Eleven years after taking over The Late Show from David Letterman, Stephen Colbert will be saying goodbye to viewers when the last-ever episode airs this Thursday, in the wake of the baffling CBS decisio to cancel the highest-rated show in late night. While Colbert’s future plans have yet to be revealed, the end of The Late Show is also the end of an era, permanently altering the late-night television landscape that’s been in place since the 1950s.

COLBERT’S EXIT MARKS THE END OF AN ERA
Last July, CBS announced plans to shutter The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, in what was then described as a “purely financial decision” amid reports that the show was losing tens of millions each year. That, however, struck many as odd, considering The Late Show is by far the highest-rated of all the network late-night shows. Plus, the timing was suspect, coming days after host Stephen Colbert criticized his network’s parent company, Paramount Global, for settling a US$16-million lawsuit with Donald Trump that cleared the regulatory path for the company’s sale to Skydance CEO David Ellison (which, to quote Colbert, constituted “a big fat bribe”).
Naturally, Trump celebrated the show’s demise. “I absolutely love that Colbert got fied,” he gleefully wrote on social media. “His talent was even less than his ratings.” Vermont’s senator, Bernie Sanders, shared a very different perspective when he referenced the suspicious timing. “Do I think this is a coincidence? NO,” he tweeted. Meanwhile, the Writers Guild of America issued a statement indicating there were “significant oncerns that The Late Show’s cancellation is a bribe, sacrificing fee speech to curry favour with the Trump administration as the company looks for merger approval.”

Regardless of the reason, The Late Show’s cancellation marks an inauspicious end to the late-night franchise that David Letterman introduced more than 30 years ago, while also sending a chill throughout the media landscape.
While Colbert has yet to announce his next move (other than co-writing a new Lord of the Rings movie with his son), it’s a given that we haven’t seen the last of him, and fans will be anxiously awaiting news of his next venture.
When Letterman and Johnny Carson said their respective goodbyes, those final eeks were what NBC used to call “must-see TV.” That promises to be the case with Colbert’s final batch of episodes this week, and while the guest list hadn’t been released at the time this issue went to press, expect Colbert to pull out all the stops for his Late Show farewell.

PLANNING A PARTY
After retiring from MMA in 2016, Ronda Rousey made the leap from actual fighting to faking it as a WWE wrestle. Now, she’s returning to the Octagon for this one-time-only match, streamed live on Netflix. Sh’ll be facing off against fellow retiree Gina Carano, who also got her start in MMA before moving onto acting. After racking up roles in projects including Deadpool and The Mandalorian, Carano was fired from the latter over a social media post comparing the criticism she received for her ultra-conservative political views to the way Jews were treated in Nazi Germany. After being dropped by her talent agency, suing Disney and being blackballed by Hollywood, she’s now returning to her MMA roots.
Meanwhile, Rousey has promised that their showdown will be a brutal one. “Once they close the door,” she warned, “I’m going to do everything in my power to kill that chick with my bare hands, and it’s up to the referee to stop me.”

Hallmark Channel favourite Lacey Chabert returns with a second season of this heartwarming series that honours local heroes by surprising them with a posh party. In this week’s episode, she throws a surprise engagement soiree for Helen Alonzo Hurtado, director of Las Fotos Project, a Los Angeles organization that empowers teen girls of colour through photography.

Like many of his contemporaries, 81-year-old Rod Stewart has refused to let the vagaries of advancing age slow him down. Currently in the midst of a Las Vegas residency, he’ll next be hitting the road for the U.S. leg of his One Last Time tour, set to extend through the summer. This two-hour special is described as a “celebration” that “brings viewers onstage and behind the scenes for an all-access concert experience.” According to the CBS press release, Sir Rod “invites viewers backstage for an intimate interview reflecting on his extraordinary lif, devotion to his family and enduring passion for performing.” In addition to new concert footage, the special also features rare archival footage and an exclusive look behind the scenes.

It’s been a minute since the first season wrapped up in early 2024, but Jason Momoa is finally back with a long-awaited six-episode second season of his reality show in which he travels throughout the U.S. (on his trusty motorcycle, of course) in pursuit of “art, adventure and friendship through the lens of craftsmanship.” This time out, the Aquaman star will introduce viewers to musician Jack Johnson, painter Julian Schnabel and others.

Hulu/Disney+’s post-apocalyptic drama has indeed been renewed for a third season, set to follow former Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) and his fellow survivors after their high-tech bunker melted down, forcing them out into the wasteland above. Expect the show to return in early 2027 — and also expect creator Dan Fogelman et al. to continue their trend of attracting A-listers to join the ensemble. After Big Little Lies’ Shailene Woodley had a beautifully bittersweet arc in season two, ER and The Good Wife Emmy winner Julianna Margulies has signed on for a mystery role in season three.

Somewhat ironically, The Rookie has turned into one of ABC’s longest-tenured dramas ever. And that trend will continue with a recently announced ninth season — which will, indeed, resolve the finale twist tha saw Officers Tim Bradford Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) abducted just after the former proposed to the latter.
A big part of the show’s enduring appeal is, per reports, its unexpected popularity with the teenaged Gen Z crowd, which has turned The Rookie into a hit on not only broadcast TV, but streaming and social media sites like TikTok as well.
This has, in turn, led ABC and creator Alexi Hawley to develop a Washington-set spinoff fo this next TV season titled The Rookie: North, led by Running Point alum Jay Ellis. The synopsis reads: “Alex Holland believed his mid-life wasn’t worthy of a crisis. But after a violent home invasion ignites a dormant purpose, Alex battles a lifetime of failed commitments by joining the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie. Policing from the urban coast to the rural forest where backup isn’t just five minute away, Alex must prove to his skeptical training offic, his fellow rookies and himself that he’s finally found somethin worthy of the fight”

Lights Out for The Night Agent?

The hit FBI thriller will return for a fourth season sometime in late 2026 or early 2027. Alas, that fourth season will also be its last, as the saga of Night Action
I watch a lot of MeTV, because it takes me back to my youth. Adam-12 continues to intrigue me even though the shows are decades old. I wonder just how accurately they depict the times.

NBC’s Adam-12 aired for seven successful seasons, from 1968 to 1975, each week covering a shift in the lives of LAPD Officersete Malloy (Martin Milner) and Jim Reed (Kent McCord). Because the show’s co-creator and producer was Jack Webb (Dragnet) — a renowned stickler for authenticity — the situations, dialogue and procedures were all as accurate as a day in a reallife patrol car.
In fact, so realistic were the scripts that Adam-12 episodes were used for many years at police academies to help train new officers. The attention to deta was truly impressive. Case in point: the closing credits invariably mentioned the name Shaaron Claridge, whose voice was heard in 166 of the show’s 174
operative Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) wraps up with one last, nation-shaking conspiracy.
Helmed by The Shield creator Shawn Ryan based on a 2019 novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent has been one of Netflixs moststreamed series since its debut in 2023. Now, Ryan et al. get to wrap up the pulsepounding saga on their own terms.
As the showrunner put it in an official statement: “I’ so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The
episodes. Claridge was a real-life LAPD dispatcher and it was Jack Webb’s contention that using her to deliver the calls would add yet another dimension of reality. You can hear her over the opening credits in every episode when she says, “1-Adam-12, possible 459 with chains and knives.” The dispatch numbers are completely accurate throughout, so ardent viewers came to know that a “211 in progress” was an armed robbery, a Code 3 was “urgent with lights and siren” and Code 7 was, of course, a lunch break.
Trivia buffs may note that th personal car of Officereed (McCord) was a blue Corvette — the same model onscreen partner Martin Milner drove in his other hit series, CBS’s Route 66
Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season t our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
Plot details for this swan song are still very much under wraps, but we do know that a few heavy hitters are set to join the ensemble.
Chief among them is Bosch’s Titus Welliver, whom Deadline reports will play Duval, a special prosecutor for the Department of Justice
who is tasked with looking into the shady Night Action program. You can also expect to see all-grown-up Little Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin as Cahlin, a young fed working on Duval’s task force; Midnight Mass’ Annabeth Gish as a more senior member of that same task force; Moonlight breakout Trevante Rhodes as Dom, Peter’s new partner; Sinners’ Li Jun Li as Dom’s wife, Mel; The Offi ’s David Denman as Ford, a grizzled CIA agent; and You’s Elizabeth Lail as Peter’s long-lost ex-fiancé, Zoe.

Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers lend their producing cred to another off beat sci-fi horor series. And even though this one’s set modern-day, it also very much taps into a genre classic from the ’80s: Cocoon.

Alfred Molina plays Sam, a curmudgeonly widower reluctantly shuffled into retirement community. The plan was to settle down in this idyllic New Mexico ’burgh with his beloved wife Lilly (Malcolm in the Middle’s Jane Kaczmarek) — but after a stroke cruelly robs Sam of his true love, he doesn’t have much to look forward to in the twilight of life.
Determined to be miserable, our protagonist nonetheless finds some kindred spirits amongst the other residents, played by the A-list likes of Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, Geena Davis and Bill Pullman. Alas, beneath its charming veneer, there’s something rotten in The Boroughs, as dark forces

Teasing the series in a chat with Tudum, producers Matt and Ross Duffer said: “While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny and deeply touching.”
Creators Will Matthews and Jeffry Addiss add: “From the beginning, we knew we wanted The Boroughs to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting and emotional. The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once.”

JACK IN ACTION!
Prime Video subscribers spent four seasons unravelling geopolitical conspiracies alongside CIA analyst Jack Ryan. Based on the novels of Tom Clancy, Ryan had previously been played on the big screen by a James Bond-esque cavalcade of movie stars, including Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Afflec and Chris Pine. But for the brainy, morally stalwart hero’s first turn on the small screen, producers turned to John Krasinski — up till then best known as floppy-haired goofball heartthrob Ji on The Offi . His everyman charm proved a perfect fit for the iconic character, in a long-form exploration of Ryan that allowed showrunners Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland to go deeper than any filmmaers previously had with Ryan and fan-fave Clancy spooks like Jim Greer (Wendell Pierce), Mike November (Michael Kelly) and Ding Chavez (Michael Peña). Though the series itself is at an end, Krasinski’s take on Ryan continues in a Prime original film subtitle Ghost War Per the synopsis: “Jack Ryan is reluctantly thrust back into the world of espionage when an international covert mission unravels a deadly conspiracy, forcing him to confront a rogue black-ops unit . . . and the clock is ticking.” Greer and November are also back in the mix — joined this time by Emma Marlowe, a “razor-sharp MI6 officer” played b American Sniper alum Sienna Miller. All told, “Jack and the team navigate a treacherous web of betrayal, facing a past they thought was long put to rest — making this the most personal, high-stakes mission any of them have ever faced.”

Following in the footsteps of Lucy Lawless à la My Life Is Murder, Brooke Shields heads to Acorn TV for a cozy mystery of her own.
The erstwhile Blue Lagoon and Suddenly Susan star plays Allie Chandler, a bestselling mystery novelist who puts her expertise in fictional crime to work in the real world after a friend is murdered. Along the way, she picks up an unlikely partner in the form of young podcaster and aspiring writer Andi Walker (Amalia Williamson). Also in the mix is Canadian Tom Cavanagh (late of The Flash) playing the love interest of the piece, Detective Jack Kerrigan. Shields developed the show alongside her frequent collaborator Robin Bernheim, with
whom she recently worked on Netflix om-com Mother of the Bride. As the actress told World Screen: “We started brainstorming and developing the idea of a generational divide [between a woman] my age and a young girl, each bringing different types of expertise and knowledge to the other. That dynamic, mixed with a little heat and a bit of the odd couple, can be mined for a great deal of humour and really touching moments.” Shields furthermore mused: “What happens when you age out of something that you were an expert in? How do you adapt? Do you just give up and say, ‘This is too young a world for me,’ or do you say, ‘OK, I’ll try to learn from it and modernize, without trying to be part of the younger generation?’ ”

RETURN OF THE KING
Since its debut way back in 1975, Saturday Night Live has been an incubator for some of the most brilliant comedic minds of all time. One of the true greats to emerge from those hallowed halls of 30 Rockefeller Center is, undeniably, Will Ferrell. Anchoring the venerable sketch show for seven seasons, from 1995 to 2002, Ferrell showcased a peerless, fearless commitment to his absurd characters — including the likes of President George W. Bush, iconic Chicago Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray and boozy crooner Robert Goulet (portrayed in the picture above).
After leaving the show, he shot to big-screen stardom with hits like Elf, Anchorman and Step Brothers. That said, like many former cast members before him, the California native has returned to 30 Rock multiple times as host. His last stint came in 2019, when he joined the vaunted Five-Timers Club. This week, he’s back for a sixth, emceeing SNL’s 51st season final. Joining him is a musical guest of equal esteem: Paul McCartney, back for a fifth performance in Studio 8H.

For eight wondrous seasons, creators Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett used their edgy cartoon Big Mouth to goofily et thoughtfully explore the ups and downs of a group of teens and the “Hormone Monsters” ruling their lives.
The show ended in 2025, but Kroll et al. aren’t missing a beat — unleashing more animated absurdity in a new series called Mating Season . It’s described by Netflix as “an adult animated romantic comedy — set in the animal world — about love, sex, relationships and the universal need to find a partner and perpetuate the species — starring bears, raccoons, deer, foxes and a host of other horny, lovable forest critters.”

So, at this point in my life, being a “Friend of” on the show is just a great way for me to stay connected to the ladies, and to just continue to share a little bit of my story.
For the old-school Housewives fans, it’s really great when you see some of the ladies that started season one, season two, season three — which is the season that I came on — still integrate themselves in with the cast.
I think season 17 is particularly exciting because we have new blood, but we have some of the old blood as well. So, yes, I love the Friend space at this point in my life. I can’t say that I would ever not want to be a Housewife again, but it’s working for me right now.

Do you feel a little bit like a “special guest star”? Like when George Clooney would come back to ER for an episode?
A A little bit. You know, it’s interesting because as a “Friend of,” I usually don’t get pulled into the mess too much. But I’m always in the middle of it, in a way. I don’t shoot with the ladies all the time, but I’m around a lot this
season. So, I’m getting updated when I come to the scene. Like, I’ll be gone for two days, and of course all hell has broken loose. So, I’m always getting updated. I feel like I’m a little bit of the narrator of the show. I’m always explaining in the interviews and stuff hat is happening. It’s almost like watching it with you guys, in a way. I dip out and I come back in and I’m like, “What happened!?” And then I explain what has happened while I was gone.
So yeah, it is kind of like a guest appearance — but I’m not off-limits. And you’ll see that in season 17. At fist, when I started to hang out with the ladies in the “Friend” space, I thought, “OK, this is their stuff and Im going to be kind of in it, but not really in it.” But I will say this season, I definitely ot caught up a little bit — and you’ll see how that all plays out in the next few episodes. I had to activate a little 50 Cynt [her edgy rapper alter ego].
QThat’s interesting, because the press materials refer to you as the “calm in the storm” for this group. But you’re saying you do get caught up in that storm yourself?
A I choose peace and I’ve always been the voice of reason on the show. However, if you want the smoke, then you get the smoke. I don’t go in looking for the smoke, or trying to get smoke from anyone. If the smoke comes to me, then it is what it is. But I always choose peace until I can.

international co-productions are all the rage these days in the TV biz, and the CBC has just announced a doozy: Committed, an upcoming new comedy series being produced in conjunction with BBC Northern Ireland, set to feature a mix of Canadian and Irish talent.
“Committed is a romantic comedy about what happens in a relationship after the grand gesture, when real life barges in,” describes the synopsis. “At its core, the series explores what it means to step outside your comfort zone — and how people who are very different from you can make life far more interesting than you planned.”
Pluck of the Irish
The story surrounds Canadian Peter Hooley (Dustin Milligan, Schitt’s Creek), a recently divorced accountant who falls head over heels for Northern Ireland woman Julie Johnston (Diona Doherty, Derry Girls) after spending a whirlwind weekend together in Toronto. Lovestruck Peter crosses the Atlantic to declare his everlasting love — only to discover he’s landed in an old-fashioned and wildly eccentric rural Northern Ireland village that’s
unlike anything that he ever could have imagined.
“Committed offers a classic fishout-of-water comedy intertwined with a unique love story that follows the all too human aftermath of a grand romantic gesture, rather than the build-up to it,” says Sally Catto, CBC’s general manager, programming. “We know the show will connect with audiences in Canada and around the world thanks to its heart and authenticity, and are excited to be partnering with BBC Northern Ireland alongside the outstanding teams at Cameron Pictures and Fabel Productions.”

MORE CANNES CASTING
Production is officially underway on the fourt season of HBO mega-hit The White Lotus, with filming taking place in aris and the French Riviera. “The fourth season will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival,” reads the upcoming season’s synopsis, which also reveals that famed hotel Airelles Château de la Messardière will double for the White Lotus du Cap, while Hôtel Martinez will fill in as the White otus Cannes. To capture the level of authenticity fans have come to expect, series creator Mike White will be filming scenes at Cannes during this year’s festival, which takes place from May 12 until May 23.
Meanwhile, it’s also been revealed that six new actors have been cast in the upcoming season: Heather Graham, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnetzer, Tobias Santelmann, Frida Gustavsson and Laura Smet. They join previously announced cast members Sandra Bernhard, Vincent Cassel, Steve

Coogan and Kumail Nanjiani. As usual, information about their characters is being kept top secret. What hasn’t been so secret is news that previously cast Helena Bonham Carter parted ways with the series just days after production began. Details about the circumstances behind her exit are murky, and weren’t made any clearer when an HBO spokesperson told Variety, “With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.
Shortly after that announcement came news that Laura Dern had joined the series. According to sources, Dern won’t be taking over the role Bonham Carter was set to play, but will instead be playing a whole new character developed by White. This marks a reunion for White and Dern, who worked together previously when she starred in two seasons of his acclaimed HBO dramedy Enlightened.
Kim Kardashian has been increasingly expanding her horizons, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, and her latest project bolsters her roster of producing credits. Having recently made her debut as a Broadway producer with Fear 13, she’s just partnered with Paramount+ to produce a new reality series for the streamer.
The upcoming series will be produced by ITV America (the same company that brings us Love Island USA), along with Kim Kardashian Productions and Paramount Sports Entertainment. Titled Team Moms, the new reality show will bring viewers inside the hugely competitive world of youth baseball, capturing the day-to-day lives of coaches, founders, families and the
talented teenage athletes as they take part in a high-stakes training program at Legendary Prep Academy in Scottsdale, Arizona.
“At its core, the show is about parents who push their kids toward the next level of the sport,” the series’ official loglinexplains. “You’ll see the highs and lows as talented teens work to make the college team of their dreams, and how their families’ involvement affects their relationships and their athletic journey. With Division 1 college scholarships, NIL deals and potential MLB careers on the line, these parents will do whatever it takes to see their kids make it in the big leagues.”

IDOW’S BAY, the small New England town plagued by a supernatural curse, has lived inside its creator Katie Dippold for a long time. The origins of the comedic horror series date back to 2009, when Dippold was hired as a writer on Parks and Recreation, based on a script that she wrote about the haunted island. “[Parks and Rec creator] Mike Schur hired me off of it” says Dippold. “It was pretty different then — more jokefocused — and now it’s more grounded and more focused on tension and the characters. But it’s something I just kept thinking about over the years.”
As a fan of Jaws and the works of Stephen King, Dippold had long wanted to create a similar small-town environment that she could will into existence. “About fie years ago or so, I went to Marblehead, Massachusetts, and there was this great diner called
‘‘ I too am a child of the ’80s and I’d grown up with things like The Wicker Man and Jaws . This was kind of everything I’d always thought I would never get to do, and it became a true dream job.”
the Driftwood. It was really cozy and lived in, and it felt like a Stephen Kinglike atmosphere. I never wanted to leave,” she says. “I wanted that world to exist. I wanted to believe that there could be an island town off of ew England that you could go to where weird things happen that make you raise a lot of questions. What’s the story of the inn? Why has that house been boarded up for 40 years?”
In Widow’s Bay we meet Tom Loftis, the town mayor played by Matthew Rhys, who thinks all the superstition is nonsense. “He’s really defiant in trying to bring tourism to this island town, but he’s also repressing a lot and there’s things he has to come to terms with,” says Dippold. “He’s the mayor, but the locals don’t trust him. They don’t believe he’s up to the job. They don’t think he’s strong enough. I think he wants their respect, even though he would never admit it. And then the town, it feels like it’s dying and he wants to bring life to it and the

locals are telling him it’s haunted. But the stuff thy’re saying just sounds too ludicrous to believe, so it’s easy for him to dismiss it. He’s hellbent on making this happen and he’s incorrect to do that.”
Rhys had not been top of mind for the series creator, when casting the role of Tom. “I honestly did not see it at fist. I am a huge fan, and I believe he’s one of the best actors of all time. I think this man can do anything. But I didn’t think of him as a funny person. And then we Zoomed with him and he was just so funny and lovely, and he completely got the show,” says Dippold. “Now I can’t imagine anyone else doing it.” Dippold wasn’t the only one that found the match a surprise. “I’d certainly never read anything like it. I too am a child of the ’80s and I’d grown up with things like The Wicker Man and Jaws,” says Rhys, best known for his Emmywinning role on The Americans and the recent crime thriller The Beast in Me. “This was kind of everything I’d

always thought I would never get to do, and it became a true dream job.” Dippold always knew it would require a specific kind of talent to translate the tone of her show to screen. “Because I’m a massive horror fan, I feel like if that part was being taken seriously, I would not watch the show,” she says. “I want to believe these people are real and I never want it to feel like a parody. And I never want it to feel corny.” Saying that, the show has a lot of humor, sometimes when you least expect it. To walk that tonal tightrope, Dippold hired Hiro Murai, the director of Atlanta and The Bear. “He’s so good with little nuances and small little moments,” she says. “And I never have to worry about something feeling corny with him. He brings laser-sharp focus on specifics and making it eel real but still finding the surprise in moments. And we talked at such great lengths about what worked. It was a constant process of molding the show from the beginning to end.”
Murai saw the project as a unique challenge. “I’ve never read something with so much hard comedy in it and truly terrifying horror, while trying to be honest about the emotional lives of these characters. It felt like we’re just hanging on to two sled dogs at the same time,” he says. His other challenge was to make Widow’s Bay feel both nostalgic and current at the same time. “It feels like your memory of seeing a scary ’80s movie. The challenge was, how do you take that feeling and then literalize it?” he muses. “And the island itself, it’s removed from civilization so everything’s a little bit anachronistic and their technology is old and there’s something about it that feels removed from our time. There was something really exciting about creating this place, trying to make it as real, tangible and lived in as possible.”
For the scribe who honed her skills on the 23-minute sitcom before moving into feature film, being able to ceate something entirely without guardrails
has been a dream. “This was the most creative experience of my life,” says Dippold. “Even in the pitch to Apple, you’re supposed to have an ’Oh, this show is just like this other successful show.’ And I was really banging my head against the wall trying to think of anything, but nothing felt right because I knew it wouldn’t be like any of those shows. So, instead, I just doubled down on the opposite. It was like a salesman: ‘This is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.’” Similarly, the writing process felt like nothing Dippold had experienced before. “In the room, there were no real rules. It was really coming from a place of, ‘What do we want to see next? How do we feel about this moment and what would that character do?” It made it so rewarding,” she says. “And I always hope for this feeling where an episode starts, where you don’t know if it’s going to be scarier or if it’s going to be funnier, because we really were just following our instincts. I think that makes it an interesting watch.”

With both shows ending their seasons this week (the fourth for Fire Country, the fist for its spinoff ), CBS is already hard at work developing another potential entry into the franchise, which would focus on an Edgewater medical team (the title Med Country is already being thrown around).
“I think Max and I are going to start a little Sleep Country pretty soon,” says Baccarin, joking about long days on the set of both series, particularly when shooting a two-part crossover episode that aired in April. “We’ve been talking about Vacation Country for a while,” adds Thieriot before jokingly suggesting another spinoff:

The fact that both shows have become successful enough to warrant another potential spinoff speaks to how much viewers have connected with the characters. According to Baccarin, it all boils down to one word: family. “It originates with that, and strong emotional arcs, and people’s connectivity to each other, whether it’s fiefihters or, you know, sheriffs, or cops or whatever it is. We’re all relating to each other as a family,” she says, while also pointing to the procedural elements that are an integral part of both shows. “It’s like the excitement of solving the crime, of putting out the fie, of dealing with whatever we’re dealing with, plus the emotional arcs that connects these characters.”
Airing in early April, the two-part crossover centred on a school bus explosion, bringing together the respective teams on both shows. As Thieriot points out, those episodes were a labour of love for everyone

involved. “Obviously, it was a huge amount of work for all the actors and the crew to pull off,” he says. “Like, that doesn’t fall short, I think, on anybody. But I can say that the finished poduct is pretty amazing.”
Both shows lean heavily into action, and nowhere was that more true than a recent Sheriff Countr episode that saw Mickey and her officers under siege when the Barlow crime family attacked Edgewater station, resulting in a massive shoot-out.
“It took a lot of prep, actually,” Baccarin says of the vast amount of effort required for that episode. “The initial prep in the beginning of the season to figue out all of our guns and things. And then, this episode we had to brush up, because there were so many things I learned about other weapons: shotguns and flashgrenades and whatnot. So, that was one component to it. And it was a very carefully choreographed staged area. We had to make sure that with every stunt and everything that we did we were progressing the story, because we had to tell a very consistent story of being under siege, running out of ammo and having no radio connectivity to the outside world. So, it was really about pinpointing those moments physically in action and then emotionally layering in, you know, at what point is the breaking
point? . . . I had to be very specific of the emotional beats and moments and also physically knowing, ‘OK, this is the section where I have two shells left in my shotgun. Am I going to use it for this guy or that guy, and how am I going to get backup?’”
According to Baccarin, that ambitious action sequence took fie solid days of shooting, requiring her to spend all that time “hunkered down behind desks and stuff in one spot, one position. My knees really took a beating on those fie days.”
A big thing that I’ve always said from the beginning is people want to go to work and go home and be able to smile at the end of the day. And if you can do that, it just changes the whole tone and the work ethic, I think.”
However, that’s a small price to pay for the spectacle that wound up on the screen. For Thieriot, that commitment is even more intense, given that he’s not only the star of Fire Country, but is also an executive producer on both shows. “I won’t lie, it ends up being a heck of a lot,” he admits. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way, you know? And honestly, we have such a great team over there and clearly it starts at the top. And Morena is an incredible leader and just an amazing partner onscreen for all of her co-stars, and I know the crew adores her. And so, I think that it really kind of starts there, right? I mean, people will bust their a** for you if you show them that you’re going to bust your a** and you’re going to be there every day and you care about them. And a big thing that I’ve always said from the beginning is people want to go to work and go home and be able to smile at the end of the day. And if you can do that, it just changes the whole tone and the work ethic, I think.”

BABY REINDEER’S RICHARD GADD REDEFINES MASC
HEN RICHARD GADD’S NEW show fist entered the consciousness of those who had previously devoured his Emmy-winning drama series Baby Reindeer, an early press release promised it would get to the bottom of what it meant to be a man. “It’s out there and you’re like, ‘What has this promised people?’ It was never my intention to set out to answer any questions,” says the Scottish creator of now two series that delve into male trauma. “It was an exploration and I think the more I dug deep in it, the more I realized just how complicated and contradicting everything it was. I don’t write to find solutions o

answers or try to build a series to a moral point that people can take away. I took two characters I really cared about and tried to understand them. At the end of it all, I just thought that they’d lived, in a lot of ways, a great tragedy.”
Half Man stars Gadd and Jamie Bell as stepbrothers Ruben and Niall, who form a relationship in their youth that is as toxic as it is codependent. In their teenage years, the roles are played by Stuart Campbell, as young Ruben, and Mitchell Robertson, as young Niall. Early on, Ruben returns from a juvenile detention
facility, and while Niall is terrified of his mother’s partner’s son, he comes to enjoy the protection that having a violent brother affords him. That dysfunctional dynamic carries them well into their adulthood.
“You take two men that are kind of broken in their adult life and you go back to their childhood, in a more unaccepting time of U.K. society, and show all that learned behaviour and repression that they soak up and the trauma that they experience,” says Gadd. “You contextualize the adults and how they’ve got to this point of broken masculinity in the present.”
As Gadd moved between decades and tonal shifts in his scripts, executive producer Sophie Gardiner saw the epic potential of a very intimate story. “The thing that really interested me most about the piece is the ‘why’ people behave the way they do: the complicated interaction of what’s happened to them, their families, who they are,” she says. “To explore that with the forensic precision that Richard does
with his characters, you need scale. It’s about how what happens in the past impacts upon the present. In terms of the tone, that’s just the way Richard writes and sees the world. It’s huge. It’s epic. It’s small, imperfect. It really is everything. And that makes
it utterly distinctive, but also true to lives lived.”
To portray the younger versions of Bell and Gadd, Robertson and Campbell relied more on director Alexandra Brodski than their counterparts. “We didn’t want

[episodes] four, fie and sixth to influene the guys. They go through a phenomenal change during the series,” says Gadd. “The Niall and Ruben we meet later on in the series aren’t the ones that we grow up with, in that respect. So, we wanted them to stay close to the instincts that they captured in their auditions. What I loved about these two actors was that they brought such vivacious youth to things. If you know how corruptible adults can be, would you lose a bit of that youth?”
Instead of adopting Bell and Gadd’s mannerisms, the two young actors worked on maintaining their characters’ connection to each other, despite the horrors they experience onscreen. “The darkness, the hostility, the rage — speaking from Ruben’s perspective — is there on the page. It was there from the fist reading,” says Campbell. “But we did work, in the rehearsal process and on set, to make sure that we kept the lightness, making sure that we continued to see this unspoken connection between us. I think it helps that we are really close anyway. I don’t know what it would have been like if we didn’t like each other.”
It was in the auditions of Campbell and Robertson that Gadd saw the potential of what the characters could be, once fully realized. “They offered such a window into the soul of the characters,” he says. “A lot of people thought, ‘If Ruben’s the epitome of masculinity, I’m going to have to shout every line, I’m going to puff y chest,’ but really, Ruben is vulnerable in his own way as well, and that’s what Stuart captured in spades,” says Gadd. “And a lot of people played Niall kind of meek, but he’s a guy shufflin through his own internal conflicts, and I thought Mitchell did that so beautifully.” To guide them through the process, Gadd was present on set, in his capacity as executive producer. “There was a constant conversation
happening,” says Campbell. “But to Richard’s credit, he said really early on that he didn’t want to inhibit my performance or take away any sort of spontaneity that we could find on the dy, truthfully or organically.”
Despite being known for material that evokes strong reactions, the multihyphenate says he spends little time thinking about the outcome of his work.

“If I spent my life worried about how people will respond to things, then you’re not going to ever write good art,” he says. “If you really hone down into writers’ motivations, usually they’re very inspired either by what’s going on with other people and how they want people to react. Other people want to set out to say something, and therefore the piece devolves into almost a moral tale which is too blatant to the viewer. All I really sit down every day to do is write the best possible story.” Gadd is also not a fan of gratuitous sex or violence. “Every time you see violence, or something challenging within the show, it leads to plot development, or character psychology going deeper and I think it’s completely justified” he says. “But in a show where you explore the extremities of male violence, you have to show how extreme that can go. Otherwise, you’re robbing the
audience of the truth of this big theme that we’re grappling with right now as a society.”
For Gadd, there is no specifi message he wants viewers to take away from the drama — he’d prefer they make up their own minds. “I never want to patronize my audience,” he says. “There’s a wrongful opinion that in order to keep the most viewers, you have to appeal to the most people and broaden things out and explain things as much as possible. I think if Baby Reindeer and Adolescence has proved anything, it’s that we like to be challenged and we like to face our own demons and see it back on television. I think as an art form that’s probably the most watched in the world, we should be at the tip-o-sphere of conversation and change. I always want to give my audiences credit where credit’s due, and I think people are a lot more clever than we give them credit for.”

In this indie drama, married couple Erin (Katie Aselton, who also directed) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs) take an intense emotional journey to Joshua Tree, California, where they attempt to navigate an unexpected and particularly challenging new phase in their relationship. Everybody Loves Raymond alum Brad Garrett displays surprisingly solid dramatic chops as the old friend who lends them his place, while Susan Sullivan plays Erin’s mother.

Q Congratulations on the show. What’s it been like delving into another long-term gig like this?
A It’s a dream. I pinch myself every day. Some days I go to work and I’m like, “Is this real? I get to do this?” It’s the most incredible job.
Q And then some days you’re like, “Is this Boston? Oh wait, no, it’s Toronto.” I am kind of dreaming.
A [Laughs] I definitely elt that this winter! Everyone was like, “Toronto winter is rough.” And then this winter happened and they were like, “OK, it’s not usually this rough.”
I mean, I love it because I’m in L.A. and I never get to really experience that, but it was next-level cold in Toronto this year. But I love Toronto, and I love filming thee. I love our crew.
But it is funny, because sometimes we’ll be on the streets of Toronto, but there’ll be all these Boston police cars everywhere and it’ll be Boston Police “Don’t Cross” [signs],

and people are so confused. There was one time I was in my uniform and I had to walk from set back to where our little green room was, and a couple people on the street were like, “Thank you for your service. And also, Officer, there was a guy . . .” I was like, “No, no, no. It’s fake. I’m on a television show.” But they thought I was a real cop, which made me feel good.
Q Well, if you wanted to avoid the weather, you should’ve just come back out here to B.C., your old Psych stomping grounds. We barely had a single flae of snow this winter . . .
A Are you in B.C.!? Where?

and White Rock. You filmed a fai bit in White Rock, right?
A Our stages were in North Van, but we filmedin Burnaby and we were out in White Rock a lot. I mean, we filmed all ver Vancouver. That’s so wild! I miss Vancouver.
Q Picking up on that, you shot Psych, which was set in Southern California, out here in British Columbia. Now you’re shooting Boston Blue in Toronto. It really is remarkable how easily one city can double for another . . .

A There were days [on Psych] that, by truck, we were bringing palm trees to Vancouver because it had to be Santa Barbara. It was so funny because I remember when I fist heard we were shooting in Vancouver for Santa Barbara, I was like, “How? It’s raining all the time. Santa Barbara’s sunny.” And it’s amazing what they can do. It was, like, a couple establishing shots [filmed in the eal Santa Barbara], truck in some palm trees and there you have it!
Q The cop drama is an especially well-worn genre. What is it about Boston Blue that stands out for you?
A We were lucky to follow in the footsteps and have Blue Bloods established — you know, bringing over the legacy themes, but also establishing a new identity and having the audience come with us.

And having this dinner [scene] every week is a side to law enforcement shows, and law enforcement in general, that we don’t get to see. So, again, coming from that sort of Blue Bloods family — that table to our table — and then having this extended family while also including that family, we were really lucky to be able to honour that, and then also have this new identity.
I think that is what sets us apart. There is a lot of heart. Like, come have dinner with us every week — walking not just through the cases with us, but watching this family dynamic. There’s a lot that people can relate to and follow and feel and think and reflect. I lie what we do every week. I hope the audience feels that way, too.
QHow exactly does Sarah fit into — or fail to fit into — this sprawling famil of cops?
A I think it’s hard being in the position that she’s in of “the boss.” Where it can get really uncomfortable, where it can get complicated is having to make decisions . . . even in the pilot,
CURRENT GIG
A spinoff of CBSs long-running Blue Bloods, Boston Blue hit the TV beat this past fall, following the original series’ Det. Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) from New York to Beantown, where he becomes immersed in another unruly family of cops. One of those esteemed officers is Sara Silver (Maggie Lawson), Boston PD’s superintendent of detectives — who balances her stalwart devotion to the job with the inevitable complications of sharing a badge with her literal brothers and sisters in blue.
Lena [Sonequa Martin-Green] wants a promotion, it’s not really her turn yet; of course I would wanna give it to her, but I can’t because there’s somebody who actually deserves it more, for the time they’ve put in . . .
I do sometimes think with Sarah, there is . . . not a “stoic” [quality] — there’s obviously emotion behind it — but she can’t often show that emotion at work. She has to be a boss who has to keep a lot together. And sometimes the shift-off fom that [is a struggle].
I do think she and Lena, that is a very quick shift. I think the sister bond removes Sarah’s boss mask for a minute and she can step into that a little bit easier with her. I also think that Phoebe [Sarah’s stepdaughter, played by Matia Jackett] now coming into the mix has created also a new dynamic where Sarah has been able to kind of process and deal with her day, her emotions on her own. There are now eyes on her — a 14- or 15-year-old who has eyes on her.
So, the hardest part for her is almost a thawing out from work, having to kind of sink back into being the emotional version of her, because she has to keep a certain kind of face to be a boss.
And I actually love seeing how we’re playing that out. Going to work as a boss and then coming home and being a

This isn’t the first time you’ve seen Maggie awson sporting a badge and gun. From 2006 to 2014, the Kentucky gal spent eight seasons playing Santa Barbara detective Juliet “Jules” O’Hara on USA Network’s breezy, B.C.-shot cop dramedy Psych, partnered up with fake psychic/real con man Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez). It’s a role she’s since reprised for three TV movies (and counting!).
Over the years, Ms. Lawson has also guested prominently on such series as Justifie , Two and a Half Men, The Ranch, Lethal Weapon, The Great Indoors and Santa Clarita Diet, while leading the casts of quirky comedies Angel From Hell and Outmatched.
partner, sister, stepmom . . . I think Sarah is having to learn a lot about herself in that way, on an emotional level, of how she balances the emotions after work.
She’s got the work part down. It’s the other that she can struggle with a little bit.
QI’ve heard actors talk about playing cops, and how they didn’t really know if they were going to be able to pull it off — until they put on the uniform and the gun belt, and then that just instantly changed the way they carried themselves, the way they moved through the world. Was it like that at all for you?
AThat is so crazy! I have said that a couple times today [about the uniform] when people say, “What makes you feel the most like Sarah?” It’s wild that you just said that. I’m experiencing that.
That, for me, was really unexpected. I didn’t anticipate that. It was more like a thing that happened once I got to set and I learned I would be wearing my uniform almost all the time — which not all superintendents do; the superintendent in Boston does. When I put that uniform on, when you put the belt on, when you put the boots on, there is something that happens. You do transform a little bit.
And it is the way you hold yourself, yes, but I think you naturally feel like, “Oh, this is to be honoured. I am now representing this [job] in a certain way.”
It’s funny, I actually visited our writers’ room here in L.A. yesterday and they were asking, “What was one of the things you really loved about the season?” And I’m like, “That uniform.” It is Sarah. That is when I feel something happens. I don’t even have the language for it. But that was unexpected, and really powerful. And it is my favourite part of the day. That’s when I feel complete.
You go through hair, you go through makeup, I put that uniform on and we’re in.
