EDITOR’S NOTE
SUBURBAN ANGST FUELS DARK COMEDY
Series such as Desperate Housewives mined comedic gold from peering behind the white picket fences of suburbia to expose the dark underbelly concealed beneath those manicured lawns and minivan-stocked driveways.
Similar terrain is explored in DTF St. Louis, a new limited series from HBO that follows a trio of Midwestern suburbanites — portrayed by Jason Bateman (Ozark), Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me) and David Harbour (Stranger Things) — who pursue longburied desires courtesy of the titular dating app, which promises, “All of the excitement, none of the consequences.”
Bateman plays Clark Forrest, whose job as a weatherman on a local TV newscast has made him a minor celebrity. While reporting on a storm, he’s partnered with Floyd (Harbour), a kind-hearted but not-too-bright ASL interpreter. An unlikely friendship is sparked, which leads Clark to meet Floyd’s wife, Carol (Cardellini). All their lives change irrevocably when Clark introduces Floyd to the app, and the swiping begins. “These three people are simultaneously letting their passions come out after years of not really being able to live inside of them, hoping that there aren’t real heavy consequences for that,” the series’ creator, Steve Conrad, told Vanity Fair. Naturally, there are consequences — deadly ones. When one of the three wind up dead, a quirky murder mystery ensues as a pair of mismatched police detectives (played by Six Feet Under’s Richard Jenkins and Wednesday’s Joy Sunday) enter the picture, determined to solve it.
DTF St. Louis
SUNDAY, 8 P.M. & 11:55 P.M., HBO CANADA
According to Conrad, he set the series in St. Louis (even though it was shot in Atlanta) in order to subvert viewer’s assumptions about Midwesterners. “Why I wanted to set it in the Midwest was that people who don’t live in the Midwest make these suppositions that the people who live there are a little more normal,” he explained. “St. Louis became a way to surprise the audience with what actually is taking place behind these closed doors, in a place you have mistakenly assumed was pretty peaceful and quiet.”

Predator: Badlands
DISNEY+
When a grizzled mercenary named Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) first faced off with an extraterrestria hunter back in 1987, few would have imagined that Predator would have sparked a successful movie franchise that would continue for four more decades. The latest big-screen sequel has arrived on Disney+, with a premise that turns the concept on its head. When a young Predator (played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) is outcast from his clan, he’s exiled to a remote planet. There, he discovers an unlikely ally in Thia (Elle Fanning), with the two embarking on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary. “The idea was to see what would happen if we put [a Predator character] through the same challenge that Dutch went through in the original,” said director Dan Trachtenberg in an interview with SyFy. “We really wanted to invert the premise and see what he would be capable of if he was stripped away from all of his advantages.”

WEB OF INTRIGUE!
We’re very into the comics, and it’s been disappointing to see all the comic shows gone lately. Any others on the docket?
—E.N., West Vancouver
One of the more intriguing superhero titles coming to TV later this year is a very eccentric twist on the Spider-Man mythos. Spider-Noir casts Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a disillusioned private eye in 1930s New York, who moonlights as a wallcrawling vigilante called the Spider. It’s a character that was voiced by Cage in the 2018 animated blockbuster SpiderMan: Into the Spider-Verse. Now, this live-action incarnation swings onto screens, marking the Oscar winner’s first time leading a TV show. Speaking with Esquire, Cage said he views his Spider gumshoe as “70 per cent Humphrey Bogart, and 30 per cent Bugs Bunny.” All eight episodes hit Prime on Wednesday, May 27 — and, playing into the film noir of it all, viewers can watch them in either colour or black-and-white!
S.W.A.T.’s Goin’ On Here?!
I’ve been waiting for the S.W.A.T. spinoff ever since [TV Week] wrote about it, but I didn’t see it in your Fall Preview. Was it axed?
—R.B.,
Langley
Last May, shortly after S.W.A.T. wrapped its eighth and final season on CBS, studio Sony Pictures Television announced a sequel series that would centre on once and future S.W.A.T. leading man Shemar Moore
Titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, that spinoff actually just wrapped filming on its first season, whic means the show is ready and waiting to hit the airwaves . once it finds a channel to air on, that is. You see, the show actually went into production without a guaranteed home on broadcast, cable or streaming. Luckily, per a report by Deadline, Exiles is expected to attract plenty of suitors in the coming weeks as Sony screens it for buyers. All of which is to say, you’ll see Hondo back in action eventually . . . we just don’t know when or where.
The show’s premise (via TVLine ) reads as follows: “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson (Moore) is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental S.W.A.T. unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”
Nicolas Cage plays a film noir inspired version of Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man in a new series coming to Prime Video this May.

From Suits to Trunks?
I’m going out on a limb that Suits L.A. is cancelled, since I haven’t seen it on the schedule yet, even into midseason, and now the star [Stephen Amell] is on another show . . . —C.M., Coquitlam
Unfortunately, the West Coast spinoff of creator Aaron Korsh’s explosively popular legal drama did not capture the zeitgeist in
I remember the 1980s very well for the number of nuclear apocalypse movies that were made. Threads and The Day After stand out in my mind. Were there others that I am forgetting?
–D.M., via email
The threat of nuclear war was a common theme in films of the Cold ar ’80s — many of them, such as Threads and The Day After, were made for television. At least one other was made for TV, but deemed so compelling that producers sent it to theatres first. That would be 1983’s Testament, which boasted a strong cast including Jane Alexander, William Devane and a young Kevin Costner. The premise was common enough for the genre — a typical family wakes up thinking it’s just another day, but soon everything is gone. Television and radio have stopped broadcasting, major cities have been vaporized and life as they know it is over.
The movie was based on a short
quite the same way as the original. The NBC series was cancelled in May, at the end of a 13-episode first season
It starred Toronto-born Stephen Amell as Ted Black, a one-time federal prosecutor in New York who, following a personal tragedy, started over in L.A. as a slick entertainment lawyer. Celebrity cameos and soapy office politics ensued
At the moment, as you note, Mr. Amell is leading Canadian crime drama The Borderline, which streams weekly on Crave.
But our hometown boy
story by Carol Amen, who had a nightmare about nuclear war, and got straight up to scribble down what she could remember. It became the only movie of this genre directed by a woman (Lynne Littman), yet is perhaps best known in Hollywood circles for the lawsuit that followed its release. Cast members sued the producers because, as the suit contended, they were paid “television wages” but the movie became a big-screen success, and they felt they were owed more. The case was settled out of court with no details released to the press.
Costner has said the film made a great impact on him and encouraged later roles in post-apocalyptic flics such as Waterworld and The Postman
will actually head back to Los Angeles soon enough, having just booked the lead role in Fox’s Baywatch reboot. He’ll play Hobie Buchannon, who in the original series was the “wild child” son of David Hasselhoff’s Mitch. Now a lifeguard captain himself, per reports Hobie is thrown for a loop when the daughter he never knew suddenly shows up, eager to join the family business. Thus far, Amell is the only member of the team that’s been cast.
Commenting via an official statement
showrunner Matt Nix enthused: “From the first conversation, Stephen Amell brought exactly what this new chapter of Baywatch demands: heart, intensity and that undeniable hero energy. He’s the kind of lead who can sprint into danger, carry the emotional weight and still make it feel fun. We’re so excited to get started.”
Fans can look forward to a premiere sometime in the 2026-2027 season. In the meantime, Amell better dust off that old salmon ladder pull-up bar from his Arrow days.

As previously reported, there are multiple Yellowstone spinoffs in the works, following the modern-day western riding off into the sunset at the end of 2024. None, we dare say, are so unexpected as this.
Moving the franchise from Paramount+ to CBS, Marshals centres on youngest Dutton sibling Kayce (Luke Grimes), who ended the original by leaving the constant power struggles at the family ranch in favour of a more peaceful life with his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill). This continuation looks to turn the show from a gritty streaming soap to a broadcast procedural, after a profound tragedy leads Kayce to holster up his guns once again.
As the network teases: “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana.

SUNDAY, 8 P.M., CBS
Kayce and his teammates — Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) — must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defence in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families.” You can also expect regular appearances from Yellowstone’s Native American power players Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty). In tonight’s premiere, Kayce tries to mesh with his new coworkers. Yet as the team sets out to thwart a domestic terrorism plot, Kayce is dragged into “a valley of buried Dutton family skeletons.”

H0LMES AGAIN!
As the aforementioned Watson returns to our fair airwaves, yet another Sherlock Holmes-inspired series arrives this week — centring not on the sidekick but the Great Detective himself.
Based on the classic works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the modern ones in Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes series (published between 2010 and 2015), this eight-parter introduces us to a rambunctious, 19-year-old Holmes, whose stint at Oxford University is falling short of high society’s expectations. That’s because, amidst numerous other antics, he’s gotten himself framed for murder. To find his way clear of the charges, Young Holmes (played by After heartthrob Hero Fiennes Tiffin) must harness his raw sleuthing potential. He’ll also need to by on a little help from his friends — no, not Watson. Rather, a fellow rogue named James Moriarty (Dónal Finn), who will one day become his nemesis.
Other cast includes the leading man’s real-life uncle, Joseph Fiennes ( Shakespeare in Love), playing his adventurous father Silas Holmes; Californication’s Natascha McElhone as his artistic mother Cordelia; Condor’s Max Irons as condescending elder brother Mycroft; and Oscar winner Colin Firth as a quite-possibly-villainous character named Sir Bucephalus Hodge. Meanwhile, behind the camera we have Guy Ritchie, who also lent his kinetic, quippy flair to the Roberty Downey, Jr. Sherlock flics. As Ritchie teased in a statement: “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, fin out what makes him tick and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”

RJ Decker
TUESDAY, 10 P.M.,
Canadian Scott Speedman — of Felicity, Grey’s Anatomy and Animal Kingdom fame — returns to the small screen. But this time, he’s anchoring the ensemble.
A breezy crime comedy, RJ Decker casts Speedman as the title character. Per ABC’s synopsis, RJ is “a former newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colourful-if-crime-fille world of South Florida. The series follows him tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre.”
Along the way, he’ll be aided and abetted by an equally bizarre group of frenemies, including his former cellmate Aloysius “Wish” Aiken (Friday
FRIDAY,
Night Lights alum Kevin Rankin), now a local bar owner; his ex Catherine Delacroix (Rectify breakout Adelaide Clemens), a savvy journalist; police detective Melody “Mel” Breu (Bevin Bru), who also happens to be Catherine’s new wife; and Emilia “Emi” Ochoa (Station 19’s Jaina Lee Ortiz), described as “a shadowy woman from his past who could be his greatest ally . . . or his one-way ticket back to prison.”
The show is based on the novels of Carl Hiaasen, himself a former journalist who specializes in quirky neo-noirs set in the Sunshine State. Most recently, you saw his work adapted for the screen by Apple TV, in the Vince Vaughn-led caper Bad Monkey.
Horrors of Combat
Still flxing those action hero muscles every chance he gets in between seasons of Reacher, Alan Ritchson leads this new flick about a squad of elite Army angers who are out on a training mission in the wilderness when they encounter a heavily armed robotic predator on a mission of its own: seek and destroy. The cast also includes Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad), Esai Morales (Ozark) and the legendary Dennis Quaid. It’s directed by The Hitman’s Bodyguard’s Patrick Hughes

Stages of Grief
From The Big Chill to his Oscar-winning turn in A Fish Called Wanda and beyond, Kevin Kline has, over the past four decades, proven himself to be a movie star of indelible presence — able to conjure a rare blend of comedy, charm and pathos.
What many film ans may not realize is that he’s also an accomplished treader of the boards, with three Tony Awards on the mantel next to that Oscar.
With this new series, Kline uses the screen to explore his passion for the stage.
He plays Richard Bean, a Broadway actor who flames out in a fashion more spectacular than any turn he ever gave in the theatre, after physically attacking a critic. More or less
blacklisted in New York City, he’s forced to return to the small town where he grew up — just in time for his mother’s funeral.
While still frantically plotting a comeback to the Great White Way, Richard becomes appalled that his family’s tiny playhouse — the hallowed ground where he fist became convinced of his grand destiny — has been reduced to cheap dinner theatre. And so, he devotes himself to restoring the place to greatness
(even if he can’t restore himself to the same just yet) by mounting a production of a genuine “American classic,” Our Town
Yet, in so doing, our selfabsorbed hero must confront the wreckage he left behind years ago with his brother (The Closer’s Jon Tenney), who also happens to be the theatre’s proprietor; aging father (Canadian stage and screen legend Len Cariou); and ex-girlfriend (four-time Emmy winner Laura Linney) — now the town mayor and, alas, married to his aforementioned brother.

LUST OF MY LIFE
We’ve just spent a page on Kevin Kline’s new series; now, it’s his old Definitel, Maybe co-star Rachel Weisz’ turn, as the Oscar winner heads up an ambitious new dramedy of her own. Based on Julia May Jonas’ 2022 novel Vladimir, Weisz plays a professor at a small liberal arts college who’s very much lost her sparl. Her enrolment numbers are dropping, her writing career is sputtering and her open marriage to a fellow professor (Mad Men’s John Slattery) no longer offers the thrill it did a decade ago . . . to say nothing of the fact that the man has just been implicated in a campus sex scandal. But then, all of a sudden, our purposefully unnamed protagonist finds herself intrigued by the arrival of a young colleague named Vladimir (The White Lotus breakout Leo Woodall). As her days become increasingly consumed with naughty fantasies about this young hunk, she tumbles down an exciting — but possibly catastrophic — rabbit hole of obsession. “It’s like a heightened fairytale,” Weiss told Tudum. “There’s definitely comedy and drama. It’s mischievous and a good tonal cocktail for exploring some very serious subjects. Her fantasy is about the power of desire — the invigorating, stimulating, inspiring and revivifying feeling that she gets from her obsession with Vlad. What it’s about is coming back to life in a certain way [after lying] dormant for some time.”

Another of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s charming provocations returns to TV on Thursday.

Ted is, of course, a prequel to the hit 2012 bigscreen comedy of the same name, which starred MacFarlane alongside Mark Wahlberg as an adult John. Which is to say, while the latter days of high school may traditionally be a time for growth and maturity, given that we know exactly where this duo ends up in 20 years’ time, well . . . it’s safe to say young Mr. Bennett won’t be “putting aside childish things” anytime soon.

As MacFarlane and his co-showrunners Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh cheekily teased in a statement: “We hope you enjoy these eight somewhat filty, hopefully funny, heartfelt episodes about a young man, his talking teddy bear and their highly dysfunctional family. On the off-chance the series is not your cup of tea, a great way to get us back is to leave all the episodes playing to completion on multiple devices throughout the house. That’ll show us.”

Q You’ve been on the show for two seasons now. Is it an interesting experience being a psychiatrist and wellness expert in the world of reality TV, where personal drama abounds?
Married to Medicine
SUNDAY, HAYU
A I can say that perhaps my training has done me well in this genre. But I just love to have meaningful conversations, to know people’s stories. And being able to share mine just takes it to another level — really sharing my family dynamic, raising my son that has special needs, showcasing my marriage, and showcasing mental health and making sure people know that people like me exist, where women can come for all types of mental health help.
Q Given that psychiatric training, which not all of your co-stars have, do you inherently end up serving as the group’s mediator when things get testy?
A Not necessarily my training, but that’s just who I am. I really like people to . . . not necessarily “get along,” but be able to express themselves in a meaningful way. So, it’s not my training, it’s more so just I’m a girl’s girl. I like to make sure that everyone feels heard, that everyone feels supported. We’re gonna have different opinions, arguments or heated fellowship . . . whatever you want to call it. But how can we also take little nuggets from each and every one of us? We are all women. We can actually learn from
each other, but we have to be able to listen in order to learn.
Q Can having cameras around, intrusive as it is, actually be valuable in tackling your issues head-on?
A Absolutely. You get to see your real self, and if you are wise enough, you’ll see yourself and say, “You know what? I need to improve on that. I need to improve on how I communicate with other people, my interpersonal effectiveness.” Really, it’s like a mirror.
Q
Has there ever been a moment when you were a little nervous about something that was caught on fil?
A Well, we do have a scene . . . my family and I were in the car and then my son, who does have special needs, had an emotional moment. And initially, I’m like, “Oh my gosh. I didn’t want people to see that part.” But I quickly realized, no, this is what this is about — showcasing real-life parenting moments. This is our family dynamic. This is how we have learned to support each person in the family. That moment was powerful. I had thousands of people reach out to me and say, “Thank you for showcasing a family like mine. Thank you for allowing me to be seen.” Families like mine, this is what we go through. These are the valleys, these are the mountains, this is real life . . . and we are navigating this thing the best that we know how.

and giants like Plateosaurus and Mamenchisaurus, all to illustrate how dinosaurs evolved across millennia in response to a volatile world. “Armoured icons such as Stegosaurus and Ankylosaurus square off gainst apex predators like Allosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex, while leviathans from Pliosaurus to Mosasaurus prowl the oceans, and Spinosaurus traverse both land and sea,” the synopsis adds. “Early feathered flies, including Anchiornis and Longipteryx, point toward the dinosaurs still with us today: birds.”
Marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, this documentary tells the story of the catastrophic collapse of the reactor, the Soviets’ calculated cover-up and the present-day fallout now intersecting with the war in Ukraine, revealing a tragedy that continues to reverberate. “Featuring revealing interviews with survivors speaking publicly for the first tim, alongside rare insight into the CIA and Soviet responses, the series exposes a web of secrecy, miscalculation, and human cost,” declares CNN. “Astonishing new footage from inside the nuclear exclusion zone reveals how this scarred landscape is once again under siege as war encroaches on one of the most dangerous places on Earth”.

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
WHILE U.S. TELEVISION
networks have been ordering far fewer pilots than they once did, NBC is seemingly bucking that trend by going all-in on pilot season. In fact, the peacock network recently ordered two multi-camera comedies. This brings NBC’s total pilot order so far to eight; as The Hollywood Reporter noted, that’s one more than was ordered by all the networks combined last year.
Newlyweds comes from Blackish writer Gail Lerner, and counts Jamie Lee Curtis among its executive producers. The series tells the “later-in-life love story of a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship.”
Take Me To The Pilot
Interestingly, the series was initially conceived for Netflix with Curtis to star. Now that it’s an NBC pilot, however, Curtis’ involvement has been downgraded to EP via her production company, Comet Pictures, with Tèa Leoni attached to star. Sources are indicating that Curtis may make an onscreen appearance in a supporting or guest-starring role.
Another comedy pilot — yet to be titled — hails from The
New Adventures of Old Christine creator Kari Lizer. This one will partner Glee alum Jane Lynch and former Sons of Anarchy star Katey Sagal, with the two playing best friends who are both therapists. “Ginger (Sagal) and Jill (Lynch) have always been a team as opposites that work best together,” reads the synopsis. “As they sort their past and look toward their future, they’ll discover that in spite of it all, they wouldn’t change a thing.”
These join a roster of six previously ordered NBC pilots: an untitled single-camera comedy focused on a private detective, from Brooklyn Nine-Nine writers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici; a reboot of The Rockford Files, starring David Boreanaz; What the Dead Know, a Dick Wolf-produced drama about a death investigator; Puzzled, a procedural crime drama about a star athlete who suffers a brain injury that somehow makes him a super-sleuth; Protection, created by Josh Safran and Today host Jenna Bush Hager, about a law enforcement family targeted by a mysterious assassin; and a yet-to-be-titled crime drama from Quantum Leap exec producer Dean Georgaris
Jamie Lee Curtis is the executive producer of Newlyweds, one of eight new pilots ordered by NBC for the 2026-’27 TV season.
DIGGING INTO THE VAULT
Fred Armisen is best known for his work within the comedy milieu, thanks to his 11-season run on Saturday Night Live — to say nothing of his hilarious work on the Documentary Now! parody series and all those seasons of Portlandia.
However, fans of Late Night With Seth Meyers have also gotten to know Armisen’s musical side, thanks to the decade he spent as that show’s bandleader. Armisen, in fact, is a talented musician (he once played drums for punk band Trenchmouth), and his latest gig will find him bring his love and knowledge of music to television, courtesy of an upcoming CNN series in which he’ll delve into the hallowed vaults of Universal Music Group (UMG), which form the world’s largest musical archive.
Armisen will guide viewers through an exploration of pivotal moments in pop culture, focusing on the stories of the iconic artists and songwriters who changed the course of history. As CNN points out, UMG’s archives include a massive,
BACK TO HOGWARTS
highly secure vault within the Iron Mountain facility in Boyers, Pennsylvania, located 220 feet underground in a former limestone mine. From there, Armisen will “unearth priceless artifacts, encompassing original recordings, master tapes, rare photos and performances, alternative album art and music videos,” much of which will be seen publicly for the first tim.
“I’m honoured and I can’t wait to get started with this project,” Armisen said. “I want to move into that vault! I hope we get to dive in, deeper and deeper, into these recordings. And I also want to say that to Universal Music Group that whenever you put out boxed sets with the demos and everything on them, I buy all of it! For real, I buy the LPs and CDs, because I want both collections. I’m really honoured, and thank you so much for having me — I can’t wait to get started.” Added CNN’s Amy Entelis, “This series opens the doors to one of the most extraordinary music archives in the world, and Fred Armisen is the perfect guide.”
As HBO’s long-awaited Harry Potter series continues to shape up — a premiere date in early 2027 is currently anticipated — more information is flowing out. The big news in recent weeks has been the casting of John Lithgow as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore. “I’m the oldest person in this entire room, just turned 80. And yet I signed a contract — I will be playing Dumbledore for the next eight years!” Lithgow quipped at the Rotterdam Film Festival. “I felt: ‘Wow! That means I will live to be 88.’ I have that in writing.”
In addition to Lithgow and the young unknowns cast as Harry and his pals, the adult cast includes Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape,
Nick Frost as Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Louise Brealey as Rolanda Hooch, Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bertie Carvel as Minister Cornelius Fudge, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch.
“The scope of the production, the detail, meticulousness of what they’re going through and what they’ve built takes theatrical to just a whole different level,” said Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO and president of global streaming, JB Perrette, who added, “I really think this is the streaming event of the decade.”
Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Mickey Haller faces his most intense battle yet in the fourth season of The Lincoln Lawyer
ON
JUSTICE F
OR THE BRIEFEST OF MOMENTS everything in Mickey Haller’s (Manuel García-Rulfo) life was coming up roses. The criminal defense lawyer had reached a settlement with the City of Los Angeles, and proved his client’s innocence in the murder of prostitute and informant Gloria “Glory Days” Dayton (Fiona Rene). But the celebrations ended prematurely as Mickey was pulled over by a police officer who discovered the body of former client Sam Scales (Christopher Thornton) in his trunk.
JUSTICE
WHEELS
The fourth season of The Lincoln Lawyer finds Micey in a correctional facility, awaiting his own murder trial. Based on the sixth book in Michael Connelly’s book series, the events of The Law of Innocence were the logical place to take the character to top the stakes of the three previous seasons. “Season one was an emotional redemption story, and season two was a guy who gets his life back and then flies a little too close to the sun and gets knocked down,” says showrunner Ted Humphrey. “Season three was about the ghosts of the past reaching out to haunt him, and it felt like, after everything we’d taken him through in those three seasons, the inevitable next step was this — that all of the forces, all the enemies he’d made would find a ay to bring him down once and for all.”
Forced to gear up for the fiht of his life, we find Micey in “a very low place,” according to Humphrey. “He is trying to put on a very brave face for his team and his family — and even really for himself — but the last moments of the fist episode tear off the mask and shw you where he really is, which is desperate,” he says. For the writer, it was an opportunity to explore how those that are incarcerated create emotional barriers to protect their loved ones. “We talked a lot about how you put on a brave face for your family,” says Humphrey. “His daughter looks up to him and they have a very special relationship. She and his ex-wife are the most important people in his life, right? But with Maggie (Neve Campbell), there are no secrets between them, especially given what

she does for a living. And there’s no fooling her. She knows the truth. But he doesn’t want his daughter to think that she’s going to lose her father.”
Mickey’s legal troubles are also felt in the office, where newly minted lawyer Lorna (Becki Newton) is trying to hold the fort in her boss’ absence. “Just when she starts to come into her own and spread her wings, suddenly Lorna’s slapped with the responsibility of not only trying to help defend her mentor and best friend — ex-husband even — but also trying to keep the wheels turning and the lights on in the office,” says Humphrey. “It’s too much for anybody, but it’s especially too much for somebody who’s just getting their feet wet. She reaches out for help and that’s a huge turning point in the season.”
Neve Campbell rejoins the show as a series regular in the fourth season,
L-R:
Mickey Haller (Manuel García-Rulfo), Lorna Crane (Becki Newton) and new addition Dana Berg (Constance Zimmer), described as “arguably the most formidable antagonist” Mickey has ever faced.
just when Mickey needs Maggie the most. “Maggie, more than anybody else, knows just how dire this is. And, just like he does, she’s got to worry about their daughter and what it’s going to do for her, so it affects her very deeply,” says Humphrey. “But, also, she loves Mickey and she cares about him even though they’re not together. They’ll always love each other. So emotionally, she’s got to get closer to him in order to help see him through this. How that plays out will obviously be a big part of the story. The relationship between Mickey and Maggie is the beating heart of our show.”
A favourite element of Humphrey’s is watching Mickey’s ex-wives work together for the man they once loved. “You have two ex-wives of the same man who, logic would tell you, might not get along so well. In season one, it’s not that they’re enemies, but you can see Lorna’s quite intimidated by Maggie, and Maggie is maybe put off y Lorna still,” says Humphrey. “Over the course of the seasons, we’ve developed that relationship, and it takes a very big step forward this season, because even though they may have their differences, they both have to work together to help this person that they both care
about very deeply and it matters very much to them.”
Their ability to work as a team becomes all the more important when faced with deputy district attorney
“Death Row Dana” Berg, played by House of Cards star Constance Zimmer. “In the Mickey Haller universe, Dana Berg is arguably the most formidable antagonist he ever faces, so we knew that we needed somebody who would bring all of that to life,” says Humphrey. “We were very fortunate that Constance wanted to come play in our sandbox. She, of course, did not disappoint. She’s an incredible foil for everybody.”
While Humphrey has largely followed the order of Connelly’s books, the characters in the series, outside of Mickey Haller, are far more fleshed out than in the nvels.
“There’s nothing in the books that is non-negotiable,” says Humphrey. “Michael is so collaborative. When we fist started doing the show, you

could imagine it was slightly daunting to work with the author of the books because you don’t quite know what you’re getting yourself into. I’ve had other adaptation situations where authors are very precious about their work, and Michael is not.” In fact, Connelly is the fist person to say something can be improved upon in the series version of his stories.
“There are certain things in the books that go to the core values of the characters that I think are non-negotiable, because that’s who Mickey Haller is, but we change and expand a lot of things throughout the show,” says Humphrey.
They’ll always love each other. So emotionally, she’s got to get closer to him in order to help see him through this. How that plays out will obviously be a big part of the story. The relationship between Mickey and Maggie is the beating heart of our show.”
“Michael always says that it’s great for him and his readers because they go, ‘Oh, I know what this is.’ But it’s also different enough and surprising, that they can enjoy it all over again.”

HEN LAURA DAVE
WROTE her thriller
The Last Thing He Told Me, she didn’t realize she had created the ultimate cliffhaner. It was only after the Apple TV series, adapted from her novel by Dave and her husband Josh Singer, that fans started asking what comes next.
“I started hearing from people how much excitement there was for a season two,” says Dave.
While the author had no hesitation about revisiting California artisan Hannah Hall (Jennifer Garner) and her stepdaughter Bailey Michaels (Angourie Rice), currently laying low from the people threatening the life of Hannah’s missing husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), the process of bringing the continuation of their journey to the screen was a far cry from the fist go-round, which took the author 10 solitary years. “[This time] I sat down and wrote the fist hundred

pages. I shared them with [Hello Sunshine executive producer] Lauren [Neustadter], I shared them with Josh, I shared them with Jen [Garner]. And we decided that this was going to be the next chapter for Hannah,” she says.
The story picks up from where it left off, fie years after Owen went on the run, leaving his wife and daughter to fend for their own safety. As we saw in the finale of the first season, Owen had a brief clandestine encounter with Hannah, but it was Bailey calling Hannah “Mom” that was the real emotional beat of the scene. This was how Dave determined where to start their next chapter. “The beating heart of this show is the relationship between Hannah and Bailey,” says Dave. “I wanted to meet them at a time in their future where they had managed to save each other. And regardless of what was going to happen
with Hannah’s husband and Bailey’s father, they were a self-contained, happy unit because they managed to become the hero of their own lives.”
The true hero of the series is, of course, Hannah, who this season takes charge of the situation in ways we have come to expect from the former Alias star. “In the fist season, she’s very reactive. She’s never a victim, and she always has a real purpose and mission, but I think the fie-year jump allows her to really know where she is and we’re shifting into a new gear,” says Neustadter. What hasn’t changed is the way Hannah continues to be the grownup in the room. “Have you heard of this term, ‘competency porn’?” asks Garner. “Hannah does that for me. She has prepared everything for every eventuality, all to keep Bailey safe. Watching the penny drop, where Hannah realizes the kind of danger they’re in, and watching her take one step after the other and include Bailey in this grand escape is, to me, really, really gratifying.”

But no amount of preparation readies them for the impact of absentee Owen, when he finally maes his return. For Coster-Waldau, digging deeper into the motivations of his character was the true draw of the season. “In the fist season, more or less everything with Owen is through the other characters’ memories, and you know how sometimes your memory, you can’t trust it,” says the Game of Thrones actor. “What was exciting for me in this season is that you see him through his eyes, if that makes any sense. And also, Laura said that she had a whole story written out about what Owen did [throughout the fist season], and I’m very curious about where he went.”
The Last Thing universe expands this season, with two new characters that offer more insight into our three leads. Rita Wilson joins as Hannah’s mother Carol. “As you know from the Quinn Campano books, Hannah and her mother are estranged and Hannah
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau returns as Owen Michaels, whose disappearance in the first season changed everything.
goes to see Carol as a last resort,” says Singer. “They have a lot to work out, just as Hannah and Owen will have a lot to work out. So, we thought there was a real opportunity there.” Judy Greer plays Quinn Campano, the daughter of the man hunting Owen. “Quinn was quite close to Bailey’s mother, so she and Bailey wind up having this long conversation over the course of the season about who Bailey’s mother was,” says Singer. “What I loved about [casting Greer] was it was something that we hadn’t seen Judy do. She gets pigeonholed as a comic actress, but her drama chops are fantastic. There are a couple scenes that are shot in Paris with Judy and Jen that are, I think, among the best things we’ve done.”
Even as the cast grows in numbers, there is no question about which relationship fans want to see more of. The second season is an opportunity to demonstrate how Hannah and Bailey’s relationship has deepened, but also how it changes when a child becomes more of a peer. “In season one, she’s 16, and in season two, she’s 21, 22, and that changes your relationship with your parents,” says Rice. “For Bailey, a lot of season two is realizing that your parents are also just people. She has to come to terms with Owen and the decisions he made. And, also, exploring the history with her biological mother, there’s kind of a disillusionment there, but also a deeper understanding of her relationships with her mom and dad,
and I loved exploring that.”
While the narrative goal is to pull Hannah and Bailey apart, one of Garner’s favourite memories from the second season is a scene that demonstrates how close they have grown. “We’re on the run, and we have this night where we are sleeping together in our car,” she says. “We shot it on a beach in Malibu, and it was really cold, and so we were actually really snuggled up, and it was just so dear to think of how far these characters had come.” In fact, it’s that unbearable threat of separation that creates the greatest tension of all. “Over fie years, Hannah and Bailey have worked so hard to find stabiliy and a routine,” says Rice. “When that’s all thrown into the air, they have to figue out how to be in a crisis together. The last time they were in a crisis together, it brought them closer, but there was a lot of tension along the way. So, the stakes are very high.”
The beating heart of this show is the relationship between Hannah and Bailey,” says Dave. “I wanted to meet them at a time in their future where they had managed to save each other.”
Judy Greer has joined the cast as Quinn Campano, daughter of the man on the hunt for Hannah’s husband.
The supernatural situation gets weirder teens in season three of School Spirits
SPIRITED AWAY
HIGH SCHOOL IS A DEATH TRAP.
No one sees that more clearly than Oliver Goldstick, the executive producer of high school murder mysteries Pretty Little Liars and School Spirits. “The stakes are high. People are trying on identities. Their secrets feel so huge,” he says. “You look back and go, ‘The exposure of that secret would’ve killed me.’ You know what? It wouldn’t have. You would have survived, but it doesn’t feel like that when you’re living it.”
L-R: Wally Clark (Milo Manheim), Yuri (Miles Elliot) and teacher Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) witness some supernatural shenanigans.

SPIRITED
High school is also a time when you are dying to be acknowledged, while simultaneously praying you don’t stand out. “What I loved about what [School Spirits series and graphic novel creators] Nate [Trinrud], Megan [Trinrud] and I had discussed about the source material was that it was a girl who pinballs between wanting to be seen and not be seen,” says Goldstick. “Because of an alcoholic parent, she didn’t want people at school asking too many questions. She didn’t want people noticing her on many days. I thought, we don’t write about this a lot from a young person’s point of view, but there are many young people parenting their parents.”
Goldstick isn’t the only one who believes School Spirits transcends the mystery genre. On the surface, the series follows teenage student Maddie (Peyton List), who in season one discovers that she has joined a group of spirits at her high school, but, unlike the other ghosts that roam the corridors of Split River High

School, Maddie can’t remember how she died. To help her understand who murdered her, she enlists undead students Charley (Nick Pugliese), Rhonda (Sarah Yarkin), Wally (Milo Manheim) and science teacher Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman), in turn helping them figue out why they still linger in this place between Earth and a final esting place. “To me, the show is about trauma,” says Manheim. “It is about how unfinished business can really weigh on you heavily, and you have to deal with it to move forward. It’s crazy that the creators have taken a show with that as the message and created such a fun, oftentimes nostalgic-feeling show.”

clearly something holding Wally back. “Although Wally and Maddie really haven’t known each other for that long, considering he has known other people for 40 years in the afterlife, I think he cares more for her than anything in his life or death,” says Manheim. “And there are things that he needs to help her figue out.”
Having worked so hard for a return to normal, Maddie now finds herself overwhelmed. First, she needs to deal with the consequences of having body-swapped with 1950s student Janet (Jess Gabor), who last season wreaked havoc in modern day Split River. “There was the police investigation and a number of questions about Maddie’s absence — which got so messed up once Janet was interviewed,” says Goldstick. And then there is the emotional toll of returning home. “It was supposed to be this thing she wanted so badly,” says List. “And when she finally ets it, she realizes how much she’s fallen in love with all of these people she’s had to leave behind.”
The ghost crew certainly isn’t ready to say goodbye to their new friend. “Maddie arriving to the afterlife just made things click that hadn’t clicked for up to 60 years, in every single character,” says Manheim. “Wally did not change very much from the day he died to when Maddie joins us on that side. And then, within a really short amount of time, he does what feels like an eternity of growing just because of her being there.” Lucky for them, the biggest mystery of all is far from being solved.
It’s a storyline that deviates from the source material. In fact, Maddie’s homecoming at the end of the second season could easily have offered the closure viewers were looking for. “We could have ended it there,” concedes Goldstick. “The graphic novel never explored the mythology of the school.” But why close the book when there are still so many questions left unanswered? “‘What’s

going on with this school?’ came up in the writer’s room multiple times. Why are so many kids dying here?” says Goldstick. “We had talked about whether there is mythology to the school we want to explore. This was the season we could do that, because last season was so much about getting Maddie’s body back, which was enough of a concept for people to wrap their heads around.”
The new season promises lots of intrigue about the origins of Split River and its effect on its people. Somehow, as Maddie returns to the living, her best friend Simon (Kristian Ventura) has ended up on the other side — but we know he isn’t dead, so why is he there? And Maddie’s ex-boyfriend Xavier (Spencer MacPherson) finds himself forging a bond between Maddie and a deceased loved one. “In season one, we met someone that was selfish and a bit lost, and through his near-death experience, and his eyes opening to this other world in season two, it’s as though he’s become someone that’s found purpose,” says MacPherson.
The Canadian actor also subscribes to the fact that School Spirits is not really a whodunit. “I would say this

show is about things not being what they seem,” says MacPherson. “Our characters, they’re all presenting one way, and they’re revealed to have hidden depth.” It is that sleight of hand that continues to thrill Goldstick, especially within this genre. “You fall in love with people you didn’t expect to root for,” he says. “We love the idea of layers, where every couple of episodes, you change lanes and the audience goes, ‘Wait, what’s their story?’ It’s a lot of fun to write that.”

STARRING Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Isabel May, Mason Gooding, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Jasmin Savoy Brown
Back in 2022, Neve Campbell famously turned down a starring role in Scream 6 due to a salary dispute. “I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to thi franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years,” she declared at the time. Those issues have been worked out, and she’s back for the latest sequel to the clever slasher franchise that began way back in 1996. This time, Campbell’s Sidney Prescott has seemingly escaped all the traumatic murder from the previous movies, building a quiet new life for herself in the bucolic town of Pine Grove, Indiana. Or so she thought — when a new Ghostface killer begins to target her daughter Tatum (Isabel May), Syd is forced to confront her past in order to end the killings once and for all. “I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades,” Campbell told Entertainment Tonight of her return to the fold.

Q
A LAST WORD THE
Q
Season one was such a taut pressure cooker, contained inside the bunker. In season two, as Xavier ventures to the wasteland above, does it feel like a bit of a different sho, with a different rhythm, scope and focus?
A
Very much so. That is an interesting echo — as Xavier is stepping into the unknown, so is the show. He’s representative of the audience in that way. I think we get a chance to get the best of both worlds, because by the time we get to episode three and refocus on what’s been happening in the bunker, it’s deeply satisfying to be like, “Alright, you’ve introduced me to these new people. That was cool. Now, tell me what’s going on with Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson). What’s going on with Dr. Torabi (Sarah Shahi)?”
Hopefully, the audience will feel they get the cake and eat it too. They’re getting something new, while still getting a chance to be connected to what they knew from before.
Q The situation we find on the surfac, perilous as it may be, is not a Mad Max scenario. A lot of the
Sterling K. Brown
show’s time up there is more about small, intimate character moments. What unique opportunities does a post-apocalypse offer for a character study?
A I think it was always [creator Dan Fogelman’s] intention to show a world that was not just fallen into utter chaos, but more focused on the tendency of humanity to take vs. share, in dire moments. Like, “Am I the kind of person that’s going to take everything I need for me, myself and mine? Or am I the kind of person that is looking to form community, to be in relationship to people — recognizing that there is a greater outcome if we work in tandem rather than alone?”
You see Xavier, the fist community that he finds is a ommunity of children — and that
I think the show is very positive in terms of, ultimately, at its core, people want to be of service to other people. I would like to believe that.”
they are ultimately survivors. Is their situation ideal? No, but they are better because they are looking out for each other and have somebody else to rely on other than themselves. The next thing he comes in contact with are men who are looking to take advantage of those children. They are people who are takers, inherently. So, you see Xavier being protective of these children and recognizing that if he does not act quickly and extremely, these children’s lives will be in danger. I think that’s a mini-encapsulation of what we fin throughout his exploration above — the people who are there to share, the people who are there to take.
And in meeting Annie (Shailene Woodley), you see someone who is there for themself, but desperately wants to be in community . . . but is too afraid to take that step. She says, “Look, Xavier, you haven’t experienced this. For the past three years, things have been crazy. People have been doing gnarly s***.” And Xavier is trying to say to her, “Yes — and I think there are enough people who are still here that, when we need them, their innate desire is to help.”
It asks a really interesting question: “What is the nature of man?” And maybe it’s not universal. This is Brown speaking right now, not necessarily on behalf of the show — I think the show is very positive in terms of, ultimately, at its core, people want to be of service to other people. I would like to believe that. And if that’s not true, I’m proud to be part of a show that’s putting that message into the world — because it should be true.
Q When it came to Annie, this grizzled survivor, how important was it to cast not just a great actor, but someone with Shailene’s movie-star presence? Because early on, she needs to anchor her own storyline separate from the rest of the cast.
A We needed a beast, bro. And we got a beast. Shai is outstanding. You see how she is as an actor — she’s that way as a person, too. She’s got two feet firmly planted on the ground. She’s strong. She’s powerful. The way she moves through the world is like, “Oh, this girl, she don’t take no mess.” She was perfect. The fist episode, Annie is holding that s*** down. And it wouldn’t have worked with a lesser-calibre performer. We were blessed that she said yes.
Q Your previous show with Dan Fogelman, This Is Us, also employed a flashback structure, interweaving timelines. But does Paradise feel different, given that you’re working with such a focused, three-season plan with fewer episodes each year?
A It is interesting. We did 18 [episodes per season] on This Is Us. And it still felt like it had a certain level of focus, because Dan had only intended six seasons from the beginning. We did six seasons, and people from the network and the studio were like, “You sure you don’t want to go longer?” No. He felt like he had told the story he wanted to tell. I appreciate his artistic integrity in that.
CURRENT GIG
When the planet is felled by a simultaneous environmental/ nuclear apocalypse, a cabal of billionaires and politicians scheme to craft a high-tech bunker city where a chosen few can weather the fallout. Season one of Paradise found Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) digging into the murder of the president (James Marsden), leading to the revelation that the surface was actually survivable . . . and propelling Xavier on a season-two mission into the wasteland above to find the wife Enuka Okuma) he thought he’d lost.
I feel like we have the same level of focus here; it may even be more so, just because it’s eight episodes, it’s three seasons — so the crucible has been shrunken. Each episode propels the story forward in an even more robust way than probably This Is Us did. The show has a musculature to it that wasn’t an inherent part of This Is Us, because it’s supposed to have you on the edge of your seat. This Is Us was not a thriller in the same sort of way that Paradise is.
QAs a producer, were there any pitfalls you were conscious to avoid in telling this kind of story?
A Look, there are always going to be things that are evocative of post-apocalyptic [films and shws that already exist] — whether it’s The Road or The Last of Us. You want to make sure that you’re telling your version. Will there be overlap? Of course. Everybody’s dealing with the end of the world, so there are going to be similarities. There should also be key differences. You just want to make sure you’re not doing what somebody else has done . . . that you have your own, very strong stamp on how it gets done.
QThis series has always been about power and power dynamics — between the billionaires and
MEMORABLE ROLES
An actor of unique and profound power, Sterling K. Brown is a 12-time Emmy nominee, three-time winner who rose to acclaim in the mid-2010s with the dual, zeitgeist-grabbing successes of The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and This Is Us.
He’s furthermore distinguished himself on the small screen via standout performances on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Washington Black, and with hit films like Black Panther, Waves, Frozen 2 and an Oscar-nominated turn in American Fiction.
Currently unrolling weekly on Disney+, Paradise finds Brow pulling double duty as leading man and executive producer. It also marks a reunion with his This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman.
politicians who built the bunker and the average folks like Xavier who were allowed in, plus the folks left to rot above. How does the show’s outlook on power evolve this year?
A Oooh, that’s a good one! One of the big things that season two introduces is [the mysterious entity called] “Alex.” Who/what is Alex? And the idea that “it was never just about the bunker.”
Now the outside and the inside are coming into confrontation with one another. Who actually is in power? Who is more powerful in this particular dynamic? Power dynamics are constantly shifting . . . but at the end of the day, the question of “Who is Alex?” is going to override how we think about power. And remember I said that when you get to episode eight [the season finale], because ou’ll see what I’m talking about.
QPresident Cal (James Marsden) is still around this season via the flashbacs. Xavier blamed Cal for his wife’s death, but near the end of season one, X learned that Cal actually set off an electromagnetic puls, which allowed Teri and everyone else on the surface to have a fighting chance at survival. Has he inched closer to forgiveness?
A I think so. I would talk to friends of mine who watched season one and by the time they got to episode seven, they’re like, “Hey man, you gotta stop giving the president a hard time! He’s got difficult decision” And I think now that Xavier has even more insight, knows that the president used the EMP to save humanity, even though it meant that we in the bunker would be in the dark [unable to surveil the world above], there is a level of empathy for the rock and the hard place that he was placed in between, and having to make a decision.
There’s a definite softening — and then ou’ll even see into season three there’s an interesting continuing of the relationship between Cal and Xavier. Obviously, not in real-time . . . but you’ll see.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
