PELLEY OUSTED AFTER 60 MINUTES CLASH
In the wake of Paramount’s merger with Skydance Media (owned by David Ellison, son of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison), CBS has been in turmoil, from the shady cancellation of The Late Show to the dumbed-down, right-leaning shift in The CBS Evening News. Now, the Ellisons’ hand-picked head of CBS News, conservative op-ed writer Bari Weiss, is taking a wrecking ball to 60 Minutes Launched in 1968, 60 Minutes is like no other show on television. The jewel in the crown of broadcast journalism, 60 Minutes is a ratings juggernaut that brings in US$70M per year in ad revenue. Meanwhile, viewership increased by nine per cent this year, an anomaly as linear television ratings decline. And when tallying up its audience on other platforms — including streaming, social media, etc. — 60 Minutes amassed 2.5 billion views last season. “That’s a third of humanity,” veteran correspondent Scott Pelley observed in an interview with The New York Times.
Yet Weiss appears determined to break what doesn’t need fixin. The day after the show won two Emmys, she fied exec producer Tanya Simon, plus correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega (Anderson Cooper was already gone, having quit a few weeks earlier). In a statement, Vega accused Weiss of trying to impose “censorship,” alleging “efforts to insert political bias into our stories.”
60 Minutes

Weiss replaced Simon with tech journalist Nick Bilton — who, like Weiss, has zero experience in TV news. His fist meeting with 60 Minutes staffers turned disastrous when his claim that Weiss “loved” the show was challenged by Pelley. “She is murdering 60 Minutes. She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it, and she’s been doing exactly that,” Pelley fied back, telling Bilton both he and Weiss were woefully underqualified or their jobs. Pelley, a 37-year veteran of CBS News, was fied the next day.
But why dismantle a still-successful TV institution? Pelley believes Weiss is intent on hobbling the show so the Ellisons can “curry a moment of favour with the Trump administration.”
Former 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft, who retired in 2019, offered a blunt assessment of Weiss. “Everything she’s touched has turned to s***,” he told Variety. “Everything she’s touched has gone colossally wrong . . . She’s only fulfilling other peopl’s agendas.”

Forced to “regenerate” yet again, iconic U.K. sci-fi franchise Doctor Who is in search of both a new North American distributor and a new creative direction.

It’s been a full year since Ncuti Gatwa wrapped his second and final season as the two-hearted alien adventurer b regenerating into a very familiar face: OG Companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). (Plus, we got a cameo from Gatwa’s predecessor Whittaker!) That oh-so-intriguing cliffhanger was supposed to be resolved in the show’s next Christmas special. Alas, the BBC has just announced there will be no special at all this year. What’s more, showrunner Russell T. Davies has parted ways with the franchise, leaving its future creative direction up in the air. The move comes after international distributor Disney+ also bowed out of its pact with BBC, amidst high production costs and lower-than-expected viewership. All of which is to say, we haven’t the foggiest when or where the good Doctor will return, nor what he/she will look like.

Indeed, Netflixs three-part docuseries chronicling the backstage debacles of America’s Next Top Model caused quite a stir when it premiered this past February, with allegations of workplace toxicity and sexual assault during the catwalk competition’s 2003 to 2018 run.
And the scandal just keeps on escalating, as even though creator/host Tyra Banks participated in the doc, she is now suing Netflix. er The Hollywood Reporter, in a case brought before the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Banks’ lawyers allege that, of her three-and-ahalf-hour chat with filmmaers, only 16 minutes were used, and her comments were “stripped of context and reassembled to support a false and defamatory narrative unrelated to what she actually expressed.”
The suit furthermore asserts that “the false narrative the producers constructed — through selective editing, deliberate omission and surgical manipulation of continuous footage — included that Ms. Banks knowingly allowed a contestant to be sexually assaulted on her show, exploited that contestant’s trauma for ratings and then could not even remember it when asked. That narrative about Ms. Banks is a complete fabrication — one that Netflix streamed to a globa audience of millions.”

I loved private eye shows in the ’50s and ’60s, and recall reading that Mary Tyler Moore was in one of these as a regular. But searching my memory, and even the internet, I couldn’t find a referenc.

Long before we knew her as Mary Richards in the WJM newsroom, Ms. Moore was indeed a regular on a sleuth series — but you may not have actually “seen” her.
The show was Richard Diamond, Private Detective, and it aired from 1957 to 1960 with David Janssen in the title role. Diamond was also a successful radio series prior to this; it starred Dick Powell, who felt, when the television version came along, that he was too old for the part and referred the producers to Janssen — who later became Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive Moore played Sam, the huskyvoiced answering-service operator who took calls for Diamond’s agency. We heard her dulcet tones, but all we
on History Channel, Hirst passed things off to another creative team for Netflix prequel Vikings: Valhalla, which streamed for three seasons from 2022-2024.
Yet now, the British screenwriter is prepping his own spiritual sequel, set once again within the cutthroat world of Norsemen.

Amidst all that intrigue, the most intriguing character for Hirst was Erik and Gunnhild’s son, Egil (Karlis Arnolds Avots). Describing him as a “killer and a poet,” the writer mused in a chat with Variety: “To me, Egil was a gift from the gods. In Iceland, he’s one of the country’s founding fathers. He’s full of contradictions, so you never quite know where he’s going to go . . . He can be gentle and kind, and then he’s completely brutal . . . Egil is totally fearless. You recognize he has a soul, and out of that soul comes his poetry.”

The Beginning of the End Times
The conspiracy of the silos continues to unravel in season three, but to fully explain just what’s happening in this dystopian future, showrunner Graham Yost and his writers must plunge us into the past.
Of course, season two ended with rebellious engineer Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) returning to Silo 18 after her unsanctioned jaunt across the wasteland to Silo 17 — where she saw exactly what happens when the powersthat-be get wind of an uprising. In that final, she and nefarious I.T. guy Bernard (Tim Robbins) got caught outside the airlock, a wall of flames headed their way. It should come as no surprise that Jules lives to fiht another day . . . but at a cost.
As Apple’s synopsis teases, Juliette “returns with memory loss as the silo recovers from rebellion and faces a dangerous new threat.”

also introduced us, ever so briefl, to the “Before Times” — i.e., “before” the world turned into a toxic, despotic mess — with a scene featuring reporter Helen Drew (The Matrix Resurrections’ Jessica Henwick) and Congressman Daniel Keene (Fear Street’s Ashley Zukerman). As Apple’s release furthermore details, this new season will illuminate how Helen and Daniel “uncover a conspiracy that pulls them into a chain of events with catastrophic, irreversible consequences.”
Lest fans worry the show will end before we get some answers, Apple has already greenlit a fourth and final season, hich was shot back-to-back with this one.

While there’s presumably no connection, this news comes a few months after it was revealed that Oliver Sacks, the real-life inspiration for Wolf, fabricated some of his most famous case studies.

In September of 2020, the girl they call Eleven introduced us to another precocious, powerful young woman named Enola Holmes — little sister of Sherlock. That film was followed by a sequel in 2022. And this Canada Day, we get a third.
Here, Enola is in Malta, on the verge of marrying Lord Tewkesbury (House of Guinness’ Louis Partridge). Though she loves her groom-to-be, our heroine has mixed feelings about the institution of marriage. Yet all of these emotional complications take a backseat when Enola learns that Sherlock (Henry Cavill) has been kidnapped.
In addition to Brown, Partridge and Cavill, also returning from previous instalments are Himesh Patel as Dr. John Watson, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as the supervillainous Moriarty and Helena Bonham Carter as Enola’s mum, Eudoria.
Speaking on Enola’s conflicted state of mind entering this latest adventure, Brown — who is also an exec producer — told Tudum: “She’s built something for herself, which is amazing, but she’s also questioning what she wants next. I think that’s something so many people can relate to . . . I’ve grown up alongside her, so exploring those themes felt really personal. It’s about balancing independence with love, ambition with vulnerability, and figuring out what parts of yourself you want to hold onto vs. what you’re ready to let change. That felt really honest to play.”

The post-Yellowstone saga of Beth and Rip heads to the stalls for season one. At press time, no second season had been announced, but considering that Dutton Ranch was Paramount+’s most-watched original series debut ever, we’d wager it’s only a matter of time. That said, another writer will be taking the reins, as creator Chad Feehan has departed following reported clashes with stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, as well as franchise mastermind Taylor Sheridan

One of the career-defining oles in a very accomplished career, 2001’s Legally Blonde cast Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a California sorority queen bee whose bubbly disposition masked a keen intellect and dauntless determination.
In that fist film, Elle palayed those attributes into an unlikely admission to Harvard Law — a career path she continued in 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. A third entry in the franchise has long been rumoured, but this week Prime brings us an eight-part prequel, produced by Witherspoon under her prolificHello Sunshine banner. No doubt, the Oscar winner leaves some big pumps to fill — a task that will fall to newcomer
Lexi Minetree. Per the synopsis: “Season one of Elle follows Elle Woods before she was a fish out-of-water at Harvard. We meet her in 1995 as a fish in the tumultuous waters of high school, where she encounters tricky friendships, forbidden romance and questionable fashion choices. Through it all, Elle uses her family as a touchstone, and forms an even tighter bond to her mother (Grace and Frankie’s June Diane Raphael), proving that they can
get through anything life throws their way as long as they have each other . . .”
Speaking with Bustle, Witherspoon teased: “It’s her junior year of high school, and her father (Z Nation’s Tom Everett Scott) gets transferred to Seattle. Sunshine and vibrant colours are traded for rain and grunge, and it’s such a mismatch. It’s really fun to see Elle Woods as this fish out of ater in 1990s grunge-era Seattle.”
Even before the debut, a second season has already been ordered.

SCRAPPILY EVER AFTER?
Comedian Michelle Buteau unveils the third and final chapter in this romantic dramedy, based on her own acclaimed 2020 essay collection of the same name.
These past two seasons have followed the charmingly messy attempts of Brooklyn stylist Mavis Beaumont (Buteau) to piece her life back together after breaking up with the man she thought she’d spend her life with. It’s a saga that’s taken her from New York to Italy and back again, with a quirky array of friends, family and suitors helping/hindering the journey, as she strives for not only love, but to live life as her truest, best self.
Per Tudum, season three will see Mavis reunite, however briefl, with her maybe-the-one boytoy Luca (Marouane Zotti), while also getting a weekly dose of tough love from a new therapist played by comedy icon Wanda Sykes.
Looking back on the tumult that the character went through last year, Buteau told Tudum that: “Mavis has really put herself out there, and if she continues to do so, the sky’s the limit.”
The star/co-creator furthermore previewed that this final season will b “lived in, lived out loud . . . we’ll tie up and let it loose, honey!”

For what it’s worth, the episode title, “Erickerhead,” is a riff on David Lynch’s 1977 mindbender Eraserhead.

Till Treachery Do Us Part
Despite enjoying a wide theatrical release in the United States in April, this acclaimed action-thriller-comedy was not available at all to audiences north of the border till it hit Prime in June.
How I Met Your Mother alum Jason Segel plays Dan, a sputtering film diector whose marriage is in no better shape than his career. He may not be able to solve the latter problem, but he’s sure as hell got a plan to sort out the former: kill his wife on their upcoming getaway to the cabin.
The wife in question, aspiring actress Lisa, is played by Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving, and the fist of the movie’s multiple twists comes in the fact that she — equally, if not more so, unsatisfied in their holy mtrimony — is also planning to dispatch Dan during the course of this little vacay. Alas, both of their nefarious plots are
rudely interrupted when the cabin is invaded by another, even more demented couple (Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis) on the run from the law. Can Lisa and Dan put aside their spouseicidal impulses to keep themselves and each other alive? What’s more, could this life-and-death crisis be just the jolt their flailing marrige needs to get back on track?
A remake of Tommy Wirkola’s 2021 Norwegian flic The Trip, Over Your Dead Body was directed by Jorma Taccone, a founding member of SNL musical comedy troupe The Lonely Island. As he told Deadline: “This movie is so many different tones, and I’ve been saying that it’s a lot of needles to thread. Basically, it’s almost like a suspense drama in the beginning, and then it becomes a home invasion movie, and then it becomes an action movie.”

After closing a deal in 2018 to be the exclusive home of Peanuts content (a pact that runs through 2030), Apple TV has produced a whole bunch of new specials and series. But they’ve also got the rights to the oldies, both iconic and obscure. Now, one of the latter is getting a re-release, on the eve of Independence Day. Originally broadcast in 1988 and 1989, This Is America, Charlie Brown is an eight-part mini that sees Charlie et al. putting their indelible spin on such pivotal moments in U.S. history as the Mayflowe , the Constitution and the launch of the NASA Space Station.

ONE OF AGATHA CHRISTIE’S most beloved characters will be returning to television with a new incarnation: Hercule, an upcoming BBC series (set to stream in Canada on BritBox) focusing on iconic Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.
The six-part series is being described as “an intimate study of Hercule the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars. The series takes a magnifying glass to three of Christie’s most celebrated stories, while also charting Hercule’s burgeoning friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, his early encounters with Scotland Yard’s James Japp, and introducing him to one particular nemesis.”
Tell the Sleuth
Cast in the leading role is Edward Bluemel, recently seen in We Might Regret This and My Lady Jane. Bluemel joins a lengthy list of actors to have played the role on stage, film, telvision and even radio, including Tony Randall, Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov, John Malkovich and, most recently, Kenneth Branagh.
Of course, the actor who’s become most associated with Poirot is David Suchet, who
played the character for 24 years (from 1989 until 2013) in Agatha Christie’s Poirot.
“I feel very lucky to have been trusted with such an iconic character who has been played by so many great actors,” said Bluemel in a statement. “I can’t wait to continue Hercule’s legacy.”
Hercule is being written by Benji Walters (Code of Silence), while Jonny Campbell (Am I Being Unreasonable?) will be directing the fist two episodes. Charlie Palmer (A Woman of Substance) will serve as the series’ producer.
“My father had the privilege of working with David Suchet for nearly 25 years, and I now have the good fortune of being able to share my great-grandmother’s brilliant stories with a new generation of viewers,” said James Prichard, executive producer with Agatha Christie Limited. “Edward Bluemel is an extremely talented performer and will make a great addition to the long line of actors that have played this celebrated character, aided and abetted by Benji Walters’ thoughtful scripts. I cannot wait to see Edward on screen as Hercule Poirot.”

BLAST FROM THE PAST
Seth Rogen and producing/writing partner Evan Goldberg have their hands full at the moment, currently in production on the second season of their acclaimed comedy The Studio (in which Rogen also stars). However, the Vancouver natives are clearing some time in their collective schedule to resurrect a beloved Canadian show from the past, with the duo revealing they’re in the process of rebooting The Littlest Hobo
The Canadian classic has a long history with viewers, first aired in syndication between 1963 and 1965. However, the iteration that is best remembered is the CTV revival, which ran from 1979 until 1985
As fans of a certain age will recall, the show’s title referred to an exceptionally intelligent German Shepherd that wandered from town to town, sticking around long enough to help people in need before (as the iconic theme song declared) he’d “just keep moving on.”

coming to Crave, and is the first scripted project to emerge from a deal between Bell Media (the streamer’s parent company), Lionsgate Canada and Point Grey Pictures, the production company founded by Rogen and Goldberg (and named after the Vancouver school where they met).
“The Littlest Hobo was a foundational show of our childhood,” Rogen and Goldberg said in a joint statement. “We are thrilled to have the honour of bringing it back for a new generation alongside our partners at Crave. And though the hobo may be little, we promise big things to come. That doesn’t mean the dog will be huge like Clifford. The hobo will still be littl. But the adventures will be BIG.”
In another joint statement, Lionsgate Television Group’s Scott Herbst and Jocelyn Hamilton added: “With its Canadian roots, Point Grey is the ideal creative partner for The Littlest Hobo and Crave is the perfect home for the series to connect with audiences across Canada.”
Claire Danes won critical acclaim (and her seventh Golden Globe nomination) for her work in Netflix psychological drama The Beast in Me. Her next project will also see Danes in business with the streamer, which emerged victorious in a bidding war for her new series, Lovesick
Based on the Israeli series The Best Worst Thing, Sarah Treem (The Affai ) is attached as writer, showrunner and executive producer alongside Danes.
Danes will play Annika, a renowned breast cancer surgeon whose world changes after she receives devastating news. “Annika, a renowned breast cancer surgeon, has just been diagnosed with cancer herself,” explains the synopsis. “Her new patient, Nate, is a promising politician. The series
explores their interwoven lives, delving into themes of love, sex, illness, death, family, children, health, medicine and the meaning of life — all while Annika is simultaneously undergoing breast cancer treatment.”
“I’m thrilled to get to tell this story with the genius Claire Danes. We’ve been looking for something to do together for a very long time, and this character, Annika, is perhaps a mix of both of our wildest dreams,” said Treem in a statement. “To get to tell a story about all the things keeping me up at night anyway — life, death, children, love, middle age, courage, science and faith — is an extraordinary opportunity I don’t take lightly in these turbulent times.”

IVING INTO THE VAMPIRE LESTAT
, the third season of Interview With the Vampire finds manipultive and sexy vampire Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) now a bona fide rock star. As he tours North America with his band, the tone of the usually dark drama seems lighter than its previous iteration as Lestat experiences the perks of fame and fortune. But, as showrunner Rolin Jones informs viewers, a rose by any other name still smells the same. “You’re being seduced,” he teases. “It’s going to get about as dark as we’ve ever gone.”
Even if the onscreen action currently feels more playful, that is by deceptive design. “It is structured around how Lestat wants to tell his story,” says Jones. “I think he comes in very confident, thinking he can be lib and fun and keep it at bay. As he gets deeper and deeper into recording [his version of the story] and things are coming up, it begins to change how the story is being told, and how you’ll feel about it. It’s a part of an emotional landscape.”
Interview With the Vampire’s Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) reinvents himself this season as a full-on rock star.
The journey of the third season is, in part, framed around the contents of 111 albums, Lestat’s life’s work until catastrophes — that we are yet unaware of — ensue. novel and just reading it,” says Jones. “Some of it is [meaningful] and some of it you can just imagine he’s screwing around a little bit.”
Reid imagines Lestat wants his audience to have fun, more than anything. “He doesn’t want to engage in any sort of trauma porn or any sort of capacity in which he may have been interpreted, in the past,” he says. “That’s from the books, and I think Rolin and the team have done an amazing job of replicating that experience . . . where you feel like you’ve gone into a much more irreverent, playful space, but the darkness creeps in very slowly and takes over. He can’t escape it, either. It’s like he’s constantly crawling out of the grave while it’s being shoveled full of dirt.”

Other than his creative ambitions resulting in the documentation of his chaotic rock star life, cynical journalist Daniel Molloy, played by Eric Bogosian, is also willing to listen to Lestat’s defiant side of the stor, after publishing Louis de Pointe du Lac’s (Jacob Anderson) version of events. This, says Bogosian, fundamentally changes the structure of the show. “This season, I’m not interviewing Louis anymore which had a step-bystep solve-the-mystery thing to it,” says Bogosian. “Now, Daniel is interviewing Lestat, who is doing everything he can to throw things in the way of the interview, and it becomes a much more headbanging experience.”
What also makes the interview experience much different from the fist is that, after completing his book, Daniel was turned into a vampire by Armand (Assad Zaman). “I’d say that, even if he wasn’t good at life, he’s a very rational guy and he’s led

a rational life,” says Bogosian. “And now, he’s in this very chaotic vampiric universe where normal logic does not apply. It’s confusing and challenging.”
Another shock awaits Daniel with the arrival of Gabriella de Lioncourt, whose intimate relationship with the younger undead Lioncourt is surprising to anyone unfamiliar with the Anne Rice books. Played by Jennifer Ehle, perhaps still best known for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, this iteration of Gabriella is also very much seen through the eyes of an occasionally unreliable narrator. “What’s important is the story that Lestat’s telling,” says Ehle. “I think you get a sense of who she is when you see the entire thing. But I think I was just realizing his vision of her. Who she is [in her own mind], is kind of not important for the storytelling.”
Jones adds that, while Gabriella’s unfolding as a character appears one way to readers of the books, he and the writers have used the entire oeuvre to tell this version of the story. “There are a lot of decisions we made about Gabriella based on some later books,”

he says. “Anne gave us all these books and we’re looking at them all the time to try to take relevant material and put it here and now.”
As the narrative circles less and less around mere mortals, Anderson and Reid reflect on the bigest difference between playing the human versions of their characters, and them as vampires. “Part of what is so inviting about Anne Rice’s vampires is that they’re the most human once they become vampires,” says Anderson. “These are characters that in their human existence didn’t ever quite do the processing, and now they have to live with themselves forever.”
For Reid, this has been a real opportunity to amplify the issues that plagued Lestat as a human. “There’s a quote from one of the books where [Rice] does say, ‘We never really change over time. We just become more of what we really are,’” says Reid. “When you add on an immortal layer, all of the humanity and the issues that drove their life to certain points, are amplified . . . The vampire gives us an artifie to explore humanity in this very large operatic scale.”
To that end, creating Lestat’s larger-than-life onstage persona had Reid looking to his character’s 18th-century performance roots, as well as more recent musical legends. “His onstage persona is the French iteration of the commedia dell’arte, because that’s where he built his
stage presence,” says Reid. “I did look at David Bowie, particularly at the Cracked Actor recordings of those live concerts — mostly to try and always remind myself that he’s not human, he’s supernatural. I wanted to make sure we maintain that he is a kind of other thing, which I thought David Bowie did extraordinarily. But, in terms of his stage presence, I wanted to make sure it felt theatrical, because he’s still performing the idea of a rock star — at least at the beginning. Then, as the show progresses, the performance starts to disappear.”

ASURPRISE HIT WHEN IT DEBUTED last year, crime caper Deli Boys told the story of the Dar brothers: Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh), a pair of pampered Pakistani-American siblings whose father’s accidental death in a freak golfing ccident revealed his convenience store empire was a front for an illicit cocaine and money-laundering scheme. The fist season concluded with Mir preparing to get married to high-strung Bushra ( Zainne Saleh ) — who called off

Raj then stepped up by offering to marry Nandika (Amita Rao), which would kill two birds with one stone by also sealing a drug distribution deal with her restaurateur family. Alas, when Raj and Mir’s newly inherited store was blown up by a mysterious enemy, they learned their dad’s death was no accident, but orchestrated by his duplicitous partner Ahmad (Brian George).
Now, in this new season, the Dars are faced with a unique problem: after
pulling off their bigest drug deal yet, they have a mountain of cash and no idea how to go about laundering it.
That’s when ruthless casino owner Max Sugar (SNL alum Fred Armisen) enters the picture, offering a solution that the brothers will soon come to regret.
According to showrunner Michelle Nader, viewers have connected to Deli Boys because, for all the criminal intrigue, it’s ultimately a show about family. “What we try to do is tell a story about people who are faced with adversity and have to get through it as a family. I think that is a universal story . . . whether it’s crime or whatever,” she says. “But this happens to be that they’re dealing with crime because they were thrust into this unbeknownst to them . . . And I think that is what bonded them.”
Despite bumbling their way into success in the criminal underworld, the Dar brothers are still in way over their heads. “We always think of it as, like, a Mario Bros. game. They think they’re walking up, and then it’s BOOM!, hit a pitfall and they’re back at the bottom,” Nader explains. “I mean, that’s like a lot

of life. You try to move forward, but there’s always gonna be this obstacle that you didn’t see coming.”
Bringing Max Sugar into the mix not only adds an extra dimension of peril for the brothers, it provides Armisen with an opportunity to show off his ange. “Everybody thinks of Fred as this funny, sweet guy, but he was really interested in doing it because I think he wants to sort of dimensionalize that idea of him,” Nader says. “And he did it so chillingly that we were like, ‘Wow, OK Fred, you’re frightening us!’ Because it’s so underplayed, you know? It’s so deep. He can do anything, even though he’s smiling. That’s really, I think, what audiences are going to find so antastic and new for Fred.”
Sugar also lets the writers explore a new side of the Dar brothers’ shrewd consigliere Lucky (Poorna Jagannathan), who sparks an instant, unexpected romance with the villain.
“We knew we wanted this character to fall for her, because it’s two psychos in love,” Nader muses. “You know, he’s gonna recognize that this woman is as crazy as he is, and be completely obsessed with her. And he is obsessed with her immediately. She is with him, too — but she plays it a little cooler, because she’s much more guarded . . . I don’t wanna give too much away, but there’s a vulnerability to Lucky that happens. For me, I wanted to see that side of her.”
Another addition to the cast in season two is Andrew Rannells, recently seen opposite Allison Janney in HBO’s Miss You, Love You. Here, he plays Philly prosecutor-turned-mayoral candidate Andrew Chadwater, who becomes an antagonist for the Dar boys due to his campaign platform of cleaning up crime in the City of Brotherly Love. “He really has such a strong belief in himself and what he’s doing that it’s very easy for him to lose his way and get distracted,” Rannells chuckles. “And he becomes so power-hungry so quickly that he completely goes off the ails.”
Playing a politician who shows one side to the public and a very different one in private was an opportunity the actor savoured. “Well, what was fun about it is to have to play the part of a good politician and a ‘good guy’ — and then being allowed to snap at people for making minor infractions. It was really fun just to have no regard for people’s feelings . . . And weirdly, those scenes being so mean to people on set, it creates this fun, very lively atmosphere.”

Speaking as a viewer, Rannells notes he often finds himself dawn to stories like Deli Boys about “normal people pushed to extremes [who] then end up doing really violent or criminal things. Like, Ozark I loved. Bloodline I thought was also really a great example of that. Good people falling into a bad situation, trying to get out of it, but then also realizing, ‘Oh, maybe there’s some benefit to us kind of dabbling in these areas.’ But the way that this show is written, and the thing that I think makes it successful and so much fun to watch, is that at the centre of it is this family story. There is a lot of heart, and they do love each other, and they do want to help each other and stick together . . . It’s just, they’re not always very good at it. And they’re not great criminals either, by the way! Like, they do end up getting away with a lot of things, but they’re not the smoothest. So, taking it to that extreme does open the door to a lot of ridiculous situations.”

Actor Jamie Hector explains why Apple TV’s remake of Cape Fear expands on and pays tribute to the 1991 fil
Asked what audiences should expect from the series adaptation of Cape Fear, one of its stars, Jamie Hector, says, “Prepare to be uncomfortable.” The pillars of the American Southern gothic thriller, about a convicted criminal seeking revenge against his former defender after being released from a lengthy prison sentence, are still there. But in the hands of series creator and showrunner Nick Antosca (The Act), and his lead actors Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson and Javier Bardem, the clear division between good and evil that played out in previous versions of John MacDonald’s 1957 novel gets very muddied.

Hector, best known for his roles on The Wire, Bosch and We Own This City, vividly recalls the iconic 1991 film, diected by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro as the menacing Max Cady. “It lives deep inside of me — I was a fan before I signed onto this. When I was training at Lee Strasberg, the conversation was De Niro. There was nothing that he could do wrong. All of his work was spot on,” he says. “Fast forward to this, you think about a project being remade. You always want it to be done right. When I saw they signed Javier and Amy, I was like, ‘Yeah, this is going to be a heavy hitter right here.’ And they did not let me down.”

Adam’s character, Anna Bowden, has helped release from prison after overturning a false conviction. Rawlins is now a private investigator and Bowden’s right-hand man, who can smell the danger emanating from Bardem’s Max Cady a mile away. “What happens when you go in, no matter how you go in, you come out different,” says Hector. “That’s the reason why Ray Rawlins can look into the eyes of Max Cady and recognize trouble. He knows it. He can sense personality and energy very quickly, so he recognizes good people as well.” Hector’s character is also a window into an off-the-clock Anna Bowden, who is making poor decisions under pressure. “Amy does an amazing job being so vulnerable,

and Patrick too, because as a husband, having to deal with this individual that is floting around his wife and his family . . . It’s very — to echo what we just said — uncomfortable.”
Taking a two-hour film and expanding it into a 10-hour series allows for the inclusion of themes that were not part of the source material. Antosca’s version delves deeper into a flwed justice system where too many serve long sentences for crimes they did not commit. For Hector, his storyline as convict-turned-PI was an opportunity to pay homage to a real-life hero. “I had a friend, Ken Thompson, who was a District Attorney in Brooklyn. One of the fist things he did, in office, was [look into] individuals that were wrongly incarcerated, brought their cases back
to life, partnered with a professor at Harvard, and released over 23 wrongly convicted inmates,” says Hector. “A lot of them become private investigators. Having that level of intel made this [project] a no-brainer.”
Then, of course, there was the exceptional talent attached to the project. “When you know the forces that are behind this one, you know it’s going to be good,” Hector says, of having executive producers Scorsese and Steven Spielberg at the helm. Academy Award-winner Bardem, says his co-star, was also a delight to work with, despite his severely disturbed character. “The beauty of working with him is that he flips the switch, and you don’t even see the switch get flipped” says Hector. “He’s present, having fun and aware of everything going on around him, in terms of making sure everybody’s at ease and

comfortable, but he’s really locked into the work and the inner life of the character that he’s playing. I really had a good time watching him go into it. He sucks the air out the room.”
What Antosca creates in 10 hours is a pressure cooker that never seems to release any air out of its valves. “Nick and his incredible mind continue to place the family in a position where they come up for air and then come close to drowning again. If you can do that in a way where it’s dynamic, you don’t know what’s coming next, but every time you think you’re winning, you’re losing,” says Hector. “They’re doing everything in their power to survive, and this one person is a master manipulator. He is a craftsman at destroying other people’s lives. When you’re telling somebody the truth and they don’t believe you, it’s a painful feeling, especially when you know you’re not lying, but somebody else has figued out a way to convince the world that you’re crazy.”
That tension is a product of teamwork under Antosca, a leader who hires the right people and trusts them to do their job. “If you come to him, and ask him a question, he’ll chime in, but other than that, I saw his trust in the talent, his trust in the directors and what they brought to the stage,” he says. “Nick handpicked the directors and the actors. I mean, they’re living legends. And when they
say it’s a go, you really want to do the work the best you can.” To the degree that one would be willing to sacrifie ample screentime for the opportunity to be part of something potentially iconic. “Sometimes there are projects where you’re willing to carry the waterfall. You want to be a part of great work,” says Hector. “But I also loved the scripts, I loved the cast, I loved the team behind it. Just an opportunity to be a part of it was wonderful.” Even if the end result is, well, uncomfortable.

House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock stars as Kryptonian Kara ZorEl, cousin of Superman (David Corsenswet). Per the synopsis, “When an unexpected and ruthless enemy threatens, Kara Zor-El is forced, against her will, to team up with an unlikely companion. Together, they embark on an epic cosmic journey where revenge and justice are at stake — and where Kara must confront her origins to find her own path as a her.” As director Craig Gillespie told Empire, the screenplay blew him away. “I always loved the first Iron Man: flawed, complex and conflicte” he said. “They sent me the Ana Nogueira script [for Supergirl], and two scenes in, I was like, ‘I’m in.’ It was exactly what I hoped for; it’s all character. She went from an incredibly, incredibly dark scene to this irreverent character scene, all in the first 15 pages. [Supergirl] has got a lot of trauma, a lot of demons; she’s unapologetic. You get to have a character that can be punky and edgy and not take off those rough edges”

These include Steve-O undergoing a painful prostate exam from a robot named Larry, Poopies putting a shock collar on his most sensitive of areas, and an “escape room from hell” that punishes everyone’s bodies.
Inspired by true events, this Second World War drama tells the story of an American soldier (Scott Eastwood) trapped behind enemy lines during the last major German offensiv, which will become known as the Battle of the Bulge. Armed only with his Motorola SCR-300 radio, a new technology only battleready near the end of the war, he must use his wits and spy craft to thwart the advancing Nazi Panzer army and find his way back hom.

Q This fourth season opens with a major cast turnover. Lots of characters leaving, lots of new ones coming in. And there’s a very meta moment in the premiere where Wheezer (Aaron Ashmore) basically says, “This may not be the same SkyMed.” For you, as cast members, does this feel like a reset?
A NATASHA: I mean, if anything, it feels like all the new characters have brought a fresh, new and exciting energy. Obviously it was sad to say goodbye to some of our SkyMed family. But it was also a really exciting opportunity to sort of revamp the show with new storylines, and have audiences fall in love with brand-new characters. It feels like there’s an exciting opportunity to build off of these nw characters’ stories. It was really fun and it brought an exciting energy to set.
Q On the topic of being in season four now, it’s a rare thing for any actor to spend so much time with one character. Most of an actor’s life is jumping from job to job, character to character. Does it feel like

you’ve gotten to go deeper here, with Hayley and Crystal, than with any other characters you’ve played?
A MORGAN: We’ve really gotten to know them deeply, and I feel like the lines between character and our personal selves kind of blend at some point. It’s funny how a lot of the times with the writing, it mirrors your own experience in life. That happens so often where I’m like, “Did the writers read my mind . . . or are they watching my life?” So, it’s been really fun to play a character for so long — and get to know her so well and mesh our lives, in a way.
NATASHA: And also to grow up with these characters. I feel like I, Natasha, am taking my life experience of my 20s — because I started in my early 20s, now I’m in my late 20s — and that

also transpires into the character. It’s just a really incredible experience to be able to grow up with your character and with your best friend — because we’re best friends in real life, too — so it’s really fun to sort of seep Natasha and Morgan’s relationship into our characters’ relationship and their friendship dynamic. It’s such a dream.
QHow are Hayley and Crystal different today than when we were first introduced to them back in season one? How have they evolved?
A
NATASHA: Hayley, you met her in season one and she was fresh into the SkyMed world, and a little bit in over her head. She was dealing with finding out she hd the BRCA1 gene [which yields an increased risk of cancer] and the loss of her mom. You see her through her journey of coping, and then you meet her again in season four where she’s now the chief nurse and she’s in charge of her own, newfound SkyMed family. She’s made her family within SkyMed. She cares so deeply about SkyMed — because it’s all that she has. You see her step into this role of chief nurse and be so passionate about it — and you see her say goodbye to our old characters and bring in new faces, and really just crave the family dynamic that she once had. It’s been really fun watching her grow into her own, to find her onfidene and her place in the world.
MORGAN: And I feel like for Crystal as well, she’s also growing up. Season one, she was a
fliht nurse, and then she was thinking about being a nurse practitioner, and then she kind of got the push to be a doctor. We’ve seen her grow up in that way — understanding she wants to be a doctor, going into medical school and residency, and building up her life. I feel like it’s been a really fun journey for Crystal — and for Hayley.
QThis is very much a workplace drama. But it stands out because the workplace is so remote, so isolated . . . as opposed to being in a big city or even a normal small town. All these characters have been shipped in from other parts of the country and, different as they ar, they almost have no choice but to hang out with each other and become each other’s support system. Do you feel like that mirrors your own experience as actors, filming so remotel, on location in the wilds of Ontario?
A NATASHA: Oh, absolutely. We are sent to Northern Ontario. We’re all away from our families and our homes, and we’re there for three, four months. That just immediately brings everyone so much closer. Like, we are leaning on each other in ways that you wouldn’t be if you weren’t away from home. We’re absolutely going out on weekends and having game nights. Morgan and I rent a house together, and we’re always having people over.
And then I also think that transpires into our onscreen relationships. That’s very palpable — that we actually are all friends. It is a really

unique experience that, like you say, these characters are living in the north together, in a crew house — and we’re essentially doing the same in real life. It’s so much fun. We have the best time filmin. We can’t believe that this is our job.
Q On a tonal level, from one scene to the next, this show can go from goofy shenanigans to utter heartbreak. Is that a tough balancing act for the writers, and for you as actors?
A MORGAN: I think it’s necessary, honestly. Because with the amount of drama and these deeper sort of moments with each other, you need to lighten it up a little bit. Else I feel like maybe we would lose the audience. And I feel like it’s similar to how it is in the field, here people that I’ve talked to that are in the medical field . . . ou need humour. You need to be able to kind of look at things lightly — else it can get very, very heavy very quickly. You have to have that goofiness and tht comedy in there to break up all of that traumatic stuff tht happens.

Outside of that, her CV includes Supernatural, The Good Doctor, Ties That Bind, a main role on the TV version of John Grisham’s The Firm and the 2013 TV movie pilot for When Calls the Heart. She also took the lead in 2012 horror flick The Possession. Meanwhile, Winnipeger Morgan Holmstrom has appeared in time-travel romance Outlander as Wakyo’teyehsnonhsa — first wife of oung Ian. might be surprised at just how based-inreality they are? They’re not as “crazy” as the audience might think . . .
A NATASHA: Oh, absolutely not. One that comes to mind immediately was in season three — the tobogganing accident where a rod or a stick or a branch went through all three people on a sled. We show up to set and we’re like, “Wow, this is crazy!” And no, this was a real accident that happened. So, the writers are actually pulling more injuries than you would expect from real-life things, if not all of them . . . I don’t know if it would be crazy to say that almost all of our injuries are based off of eal injuries — which is cool and fun and just kind of gives you a taste of the medical world.
MORGAN: And it helps that Julie [ Puckrin ], the writer, her sister is the consult for the show . . . [She] was a fliht nurse, and it’s kind of based on her life. Also, her brother-in-law was a pilot . . .
QAs you’re building your character and contemplating their day-to-day existence, how much thought do you give to the long-term impact that doing this type of job would have on someone’s psyche?
AMORGAN: At a certain point in the medical field, ou get a little bit numb to what happens around you. If it’s something that you’re seeing every single day . . . what I was saying earlier, that’s where that kind of humour comes in. Because there’s really no other way to process that pain and that trauma that you see. Having each other, having the characters lean on each other and have these tender moments . . . medical professionals, they need that. They need to be able to understand each other and lean on each other when you’re dealing with such hard things every single day. I think a big part of this season and previous seasons was that you can reach out for help. If you’re struggling with any sort of mental health [issue], reaching out for help is a very good thing.

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
