Adventuring with Whole Foods

Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.

Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.

A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

Titans clash in epic western

In untamed and lawless Washington Territory during 1854, two very different families are on a collision course, their fates linked by two crimes, a terrible secret, star-crossed love and a piece of land situated above a rich lode of silver.

That’s the premise of The Abandons, an ambitious new series from Christopher Keyser (HBO’s Julia). At the head of these families are two powerful matriarchs: iron-willed Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson), who will stop at nothing to protect and build the mining fortune she inherited from her husband — and then doubled, thanks to her business acumen and sheer ruthlessness; and Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey), the fierce, faith-driven leader of the Abandons, her found family of orphans and outcasts. Having rescued these lost souls from the fringes of society, she is determined to protect them at any cost.

Constance wants Fiona’s land, but Fiona stubbornly refuses to be driven off the cattle ranch she built in silver-rich Jasper Hollow. With neither woman willing to budge, this sets up an epic clash that echoes the perpetual societal struggle between the haves and the have-nots.

“This first chapter of The Abandons is a classic American story — the frontier, two families both at war and in love with each other, [and] a battle over who owns the land and who makes the rules,” Keyser tells Tudum. “In the middle of murder and revenge and a bit of illicit romance, we get to explore questions we never seem to get away from: What makes a family? How do you stay good in a bad world? And would you change who you are and what you believe in to protect what you love? But in this case, we do it all through the eyes of Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, as two widowed matriarchs battling to survive. And that . . . is really something to watch.”

As a true mega-fan of the books, I’m hoping to see more Dept. Q soon?

K.F., Langley Netflix’s hit cop drama will be back on the case for season two sometime in 2026. Adapted by The Queen’s Gambit creator Scott Frank based on the novels of Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, Dept. Q debuted this past May, centring on Carl Morck (Matthew Goode), a prickly English cop stationed in Scotland who returns from a life-shattering assault to lead a cold-case unit. No word on the new season’s premise, but book two in Adler-Olsen’s series was 2008’s Disgrace, wherein Morck revisits the peculiar deaths of a brother and sister at their summer house circa the late 1980s.

RETURN OF THE RENEGADES?

Just wondering what’s up with that show SAS: Rogue Heroes? One of our favourites, and feels like it’s been awhile!

D.S., North Vancouver It has been confirmed that this stylish, darkly comedic riff on the origins of Britain’s black-ops Special Air Service during the Second World War will return for a third bloody, goofy, suprisingly poignant

season sometime in 2026. Penned by Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight and starring Sinners breakout Jack O’Connell, the show airs on BBC One in the U.K. and streams on Prime Video in Canada — following the factbased exploits of the wild-card soldiers who changed how war was fought, and were in turn forever changed by the fighting of it.

Per reports, the new season opens in 1944, as Paddy Mayne (O’Connell) and his men redirect their unsavoury yet undeniably effective tactics from Italy to France, teaming

up with the French Resistance to raise a little hell in the Nazioccupied country. As Knight teased to the BBC: “Series three picks up as the war enters a critical phase with the Allies mobilizing to liberate France. Way ahead of the advancing frontline, the SAS are doing what they do best, creating chaos and carnage among the defending Axis troops. Never has the war been so bloody and never have the stakes been so high. The Rogue Heroes dare to win, but at what cost to themselves and their souls?”

A FRESH FACE ?

Any update yet on a new season of Poker Face?

D.N., Victoria

The fate of this Columbo-esque mystery is very much up in the air. It was just announced that U.S. streamer Peacock is moving on from the show after two acclaimed, Emmynominated seasons. (The series streams on Citytv+ in Canada.) That said, creator Rian Johnson (best known as the

director of the Knives Out films) is intent on keeping the thriller afloat, and is now shopping it to other platforms. Yet, in a twist befitting the delightfully unpredictable show itself, if Poker Face does land on a new channel, it will do so with a new star. Natasha Lyonne has vacated the role of Charlie Cale, the “human lie detector” who transfers her skills from the poker table to unravelling the myriad criminal conspiracies she stumbles into. Should the show be saved, Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage will take over her sleuthing duties.

Lyonne will remain as an exec producer alongside Johnson; per Deadline, the duo are pitching the show to other networks with eyes on a two-season commitment.

As Lyonne and Johnson said in a statement: “We’ve been germinating this next move together since writing the season-two finale. We love our Poker Face and this is the perfect way to keep it rolling. Give us a beat and we may just see Charlie Cale again down that open highway.”

Wondering about a long-ago movie or a classic TV show? Send your questions to Rick Forchuk at tvweek@canadawide.com

Each Christmas, I try to find new seasonal movies and TV shows to share with my children — but most of the remakes just don’t hold up. Why are the classics continually remade? I don’t think they add anything at all.

O.Y., West Vancouver

The short answer is: “Because they can.” And sometimes it’s just cost-effective. For example, in the case of the more than 50 different renditions of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the intellectual property is in the public domain, so there are no copyright issues. Producers can adapt it free of fees, however they see fit — whether that be via Mickey Mouse, the Muppets, Bill Murray’s Scrooged or, just recently, Apple TV’s musical romp Spirited, starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds

Other classics that are not public domain, but have been revisited nonetheless include It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), reborn as a TV movie in 1977 called It Happened One Christmas, starring Marlo Thomas A Christmas Story (1983) had a sequel in 2022 called A Christmas Story Christmas featuring an all-grown-up version of Ralphie, played by an all-grown-up Peter Billingsley — but it was not particularly well-received. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) got the live-action Jim Carrey treatment in 2000 and the animated Benedict Cumberbatch treatment in 2018, both to mixed critical appraisals.

On the other end of the spectrum, there have been no stabs at reinventing A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) because creator Charles M. Schulz, and now his estate, have forbidden it.

TROLL 2

Monday, Netflx

Debuting three years to the day after the first Troll lumbered onto Netflix, this Godzillaesque creature feature franchise delivers another dose of dark, whimsical, gargantuan action rooted in Norwegian folklore.

The original adventure found paleontologist Nora Tidemann (Ine Marie Wilmann) and her team scrambling to contain an ancient beast unleashed upon their country after a construction project freed it from thousands of years imprisoned beneath the Dovre Mountains.

The “Critics Consensus” on Rotten Tomatoes

summed that film up thusly: “Troll doesn’t rewrite the monster movie rulebooks — but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn’t have to.”

Now, Troll 2 opens to find Nora called back into action alongside political adviser Andreas Isaksen (Kim Falck) and Major Kristoffer (Mads Sjøgård Pettersen) after a new, even more ferocious troll awakens to wreak havoc. As returning director Roar Uthaug informed Tudum: “With the sequel, we are aiming high — expanding the scope, deepening the story and creating a trollsized spectacle like you’ve never seen before.”

Asix-part thriller out of France casts three-time César winner Benoît Magimel (The Piano Teacher) as Franck, a man who heads into the woods with his pals for a hunting weekend. It’s a pastime they’ve enjoyed together for years — but this Sunday, relaxation turns to terror when they cross paths with another group of hunters who suddenly open fire. They manage to kill one of the attackers

and make it back home. Alas, that’s far from the end of this ordeal, as Franck et al. remain in the crosshairs of the mystery men, who mount a campaign of evver-escalating harassment that will only end when the hunted decide to holster up their guns and become the hunters.

Antihero’s Journey

From 2010-2013, a sword-andsandals epic that went by the name of Spartacus made its mark on this modern golden age of TV, taking advantage of the “anything goes” premium-cable sensibility to produce a series that pushed the boundaries of violence and sexuality.

There were some who dismissed the show for its extremes, but beneath all the lopped-off heads and writhing bodies was an artfully written tale of power, subjugation and selfdetermination — as rebellious gladiator Spartacus and his band of slaves rose up against the greatest empire the world has ever known.

A key player in that saga was Ashur, the ever-scheming Syrian who overcame his low station via low cunning. Ashur’s plans to climb the ladder of high society came to a brutal end when he was abandoned by his Roman benefactors and beheaded by the gladiators he once called brothers. But now, over a decade later, the loveto-hate-him antihero gets another shot at glory in this spinoff.

SPARTACUS: HOUSE OF ASHUR

Friday, 8 p.m. & 9 p.m., Starz 1; 11:35 p.m. & 12:35 a.m., Starz 2

After a brief jaunt to the underworld, Ashur (played, once again, by the indelible Nick E. Tarabay) is reincarnated by the powers-that-be in an alternate reality where he was the one who saved Roman general Marcus Crassus from Spartacus’ blade, and was rewarded with all he’d been promised: ownership of the ludus that once held him prisoner, and a stable of enslaved warriors to call his own.

Yet, as all involved will soon learn, getting everything you’ve ever dreamt of can be a curse. Because while he’s now got more power than he ever imagined, Ashur is but a small snake in the very large vipers’ nest that is the Republic — a place where silver tongues can strike just as deadly a blow as a steel axe, and the true brutality happens outside the Colosseum.

Not Acting Like Myself

After a well-received run on the festival circuit, this offbeat Hollywood satire comes to the masses via Netflix.

The latest from indie auteur Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) is a character study of a movie star — and to conduct that study, he hired an actor of unparalleled real-life movie stardom: George Clooney. Here, Oscar winner plays Jay Kelly, an aging showbiz icon forced to reconcile his identity and his onscreen persona whilst on a trip to accept a lifetime achievement award at a gala in Italy. But just what has Jay “achieved” in his lifetime? How does the titan on the silver screen compare to the man staring back at him from the mirror? Joining Jay on this sojourn is longtime manager Ron (Adam Sandler), who himself is compelled to question his choices as he reflects on a life lived behind the scenes.

“Movie stars are our avatars. They are people that we invest in and project onto and live through,” Baumbach told Vanity Fair. “And a movie star needed to play the movie star. That was in the

DNA of what this thing should be: What if a movie star was essentially playing one, and reflecting back our own vulnerabilities and our own questions about life?”

Indeed, it was a premise that hit home for Clooney — and one which he dove into, sans insecurity. “When you’re an actor in my position, at my age, finding roles like this aren’t all that common,” he mused in his own chat with Vanity Fair. “If you can’t make peace with aging, then you’ve got to get out of the business and just disappear. I’m now the guy that, when I go running after a bad guy, it’s funny — it’s not suspenseful. That’s OK. I embrace all of that.”

QDoes sitting down and watching the show inevitably offer you a fresh perspective on yourself?

A Oh, absolutely. Physically, even. Like, you see a lot of reality TV people have a glow-up, right? Physical glow-ups. Emotional glow-ups. Intellectual glow-ups.

And there are some moments that I’ve watched myself and I’ve been like, “I’m not ever gonna do that again!” But then I’m me, so I end up doing it again [laughs]. But no, I think it’s a fascinating way to learn about yourself. You really do hone in on your strengths and your weaknesses. They’re highlighted. There are moments where I watch myself and I’m like, “That is so cringey. Make it go away!” And then there are moments where I’m like, “Oh, I’m proud of myself for that.”

QCan you tell us about some of your more memorable fan encounters across six seasons of the show?

A There’ve been so many. The fans are amazing. I was in Australia last summer and I had a woman come

I never thought I’d see you in in my town!” And she just shared with me her experience of her childhood with religion and her parents and abuse, and a lot of the same traumas that I’ve shared briefly on television. To hear that it impacted her life and she went out and followed some of my recommendations on getting help and how I’ve healed myself — to know that someone actually took my advice and is in a much better place — that was very touching . . . And then, a little more of a vanity one is when Rihanna commented on one of my posts and DM’d me!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?: HOLIDAY EDITION

Tuesday, 10:02 p.m., ABC

Beyond the eggnog and the gifts, the holidays are a time for reflection — to look back on the year that was and gauge whether or not we lived up to the standards set for ourselves when the calendar turned over. That in mind, what better moment for the return of this ABC social experiment? While a full 19th season of the hidden-camera series has yet to be confirmed, the show will debut a special yuletide instalment on Tuesday evening.

The network’s press release teases: “Santa isn’t the only one watching this season! . . . John Quiñones and Sara Haines see who’s naughty, who’s nice — and who’s caught in between.

The hidden cameras are rolling, and the scenarios include a woman shamed for being single during the holidays, a child facing recital stage fright, an unhoused veteran falling victim to thieves and a little person being asked intrusive questions.”

As ever, the results are thought-provoking, cringeinducing and eminently relatable.

Once again, 20/20’s John Quiñones and The View’s Sara Haines stand as arbiters over footage of average folks unwittingly immersed in staged events that present them with a moral or ethical quandary. And this time, the conundrums in question have a festive spin.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH EMBARKS ON A MEDICAL MISSION DURING A HEARTWARMING JOURNEY WITH HIS FATHER

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: A ROAD TRIP TO REMEMBER

Disney+

est known as Thor in Marvel’s cinematic universe, Chris Hemsworth has been battling a challenge offscreen that is much more frightening than any villain. On the first season of his National Geographic series Limitless, Hemsworth discovered through genetic testing that he carries two copies of a gene that makes him more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those not carrying the gene. At that point, the illness loomed far in the future, and the series became inspiration for taking better care of himself.

In Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember, the disease hits closer to home. A new documentary follows Hemsworth and his father Craig as they return to the stomping grounds of the actor’s youth, amid the family patriarch’s diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer’s. “I wanna do everything I can to help him,” says Hemsworth in the trailer. “Turns out, this experience could help fight the disease.”

Part personal narrative, part service piece, the hour-long doc came out of Hemsworth and production company Nutopia’s collaboration on Limitless, with filming taking place parallel to the original series. “The main series very much leaned into Chris, the superhero,” says Nutopia executive producer Arif Nurmohamed. “This film was another side of Chris, which is that vulnerable, open, honest, very likable, ordinary guy, in a strange sort of way. So, it felt important that we define this as its own thing.”

The unforgettable road trip consists of two excursions down memory lane: first a visit to Hemsworth’s childhood home, where the purpose is to visibly demonstrate the science of reminiscence therapy. “We revisit the past and practice using our brain to access memories through old objects, pictures, people,” says Dr. Suraj Samtani, a dementia specialist and clinical psychologist at the University of New South Wales Centre for Healthy Brain Aging. “It was like a time warp moment — Chris and Craig felt like they were back in time. And this was really important for Craig, because he became more confident. He started

joking and laughing and talking way more animatedly than he had been up to that point. Everyone was surprised just how effective this was for him and his memory.”

The pair then head off on motorcycles to Bulman in the Northern Territory of Australia, where the Hemsworth children spent their formative years. This part of the father-and-son road trip also served as reminiscence therapy, with the added benefit of social connection. “You see them talking to the community in Bulman and really light up because they feel that connection,” says Dr. Samtani. “The science of social connection reduces our stress and inflammation in the brain and keeps our brain healthy. But also, people who have frequent

social interaction, which we know from our research, have half the risk of dementia and it even slows down the rate of cognitive decline.”

With 57 million people, globally, suffering from dementia, these circumstances that Hemsworth and National Geographic were able to facilitate for Craig can also be created on a smaller scale, says Dr. Samtani. “It’s actually a very easy thing to do,” he says. “You can simply talk to [someone with dementia] about key moments in their life, like their graduation, meeting their partner or having kids. Talk to them about challenges that they overcame and how that made them stronger. We know these types of conversations build self-esteem and confidence for someone living

with dementia. You can also do something even simpler, which is to put on old songs or look at old photo albums. Every time you do that, they’re actually practicing accessing that memory, which strengthens that memory.”

With the disease still in its early stages, Hemsworth and his father are able to discuss the inevitable in both a frank and vulnerable manner. There are also moments in the film where the viewer gets to see Craig lose his cognitive footing. “We weren’t sure that they would let us put those moments in the film — they are incredibly intimate moments — and yet everybody wanted to,” says Nutopia executive producer Jane Root. In the end, the Hemsworths viewed it as public service. “Craig worked as a child protection officer for most of his working life. He’s a really compassionate, caring man. So, I think he understood the good that could come from sharing his story,” says Nurmohamed. “Of course, they had an absolute right to say, ‘We don’t feel comfortable with this,’ and they didn’t.”

With a Marvel superhero at the helm, Dr. Samtani expects the documentary to raise significant awareness for Alzheimer’s. With millions of new cases of dementia being diagnosed every year, the

There’s a lot that we can do to change the course of the future . . . it’s important for people to know that about half of our risk is genetic, but that doesn’t mean our story has been written.”

researcher hopes that viewers soak up both optimism and good brain health habits from the film. “There’s a lot that we can do to change the course of the future. Half of our risk is potentially modifiable, and the way we can do that is through eating well, exercising, being socially active and always be learning something new. Learn a language, dance, read the news. Challenge the brain,” he says. “Yes, it’s important for people to know that about half of our risk is genetic, but that doesn’t mean our story has been written.” ■

The bizarre true story of the assassination of plays out in Death By Lightning

DEATH BY LIGHTNING

Netflx

The story of James Garfield, the 20th president of the U.S.A, is often overlooked in the annals of history. Yet it’s a fascinating tale that resonates in today’s deeply divided America.

Garfield — a preacher, lawyer and Civil War general — served in the House of Representatives for nine terms when he was selected to become the GOP candidate at the 1880 Republican National Convention — something he hadn’t been campaigning for, or even wanted. Despite his reluctance, he

ran a low-key campaign and was elected president.

His tenure in the White House began in March of 1881, but was cut short just a few months later when, that July, he was shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a deluded and disturbed man who believed killing Garfield would solve all his problems. Garfield survived the assassination attempt — only to die nearly three months later due to infection brought about by his doctors’ unsanitary treatment of his wound.

This true story forms the basis of Death By Lightning, a new Netflix limited series from Mike Makowsky, based on the Candice Millard’s 2011 book Destiny of the Republic When he read the book, Makowsky

Michael Shannon portrays James Garfield, who served as 20th president of the U.S. until his untimely death.

America’s 20th president, James Garfield,

immediately knew it was a story he wanted to tell. “So much about the story felt so contemporary and vital to me,” he told Netflix’s Tudum. “It was moving and tragic and poignant, but also kind of absurdly funny at times that I wasn’t really expecting.”

Matthew Macfadyen, who plays Guiteau, concurs. “I mean, it’s a very timely story, and it’s a timeless story. It’s about political violence and ambition and obsession, and all those things.” For the Succession alum, signing onto the series was “a real no-brainer” when he saw what Makowsky had written. “I got the script and I loved it, and I leapt at the chance, really,” he says. “I thought it was a just fascinating story about which I knew nothing. And as an actor, you’re sort of looking for something a little different, and this was.”

Playing Garfield is Michael Shannon, who likewise jumped at the opportunity — albeit, he jokes, for a different reason. “I just couldn’t believe someone wanted me to play a president,” he says with a laugh. “I didn’t see that coming.”

As Shannon points out, the memory of Garfield has faded into the fabric of time, and he remains a little-known figure in America’s history during a little-remembered period between the Civil War and the First World War. “When I told people I was playing Garfield, they

were like, ‘Why are you playing the cat? Haven’t they already done that?’” Shannon recalls. “And I was like, ‘No, I’m not playing Garfield the cat. I’m playing Garfield the president. They’re like, ‘Who?’”

Getting serious, Shannon recalls that researching Garfield was an eye-opening experience that gave him a keen appreciation of Garfield’s efforts to weed out government corruption and promote civil rights during his brief time as president. “I think President Garfield is one of my favourite people, really, based on all the research I did about him,” says Shannon. “The thing is, not many people know much about him. But

if you want to know something about him, there are plenty of ways to learn, ’cause there’s amazing literature you can read. And considering how short his term was thanks to [Guiteau], he has quite a legacy. Quite a moving legacy that you can still see to this day . . . His nickname was ‘the greatest president America never had.’”

Born into poverty, Garfield’s humble origins gave him a level of empathy that compelled him to use his position to help Americans, a background that made him uniquely qualified for the job. “He wasn’t born into it,” says Shannon. “I mean, he had to work his way up from nothing, you know. He wasn’t in some secret society, Skull and Bones or whatever. He saw America for what it was

PRESIDENT

Mathew Macfadyen plays Charles Guiteau, the disturbed individual responsible for President Garfield’s death.

from every vantage point. And his dignity was his ability to see other people’s point of view.”

While Garfield was guided by empathy, Guiteau was driven by delusion, brought about by what Macfadyen assumes was mental illness that doctors wouldn’t have been able to diagnose at the time. “He wasn’t psychologically very well,” says Macfadyen. “He would probably be diagnosed now with, I’m not sure what, but some sort of psychological condition. But he’s very human. I didn’t see him as a bad person. Just misguided and screwed up and kind of lonely. Lonely and confused . . . He certainly didn’t think he was doing bad things.”

In fact, Shannon jokingly contends that it wasn’t Guiteau who was responsible for Garfield’s death, but the ignorance of the medical establishment at that time. “He shouldn’t get all the blame. They say time and time again, if he would have shot Garfield nowadays, Garfield would’ve walked out of the

hospital the next day,” Shannon observes. Taking a deep dive into Guiteau, Macfadyen compares his character’s delusions of grandeur to the relentless quest for fame that exists in today’s social media. “It made me think an awful lot about how people latch onto celebrity as well today. And also, you know, that sort of feeds into your own validation for likes and, you know, all that stuff. I mean, it’s not a million miles away.

“It’s a very timely story, and it’s a timeless story. It’s about political violence and ambition and obsession, and all those things.”

I know the media landscape’s totally different, but he wanted a sort of notoriety. He wanted fame as well, you know. As he sort of progressed in his narcissism and delusion and all the rest of it. When he was in jail, he really thought he was a superstar. He thought he was a rock star.”

Shannon and Macfadyen are bolstered by an extraordinary supporting cast, including Betty Gilpin as First Lady Lucretia Garfield, Nick Offerman as Vice President Chester Alan Arthur, Bradley Whitford as Secretary of State James Blaine and Shea Whigham as Senator Roscoe Conkling.

As Shannon explains, that cast presented an opportunity to work with some old friends. “I had the benefit of knowing Shea and Nick for a real long time. I mean, I’ve known Nick Offerman literally since I was a teenager, ’cause we both came up doing theatre in Chicago together,” Shannon says. “That’s how we started out acting. We’re both in a Foreigner music video . . . And then Shea, I’ve known Shea since we met doing Tigerland together, which was Colin Farrell’s first big movie here in America. So, it was like ‘old buddies club.’”

According to Shannon, viewers who watch will be struck by just how eerily relevant the events in Death By Lightning are to America’s current political landscape. “I think, frankly, what the show is about and what it’s saying and its relevance to today’s events, is kinda hard to miss,” Shannon adds. “I almost feel kind of silly spelling it out, but I think if you watch the show, it will become abundantly obvious to you the reverberations between then and now. It’s almost frightening, really, how much overlap there is considering, you know, over a hundred years has gone by.” ■

NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN

Sheriff Country’s Christopher Gorham shares an inside look at the first season

SHERIFF COUNTRY

Friday, 8 p.m., Global & CBS

When Fire Country premiered in 2022, the fire fighter procedural set in smalltown California quickly gathered devoted fans. Covert Affairs star Christopher Gorham may not have been one of them at the time, but when he was approached with its spinoff, Sheriff Country, he delved deep into series creator Max Theriot’s intense world of California’s densest wildfire zones. “I became a fan,” he says. “They write characters and relationships that are believable. As an audience member, you can relate to the things that they’re going through.”

Right: Nathan Boone (Matt Lauria) and Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin).
Below: Christopher Gorham as Travis Fraley.

In Sheriff Country, which was introduced to viewers through a backdoor pilot in the second season of Fire Country, Homeland’s Morena Baccarin portrays Edgewater County’s new sheriff, Mickey Fox, whose professional life quickly gets muddied by her daughter Skye (Amanda Arcuri) being accused of murdering her boyfriend. Trying to help Skye in both a lawyer and father capacity is Mickey’s ex-husband Travis Fraley, played by Gorham. “What happens in those first few episodes, it changes these people, and they behave differently moving forward,” he says. “As an audience member, I think folks will find it a very satisfying story to watch, because I think the effects of what happens in those first few episodes carry through.”

While the drama of a murder charge certainly adds propulsion to any story, it was the relationships between characters that drew Gorham to the project. His character is an Edgewater County boy, born and bred. “Unlike most people in that town, he grew up quite wealthy. Most of the town doesn’t really like the Fraleys, but Travis has been

able to escape that because I think he’s genuinely a nice guy,” says Gorham. We quickly find out that amicable-enough exes Travis and Mickey fell in love in high school, had a child and were married for 20 years. But by the time we meet them, the couple has been divorced for about five years, and the reason for their breakup is still a mystery to be solved. “That relationship, for me, is key, because Mickey and Travis have known each other so long and they’ve loved each other for so long. No matter what their relationship status is, those two people are always going to love and care for one another,” says Gorham. “And sometimes that gets complicated.” Like, for example, when Travis starts a relationship with one of Mickey’s colleagues. “You find out

in the first episode that Travis has started dating one of Mickey’s deputies, Cassidy (Michele Weaver), and they haven’t told Mickey yet. They’ve been meaning to, but they just haven’t found the right time,” Gorham says with a chuckle. “Then — naturally, because it makes for great TV — Mickey finds out at the absolute worst time, so they have to come clean and that causes problems.” Complicated as it may be, Gorham holds out hope for this still budding romance. “We’re about halfway done filming the season right now, and there are just so many great relationship moments,” he says. “The journey that Travis and

that’s how that fight goes.’ I think couples — married and divorced — will really relate to the conversations they have.” Their first joint storyline also taps into the challenges of co-parenting, in this case under extreme duress. “It’s hard being a parent,” says Gorham. “As a dad, Travis feels like he messed up. Somewhere along the line, he did something wrong. He was the one who left the marriage. He’s not a deadbeat dad by any stretch of the imagination, but he did leave the relationship, and I think he feels a lot of guilt about that.”

Then, of course, there is weekly crime to solve. “Somebody doesn’t die every week, but people do get killed,” says Gorham. “Using the example of Humboldt County, California, this is a place that started off with a bunch of Vietnam vets starting a nudist colony and growing weed just as a hobby and turned into this region where there’s real danger involved, there’s real weaponry, and people do disappear. It can get real scary. It makes for good drama.”

Cassidy are on, is so good. You just root for both of them.”

Equally enjoyable for the actor, whose work often leans into comedy, are the verbal disputes between Travis and Mickey.

“Honestly, Morena and I have just some really good fights, and I really look forward to them because they’re so well written,” he says. “I’ve been married for over 25 years, and I get these scripts, I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah,

Mix in that familiar smalltown vibe and now things start to feel really personal. “Everybody knows each other and that requires a different kind of policing. You won’t treat them the same way if they’re your neighbour, your cousin, or the guy you used to date in high school,” he says. “I think it’s a kind of law enforcement that people are yearning for right now, where it’s not just faceless people punishing other people, it’s people trying to make things better. The goal is to make the community safer. I love how we go about doing that week after week.”

PALM ROYALE

Wednesday, Apple TV

t’s time to pull up a chair and pour yourself a grasshopper — Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons (Kristen Wiig) is back at the Palm Royale and you’re going to need a cocktail to keep up with her new adventures. Wiig and the over-the-top amazing cast — including Ricky Martin, Allison

Janney, Leslie Bibb and TV legend Carol Burnett — return for more of the frothy 1960s comedy and, as expected, silliness in candy-coloured surroundings ensues.

Yes, Palm Royale has a plot, and it’s a doozy. In season one, Maxine arrives in Palm Beach circa 1969, hoping to gain access to its upper echelon by becoming the caretaker for her husband’s wealthy aunt, Norma Dellacorte (Burnett), a grand dame who spent nearly the entire first season in a coma. From the start, Maxine cleverly creates

scenarios allowing her to befriend members of the exclusive Palm Royale country club (including Janney’s Evelyn Rollins and Bibb’s Dinah Donahue), so she can use their secrets to leverage her position. The final step to Maxine’s societal ascent is hosting the extravagant Beach Ball, but as the prestigious event nears, chaos threatens to derail her at every turn. To make a long story short, we enter the second season knowing that Norma — now wide awake from her coma — is really Agnes, a former

boarding school roommate of Norma’s who assumed her identity. We also found out that Maxine’s manicurist and protégé Mitzi (Kaia Gerber) is pregnant courtesy of Maxine’s husband Douglas (Josh Lucas) — and Norma/Agnes can’t wait to use the unborn baby to tear Douglas and Maxine apart.

As for Maxine’s fête of the season — well, if it wasn’t already going steadily downhill when Maxine revealed everyone’s darkest secrets

from the Beach Ball stage, it definitely hit the skids when socialite-turned-radical feminist Mary (Newhart alum Julia Duffy) tried to assassinate guest of honour President Richard Nixon. Mary was foiled by Evelyn’s secret stepdaughter-slash-women’s rights activist-slash-Douglas’ ex-fiancé Linda (Laura Dern); Instead of Nixon, the bullet hit Norma’s caretaker Robert (Martin), and it was Linda who was arrested while

Mary escaped. Overwhelmed? Confused about how anyone can co-exist from here on? Don’t worry, in the season two premiere everything will come back into focus — but not without a little razzle dazzle to start the show.

Abe Sylvia’s absurdist dramedy is not just a fast-moving vehicle but a continual visual feast that mesmerizes those involved. “It is our own personal Willy Wonka, no doubt about it,” says former Facts of Life star Mindy Cohn, who plays society reporter Anne Holiday. “It’s just deliciousness waiting to happen.”

According to Wiig, who also serves as executive producer, production designer Jon Carlos works in tandem with costume designer Alix Friedberg to make sure every detail counts. “The work they do is incredible,” says Wiig. “We did a scene where Jon Carlos pointed out that the colours we were wearing, they had put into the tile in the floor. And there was a scene in a bank last year where there they curated the colour of the fish to match [the characters]. It’s so fun.”

With song-and-dance numbers, quippy one-liners and endless gags, the cast credits series creator and frequent director Sylvia for being their guide through the madness. “I’ve never been on a show like this. It’s such a joy to be able to be on something where you don’t have to worry about, ‘Am I doing too much?’ No, you’re actually not doing enough,” says Amber Chardae Robinson, who plays feminist bookstore owner with a secret, Virginia. “And Abe’s very reassuring when you feel like you’re not [getting it right]. I might be freaking out, but he’s never worried.” Wiig adds that within the creative freedom

way to ground yourself. And Abe is just the beacon of light that you go to before every scene.”

Yet all the frivolity would be for nothing if there wasn’t a deeper meaning to the antics of Maxine

and her frenemies. For Sylvia, Palm Royale is a farcical take on survival in a society that finds “solutions” for women they deem problematic. “We start off in a place where these women are quite literally trapped, and it’s all about how these marginalized people have to colour outside the lines when the world is trying to keep them captive,” says Sylvia. “The biggest theme of the show, and how we survive in life, is we have to shapeshift. It is all about how, if you live long enough as a woman, you’ll be many people and all of them will be you.”

It’s those undertones that keep both cast and viewers leaning in. “There’s gravitas in all of these one-liners,” says Cohn.

“I think people connect to these characters, as broad as they are, because they are firmly grounded in reality and the reality of the day, politically and socially.” Even the theme of belonging is as topical today as it was in the late 1960s. “Everyone wears a mask, in a sense, but what makes the show so rich is that the audience can see what’s underneath it,” says Robinson. “You can see what Maxine is dealing with. You can see what Douglas is dealing with. It’s not just this big circus. You’re looking at people who have layers and I think that’s what makes the show so rich.” ■

Last Word... The

Sarah Drew & Peter Mooney

MISTLETOE MURDERS

STACK TV & On Demand

QSeason one ended on a sizable cliffhanger, as Sam pressed Emily about her dark past, and she closed down. Where do we find them this year?

ASARAH: I think what’s kind of fun about this season is that they never quite shake the reality that there is this deep attraction that they feel toward one another — but they have this giant, impenetrable wall that’s keeping them from being able to move forward or act on it, because Sam will never stop wanting to know Emily’s secrets and Emily will never be comfortable sharing those secrets . . .

QSpeaking of those secrets and the discord they create, how do Emily and Sam go about bridging that gap . . . given that they still have to work together?

A

PETER: There is, like Sarah spoke about, this really strong attraction that is happening on two different levels.

There’s the regular physical attraction, but there’s also the attraction of minds . . . the fact that this is what Sam does for a living, this is his calling, and he’s encountered someone who — even though she is not a detective, and really should not be on that side of the yellow tape — has such a knack for it and such a brain for it, I think they recognize that in each other and there’s an attraction there.

But, to try and hold that with this big, unanswerable, shrouded thing that he is not allowed to know really creates this obstacle in terms of trusting each other. So, they’re pulled apart with equal tension to how they’re pulled together — which is what makes it so much fun to exist in and play.

SARAH: And also, the reality is that both of them are like a dog with a bone when it comes to a mystery. They have to figure it out [laughs]. And now the biggest mystery for Sam is, “Who is Emily?” So, we’ll see him really wrestle with how far he can go to try to solve this mystery if she won’t be the one to let him into it. That creates a whole other level of secrecy happening between the two of them as they’re both ultimately striving

MEMORABLE ROLES:

A native of Stony Brook, New York, Sarah Drew is best known to TV fans for playing Dr. April Kepner on Grey’s Anatomy from 2009-2018. She’s also popped up in Everwood, Cruel Summer and Mad Men. Winnipeg’s own Peter Mooney, meanwhile, spent four seasons on CBC legal drama Burden of Truth opposite Kristin Kreuk as crusading attorney Billy Crawford. You’ve also seen him as a regular on Saving Hope and Rookie Blue

CURRENT GIG:

Airing on W Network in Canada, this Hallmark series casts Drew as Emily Lane, owner of a small-town Christmas shop who must reluctantly put her secret, shadowy past to work unravelling the murders of friends and neighbours. Mooney plays local cop Sam Wilner, who’s drawn to Emily both professionally and romantically; alas, her many secrets conspire to keep them from a happily ever after.

for the same goals, but finding themselves at odds with one another.

QChristmas and murder don’t make for the likeliest of genre mash-ups at first blush. That said, there is an inherent darkness to the holidays for so many people. Would you say Mistletoe Murders is engaging with that, to some degree?

ASARAH: What makes people really gravitate toward the Christmas genre is the reality that there is brokenness, and why people love the Christmas genre so much is that you start in a place of conflict, you take a journey and then at the end there’s resolution . . . The murder mystery genre takes a similar kind of journey. You have a murder that happens, you take a journey and it’s solved by the end. Justice is dealt out. So, there’s this resolution in both of these genres that actually kind of play in parallel to one another and intertwine with one another, which is why I think the melding of both of these genres works so well.

PETER: I agree. And there’s something so wonderful about . . . Emily has built this life, she’s set up this Christmas store, she’s bubble-wrapped herself in the sort of warm and fuzzy and beautiful and wonderful things about Christmas. But the reality is, other things keep breaking in. It keeps getting more complex, and it’s a fight to be able to return to that place where things are good and simple and happy. I think that’s true to life too. You can have the best designs — but sometimes it takes a bit of a circuitous path to get there.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
