emcees will be comics Ann Pornel and Alan Shane Lewis, the latter of whom summed up the show’s appeal thusly in a 2024 chat with What She Said: “It’s a reality competition show, but they’re not competing against each other. They’re competing against themselves from last week, constantly just trying to improve themselves . . . It’s a very ‘group experience’ and it’s not necessarily biting and trying to conquer the next person. It’s just like, ‘How do we all improve together and get to enjoy it and share with all of Canada?’ ”
Another cross-section of our home and native fams hit the stage to try and guess what that ever-inscrutable survey says. Of course, that’s only part of this classic game show’s appeal; on hand to needle the contestants with a goodnatured quip or two is host-with-thejokes Gerry Dee.

At a time when Washington, D.C., is supplying us with daily intrigue as never before, it almost feels redundant to toss a little more in the mix. Then again, the Ladies of Potomac offer up a considerably less troubling brand of “drama.”
This milestone 10th season brings with it a cast shakeup, as Karen Huger and Mia Thornton depart, while returning players Gizelle Bryant, Ashley Darby, Wendy Osefo, Stacey Rusch and Keiarna Stewart are joined by fresh recruits Tia Glover and Angel Massie. Tia is a British-Nigerian luxury real estate adviser. Angel is an outdoor experiential curator. As Bravo elaborates, Tia is “a mother-of-four whose strong
family values are matched by her sense of humour,” while Angel is “married to an ex-NFL star and brings her family back to Potomac ambitiously looking to grow her business.”
When it comes to the returnees, hijinks will include Ashley looking to move forward with her life after a lengthy divorce process; yet as she wades back into that dating pool, she’ll also have to ask herself some tough questions about what she wants for her own future and that of her children. TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Music City heats up in the premiere of new spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville
9-1-1: NASHVILLE
Thursday, 9 p.m., CTV & ABC
The world of 9-1-1 is expanding with a new spinoff that follows Music City’s emergencies from dispatch to the scene, with 9-1-1: Nashville following first responders as they attend to urgent crises that could only happen in a place like Nashville.
As the network synopsis declares, the series is “a highoctane procedural about heroic first responders, as well as their family saga of power and glamour set in
one of America’s most diverse and dynamic cities.”
The cast includes some real Nashville luminaries, with Grammywinning country artist LeAnn Rimes playing Dixie Bennings, a mother of one of the firefighters. Former Nashville star Kimberly WilliamsPaisley — who, in real life, lives in Music City with her husband, country star Brad Paisley, and their sons — plays Cammie Raleigh, the dispatch call centre operator.
Guest starring in the premiere is country singer Kane Brown, who’s held down co-hosting duties for four successive CMT Music Awards, and made a splash in his first dramatic
TV performance when he appeared in an episode of the CBS drama Fire Country. According to a press release, Brown “proves heroic in a major storyline” in the season premiere, with a scene set at a concert.
Filling out the main cast are Chris O’Donnell (NCIS: Los Angeles) as fire captain and rodeo rider Don Hart; Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy) as Blythe Hart, Don’s wife; Hailey Kilgore (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) as firefighter and singer Taylor Thompson; Michael Provost (The Holdovers) as firefighter and cowboy Ryan Hart; Juani Feliz (Harlem) as firefighter and former surgeon Roxie Alba; and newcomer Hunter McVey as bad-boy firefighter Blue Bennings, Dixie’s son.
Recurring cast includes Gregory Alan Williams (The Righteous Gemstones) as Harold Foster, MacKenzie Porter (The Runarounds) as Samantha Hart and Tim Matheson (Virgin River) as Edward.
Speaking with TV Insider, showrunner Rashad Raisani explained that while “its DNA, of course, is 9-1-1,” he’s taking a soapier approach than the other 9-1-1 shows. “There’s some Succession . . . and some Dynasty slipped in there,” he said. “The show begins with an explosive revelation that affects the central dynamic of a character’s
world. And then we shamelessly use tornadoes to great effect as a metaphor for the storm that has come into these characters’ lives.”
At the heart of the series is the relationship between Don and Blythe, who come from two very different backgrounds. “She comes from money, but there was a fire at her ranch, and she fell for this blue-collar firefighter,”Raisani explained.
“I’m sure I wasn’t her parents’ first pick,” quipped O’Donnell, noting that Don “straddles being a firefighter and then also being in this very high-end, well-known family here in Nashville.”
Meanwhile, Raisani confirmed that Rimes’ character is a “rival” to Blythe. As he recounted, Dixie is a former backup singer “who always felt like she deserved more than she got. As our series starts, she’s going to try and take what’s hers.”
Is Don what she plans to take?
O’Donnell won’t say one way or the other, but he did offer an intriguing response. “Dixie comes from the same place” as his character. “They got to know each other when they were a lot younger.”
Beyond those soap-opera shenanigans, Raisani was also insistent that 9-1-1: Nashville will feature more than enough of the over-the-top disasters that have characterized its predecessors. “We have an Airstream trailer that ends up on top of a bridge and a poor guy on a Segway tour of the city who ends up impaled on a water tower,” Raisani added, revealing he’s also been able to film a crisis in a water park that he first envisioned when working on Lone Star. “We’re going to get a bunch of crazy emergencies where people end up in places where they shouldn’t be,” he shared. ■
“We have an Airstream trailer that ends up on top of a bridge and a poor guy on a Segway tour of the city who ends up impaled on a water tower.”
Jamie Lee Curtis has served up no shortage of iconic performances over the years, from her scream-queen debut in horror classic Halloween to classic comedy caper A Fish Called Wanda to absurdist multiverse drama Everything Everywhere All at Once. Her latest project, however, finds the Academy Awardwinning actress on the other side of the
camera, serving as producer for fact-based drama
The Lost Bus.
The project originated when Curtis read about the bravery of the local community in Paradise, California, during a devastating 2018 wildfire. What she’d read left the actress compelled to make a different kind of cinematic impact. “I read an article in the Washington Post about the book that Lizzie Johnson wrote,” she recalls. Johnson’s book, Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire, recounted, among other stories, how local bus driver Kevin McKay and schoolteacher Mary Ludwig ferried 22 kids through
the flames, ultimately leading them to safety. “I called [producing partner] Jason Blum, and I said, ‘I want to make a film. I think it’ll be the most important thing either one of us does as filmmakers in our lives.’”
To embody McKay and Ludwig, Curtis and Blum secured Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera To helm the nail-biting thriller, they chose British documentarian-turned-director Paul Greengrass, whose depictions of the events in Bloody Sunday, United 93 and Captain Phillips had preserved the authenticity of these real-life incidents. Greengrass was captivated, and immediately took to the assignment. “What I loved about this film was it had those simple human elements of the bus, the schoolteacher, the bus driver and the kids, yet it spoke to something very, very universal,” he says. “The idea of making a film about a wildfire seems so absolutely of our world today — it’s part of the sense that people have all over the world that our world is burning.”

and real-life first responders, as well as filming the scenes mostly at dusk. “Critical to conveying the reality of a large fire is what the light does, because what happens in these large fires is that very quickly the sun gets covered [by smoke] and the light becomes very occluded and strange,” the director explains. “That was by far the hardest challenge. The closest, in reality, to it is magic hour, which is that short time at the very end of the day before the night comes. Generally, it’s like half-an-hour, 40 minutes, so the way we shot the movie was to shoot it basically in a one-hour period a day.”
The film catches Kevin McKay in a moment where he, as a single father, is struggling to connect with his teenage son (played by McConaughey’s real-life son Levi). Juxtaposing McKay’s sense of failure as a parent with his selfless actions that made the difference between life and death were, for the Dallas Buyers Club Oscar winner, defining of his character, as depicted in a scene where McKay answers the call to evacuate the kids at Ponderosa Elementary school.
“Kevin’s just made the biggest decision of his recent life to try to salvage the relationship with his son and pick up his mother and get them to safety,” says McConaughey. “But 35 seconds later, the next biggest decision comes to him. When he hears, ‘We’ve got 22 kids stranded,’ he wants someone else to pick up that call and say, ‘Yeah, I’ve got it,’ but no one does. When he makes that decision, coming right off the back of making the other decision, that was my most memorable scene because it’s doing a 180 after I just did a 180. That’s something Paul likes to do, put compression on your protagonist.”
As in his past films, Greengrass is committed to simulating real circumstances as much as possible. This meant surrounding the actors with real, gas-fuelled fire
Those time constraints worked in the production’s favour when it came to working with 22 children within claustrophobic conditions. “We decided to shoot on a real bus going along real roads with real traffic, with real gas burns so that gave the whole experience a sense of reality,” says Greengrass. “Because it was shot in this very compressed time, it gave it an intensity in the bus that also impacted the kids. There’s a lot of very small children on that bus, and none of them were actors. And lastly, you end up with Matthew and America. I mean, it’s not easy to shoot in a bus. We didn’t have time for them to leave so we all just sat on the bus for hours at a time and bonded.” While the actors experienced extreme conditions to retell this story, their efforts were nothing compared to the sacrifices made in Paradise in 2018. “Kevin’s mother was quite ill and home alone with his son and Kevin still took the decision to go and get those kids,” says Curtis. “That sacrifice was repeated with the first responders, who all had families at home. Every mother who evacuated herself with her kids in the midst of this inferno is a hero. Even the 85 people who lost their lives. It’s a beautiful thing, highlighting Kevin and Mary, but it’s a story of resilience and what’s really important to me, is that today Paradise is surviving and thriving as a community. We’re going to join them in creating a memorial to those lives lost and the town coming together.” ■
Bryan and Sarah Baeumler
tell TV Week why this NEW series stands out from the many televised renos they’ve pulled off before
Sunday, 7 p.m. & 10 p.m., Home Network
etween their work commitments, Bryan and Sarah Baeumler rarely have time to kill, so committing to a show that puts the time between construction shows on-camera seems like a surprising decision.
“I’m a glutton for punishment,” jokes Bryan when we sit down to talk about Building Baeumler, which takes us inside a hotel renovation in the Florida Keys, the
expansion of their Bahamas resort and improving their cottage in Georgian Bay. “We’ve always had this urge to look at projects that are outside of our comfort zone, but more than anything, now we’re really focused on legacy building and what that looks like for our family,” says Sarah. “This next chapter is not the most linear path to take, but that’s what we also enjoy at the end of the season. It’s not going to [end in] a neat little bow with a beautiful, finished reveal. This is our life.” Ahead, TV Week gets the scoop on their latest ambitious, deeply personal endeavour.
These projects could all be individual shows, but instead we get to see them, combined with your home life and your relationship with your children. Was the thinking behind Building Baeumler adding the family aspect to it?
BRYAN: I think it’s a natural progression, and it is real. Twenty years ago, I was on TV renovating basements, bathrooms and kitchens and then started the home-building series. It just progressed to a hotel, and the kids were around. I think for us, it’s just very organic. I mean, the kids are always at work.
SARAH: And nothing ever happens when you think it’s going to happen. So, when opportunities present themselves, Bryan and I are always like, “OK, it’s not the right time, but is this something we want to sink our teeth into?” That’s exactly the case with these projects. And we’re not a family that’s in the same place at the same time. We’re all over the map, travelling with our kids, and that’s what we wanted to showcase as well. It’s very natural and it’s where we are at our stage in life.
You brought up the legacy aspect of it. What is the difference between leaving a legacy and the previous work you’ve done?
BRYAN: A week after we opened the hotel, the pandemic hit and we spent seven, eight months locked up in a 700-square-foot villa with all four of our kids, two dogs, a cat and a chicken. It was a very expensive seven months, but we were there on the island on the beach with the kids 24/7. We were eating healthy, we were outside all the time. You come back into civilization and you realize, there’s something to this: how you live, what you eat, what you do. And at the end of the day, when the bus gets us crossing the street or whatever happens, what’s left? Drywalling how-to videos and a couple of funny shows? What do we want to leave in our wake?
SARAH: You’ll see how we came to this decision, on-camera, because we had some wonderful meetings with mentors of ours. We were blown away by the work that they have done globally, and we had the opportunity to sit down with them and really talk to them about next steps. You’ll see that Bryan and I are not educating people how to renovate their home, but instead we are
the ones learning. And when we talk about the legacy project, we’re walking the audience through these very intimate conversations about how we hope to leave this planet.
Is it fair to say that this opens your relationship up to us in ways we haven’t seen before on TV?
BRYAN: Yeah, a little bit.
SARAH: We’re having conversations with our kids and with each other that I think many people around their dining tables are having. We’re just pulling back the curtain and letting people in on ours.
BRYAN: It ultimately should be inspirational for other people to tackle things that seem too big. We’re not perfect and we prove it over and over again. But it should inspire people to tackle things they didn’t think they could. It’s just about education, learning how to do it and trying to have fun along the way.
Construction and renovation usually tear couples apart. What makes you two different?
BRYAN: Well, we’re not dead yet. See what happens next.
SARAH: The hardest part, with respect to renovating, is that both partners may not be on the same page. Bryan, you do a wonderful job speaking on home shows about really having the difficult discussions about where the money is going to be invested, how it’s going to be spent, and what it means to properly plan and budget.
BRYAN: It’s about being open to those discussions and having those discussions nicely . . . and admitting when I’m wrong. Well, that has not happened yet.
SARAH: Not yet. And I think taking that reset time, which we do, amongst all the builds and the projects. You have to be able to separate. That’s something we are still working on, how to not talk about the build or projects 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
You bring the cameras in for all of this. Are you now so oblivious to them that it’s like, come document it all?
SARAH: I think that for us, and for the kids even, it’s been
‘‘
It ultimately should be inspirational for other people to tackle things that seem too big. We’re not perfect and we prove it over and over again. But it should inspire people to tackle things they didn’t think they could. It’s just about education, learning how to do it and trying to have fun along the way.”
wonderful to have that relationship with our crew. It’s a very small crew. We travel with them. When we were doing the Bahamas project, they were basically living on the island with us.
BRYAN: Like aunts and uncles.
SARAH: For our kids, they had said goodbye to grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles to move to the Bahamas. The people they sat with at the dinner table every single night was our film crew. So, that rapport and relationship is very comfortable. And our film crew is very respectful. They understand boundaries.
What can people learn about the way you approach life and work, specifically based on what they see in this new show?
BRYAN: Carpe diem. You’re only here for so much time. You might as well make the most of it. Don’t hide in your basement watching TV all day.
SARAH: And it might not always be comfortable, but that’s OK. When you’re put in those situations where you’re not comfortable, that’s when you really grow. So, take the risks. It’s usually worth it in the end . . . but budget well! ■

here is nothing meagre about Maigret. First introduced to the public by author Georges Simenon in his 1931 novel Pietr the Latvian, French police detective Jules Maigret — thanks to his Belgian creator — paved the way for a new literary genre: detective fiction. Now, after 75 novels, 28 short stories and more than 30 actors having portrayed the detail-oriented, streetwise policeman onscreen, Maigret is finding a new home on PBS, via the U.S. public broadcaster’s long-running Masterpiece imprint.
The series, reimagined for modern audiences, focuses on the titular Parisian chief inspector, who,
per the official synopsis, “heads the elite police unit known as La Crim, responsible for investigating all serious crime in and around Paris.”
In this new iteration, Benjamin Wainwright (Belgravia: The Next Chapter) inhabits the famed sleuth. Wainwright, in fact, is the 35th actor to portray the character on
screen, a lengthy and prestigious list that includes the likes of Charles Laughton, Richard Harris and, most recently, Mr. Bean’s Rowan Atkinson. According to PBS, Maigret “is an unconventional young detective with something to prove, relentless in his investigations, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and a matchless knowledge of Paris and its inhabitants.”
Largely filmed in Budapest, Hungary, in order to evoke the look and feel of Paris without the luxury price tag, this newest iteration of the beloved character’s story is the first adaptation to be set against a contemporary backdrop, thus bringing cases and character quirks to the forefront in a more relatable way for modern audiences. And with just three main cases spanning all six episodes of the series’ first season, viewers may also appreciate this departure from the neatly arranged one-case-per-episode model that has become standard issue for the traditional one-hour procedural.
“Maigret will be a perfect addition to Masterpiece’s lineup of Mystery! shows,” Susanne Simpson, executive producer
and head of scripted content for Masterpiece, said in statement, promising that “our audience is going to love Inspector Maigret and his unique style of crime solving.”
Just as the character has been updated, so too is the way viewers will experience Paris, from the Ritz to the riff-raff, in a departure from the oft-idealized, romantic take on the city that is so often portrayed on both screen and page.
“Maigret inhabits a vividly realized Paris not often seen on camera,” PBS teases, “that takes us from the glitzy upper-class world of luxury hotels and mansions to local bourgeois bistros and bars and the underground haunts of the professionally criminal.”
Of course, as many fans of Simenon’s work or adaptations will already be aware, Paris is frequently positioned as a central character within the Maigret novels. In fact, this focus on a location and the social fabric therein is key to Simenon’s oeuvre, meaning that — even with the updated take on its main

character — Maigret manages to channel the spirit of its author 36 years after his death at home in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Joining Wainwright in bringing Maigret ’s characters to life are Stefanie Martini (The Last Kingdom) as Louise Maigret, wife of the leading man, while Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners), Reda Elazouar (Sex Education), Shaniqua Okwok (The Flatshare), Kerrie Hayes (Tin Star) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders) portray Maigret’s fellow Paris-based cops, who together make up the chief inspector’s own unofficial task force known as “Les Maigrets.” ■

STARRING: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, Andre Tricoteux
In the wake of critical acclaim after its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Dwayne Johnson has been surrounded by Oscar buzz over his performance in this intense docudrama from director Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems). The pro wrestler erstwhile known as The Rock stars as Mark Kerr, telling the gritty true story of the former mixed martial arts and UFC champion who dominated the sport during the late 1990s. While Kerr was instrumental in building the popularity of MMA fighting in its early days, all those battles in the ring took their toll on his body, leading him to develop a dependence on painkillers. Emily Blunt portrays his then-wife, Dawn, who faced her own torment as she helplessly watched him spiral into addiction.
STARRING: Guy Pearce, DeWanda Wise, Bill Pullman, Raoul Max Trujillo
This “genre-bending western” from director Ned Crowley follows a mysterious woman (DeWanda Wise) in the 1849 Arizona Territory, accompanying a young girl with seemingly supernatural powers, whose touch can be fatal. With the aid of a rugged, troubled doctor (Guy Pearce), she must protect the child from an ambitious preacher (Bill Pullman) who wants to exploit her abilities.
STARRING: Larry Fessenden, Arielle Friedman, Shane Jensen, Anya Krawcheck
Imagine Lassie as a horror movie, and you have the premise for this inventive film from Ben Leonberg, making his feature directorial debut. A loyal dog moves to a rural family home with his owner, only to discover supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most.

QAs much as you have spooky supernatural elements in this show, is it safe to say you’re just using that as an entry point to explore how the traumas of our youth shape the adults we become?
AI reckon. I just turned 40 this year and there is a funny thing that happens — your teenage years become part of your “story” . . . In your 20s, you see your teens as a fairly evolved time in your life, until you get to your late 30s and you realize how much of a child you were, and you can have compassion for that child — for whatever they did. If you don’t, it will burst out in weird ways; it’s a really important thing to have a reckoning with at some point in your life. I think Gracie Darling is definitely talking about that.
And I love the story between my character and her daughter, because that helps to facilitate her own reckoning, her own looking back and dealing with it — facing the ghosts of her past, quite literally.
Q What does the inclusion of ghosts and horror add to the exploration of a universal human experience like that?
A I feel like every kind of storytelling is “true,” in a certain way. Even the most outlandish, crazy thing like South Park, everything’s rooted in the truth. The really important thing is the emotional ride the audience gets taken on, and what feelings it is evoking from you as the viewer.
Q
There are lots of flashbacks to Joni’s teen years. How much did you study what your young counterpart, Eloise Rothfield, was doing in her performance?
A vet of the New Zealand and Australian entertainment scenes, Morgana O’Reilly got her break on iconic Aussie soap Neighbours playing spoiled rich girl with a secret heart of gold Naomi, before starring in cult-hit horror flick Housebound as a delinquent sentenced to house arrest in a haunted house. Most recently, she appeared in season three of HBO’s Emmy-winning anthology The White Lotus as fanfave “wellness mentor” Pam.
AWe had a few days where we tried to just hang out. I don’t know whether she was doing this, but I was sort of secretly watching her mannerisms [laughs]. And then the rest is in the script — so at least I know what she’s up to. I sort of thought about it like, every character I’ve ever played has a backstory as a young person — whether you see it or not, it’s there. I trusted that we were going to cut together just fine [in the editing room] . . . and I wanted to make sure that my experience with Joni was as pure as possible without getting too “in my head” about it.
QIs working in horror a different experience on a technical, practical level than acting in other genres?
AHousebound [her 2014 horror comedy] taught me a lot. There’s a certain style of acting which is really fun and it is basically “scared acting.” Creeping down hallways, using the breath, using the idea of, inside,
O’Reilly now leads this eerie drama about a teen who disappears after a séance gone wrong. Child psychologist Joni feels compelled to unravel the mystery — given that her own best friend, Gracie Darling, vanished under identical circumstances 27 years prior.
you just wanna either melt or explode and you have to contain everything . . .
QWhat was it like dropping in for the latest season of The White Lotus? Are you getting recognized on the street?
AIt’s like getting invited to the coolest party ever — and I’ll take it. I’ve been in this business long enough now to know that how “recognized” you are, it really does come in waves. I haven’t ever been a part of something that is such a huge, colossal titan of social impact — but then, conversely, being a fairly small part of that. I feel like I get the best of both worlds, because I get to be part of the tsunami that is White Lotus, but fly under the radar just enough to be lovable and cute and not get s*** on too much [laughs]. I think it’s opened some doors for me, which is amazing.
And I don’t hold my breath, but I keep thinking Pam could work in season four. She works at the hotel, they transfer all the time!
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
