WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK!
THE MINIATURE WIFE
Lindy (Elizabeth Banks) had already been feeling diminished in her longtime marriage to Les (Matthew Mcfadyen), a scientist working on a technological breakthrough that can shrink objects to miniscule size. That diminishment becomes all too literal when Les turns the tech on his wife, reducing her to six inches in height. The actors and showrunner Jennifer Ames tell TV Week how it all unfolds in their audacious new dramedy The Miniature Wife.

Star Steve Carell and series creators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses discuss their hit series about a novelist who reconnects with his troubled daughter by taking a job at the college where she works as a professor.

As the beloved time-travelling drama enters its farewell stretch, the actors open up about what viewers can expect to see in this fourth and final season of Hallmark Channel favourite The Way Home
EDITOR’S NOTE
GOOD OMENS WRAPS AFTER CONTROVERSY
One of my favourite series of the past few years has been Good Omens, the comedic saga of an angel, Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), and a demon, Crowley (David Tennant), who team up to prevent the apocalypse.
The second season ended on a cliffhaner, with Crowley professing his love to Aziraphale, asking him to shirk his duties and run offwith him. Sadly, he rejects the offer, instead returning to Heaven to become Supreme Archangel.
In this series final, Aziraphale has come to regret that decision. Tasked by the Metatron (Derek Jacobi) with overseeing the Second Coming, it all goes terribly wrong when he accidentally loses track of Jesus (Bilal Hasna), who winds up wandering around Earth with a crew of demons in hot pursuit. Predictably, Aziraphale turns to Crowley to help him sort it all out.
Originally intended as a third season, the story was condensed into a standalone 90-minute episode mid-production when Neil Gaiman (who co-authored the novel Good Omens, and was heavily involved in the series) was hit with shocking allegations of sexual misconduct, forcing producers to quickly pivot.

WEDNESDAY, PRIME VIDEO
In fact, the once-acclaimed author is now so toxic that Good Omens is just one of several Gaiman-inspired projects to be snuffed. Netflix aed Sandman after its second season, and then killed the spinoff, Dead Boy Detectives, after just one season. Meanwhile, Disney’s plan to adapt Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book is indefinitel postponed, while Prime Video is sitting on a big-budget miniseries based on his 2005 novel Anansi Boys (a sequel to American Gods) that remains in limbo, even though production was completed back in 2022. Delroy Lindo, who reprised his American Gods role of Mr. Nancy (a.k.a. African trickster god Anansi), isn’t hopeful that Anansi Boys will be released any time soon — or even at all. “I don’t think that’ll ever see the light of day,” Lindo told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s too bad on many levels, but I was really excited to do it.”

SPIES VS. SPIES
When Citadel debuted back in 2023, the action-packed espionage thriller generated headlines for its US$300million budget, making the six-episode first season one of the most expensive series in TV history. The seven-episode second season has finally arrived, continuing the exploits of Mason Kane (Richard Madden), Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), elite operatives for a legendary intelligence agency that was destroyed by Manticore, a nefarious network of spies backed by the world’s wealthiest families. “When a terrifying new threat emerges, the three are pulled back into action,” reads the logline. “Now they must recruit an unlikely team of skilled new operatives and launch a globe-spanning mission to stop a conspiracy that could reshape humanity.” Along with returnees Lesley Manville and Ashleigh Cummings, the expanded ensemble cast now includes Jack Reynor, Lina El Arabi and What We Do in The Shadows alum Matt Berry

A HEARTFELT FAREWELL?
Curious if Heartstopper on Netflix will come back?
Been quite a long while since the last season . . .
—K.N., Burnaby
The coming-of-age romance between U.K. teens Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) originally ran for three seasons (2022-2024), created by Alice Oseman based on her own graphic novels. The show, alas, will not return for a fourth, but it is getting a wrap-up film title Heartstopper Forever, set to debut Friday, July 17, on Netflix. The synopsis teases: “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet . . . Can firstloves really last forever?”
Out of the Blue?
I’ve been watching a fair bit of Boston Blue. It’s solid. But I’m wondering why they’d cancel Blue Bloods if they were just planning to do a whole spinoff anywa?
—D.J., Coquitlam
Blue Bloods — CBS’s fan-fave procedural about the on-thejob and at-the-dinner-table dramatics the Reagan family-ofcops got up to in New York City — began in 2010 and had its 21-gun salute 14 seasons later, in 2024.
At the time, there was a push from Tom Selleck, who played Reagan patriarch/NYC police commissioner Frank, to keep the show going. Alas, his pleas — and those of the fans — fell on deaf ears.
As for why CBS would greenlight spinoff Boston Blue — following Donnie Wahlberg’s Det. Danny Reagan as he relocates from the Big Apple to Beantown — while cancelling the original? Well, it comes down to money. TV shows get more expensive the longer they run, given cast and crew raises. So, it’s simply cheaper to do a spinoff centred on one legac star and a few new recruits.
On the topic of cost-cutting, shooting in Toronto instead of Boston (or the original show’s NYC) didn’t hurt the bottom line, either . . . even though Wahlberg, a true-blue Bostonian, reportedly offered t forgo half his salary if producers would film in Beantown. All told a handful of Boston Blue scenes were shot in the real Boston, but mostly it was a Canadian affai.
A behind-the-scenes pic from the set of the farewell film that will cap off acclaimed coming-of-age series Heartstopper. The movie hits Netflix on Friday, July 17.

The Lost Generation?
Been catching up on this new season of The Boys, and now just wondering what’s up with Gen V?

I’m puzzled. I loved Jameson Parker, who played A.J. on Simon & Simon. On Google, it says he was also in Family Law, one of my other faves. I’ve seen every episode, but have never seen my heartthrob!
–Z.I., Vancouver
Jameson Parker played A.J. Simon for 156 episodes (1981-1989) of the iconic private eye drama, opposite the great Gerald McRaney as elder brother Rick. Despite legitimate acting chops and drop-dead gorgeous good looks, Parker tended to make his living popping by as a one- or two-episode guest star in such series as Hart to Hart, Magnum, P.I. and Family. Prior to landing on Simon & Simon, his most substantial gig was a 120-episode run on daytime soap One Life to Live from 1976 until 1978.
Soaps don’t attract the audiences that primetime shows enjoy, so Parker’s talents remained largely undiscovered until he hit it big with Simon & Simon
to spinoffs lie cartoon anthology The Boys Presents: Diabolical and, as you mention, Gen V.
The latter took audiences into the hallowed halls of Godolkin University (“God U,” for short), where promising young “Supes” were trained to become the next generation of caped crusaders/vertical integrators. After a wellreceived freshman year in 2023, season two arrived on Prime this past September.
But we’re sad to report that school is out, as Gen V has been cancelled by the
When that show ended, he was back to doing brief guest stints in dramas like Murder, She Wrote, Burke’s Law and JAG
His appearance on Family Law was another one-off — and a confusing on at that! The Family Law you’re thinking of is a B.C.-set courtroom drama starring Jewel Staite and Victor Garber, which ran four seasons on Global, from 2021 to 2026. A slick, smart and beautifully produced affai, it showcased the Lower Mainland in spectacular fashion. Alas, it was not a showcase for Parker, who appeared in an altogether differen show with the same title. That Family Law aired for three seasons (1999-2022) on CBS — co-created by Canadian Paul Haggis, of Due South and Crash fame.
streamer, and will not see a season three.
That said, franchise producers Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg issued a joint statement to reassure fans that Marie (Jaz Sinclair) and her fellow heroesin-training haven’t been expelled from the Vought Cinematic Universe. “While we wish we could keep the party going another season at Godolkin, we’re committed to continuing the Gen V characters’ stories in The Boys season five and other VCU projects on the horizon,” Goldberg and
Kripke explained. “You’ll see them again.” (At time of press, the God U kids had, indeed, been mentioned in The Boys’ farewell season, but hadn’t yet appeared.)
Despite this cancellation, Prime is still keen to expand their Boys-verse, with a 1950s-set prequel titled Vought Rising slated for 2027. It’ll centre on Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) in the early days of the Vought Corporation, as the company’s twisted experiments Supe up the human race . . .

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher may have sat out season two of Daredevil: Born Again — but that was only so he could return with a literal vengeance in this new film, hitting Disney+ a week after Born Again’s final.
Celebrating his 10th anniversary playing Marvel’s most antiheroic hero, Bernthal’s take on Frank Castle debuted in season two of the original Netflix ersion of Daredevil, wherein the grizzled ex-Marine waged a one-man war on New York City’s underworld to avenge the murder of his wife and child. That led to two seasons of a Netflix Punisher series, followed by a guest arc on season one of Disney+’s Born Again revival.
In One Last Kill, we find Frank seeking a deeper meaning in life than just eviscerating evil-doers, only to be drawn back to his murderous ways by an “unexpected force.” Beyond starring, Bernthal co-wrote the script alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green, with

whom he previously worked on HBO miniseries We Own This City. Chatting with Games Radar, the actor teased that the film is partially inspired by seminal 2000 comic book Welcome Back, Frank, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Per Bernthal, Dillon and Ennis “gave us a character with clarity of purpose and absolute commitment, someone who channels loss into action with brutal honesty. That ferocity and vulnerability is what makes Frank endure . . . Welcome Back, Frank doesn’t ask you to love Frank; it asks you to look at him clearly, without flinchin. BETH & RIP STAKE THEIR CLAIM!
Yellowstone rode off into the sunset back in 2024, but creator Taylor Sheridan still has plans for the Dutton clan.
Since early March, we’ve been riding shotgun with Kayce (Luke Grimes) in CBS’s Marshals. Now, we check in with elder sister Beth (Kelly Reilly), her rugged husband Rip (Cole Hauser) and their adopted son Carter (Finn Little) on Dutton Ranch, as they’re all forced out of Montana, and look to build a new empire in South Texas. Alas, as much as their old lives were fraught with enemies and intrigue aplenty, they now find themselves i an unfamiliar territory where “blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting and the cost of survival might just be your soul”
Occupying the role of Big Bad, five-time Oscar nomine Annette Bening plays Beulah Jackson, a fellow rancher with a Machiavellian streak and a family of unpredictable sons. Also lending a little A-list prestige to the ensemble is Ed Harris as weathered yet warm-hearted veterinarian Everett McKinney.
Director Greg Yaitanes worked on both Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Comparing the two in a chat with Collider, he said the latter is “much more of a drama and a soap. It has the best parts of what I loved about Yellowstone. Each [spinoff ] was Yellowstone in completely differentways, but each completely honest to the original series . . . The themes that everybody’s working with, like how everybody deals with their inner torment and how they exorcise it, is different for Beth than it is for Kayce. They’re equally compelling offshoots of the original.”

course, in classic potboiler fashion, it all comes down to “one last big job.” The cast also features The Wire’s Domenick Lombardozzi as streetwise fellow detective Dave Cerullo, and Black Rabbit’s Cleopatra Coleman as Coltrane’s wife/partner-incrime Ebony, who’s desperate for her husband to stop living on the razor’s edge.
Netflix describes this eiht-parter as “the tale of what happens when an unstoppable force (an expert criminal) meets an immovable object (a brilliant police detective). What starts as a subversion of the heist genre, amped by thrilling life-or-death stakes, family dynamics and explosive action, becomes an exploration of what drives us, sustains us and ultimately destroys us.”

Some Harty Laughter!
Less than a week after the finale of his standup competition Funny AF, Kevin Hart is back with another live Netflix comedy event. This time, however, he’s not hosting or judging. Rather, he’s the butt of the jokes.
Boldly going where the likes of William Shatner, Pamela Anderson, Chevy Chase, Charlie Sheen, James Franco, Justin Bieber, Donald Trump and, most recently, Tom Brady have gone before, the Philadelphia-born comic will be roasted by a panel of his peers, taking the stage at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, on the final dy of the annual “Netflix s a Joke” festival.
The exact group tasked with
eviscerating the funnyman of the hour is still TBA, but we do know that his fellow standup Shane Gillis is emceeing.
No doubt, the stage will be packed with heavy hitters, all eager to come at one of the comedy world’s most successful performers, pulling no punchlines. But if anyone can take that lickin’ and keep on quippin’, it’s Hart — who endured a lifetime of false starts and hard knocks before rising to his current superstar
status. Reflecting on his may rejections in a 2025 chat with Fortune, the comedian himself said: “I can’t narrow it down to one. Not getting into comedy clubs early on in my career. Not getting chosen for comedy festivals early on in my career. Not getting movie roles that I thought were perfect roles for me. Not getting SNL when I thought SNL was the biggest and best thing for me . . . There are so many things that, if they would have happened, my career wouldn’t have shaped up into what it is today.”

CHERISHED MEMORIES
She is, undoubtedly, best known for her turn as delightfully flighty Phoebe Buffay o Friends. But shortly after that NBC juggernaut ended its 10-season run, Lisa Kudrow headed up another series that would, in its own roundabout way, make an indelible mark on the mosaic of TV comedy.
Starting in 2005, HBO’s The Comeback cast Kudrow as Valerie Cherish, a down-and-out actress trying to extend her 15 minutes by starring in a reality show. It was critically adored but little-watched, leading to a swift cancellation after just one season. In 2014, it was rebooted . . . then cancelled. Now, in 2026 . . . well, here we are again with yet another “series final.” But through all this tumult, a diehard fanbase has remained, and The Comeback has been able to position itself for uniquely timely commentary on multiple showbiz eras and emergent trends like reality TV, the decline of broadcast and, just recently, the emergence of AI. And while this third season has been billed as the final one from the moment HBO announced it, don’t be surprised if Valerie Cherish returns to skewer whatever conundrums await the television landscape circa the 2030s.

Everyone Is Doing Great
MONDAY, NETFLIX
You fist saw them together on teen drama One Tree Hill, circa 2004-2012. Then, in 2021, former castmates James Lafferty (who played Nathan Scott) and Stephen Colletti (a.k.a. Chase Adams) shared the screen once again — this time with a showbiz satire they not only starred in, but created. Alas, for us Canadians, the show was a little tough to come by, given that it streamed on the U.S.-only Hulu.
Yet that’s all about to change thanks to Netflix, which has picked up the international rights and will re-stream that fist season Monday, along with a brand-new second one. The original synopsis of Everyone Is Doing Great reads as follows: “Five years after the end of their hit TV vampire drama, Eternal, Seth [Colletti] and Jeremy [Lafferty] lean on each other as they awkwardly navigate the perils of life and love.” Even in territories
where it was available, the show was relatively little-seen back in 2021. Yet it did garner mostly positive reviews, including one from the Sydney Morning Herald, which pegged the off beat comedy as “an uncommonly acute examination of male humiliation.”
Now, Lafferty and Colletti get a second chance to hone their concept, and for a much larger audience. As Paul Littmann, executive vice president of worldwide distribution for studio Sony Pictures Television, teased: “What James and Stephen have created with Everyone Is Doing Great captures what makes great indie television so compelling — it’s raw, authentic, hilarious and full of heart.”
Furthermore, a summary for season two promises that the duo will continue to “grapple with the absurd and the uncertain” in Hollywood.

As for his future plans, the 76-year-old Canadian has no intention of packing it in anytime soon. “I’m not a believer in retirement just based on a number,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s designed for people who don’t really like their job and then they want to relax or they’re tired or they just want to do something else.

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
THE HIGH-OCTANE WORLD of Formula 1 racing came to the big screen with last year’s Brad Pitt-starring blockbuster F1, but where are all the TV series focusing on the intense drama of professional car racing? Fear not, for AMC has entered a partnership with NASCAR for an upcoming series that will feature fast cars, a Hollywood veteran in the leading role, and a title lifted from a Bruce Springsteen classic.
Thunder Road is described as “a multi-generational saga of the Whitlock family, whose legacy in stock car racing is as deep as the family’s ties to the southern hill country roots that shaped them,” according to the series’ official lline.
Start Your Engines!
Dennis Quaid is set to star as family patriarch Duane “The Wrecking Ball” Whitlock, “a NASCAR legend” and “a towering figue who built a racing empire from a legacy of moonshine runs and dirt tracks . . . and refuses to let it die. This is a story about a blue-collar dynasty at the edge of extinction — and the old king fihting to hold onto his crown.”
The series reflects ASCAR’s new strategy to expand beyond
live racing into the arena of fictional stortelling. This is not an entirely new phenomenon; the NFL has already teamed up with Hallmark Channel for two (and counting) Holiday Touchdown TV movies, the fist featuring the Kansas City Chiefs, while the second focused on the Buffalo Bills.
Thunder Road will tap into the rich history of NASCAR, which originated in moonshine-runners during Prohibition. At that time, bootleggers realized that when they transported illegal hootch distilled in the Appalachian region, they required faster cars that could outpace police cars. That led to mechanics modifying vehicles to result in a small, speedy car that could leave police in the dust. Over time, these modified cas began being raced, opening the door to NASCAR’s current status as a company with revenue in the billions, holding more than 1,500 races on over 100 different tracks each year.
This high-profile nw project is the creation of John Fusco, the screenwriter behind such movies such as Young Guns and The Highwaymen, and creator of popular Netflix series Marco Polo
Dennis Quaid will star as the patriarch of a car-racing dynasty in Thunder Road, a new series produced in partnership with NASCAR.
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
A gruelling new competition series will be coming to Netflix, set to be hosted by its creator: Reacher star Alan Ritchson, recently seen in the Netflix feature War Machine.
“Who better to help you survive in the wilderness than experienced outdoorsman and all-around action hero Alan Ritchson?” asks the logline for the upcoming series, described as a “survival competition that tests the resilience and grit of a group of high-profile influencer and headline-makers. With all the comforts and luxuries of modern-day life stripped away, the players will have to rely on their instincts, determination, and each other to outlast the competition and discover who they are without fame and followers.”
The identities of those heading into the wilderness with Ritchson have yet to be revealed, but whoever makes the grade will have their work cut out for them. “Do they have what it truly takes to endure?” the press release
JOST KIDDING
adds. “Will they risk losing their carefully curated personas in the process? And who will break first under the pressure?”
The heavily-muscled actor, who’s become renowned for performing his own stunts, will be at the centre of the action. “As an avid survivalist, Ritchson will help guide the participants through the competition, pushing them beyond their limits and into the unknown,” the release adds.
While the cast has yet to be announced, a reality TV website known for breaking scoops unveiled its roster of rumoured participants, which includes: Tom Sandoval (Vanderpump Rules); Matt James (The Bachelor); Andrea Boehlke (Survivor); Natalie Anderson (Survivor); Yeremi Hykel (The Amazing Race); Corinne Olympios (The Bachelor); Ashley Mitchell (The Challenge); Chelsie Baham (Big Brother); Natalie Eva Marie (former WWE pro wrestler); Chase DeMoor (Too Hot to Handle); Jason Tartick (The Bachelor); and infamous Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland.
Colin Jost already has several irons in the fir, and now he’s adding one more. In addition to his regular gig coanchoring Weekend Update on NBC’s Saturday Night Live alongside fellow faux anchorman Michael Che, and his side hustle hosting Netflixs Pop Culture Jeopardy!, Jost is attached to star in a potential new drama series for the Peacock streaming service.
The as-yet-untitled series is based on the first season of the udacy true crime podcast Wolves Among Us. The official description for the project reads “By day, Larry Lavin was a respected Ivy League dentist and family man — by night, the East Coast’s most elusive cocaine kingpin. This series is inspired by the shocking and absurd true story
of the suburban dentist who built a drug empire behind the façade of the American dream.”
If the series does come to fruition, in addition to starring as Lavin, Jost would also do double duty as executive producer, through his No Notes Productions (which, like NBC and Peacock, is a subsidiary of Comcastowned NBCUniversal).
Overseeing the project is screenwriter Alex Barnow, who’ll act as showrunner. Barnow’s eclectic résumé includes a stint on Family Guy, co-creating the Matthew Perry sitcom Mr. Sunshine, serving as a writer-producer on all 10 seasons of The Goldbergs, and as consulting producer on upcoming Starz series Power: Origins

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV
TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

ANYONE IN A LONG RELATIONSHIP can relate to its challenges. In the case of scientist Les Littlejohn (Matthew McFadyen) and his wife Lindy (Elizabeth Banks), it has resulted in the couple leading two separate lives. Although they once had a pact to take turns supporting each other, neither now feels taken care of, which in the case of these two has led to loud

resentment. “Even though they’re doing couples therapy and making grand gestures, it’s all very empty,” says Banks, whose character feels it is her turn to focus on her career as an author. “They’re actually avoiding having any real deep conversation about what’s going on with them. And the moment they actually go at each other, say the things they’re not supposed to say and cross all the lines, he shrinks her.”
The shrinking part is no metaphor. In fact, when Banks and McFadyen signed on to play Lindy and Les, the

assumption was that the two heavyweight actors would get to play opposite each other. But — as the title The Miniature Wife suggests once scientist Les literally shrinks his Pulitzer Prize-winning wife to the size of a coffee cup, the two are on their individual journeys. “We were unprepared for how little we would see each other,” admits Banks. “We thought we’d be together more. But I think it’s enriching in that the themes then become about that sense of isolation from each other, which is where they are as characters. One of the cool things about the show is that it’s told in many layers. There’s high-stakes, absurd comedy happening where she is little and he is big, but then there are great reminders from the past about what you’re rooting for.”
The physical separation between the two leads is on brand with the themes of the series, based on Manuel Gonzales’ short story from 2013. “Funnily enough, Manuel Gonzales’ short story is told entirely from Les’ point of view,” says Banks. “It really was just the jumping off point of the

exploration of a relationship when you feel isolated from someone and then you actually isolate them.” When we fist meet Les and Lindy, the two of them being equal in size does not translate to closeness, in fact, far from it. “They’ve gotten lost from each other, which happens in relationships,” says McFadyen. “They’ve been married for 20 years, and they both feel resentful. Both of them are at a loss as to how to get back and how to reconnect. It’s easier to avoid it.”
When screenwriter duo Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner read the short story, they felt it was ripe for potential. “In the short story, which is very dark, the wife does not have a name. He knows nothing about her, so for us, it was very exciting because it gave us the scaffolding,” says Ames. “We were able to create so much of it, which was very appealing to us.” It was when the two started imagining the experience from Lindy’s perspective that the series really took
‘‘
shape. “That’s when the metaphor became real,” says Turner. “She felt so small in this relationship, and then literally she’s six inches tall. It immediately jumped off the pge as War of the Roses meets The Incredible Shrinking Woman — those big ’80s, ’90s comedies that we loved. And then the story plays out in this lovely way that you don’t expect, it almost becomes heartbreaking.”
For the writers, there was one aspect of the source material that had to fundamentally change for the material to work as a series with a potential second season. “It gets a little dicey between these two, but we really wanted to make sure that you were rooting for the couple and that you do love Les and Lindy,” says Ames. “Whether you side with Les or Lindy is totally up to you, and you can change teams throughout. But we really wanted to make sure there was something more optimistic about it and fun.” The levity of the show comes
Lindy (Elizabeth Banks) had been having an affair with needy, nerdy RPW (O-T Fagbenle).’
from absurd moments in the lab where Les struggles to find an antidote a well as from Lindy’s struggle in a giant world. “When you’re telling this kind of an extreme story, the absurdity allows the audience to relax a little bit,” says Turner. “Once they relax, that’s when you can really hit them with the drama.”
There was no question that the show needed two heavy hitters to go from ridiculous comedy to heartbreaking drama. “What Elizabeth does so well about this is that as confident as Lindy is, sh’s insecure,” says Ames. “Just walking that line, I think Elizabeth has embraced and elevated the character and made it her own in such a way that I really feel all of that resonates. Elizabeth herself is a force and we’re literally knocking her down to six inches tall. I think her ability to remain strong and vulnerable in those moments, that, to me, is like a chef’s kiss.” When Ames say they knocked Banks around, that is no metaphor either. “Elizabeth did a lot of those stunts. She was on wires and jumping around. I mean, she did everything,” says Turner. “And on the other side, I think on paper, Les could be a real jerk. He shrinks his wife! I mean, how do you buy that back? The only way you buy that back is if you have somebody who has the layers of humility and humanity inside them. That’s why you get Matthew to do this.”
In the case of the TV adaptation, a big selling point is the pure fun of the series, from the legitimately insane supporting characters to a miniature world built to scale for Banks to play in. “Our goal was to really make as many giant props as we could because that’s the way for her to really feel grounded in this story,” says Turner. “The more grounded she felt, the better the scenes were. So, we did everything under the sun we could to make her feel tiny, and I think it worked.”

Star Steve Carell and series creators Bill Lawrence
discuss their hit comedy Rooster
WHEN LONGTIME
collaborators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses (who’d worked together on Scrubs and, more recently, Bad Monkey), began thinking about developing a new TV series, the fist thing they tackled was the question of who’d be starring in it. “We talked about creating a show together and we started from a place of ‘Who would we want to do it with? And Steve, not to blow smoke, he made the massive mistake of entertaining the idea of even talking to us,” recalls Lawrence of how they immediately honed in on building a show around Steve Carell. “And what a gift, right, when an actor/performer that you admire for their work also turns out to be the type of person that you would wish they would be,” Lawrence adds.

Carell was intrigued, and when the three got together to throw around ideas, they all realized they were the fathers of grown daughters — and had shared a similar experience. “We all found that we are all right now wrestling with what it means to be the parent of a young woman who is entered into adulthood and maybe does not want you in their life as much as you would choose to be intrusive and be in their life and control every aspect of it,” Lawrence explains.
And that was how Rooster was born, the story of Greg Russo (Carell), a successful novelist who accepts a gig teaching creative writing at Ludlow College, where his daughter Katie (Charly Clive) is a professor. Katie, however, is in the midst of a messy split from her husband Archie (Ted Lasso standout Phil Dunster), who is also a prof at the college.
Meanwhile, Archie is grappling with impending fatherhood — not with Katie, but with his graduate student Sunny (Lauren Tsai). Further complicating this comedic web is the college’s dean, Walter Mann (John C. McGinley), who’s just named a wing

Carell knew that Rooster would work when he read the script for the pilot. “It felt very lived-in,” says Carell. “And pilots are really hard to write, because it’s all exposition, it’s setting up a new world, setting up these characters no one has any familiarity with. And these guys were able to thread the needle, having all of that and making it funny as well and inviting you in.”
When it came to casting the show, Lawrence turned to actors with whom he had some prior experience.
Steve Carell stars as Greg Russo, whose beach-read novels about a private investigator nicknamed Rooster have brought him to Ludlow College.
“I’ve worked with John C. McGinley on Scrubs,” Lawrence recalls. “I’ve worked with Phil on Ted Lasso. Connie Britton and Alan Ruck were both in Spin City . . . for me, the gift of doing what we do is if you’re lucky enough to get to make something and there are people that are incredibly talented whose voices you know in your head and you might be able to skip some steps, and are people that you want to spend time with in real life anyway, I think you’re insane not to do it.”
That, in fact, was how Lawrence came up with a defining idiosyncasy for McGinley’s character. According to Lawrence, Walter’s propensity to sweat in a tiny sauna and then immerse himself in a tub full of ice water is actually a real-life hobby for the actor who plays him — which he’d experienced fisthand as a guest in McGinley’s real-life, self-built sauna. “And then when you think it’s over, he puts you in a cold plunge thing and he looms over you and doesn’t allow you to get out of it and he said, ‘Your body’s responding positively ’cause it feels like you’re dying.’ So we decided to steal his life and put that in the show.”
And while viewers have been able to enjoy the results in the fist season of Rooster (it’s already been greenlit for a second season), for Carell, the experience on the set has been just as important as the quality of the finished poduct. “The chemistry between us as human beings, I knew this was going to be one of the most enjoyable . . . you never know how it’s gonna turn out,” he says. “You can have all the best components — great writing, great everything — and you just don’t know . . . nobody cares, watching at home, like, whether the actors had fun doing the show, frankly. But there was a sense of joy to it, and for me that was everything. And if it turns out to be a great show, that’s icing on the cake.”
Greg (Steve Carell) is enticed into taking the job at Ludlow College by the school’s dean, Walter Mann (John C. McGinley).
Hallmark Channel’s time-travelling family fourth and finl season
The time has come to say farewell to The Way Home, but the cast of the time travel drama is far from ready to leave Port Haven behind. “It’s really bittersweet because this is something that we all care about so much,” says Sadie Laflamm-Snow, who for the past four seasons has played teenage Alice in this highly unusual coming-of-age story. “We’ve made an onscreen family, of course, but also an on-set family. So the idea that it was coming to an end was really hard, but

at the same time, I think that we all trust our showrunners and our writers so much. I never had any question about whether the things that we wanted to see happen were going to happen.”
There are, of course, many threads to tie up. At the end of season three, Landry family matriarch Del (Andie MacDowell) time travelled for the fist time, hand in hand with daughter Kat (Chyler Leigh), to her own wedding to Colton (Jordan Doww) in the 1970s, where questions arise about Colton’s mysterious brother. Meanwhile, in the present, Elliot (Evan Williams) discovered a note from his mother who abandoned him as a baby, setting in motion a time-travelling storyline for the one character that has until now been rooted in the here and now. “Elliot has spent a lot of time being the one who’s like, ‘Don’t time travel. Don’t do it. It’s not safe.’ And while I understand, from the character’s point of view, that he’s doing the best he can and that’s how he shows his love, it’s also a time travel show,” says Williams. “I think there is this whisper

from the pond that’s like, ‘Elliot . . . ’” What Elliot discovers, once he descends into the pond, is about to alter everything he has built his sense of self on. “It’s like a thread, that when it’s pulled, everything unravels,” says Williams. “Elliot’s whole idea of who he is, what his family means and who the Landrys are, that’s maybe all going to unravel. But then there’s also a lot of healing potential on the other side.” While time travel is fun, it is the ponderings on what makes a family that Williams and the rest

of the cast believe is the real meat of the show. “One of the beautiful things that the writers do is that they treat the stuff inside the amily — things that would be typically domestic — as deep, varied and seismic,” says Williams. “I think that’s why audiences have really taken to it, because it’s relatable and the show hasn’t pulled any punches with how complicated [family relations] can be and also how rewarding it can be to investigate it.”
For Alice, who this season graduates from high school, the past is the least of her problems. “She’s really nervous about the future,” says Laflamm-Snow. “She has found a home in Port Haven — somewhere she never thought she would like, somewhere she never thought she
would belong. Now, it’s everything to her. All these experiences that she’s had, jumping in the pond and getting to the bottom of family mysteries, has given her a really big purpose. And as much as I think her experiences in season three with younger Colton reinvigorated her love for music and she started dreaming again about her future, I don’t know that she’s ready to be far away from this phase of her life.”
Alice not wanting to leave her mother is a far cry from her introduction to Kat, who in season one could not see eye to eye on anything. The evolution of that mother-daughter relationship has reverberated for Leigh and LaflammSnow offscreen as well. “The growth between the two of them is so much of a mirror in my own personal life, having to heal and guide my children through different areas of life,” says
L-R: Bianca Melchior as the younger version of Fern, with time-travelling granddaughter Kat (Chyler Leigh).
Leigh. “Having Alice know that she is loved beyond circumstance — that it’s unconditional and Kat will always, always fiht to the death for her daughter — it’s the same thing with my daughters. To see that really personified though Kat and Alice brings so much joy in my little mama heart.”
Also bringing joy to Leigh is a time-travel storyline where she is not constantly in peril. This time, Kat travels to the 1920s for a truly Great Gatsby-esque experience. “You get to see Kat actually have moments of laughter and enjoying herself in the past, instead of always crying, running and lurking,” laughs Leigh. “She’s trying to solve mysteries for Elliot, fihting for him to get answers about his mom. And Bianca Melchior, who plays young Fern — I can’t wait for the world to meet her in this role. They’re going to see how young Fern ties to why Grandma Fern is the way that she is later in life.” In terms of how the series wraps up all its intricate storylines, Leigh believes viewers will approve. “I feel like we did as amazing a job as possible to bring closure to several eras,” she says. “Our creators and showrunners managed to do it as seamlessly as possible, and tie everything together in such a beautiful way. But in true Way Home-fashion, we can’t wrap everything up, right? We’ve got to dangle that carrot just a little bit to see if there’s an uprising of Way Homies.”
When it comes to saying goodbye to the time travel portal itself, the actors won’t necessarily miss jumping into the Ontario lake — but that doesn’t mean they didn’t come to appreciate the pond days from a creative standpoint.
“There’s never a scene to be played at the pond that’s casual,” says LaflammSnow. “Pond days are always the scenes that you’ve been waiting for all season – or the whole entire series. I’ll miss that, for sure, because I think on another show, maybe all the locations play in an equally dramatic way, but on our show the pond adds an extra level of crazy. And it’s real adrenaline and excitement, because you actually are going in. We experienced the drama of that moment and that’s a huge gift that I don’t take for granted. I’ll be sad to say goodbye to that.”

Del (Andie MacDowell) and granddaughter Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) have both experienced the time-travelling impact of the mysterious pond.

A LAST WORD THE
QWhat was it about the “long-lost half-sister” dynamic that intrigued you? Suze and Sare didn’t grow up together; they’re strangers when they meet as adults. So, does the fact that they’re related by blood really factor into their bond at all?
A SUSAN: Well, you know, when Sarah and I met over 20 years ago at drama school in London, she was this bright-eyed Canadian and I was this gritty, cynical, bitter, 800-years-of-oppression-on-my-shoulders kind of woman.
We essentially couldn’t be more different.
We were in each other’s classes and we very quickly started to realize that we had this deep, deep, deep connection. Our fist major bonding moment was over a Leonard Cohen song, “Famous Blue Raincoat.” I couldn’t believe that this person with an incredibly sunny disposition got Leonard in the same way that I did.
SARAH: I’m the Canadian, and he’s our patron saint!
SUSAN: He’s your patron saint! We realized we had this connection — not sure, at fist, why. Of course, as we got to know each other, we realized even though we

were raised in very different ways, there was an element of our childhood based in trauma. Trauma and humour connected us. And we were always interested in trying to write a story about these women who were polar opposites, raised across the world from each other, but had this connection.
We started researching and reading about people who’ve been separated at birth or found out later that they were siblings. And there’s this beautiful story about these twins, and the first time they meet, they nap for an entire day together — and it feels like the most natural thing in the world. They’re so comfortable with each other, even though they are actually strangers. So, that’s how the story was born.
SARAH: Yeah, we were always interested in the idea of chosen family, because our chosen family

in our own lives has seen us through so much. And our bond, in many ways, has been as deep or deeper than family. But we added a layer of blood relation — and we’re still honestly exploring the question of, “Does that make things deeper on a cellular level, or is it something else — spiritually or through experience — that really brings these women together?”
And I think in the show it’s kind of both. There is a bond that forms, much to their surprise and maybe in the beginning against their wishes, that this thing is undeniable — the bond that they have and the ways in which they can see and understand each other and help each other grow. We were interested in chosen sisterhood and biological sisterhood — but the question remains, really . . .
But everything we read, people who did find each other later in life, even if they were wildly different . . . I read one story about a Floridian Trump supporter whose brother was a leftwing, East Coast liberal. They couldn’t be more different and they found love in a hopeless place. We were interested in that. What is it? What does bring people together?
QSeason one ended with a distinct lack of resolution. Sare left Ireland, and Suze, behind without a proper goodbye. Speaking as writers, was it always clear where you’d go with a season two?
A SUSAN: Hadn’t a clue! Sarah and I, we were hoping that we would make two
seasons. We really wanted season one to be in Ireland, where Sare’s a fish out of ater, and then season two to move to Canada, so we could see Sare in her world and have Suze and Sheryl [Sophie Thompson] as fish out of ater.
But, you know, life is full of things that are “unresolved.” And if we only made a season one, it was important to us that we did leave it where things weren’t just tied up in a bow and you were left hanging, basically.
SARAH: And season one obviously has the clear drive of they’re looking for their father, and instead find ech other. Season two . . . we wanted to explore life on their own terms, whatever that looks like — that the only path to happiness and health is through living life on their own terms, rather than living life as expected of you.
SUSAN: And it doesn’t have to look a certain way. Because when we meet Sare at the top of the season, obviously very quickly we realize that there’s a crack in the veneer — but on the surface, her life looks much more together than Suze’s. But actually, Suze has agency in her life and is taking the reins and is living more honestly. So, that was also thematically something we were interested in. It doesn’t have to look perfect to be bearable.
Q How different is the xperience of acting in something you’ve also written? Sarah, for you in particular on something like Barry, you were no doubt heavily invested in that character. But do you

feel a more profound investment when you’ve built the show itself from the ground up?
A SARAH: Well, I can tell you it’s a lot more stressful! We both worked as actors for a long time — and what a beautiful and lovely profession . . . when you’re working. You’re entering a story, you have one focal point, one tunnel through that story that you are responsible for. You’re working with a group and building something together, and someone’s telling you where to be . . . sometimes they’re even driving you there! It’s actually a lovely job, as poor as some people try to make it out to be.
Making your own thing from the ground up, it was humbling. We both wanted to write for a long time. When we were at theatre school, we used to write projects together and we both had a passion for it, but it was challenging being out in the world, forging acting careers and hustling a million other jobs to try to sustain ourselves. And so, we really procrastinated. It was in 2016 that we finally sort of . . . e took advice from this Ira Glass quote that was like, “It takes a long time for your talent to match your taste, but it’s not an excuse.” And we thought, “OK, let’s just bash some ideas around.”
At the time, I was doing Barry, and that was such an
MEMORABLE ROLES
B.C. native Sarah Goldberg exploded onto the international stage in 2018, via HBO’s smash-hit hit-man comedy Barry, playing ambitious actress turned criminal conspirator Sally Reed. Sticking with HBO, she recently played calculating portfolio manager Petra Koenig in season three of Industry and, at this very moment, you can see her as JoAnne Felder — ethically compromised therapist to sociopathic tech geniuses on AMC’s The Audacity.
Describing herself as a “gritty Dubliner,” Susan Stanley has spent the bulk of her career in small U.K. theatre and TV gigs. No doubt, SisterS is her breakout project — the realization of a long-shared ambition with Goldberg, whom she met when they both matriculated at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
incredible job. I learned that there are no bad ideas. We used to improvise a lot on that show and we came up with a lot of character stuff as a group. Sometimes you’re throwing out 10 bad ideas before you’re getting to a good one. So, that was very motivating.
But we were equally frustrated that we were getting terrible scripts sent to us with the “worried girlfriend” part. I mean, I have a litmus test: if “I’m so worried about you, babe” is a line in the script, it’s an immediate pass. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come across that line in one form or another. So, [this show] was also a bit born out of frustration and feeling like we have stories to tell, we’re not necessarily seeing those stories fully represented . . .
And it took a long time. It took six years to get the fist season made. Then, when we were actually shooting, it was a real baptism of fie. Suddenly you go from being in charge of one little avenue through a story to being responsible for every decision — down to the colour of a character’s shoes or the angle of the camera . . . and you’re dealing with fies every day that you can’t anticipate.
It was incredible. We were on such a high from it. We learned so much. We had to learn quickly. The thing that was really different about it is you’re asking everyone to be there. You’re throwing the dinner party and you’ve got to make sure there are three courses, that the chicken is cooked and not going to poison anyone. You have to be responsible for everyone’s well-being. It was a big, steep learning curve for us and we loved it, we want to do more. To be the creative outside eye as well as to be inside the story was such a privilege. I think sometimes switching hats really quickly — like when you’re panicking at lunch over losing a location and a budget issue and then suddenly you’re crying about your dead mother in a scene fie minutes later — that was hard, and it was real fl-by-theseat-of-your-pants.
But it was a gift and we’re so grateful for the experience . . . and mostly proud of the fact that we’re still friends at the end of it [laughs].
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
