Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.
Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.
A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

Gerry Dee is certainly no stranger to Canadian television viewers. His CBC sitcom, Mr. D, ran for an impressive eight seasons until ending in 2019, and he can currently be seen in his sixth season as host of Family Feud Canada
Truly, Dee is one funny guy, and that’s something that comedy aficionados outside our home and native land will be discovering this week with the debut of his first-ever standup comedy special for Netflix, Gerry Dee: Funny You Should Say That
Dee spent nine years as a teacher in a private school prior to launching his comedy career, an experience that not only formed the basis of his autobiographical sitcom, but is also at the heart of his standup. After exiting the classroom, Dee distinguished himself by winning the prestigious San Francisco International Comedy Competition and making it to the finals in NBC’s Last Comic Standing
“With dry wit, Canadian comic Gerry Dee explores his perilous years as a schoolteacher, the pitfalls of open marriages and the truth about Santa,” reads the logline for the special. Filmed in Montreal during this summer’s Just for Laughs festival, the hour-long special
GERRY DEE: FUNNY YOU SHOULD SAY THAT
“mines the shared experience of middleage, parenting pitfalls, and navigating the complexities of modern life.”
As Dee pointed out in a statement, bringing his act to a streaming service that boasts more than 300 million subscribers worldwide will expose him to his largest audience to date. “To finally have my first Netflix special is truly a highlight of my career,” he said. “After 25 years of standup and years on television, there is no bigger platform to share my comedy. The energy of performing in Montreal for Just for Laughs was incredible, and I can’t wait for people around the world to see the special.”

SEASON FINALE
Friday, 9 p.m. & Midnight, HBO Canada
Caustic comedian Bill Maher wraps up the 23rd season of his politically charged HBO talk show, and he’ll be back: Real Time received a two-season pickup back in 2024. “Two more years in the dream job of a lifetime . . . I think that’s what we call a no-brainer,” said Maher at the time.
I really enjoyed the new King of the Hill, it was very well done. Will there be more episodes coming?

You weren’t alone. The long-awaited 14th season of King of the Hill proved to be an exceptionally strong performer for Disney+, with curious fans of the original tuning in to see how creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels would update the beloved animated comedy. With viewership exceeding a billion hours, two more seasons were ordered — and that’s in additon to the original two-season, 20-episode order. The 10-episode 15th season is slated to debut sometime in 2026, with seasons 16 and 17 to follow.

Jensen Ackles has been great whenever he’s guest-starred on Tracker. Will he be back at all?
W.S., Burnaby
To date, the former Supernatural star has been in four episodes of the action-packed CBS drama as Russell Shaw, estranged (and somewhat shady) brother of titular tracker Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley).
As for whether viewers will see more of Ackles in the
role, if it were up to Tracker showrunner Elwood Reid, the answer would be a resounding yes. As Reid told TV Insider, he’d love to lock Ackles down to star in a Tracker spinoff.
“That’s always my dream,” Reid said. “Look, Jensen is very well-employed by Amazon right now. He’s on The Boys spinoff [Vought Rising]. But you never know. A boy can dream. I can hope for it.”
Even if that doesn’t happen, Reid is hopeful that Ackles will be able to free up some time in his busy schedule to make a guest-starring return to the show at some point. “Who

knows what the future holds,” Reid added. “I love writing for Jensen, and I think he and Justin are so good together. There’s just a chemistry that those two have. It would be fun to continue to play with Jensen in our world or in a possible world of his own . . . That’s me shamelessly planting little things for the studio [or] network to pick up on.”
While Ackles’ latest series — Prime Video’s Countdown — was cancelled after its first season, he will, as Reid pointed out, be busy reprising his role as superhero Soldier Boy on the final season of The Boys (coming in 2026) and its spinoff Vought Rising (late 2026 or early 2027).
The finale of Only Murders in the Building seemed to suggest the next season will be taking place in London. Is that true?
T.F., Parksville
The quirky crime comedy’s finale saw Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver (Martin Short) solve one murder, only to be presented with another — that of fellow true crime podcaster Cinda Canning (Tina Fey). This mystery will, indeed, bring our three gumshoes to London.
“The character of Cinda started everything, so we’re going back to the beginning. The nature of what she’s doing, what she is doing over in England, doing this thing now . . . why? I got to know more about it,” series co-creator John Hoffman mused to Deadline. “It’s an opportunity to tease something that opens up a whole new mystery in the home of the cozy murder mystery, which felt very exciting.”
As for the new setting, Hoffman sees London as being rife with comedic possibilities. “London is New York’s sister city. There will be all sorts of connectors,” he added. “We will take our storytelling and steep it into this new culture and our trio will be fish in new waters.”

Growing up in the ’60s, I remember Goldie Hawn as a complete ditz on Laugh-In, and I am curious how she went from there to an Oscar winner and a serious actress opposite Edward Albert in one of my favourite movies, Butterflies Are Free. M.V., Victoria
Butterflies Are Free is a 1972 romantic comedy inspired by the 1969 Broadway play of the same name. Based in large part on actual people and events, it tells the story of Don Baker (Albert), blind since birth and trying to escape the influence of his domineering mother (Eileen Heckart). He rents an apartment on his own, and mom agrees to stay away for two months, giving the lad time to assert his independence — although she doesn’t believe he’ll actually make it that long. Everything changes, however, when free-spirited Jill (Hawn) moves in next door, putting a new spin on Don’s life.
While Butterflies Are Free was Hawn’s first major dramatic role, she was already becoming a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, having won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in the 1969 comedy Cactus Flower, filmed before her exit from Laugh-In circa 1970.
Hawn went on to become one of the biggest movie stars of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, appearing in such hit films as Shampoo, Foul Play, Wildcats, Overboard, Death Becomes Her and The First Wives Club. Hawn received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for the 1980 dramedy Private Benjamin (which she also produced), but the statue wound up going to Sissy Spacek for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner’s Daughter

SEASON PREMIERE

Sunday, Paramount+
Another of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s gritty, soapy dramas is back in the saddle. After a season-one finale that saw the death of West Texas crude baron Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), season two opens to find M-Tex Oil in the hands of the late billionaire’s chosen successor, the company’s longtime fixer Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton), as well as Monty’s widow, Cami (Demi Moore).
Alas, straight-talkin’ Tommy is nowhere near as suited for the boardroom as he is for the oil field.
“Tommy’s kind of a reluctant executive and still acting in
his old role too, because he’s the kind of guy who can’t really give up what he knows and where he feels the most comfortable,” Thornton told Entertainment Weekly. “But since Cami has been left with this company she’s never run before, he’s got to be there to show her the works.” Complicating matters even further are ruthless drug lord Galino (Andy Garcia), who’s set to play a larger role in season two after arriving with a literal bang at the end of season one. Plus, one of Sheridan’s previous leading men, 1883 alum Sam Elliott (pictured above) joins the cast as Tommy’s estranged dad.
Anew historical thriller out of Japan takes us back to 1878, as the once-proud samurai see their way of life erased by a modernizing world that no longer values their ancient order and, indeed, will no longer even allow them to carry a blade. As poverty and plague run rampant, 292 of these warriors get the chance to win 100 billion yen, if they can manage to be the sole survivor of a winner-take-all battle
royale. The series stars Junichi Okada, who pulls triple-duty as producer and lead fight choreographer. Previewing Last Samurai Standing in a chat with Tudum, he said: “My hidden goal was to create a new kind of period drama, one that’s also an action drama . . . something made entirely in Japan, but made for the world. It’s grounded in serious themes, but the characters are sharply drawn, and the story is truly entertaining.”
The first of several Harlequin novels The CW will soon adapt into TV movies, Montana Mavericks casts Walker: Independence alum Katherine McNamara as a big-city author who inherits a ranch that comes complete with a sexy cowboy next door.

A prequel to 18th-century novelist Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ oftadapted Dangerous Liaisons, this tale of sex, betrayal and high society focuses on a young Isabelle de Merteuil (Anamaria Vartolomei) as she sets out to become Paris’ top courtesan — paying a high price for her “emotional and sexual freedom.”

Small-town Christmas shop owner Emily Lane (Sarah Drew) and policeman Sam Wilner (Peter Mooney) inch ever closer to unmasking the culprits behind the chess coach killing that kicked off season two. But the real concern on the minds of fans: what’s the next move for this duo’s unrequited love?

Best known to many viewers for his roles on raunchy FX comedy The League and star-studded Apple TV soap The Morning Show, Mark Duplass got his start as — and continues to be — a creative force in the world of American independent film as a prolific writer, producer and star. One project in which he served as all three was 2014 foundfootage horror flick Creep, about a serial killer who posts an ad online seeking a videographer to document his quirky, grisly exploits — only for the cameraman to become his latest victim.
It spawned a sequel in 2017, followed by an anthology-style TV series in 2024 helmed by Duplass and franchise director Patrick Brice — each episode taking the form of a standalone encounter pulled from the video library of the “Creep” himself.
A second season of darkly comedic carnage premiered on Friday, November 14, and continues this week, depicting the twisted game of cat-and-mouse our antihero plays to
Friday, Shudder
attract and psychologically unravel his unwitting victims.
No doubt, television is a format that’s given the avant-garde Duplass and Brice the chance to push their storytelling boundaries even futher, playing with the audience’s expectations, and even channelling other horror franchises like Saw.
“The mission statement was expand,” Duplass told The Direct at Fantastic Fest 2025. “If season one was about, ‘Are audiences going to like this? Are they going to accept this? Do they want this form? We’re not sure.’ Now we kind of know that they’re here for us, or at least some people are. And so now we could swing the bat a little heavier . . . You’re gonna see different camera formats, different kinds of guest stars coming on, and a little bit more experimentation with the form of the story and how you can break that up a little bit.”

Like many Hollywood A-listers over the past few years, Mark Wahlberg has been splitting his time between the silver screen and the small — with multiple pricey blockbusters debuting on streamers like Prime Video and Apple TV.
This week sees him return to the latter with a sequel to 2023 action comedy The Family Plan. If you need a refresher, the first film cast the Oscar nominee as Dan Morgan, a seemingly average suburban dad who, before he was dealing cars for a living, dealt death as a highly trained secret agent. When Dan’s past came knockin’, he was forced to let his incredulous wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) and teen offspring Nina (Zoe Colletti) and Kyle (Van Morgan) in on the secret as they fought to evade a team of assassins amidst a road trip.
In this follow-up, another of Dan’s former enemies emerges, spoiling what was shaping up to be a nice little European getaway. (Luckily, Jess and the young’uns won’t be caught quite so off-guard this time around.)
Friday, Apple TV
As the synopsis teases: “It’s the holiday season and Dan has planned the perfect vacation for his wife Jessica and their kids to celebrate overseas — until a mysterious figure from his past shows up with unfinished business. An international game of cat-and-mouse ensues as Dan and his family battle, bicker and bond their way through a series of bank heists, holiday hijinks and car chases.” Playing that “mysterious figure” is Game of Thrones heartthrob Kit Harington. Meanwhile, returning behind the camera we have director Simon Cellan Jones, who told People: “We loved the tone and feel of the first movie and definitely didn’t want to fix what wasn’t broke. It’s still a super-normal, grounded family getting into dangerous scrapes with ruthless killers. But this time they go to Europe, and it’s great to see them out of their comfort zone.”

SEBASTIAN MANISCALCO: IT AIN’T RIGHT
Friday, Disney+
Among the most successful and acclaimed standup comics of the past decade, Sebastian Maniscalco takes a break from expanding into TV and film with a new special that finds the Illinois native going “all-in on family chaos, aging and the little things that drive us all nuts.”

If the comic stylings of Mr. Maniscalco didn’t scratch your standup itch for the week, might we recommend another veteran of the live-comedy arts?
You’ve seen Kathleen Madigan on Just for Laughs, as a judge on NBC reality battle Last Comic Standing and as a commentator on series like I Love the ’90s. Now, her first hour-long special since 2023’s Hunting
Bigfoot hits Prime Video. As the streamer itself explains:
“She’s the fun lady at the end of the bar with a lot of opinions and only half of the information. Kathleen Madigan’s new special explores gambling as math education, Midwest pioneers, her four cats and aging parents. Her sharp wit tackles modern church competition while showcasing her mastery of crafting perfect jokes.”
Wednesday, Netflix
She first turned heads on Friday Night Lights and will soon be back for a second season of Netflix’s western romance Ransom Canyon. But before that, Minka Kelly celebrates the holidays with this Christmas flick.
She plays Sydney Price, an American exec who travels abroad to close a deal for her company to acquire one of Paris’ most storied champagne houses. Before getting down to business, she decides to spend her first night in the City of Lights soaking up the ambience.
While out and about, Syd crosses paths with a devastatingly handsome local named Henri (Slow Horses alum Tom Wozniczka). They end
up spending the evening together on an impromptu date that’s truly the stuff of fairytales. Unfortunately, the cold light of morning leads to a rude awakening at her meeting to buy Château Cassell, when she arrives to find Henri on site. Turns out, he’s the son of the château’s owner (Call My Agents! ’s Thibault de Montalembert), and as Netflix’s synopsis teases: “Not only is this potential acquisition now clouded by charming Henri’s presence and her burgeoning feelings, but she must spend the next several days competing with other potential buyers. With both a lucrative business deal and a blossoming romance on the table, Sydney’s in for a jam-packed holiday season.”

Tuesday, 10 p.m., History
Yet another seasonal holiday battle comes fresh out of the TV oven — but this one’s more than just a taste test. Structural integrity also matters! Combining their skillsets to judge both categories are pastry chef Gale Gand and honestto-goodness architect Mike Ford in a gingerbread-house and -man competition that sees contestants “transform flour, sugar and candy into intricate works of art, competing in playful rounds that test design, structure and creativity. Each week, new challenges bring twists and surprises . . . inviting viewers into a magical holiday world, where imagination has no limits.”
Guest judges will include The Good Place actress D’Arcy Carden, chef Christine Tosi and Canadian stylist Brad Goreski. Serving as emcee through it all is Oliver Hudson, who’s also getting in the holiday spirit by starring opposite Alicia Silverstone in Netflix’s recently debuted rom-com A Merry Little Ex-Mas. Gingerbread Land proved to be a natural fit for the actor, given that the holidays mean a lot to him and his celebrity family — sister Kate Hudson, brother Wyatt Russell, mother Goldie Hawn and stepdad Kurt Russell. “Our family traditions are not separate,” he told People. “Kate doesn’t have her own Christmas. I don’t have my own Christmas. Wyatt doesn’t have his own Christmas. We’re all together.”

Iconic character actor Danny Trejo hosts a second season profiling astonishing, unexpected discoveries throughout history. This week is all about “blasts from the past,” including hidden Nazi bunkers, secret chemical weapons beneath Washington, D.C., and a genuine outer-space supernova.

Bringing a little Vanderpump Rules and Below Deck energy to Prime Video, this series follows Baumgartner amidst one bustling wedding cycle as he does his best to make matrimonial dreams a reality. Country music’s finest crooners gather at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to showcase and celebrate the genre’s top hit-makers from the year that was. Leading the nominees with six nods apiece are Ella Langley, Megan Moroney and Lainey Wilson. Regardless of who lands the hardware, Wilson will — quite literally — take centre stage tonight. After co-hosting last year’s gala alongside National Football League legend Peyton Manning and fellow country star Luke Bryan in a very well-received triple team-up, she’ll man the mic solo on Wednesday.
“I grew up watching the CMA Awards like it was the Super Bowl, so to be
hosting for a second year is a true honour,” Wilson beamed in a statement. “I’m humbled that CMA has trusted me with this role, and I can’t wait to love on this genre that has given me so much.”
Given that she’s a nine-time former CMA winner and owner of the Association’s vaunted Entertainer of the Year award from 2023, we’d imagine the “Watermelon Moonshine” singer will be just fine and dandy if she goes home without an armful of trophies.
Other nominees include Zach Top with five; Riley Green and Cody Johnson with four each; and Kristian Bush, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton and Morgan Wallen with three apiece.

The amazing story of Canadian rocker Bif Naked unfolds in what’s described as “the definitive documentary,” with director Pollyanna Hardwicke-Brown utilizing rare footage, intimate interviews and unforgettable performances to celebrate an iconoclastic performer who’s always insisted on playing by her own rules. Born in New Dehli and adopted by American missionaries before coming to Canada, the estwhile Beth Torbert’s rise in the rock world did not come without leaving scars. Her journey has included sexual assault as a teen, along with surviving breast cancer, heart surgery and
kidney failure — all while overcoming the challenges she faced as a pioneer in the male-dominated rock music industry.
“I am so overwhelmed by the reaction my documentary is receiving from audiences and reviewers,” she said in a statement. “Our director, Pollyanna HardwickeBrown is truly my guardian angel. Not only has she followed my career, but I feel she truly understands me and really captured my story. This film is about my journey and ultimately I want the audience to be able to transcend what they think they know about me and feel, so that by the end of the film, they will be inspired to overcome any obstacle, any hardship, and believe that they too will come out on the other side even stronger.”

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Ted Danson returns with a second season of A Man on the Inside, and this time he’s going undercover to solve a mystery at a college

ed Danson has been a staple on TV screens ever since viewers were first introduced to Cheers bartender Sam Malone back in 1982. Since then, Danson has played a cantankerous doctor in sitcom Becker, a crime scene investigator on CSI (and then on CSI: Cyber), an afterlife bureaucrat in The Good Place, and, of course, a skewed version of himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Last year, Danson reunited with The Good Place creator Mike Schur for Netflix comedy A Man on the Inside, which found him portraying Charles Nieuwendyk, a retired San Francisco professor who’s hired by private detective Julie Kovalenko (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) to go undercover at an assisted-living facility in order to crack a case involving stolen jewelry.
The show resonated with viewers, remaining on Netflix’s top 10 for five consecutive weeks after its release. With that kind of popularity, it was a no-brainer when Netflix picked up A Man on the Inside for a second season. “We are thrilled to make another season of A Man on the Inside, starring young up-and-comer Ted Danson,” Schur cheekily told Tudum. “From our partners at Netflix and Universal TV to the writers, cast, and crew, it’s a truly exceptional team of talented and lovely people, with one notable exception (young up-and-comer Ted Danson, who’s kind of a nightmare).”
While the first season was based on a true story (recounted in the Chilean documentary The Mole Agent), the new season goes off in a new direction by sending Charles on an assignment at Wheeler College, a liberal arts university, where he must infiltrate the campus as part of an investigation.

Danson is joined by a new cast — or should that be suspects? — for the new season. That includes: NCIS star Gary Cole as Brad Vinick, a wealthy executive who makes a hefty donation to his alma mater, which leads to Charles getting hired by Wheeler; Michaela Conlin as Andrea Yi, an economics professor who is excited by upcoming changes at Wheeler College; Max Greenfield as Jack Beringer, the college’s charismatic president, whose job requires him ingratiate himself with wealthy graduates and squeeze donations out of them; Sam Huntington as Max Griffin, a journalism professor with a gift for rabble-rousing; Jason Mantzoukas as Apollo Lambrakis, an contractor who dreams of writing the Great American Novel; Constance Marie as Vanessa, a former con artist who serves as a part-time source on the criminal underworld for Julie; David Strathairn as Dr. Cole, head of Wheeler’s English department at Wheeler College, and the most famous and popular professor on campus; Jill Talley as Holly Bodgemark, the college’s
overworked and perpetually frazzled provost; Madison Hu as Claire, a junior who works multiple campus jobs to pay for her tuition; Lisa Gilroy as Kelseigh Rose, a budding photographer and trophy wife of billionaire Brad Vinick; and Linda Park as Elizabeth Muki, director of the fine arts department.
Another new arrival is an actor quite close to Danson’s heart: his real-life wife Mary Steenburgen, who plays Mona Margadoff, a former musician who factors heavily into the

case that Charles is trying to solve at Wheeler.
In the first season, viewers first met Charles at a low point, bored out of his mind with retirement and eager to find his purpose. In his mid-70s, Danson can certainly relate. “I can feel that around my kids, who love and adore me,” he told Tudum. “They have very busy lives, and I get great joy out of being around them. When they’re too busy or don’t respond to a question or a text or a phone call, I can feel like my seat on the bus has gotten further and further back. I think that’s what happens a little bit with aging. All of a sudden, you have to find relevancy within, because you don’t always get it from without.”
For Danson, the message underlying the show is universal. “We tell our children, ‘You can do anything you want,’ when they’re growing up. ‘You can be anything. You can do anything. You’re magnificent.’ Why do we stop saying that to ourselves? All of a sudden, we buy into this shelf-life thing. Don’t. Keep your foot on the pedal. Don’t prepare for the end of your life. It’ll come. Just go as fast as you can.” ■

f the opening moments are any indication, viewers are in for a wild ride with the new action drama from Jon Bokenkamp, creator of The Blacklist. We see a handcuffed, hooded and padlocked prisoner brought onto an airplane already full of convicts. Armed guards chain this obviously very dangerous person to the airplane seat, but no locks in the world can contain this escape artist, who soon is picking the locks with a dental implant — just as an explosion

tears the plane apart, ripping out seats and causing general chaos — all as “Unchained Melody” plays in the background. All this takes place within the first five minutes of The Last Frontier.
In the 10-episode series, U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke) is tasked with keeping his remote Alaskan town safe when a plane full of prison inmates crashes nearby. But, as witnessed by the cold open, what Frank is in for is more than just your average searching-the-snow-for-clues manhunt. “I wanted to come in hot,” says Bokencamp. “I wanted to grab people by their collars and

throw ’em around a little bit and say, this is not going to be a drawing room drama. This is going to be fun, it’s going to be weird, it’s going to be unexpected.” Ultimately, Bokencamp wants the adrenaline rush at the start to be the hook that brings viewers in for the meat of the story. “There’s a lot of personal relationships that we’re unpacking,”
he says. “People are not necessarily who they present themselves to be. I liken it to some of these ’90s action movies — The Fugitive, Con Air, The Rock — but ultimately what viewers are going to remember are the people and what they’re going through.”
The Last Frontier is, in part, a show about what happens when you shake up the status quo. “Frank is a

“Frank is a guy who has gotten comfortable and accepted where he is. He lives in a small town. He knows what to expect from his job . . . Then, he’s suddenly tasked with something that he never imagined, and yet he’s holding onto a secret that might make him strangely prepared for this, in ways that he didn’t expect.”
guy who has gotten comfortable and accepted where he is,” says Bokencamp. “He lives in a small town. He knows what to expect from his job. The peaks and valleys are pretty narrow. Then, he’s suddenly tasked with something that he never imagined, and yet he’s holding onto a secret that might make him strangely prepared for this, in ways that he didn’t expect.” Frank may instinctively jump into third gear as soon as the call comes, but in reality, both character and actor were unprepared for how much they would enjoy rising to the challenge. “I remember filming this insane fight sequence, and going, ‘This is where you want to be,’” says Clarke. “You want choppers, you want cranes, you want burning 737s, and you want 50 extras that are martial artists coming out of the woods.”
Frank and his local team are soon joined by CIA Agent Sidney, who — as is the CIA’s tendency — dribbles information on a needto-know basis. “She is sent to the scene of this crime to regain order,” says Haley Bennett, who plays the enigmatic operative. “As the story unravels, she’s hunting for these characters, while also trying to protect her country, protect the agency and seek her truth. All of the characters are trying to seek the truth of what’s happening, and that is a very complex pursuit.”
Add to that the twisted relationship between hunter and huntee, which was already under investigation before the crash took place. “Sidney has plenty of demons in her closet,” says Bokenkamp. “This woman is showing up in this town. She’s not telling Frank everything. She has her own agenda. Frank knows there were 52 inmates on the plane, but all she’s interested in is this one inmate that was not on the manifest. So, from the beginning, Sidney and Frank are in opposite corners.”

Though the bulk of the shoot, which took place in the dead of winter in Quebec, sounds cold, wet and windy, this cast — which includes Luke Cage’s Alfre Woodard, Yellowjackets’ Simone Kessell and Preacher’s Dominic Cooper — could not have been more thrilled to share this extreme experience. “I’ve never worked anywhere as cold as Montreal,” says Clarke. “The morning we shot that big fight sequence, I came out of my tent and they asked me my thoughts. I open my mouth and I couldn’t talk. Yeah, it hurt. But it gives you stuff for free. You don’t need to perform too much. There’s a lot doing it for you.” And what the climate doesn’t already provide, the writing augments. “You read the pilot and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, this has so much depth to it,’” raves Cooper, whose character is key to the central mystery. “But at the same time, it’s a bunch of convicts that have crashed in a storm of fire and these characters arrive and you really want to know about them. That’s how I felt when I read it, and even more so when I watch it.” ■

Real-life drama unfolds as some of the world’s top chefs vie for an all-important Michelin star in Knife Edge
Friday, Apple TV
Whether you are a patron of fine dining or just a fan of Emily in Paris, the following thought surely has crossed your mind: Who are these mysterious food critics that rate restaurants for the Michelin Guide? For the first time ever, answers will be given, in Gordon Ramsay-produced documentary series Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars. The series follows elite chefs from around the world, in establishments from New York to Stockholm, as they pursue those sacred stars, and gives viewers a glimpse into the thought

process of the elusive inspectors that determine the fate of their restaurants.
Series host Jesse Burgess can’t quite believe the access they were granted for the purpose of the show. “I’ve heard that many TV production companies have tried to do this type of show with Michelin, but they are one of the most secretive agencies in the world and have been for 125 years,” he says. “This is a big deal.”
So big a deal, in fact, that you still couldn’t recognize a single person being interviewed if you tried. “You don’t actually see them, the voices are manipulated and the way the interviews were conducted was on a Zoom call with no video,” explains Burgess. “Even our producers wouldn’t be able to identify these people in public.”
The people you want to recognize are the restaurateurs whose blood, sweat and tears ensure such unique dining experiences that they warrant that hard-fought accolade. “Each episode has these awesome human journeys,” says Burgess, who traveled the world looking

not just for an exquisite meal, but a story behind the dish. “We had no way of knowing who was going to win a star,” says Burgess. “Effectively, the best stories made the show — and that’s regardless of whether they won a star, didn’t win a star or lost a star.” For Burgess, who describes himself as “your mate who’s a real foodie,”

what touched him most was the dedication the people behind the institutions put in, even when it was ruining them financially.
“I think there’s a common misconception, when you go to a restaurant and you pay a few hundred dollars to eat there, that the chef and everyone involved must be rich,” he says. “That is so far from the truth.”
The series highlights the true plight of keeping the doors to a restaurant open, and how a star can change the trajectory of an establishment, instantly raising their revenue. “This couple in Copenhagen basically poured everything they had into this restaurant and they try to get a Michelin star within three months. It is close to the knuckle for them,” teases Burgess. “I also really

like the story of a chef cooking Mexican food in Chicago. His family is in Mexico and he’s in Chicago, just trying to win a Michelin star so that he can get his family visas and bring them to Chicago. There’s so much on the line for him: his wife, his kids, his livelihood, all his staff’s livelihoods. And his food was probably the best I had on the show.”
You also don’t have to be a cooking enthusiast to indulge in Knife Edge, says its host. “I think this show is for anyone who likes a good story,” says Burgess. “To be honest, I watch loads of sport documentaries and I have no interest in actually going to a sports game or playing the sport. This, too, is watching humans pushing themselves to achieve greatness. It is so emotional — at times joyous, at times stressful, at times sad.” In fact, you gain little from knowing your Thomas
Kellers from your Daniel Bouluds. “We are not following the most famous chefs in the world,” adds Burgess. “This is about people that you probably would’ve never heard of. Knife Edge follows the first year Mexico ever had a Michelin awards [ceremony]. We also go to a restaurant in a very remote part of the Swedish forest, in an old sawmill, which is perhaps one of the most beautiful restaurants I’ve ever seen in my life. There really is a broad spectrum to this.”
As many still view Michelin star restaurants as serving expensive smears on plates, the series intends to broaden the perspective of what these establishments can look like. “Very few places that we feature have white tablecloths. Most of the restaurants have open kitchens. It is very similar to a more casual dining experience these days than it was 40 years ago,” says Burgess. “You say they’re not hangout meals — they can be. In the Michelin race in Mexico – we didn’t film here but we really wish we did — a humble taco hole in the wall won a Michelin star. These inspectors are truly there to judge the food on the plate.” ■

Ken Burns has been producing blue-chip documentaries for PBS for decades, all boasting a distinctly American perspective.
While past topics have ranged from jazz music to baseball to prohibition to the Civil War, his latest stretches back to the very origin story of the country. Over the course of 12 hours, spread across six consecutive nights (beginning Sunday and concluding Friday), The American Revolution (which Burns
co-directed with David Schmidt and Sarah Botstein) tells the story of how a ragtag army, led by a general who would become the new nation’s first president, overthrew one of Europe’s most powerful monarchies and introduced modern-day democracy.
“I think this is one of the most important events in world history,” says Burns. “It’s certainly the most consequential revolution, as we say, but I think it’s the most important event since the birth of Christ.”
That may seem an audacious statement, but the film makes a solid case for that argument, recounting how 13 British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion, won their independence and established a new form of government that

radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe.
According to the PBS synopsis, the film provides ”an expansive look at the virtues and contradictions of the war and the birth of the United States of America,” telling the individual stories of the rankand-file Continental soldiers and American militiamen (some of them teenagers), Patriot political and military leaders, British Army officers, American loyalists, Native soldiers and civilians, enslaved and free African Americans, German soldiers in the British service, French and Spanish allies, and various civilians.
Assisting Burns in telling these stories are an impressive roster of actors, including Peter Coyote (who’s narrated dozens of Burns’ previous docs), Adam Arkin, Kenneth Branagh, Josh Brolin, Hugh Dancy, Claire Danes, Tom Hanks, Damian Lewis, Tobias Menzies, Matthew Rhys and Liev Schreiber
don’t. “Because every day of our production, Sarah and Dave and I were going, ‘Wow, I didn’t know that,’” he said of the historical facts they unearthed while making the
“I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS IN WORLD HISTORY. It’s certainly the most consequential revolution, as we say, but I think it’s the most important event since the birth of Christ.”

Revolution not shy away from the inherent violence that underscored everything during that legendary war. “This is a revolution, a bloody, bloody revolution, superimposed by a bloody civil war, superimposed by a bloody world war. The cast of characters is extraordinary. There’s an unbelievable variety of a cast of characters,” he said.
As Burns points out, the American Revolution did not take place in a vacuum, and while it’s typically depicted as disgruntled settlers unshackling themselves from the taxation without representation of the British monarchy, the conflict wound up ensnaring much of Europe.
It’s no secret that America is prone to mythologizing its history and heroes, and one of Burns’ goals is to dig deeper into stories that viewers think they know, but actually
series. “There’s a lot of superficiality to the way we teach any kind of history, and it sometimes migrates, as certainly the revolution has done, into mythology, so the chopping down of the cherry tree and never telling a lie, and throwing a dollar coin, you know, don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes, all the kind of mythology,” he adds.
In that vein, Burns was also insistent that The American
“It’s a world war fought between dozens of nations in North America and in Europe. It’s so many things,” adds Schmidt.
“It’s a world war. It’s a civil war. It was making itself up the way life does as it was going, but it’s an enormous underdog story and really a surprising story,” notes Bottstein. “It’s our creation story,” Burns adds. “And we should be enormously proud, but not burdened by all the mythology that has attended to it up to this point.” ■
STARRING: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman
The third entry in the franchise continues the exploits of a group of stage magicians who use their mind-bending illusions to pull seemingly impossible heists.

QIn your role as the presenter here, do you feel you’re channelling a bit of your old SNL newsman persona — striking a strait-laced tone that’s simultaneously tongue-in-cheek?
AOh yes, for sure. The use of the voice and the authoritativeness . . . but also in this show, I connect in that way that you say, taking the air out of the tires. I’m delivering it straight and stentorian, but [as if] I couldn’t believe some of them myself. “I’m telling you folks it’s true, but I defy your imaginations here!” I’m also channelling a bit of Robert Stack on Unsolved Mysteries Stacy Keach on American Greed. Shatner, I’m channelling him [from Rescue 911 ]. Some of these great, great narrators that I so admire. A little bit of Cronkite in there. I’m having a ball with it . . . It’s acting, and it’s just about all the acting I wanna do right now.
Q You’ve also always had some connection to the otherworldly . . .
A No doubt. I was raised as a spiritualist and raised to believe that not only does the spirit survive after we drop our body’s shell, but that consciousness lives on and can be reached with a good trance channel medium; you can get through to people who’ve gone before. When I was a kid, I was inspired by the work of my great-grandfather [Dr. Samuel Augustus Aykroyd]. Around the house were his writings in all these publications that dealt with this material. Growing up to write Ghostbusters was inspired by my greatgrandfather’s work.
So, I’ve always been open to it, but
After cutting his sketch-comedy teeth with Second City, in 1975

I’ve always wanted to make sure that the hoaxes are sorted out from the real thing. I think it’s important to be a skeptic in all this.
QOn that note, do you think it’s crucial for an artist to see the world from a slightly off-kilter POV?
AWell, for sure, an oblique angle has really helped people like Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner and Billy Murray . . . and directors like Stanley Kubrick. Open-mindedness is essential to the creative process. If you don’t have openmindedness, you’re closing yourself off to so many possibilities. Your characterization of it as coming from an angle that’s not straight-on applies to so many of the great artists that we see, whether in visual arts or film or television or music.
QWhat sorts of “unbelievable” events have you witnessed in your own life?
A I have had a couple of vivid sightings of what they call UAPs — unexplained aerial phenomena. And both of them were

close-up . . . I survived a 50-foot fall from a warehouse roof to the floor when I was an actor in Toronto; I opened up my faith a little further to the divine in that intervention.
Q As one of the show’s original cast members and writers, can you reflect on the Saturday Night Live experience?
A I do know how hard they work, that’s for sure. I can speak with authority on exactly what it takes to come in Monday, pitch, go away, do a little writing, come back Tuesday, stay all night. I had bunk beds in Rockefeller Center, and a shower, put in for me. Then Wednesday, you get there at four o’clock and you gotta figure out how to put it on its feet. Thursday, Friday blocking. And you do three shows on Saturday: a rough dress, a full dress and then you do the show. These people work very hard. The results look smooth, but I know what goes on behind the scenes, so I admire it and I like to see it done. And I’m really happy to watch this new cast evolve.

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
