EDITOR’S NOTE
A BEATLE FINDS HIS WINGS IN ROCK DOC
Iwill admit to being a sucker for a good music documentary, and that’s especially true if it features The Beatles. There have been some great ones recently — including the Martin Scorsese-produced Beatles 64, Peter Jackson’s Get Back and his remastered version of The Beatles Anthology — and this week brings us Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, a deep dive into the post-Beatles life of Paul McCartney
Directed by acclaimed filmmaer Morgan Neville (whose credits include 20 Feet From Stardom, Won’t You Be My Neighbor and Keith Richards: Under the Influenc ), Man on the Run begins with The Beatles’ bitter breakup, a period when McCartney was at a low ebb. “The Beatles had been my whole life, really,” he says in the film. “When e split up, I thought I’ll never write another note of music ever. I had fear of being a grown-up. I felt very depressed, but I was very lucky because I had Linda.”
McCartney, then recently married, credits his wife for pulling him out of his doldrums by encourging him to record his DIY debut solo album, McCartney, and then collaborating with him on the follow-up, Ram — which, Man on the Run reminds, was savaged by critics in ’71 but has gone on to be considered a masterpiece.
Recording Ram led McCartney to assemble a new band, dubbed Wings, featuring former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine on guitar and — most controversially — Linda on keyboards, an instrument she was still learning to play.
FRIDAY,
The band’s fist album, Wild Life, was far from McCartney’s finest moment. “ings was a dud when it’d fist come out,” says McCartney, recalling his determination to prove the naysayers wrong. “If anybody badmouthed us, I was thinking, ‘I’m going to make the best record you’ve ever heard,’” he declared. He made good on that promise in 1973, with the one-two punch of his stirring 007 theme “Live and Let Die,” followed by Wings’ third album, Band on the Run, a massive hit crammed with classics.
Man on the Run offers a cavalcade of rare archival footage; what it doesn’t, though, is much new insight into its subject. Elusive and media-savvy, McCartney once again demonstrates his mastery at appearing open and affable while playing his cards close to the vest.

LAW & ORDER
The latest from Dick Wolf (whose television pantheon includes the Law & Order, Chicago and FBI franchises) is this procedural crime drama in which rule-breaking, roguish CIA case officer Colin Glass Lucifer’s Tom Ellis) is reluctantly partnered with straight-arrow, by-the-book FBI agent Bill Goodman (Chicago Med’s Nick Gehlfuss). When a top-secret weapon is stolen in broad daylight, Goodman is loaned out to a clandestine FBI/CIA task force, with the two very different lawmen initially at odds as their respective styles of crimefighting clash.
“Together they will work covert operations in New York, uncovering international plots, terrorist cells and geopolitical secrets,” declares the CBS logline. “On CIA, Bill will learn the rules of this murky world on the fly as Colin leads him deeper into spy games where only one thing is clear — their work keeps America safe, even if no one will ever know what they did in the shadows.”

Unlikely soccer coach
I remember reading about a potential new season of Ted Lasso. Is that still happening?
—T.K., Vancouver
Not only has a fourth season of Ted Lasso been greenlit, the new episodes of this beloved British soccer comedy are currently in production, and will arrive in the summer. As viewers will recall, season three ended on a definitive not, with the titular Ted (Jason Sudeikis) returning to the U.S. This new chapter sees him head back to London for a new gig. “In season four, Ted returns to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team,” the official logline reads. “Throughout the course o the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.”
More Beef, Fresh Cast
I read awhile back that Steven Yeun and Ali Wong were going to be returning for a second season of Beef. Is that still the plan?
—R.S., Surrey
You’re partially correct. Netflixs dark satire — about a road-rage incident that kicks off an epic feud between two strangers — will return, but stars Wong and Yeun will not.
That’s because Beef has become an anthology series, with each season introducing a new story with a new cast.
In the second season, recently engaged Ashley Miller (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin Davis (Charles Melton) are pitted against their boss, Joshua Martín (Oscar Isaac), and his spouse, Lindsay Crane-Martín (Carey Mulligan), after a fateful encounter “triggers chess moves and manipulations that ripple far beyond the country club where they work.”
According to creator Lee Sung Jin, he’d always intended the show as an anthology, and saw an opportunity to take the concept in a whole new direction with the second season by positioning a millennial couple against their younger Gen Z counterparts. “We thought, ‘What if we actually made them a little bit closer in age and highlight that generational divide?’ ” the writer explained in a chat with Tudum, elaborating that this new chapter is “more about the internal repression of rage that you see in the workplace.”
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) will make his long-awaited comeback to Apple TV this summer.

Lowdown on The Lowdown
The Lowdown was one of the best shows I saw last year. Please tell me it’s coming back!
—M.C., Victoria
You are in luck. After getting rave reviews from critics, The Lowdown has been renewed for a second season. According to Variety, production is scheduled to take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, later this spring.
Created by Sterlin
Billy Jack, starring Tom Laughlin, was one of the best movies I had ever seen during my younger years. Was he of First Nations heritage? I seem to recall that he was.
–C.L., via email
To cut to the chase, no, the Billy Jack star was not an Indigenous person, but rather was born of Irish descent on his father’s side, and of Scottish on his mother’s.
The character he played in the 1971 movie was that of a “half-breed” (in the dated language of the film) who used the skills he’d picked up as a former Green Beret to help the downtrodden fight back against the establishment — particularly when it came to damaging the environment, and the cruel and inhumane treatment of horses and livestock. Laughlin, who also directed Billy Jack, co-wrote the script with his wife, Delores Taylor, who also co-starred.
The initial reaction to the film wa
Harjo (maker of acclaimed comedy Reservation Dogs), The Lowdown focuses on “truthstorian” Lee Raybon (played by Ethan Hawke), a snoopy investigative reporter whose dogged pursuit of a story usually places him in harm’s way. In the firs season, Lee’s deep dive into a wealthy family uncovered a shady conspiracy with farreaching consequences.
As Hawke mused of his character in a talk with The Hollywood Reporter: “I love characters like Don Quixote — people who have a grand dream and a tremendous
dismal, and it failed at the box offi. Chalking that up to a poor distribution agreement, Laughlin took charge of that part of the process, and by 1973 managed to re-release it in theatres. That strategy wound up generating US$98 million — pretty impressive for a movie that cost only US$360,000 to produce.
Interestingly, Billy Jack was the second in a series that began with 1967’s The Born Losers, with 1974’s The Trial of Billy Jack the franchise’s third pic. The fourth, 1977’s Billy Jack Goes to Washington, had such a limited release that even fans of the films have liely never heard of it. Another entry, The Return of Billy Jack, ran out of money and was never completed.
amount of blind spots. It’s just ripe for humanity. We’re all like that in some way. John Steinbeck gets to write a great novel, and we all love him for it — well, he disappeared from his family for five years to write it. H didn’t show up for anybody’s soccer games or do anything else but that . . . [Lee is] so multi-dimensional. He’s so many things at one time. It makes it funny, and he’s earnest, and he’s a liar and he’s a truth-teller — it’s fun.”
While there may have been an assumption that The Lowdown would be a limited
series, Harjo told THR that he’d always conceived of this quirky neo-noir running for multiple instalments. “I’ve thought about many seasons of this show,” he said. “I’ve thought about other projects — there was always an idea of going deeper into Oklahoma and some of these relationships that Lee has made in the first season”
While Harjo is keeping mum on the new season’s storyline, he did add: “I have ideas. I was telling somebody, The Rockford Files did it every episode. We could do every season.”

An Emmy winner for This Is Us in 2017, last year Sterling K. Brown reunited with creator Dan Fogelman for another timejumping series — with another highly compelling twist at the end of episode one.
Paradise introduced us to a bright, shiny, high-tech city where Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Brown) led the security detail of a president (James Marsden) he despised. The premiere opened with Xavier finding tht president murdered, and it closed with the reveal that this was no ordinary city. Rather, it was a massive underground bunker where a select few survivors had fled to void an environmental catastrophe that devastated the planet. As our hero dug into POTUS’s death, a conspiracy unravelled, leading to the revelation that the cabal of billionaires who’d built this “Paradise” were covering up the fact that the world above was survivable — and what’s more,

Season two opens to find Xavier venturing up into the wasteland, where he encounters a young woman named Annie (Big Little Lies’ Shailene Woodley), with whom he forges an uneasy partnership as he begins the search for his spouse. Meanwhile, back in the bunker, a power struggle is brewing, as the sins of Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) and Paradise’s all-powerful creators finally ctch up to them. Despite his character’s death, expect a few more flashbck appearances by Marsden who — like Brown and Nicholson — earned himself an Emmy nomination for season one.

MONSTER MASH-UP!
Apple’s small-screen expansion of the big-screen Godzilla universe returns for season two. But this time, the giant lizard takes a backseat to his frequent frenemy King Kong, who gives the valiant rogues of the kaiju-tracking Monarch agency all they can handle.
Once again, the cast is led by Shōgun Emmy winner Anna Sawai, whose character Cate Randa just barely escaped the depths of the Hollow Earth dimension at the end of last season, alongside her long-missing grandmother, Monarch co-founder Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) — a woman who, because of the temporal displacement, is only a few years older than her granddaughter. That makes for a tricky adjustment to life back in the real world, especially given that Cate’s half-brother Kentaro (Ren Watabe) and estranged dad Hiroshi (Takehiro Hira) have been living, working and bonding for years without them. What’s more, the Monarch to which they return is under assault from corporate interests less concerned about containing behemoths like Godzilla and Kong than in exploiting them for a profit
Of course, one of this show’s uniquely compelling pleasures in season one was watching father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell play the older and younger versions of era-straddling soldier Lee Shaw. While the elder version of Shaw ended season one with his fate up in the air, we can tease that Kurt Russell still has a role to play in this ongoing Legacy

The Cost of Victory
The Game of Thrones prequel reaches its end. Ser Duncan the Tall emerged victorious from last week’s brutal melee, but the emotional and physical devastation will have profound consequences for our hero, and for the Seven Kingdoms as a whole. As Dunk is presented with several compelling options for the future by allies and enemies alike, he’ll need to ponder where the truly honourable path lies. Fans can rest assured, season two is already in the works.

Daddy’s Home!
Aweek after Family Guy’s latest season premiere, creator/star Seth MacFarlane’s other animated sitcom returns to the airwaves. And, indeed, it marks yet another intriguing twist in American Dad!’s now 20-season run.
Debuting on Fox in 2005, the show about gung-ho CIA agent Stan Smith, his dysfunctional family and snarky Area 51 alien sidekick Roger always languished in the shadow of Peter Griffin al. — yet has nonetheless quietly built itself a cultishly adoring fanbase. First cancelled by Fox in 2013, it was swiftly picked up by U.S. cable network TBS, where it continued airing till March of 2025. At that point, TBS cancelled it, but — in a nigh-unprecedented
move — original network Fox swooped in to take the show back, ordering not one, not three, but four more seasons!
That’s a testament to what a loving following the show has built up among viewers who appreciate its sharp wit, delightful absurdity and boundless creativity . . . even if those fans can be a tad fickl. As writer Nic Wegener told Collider: “The fans keep us humble, because I started on season nine . . . and every season we’ve
written, when it airs, I go and read, and they’re like, ‘Well . . . it sucks now.’ And then, a couple of years later, you look back and they’ll be like, ‘This season sucks. Season 12 was the height!’ And I was like, ‘Wait, I remember you guys said season 12 sucked, too, when it came out.’”
The fist episode of this new Fox run debuts Sunday. The synopsis reads: “The Smiths are having a pool party! Everyone is coming, including Francine’s sister and Steve’s ex! Wait, is that a dead rat in the pool?”

WHAT’S UP, DOCS?
For the most part, over the course of TV history, hospitals have been the setting for gritty, serious dramas. One delightful deviation from that trend? A sitcom dubbed Scrubs, which aired from 2001-2010 on NBC (the first seven seasons) and ABC (the final two). Defined by its endlessly inventive fantas sequences, the series followed the exploits of quirky rookie doctors cutting their teeth at L.A.’s Sacred Heart Hospital.
Now, after over a decade, the hijinks return with this ABC reboot, as doctors J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison), Elliot (Canadian Sarah Chalke) et al. scrub back in — all now at different phases of their lives and careers, but still very much th lovable doofuses we remember from days of yore. (And indeed, most of the original cast will return for at least a guest spot.)
The show was always adept at balancing its over-the-top humour with moments of genuine heartbreak; and, per reports, the aim for this reboot is to recapture the slightly more grounded tone of season one.
Check back soon for TV Week’s chat with Sarah Chalke, who tells us all about this B.C.-shot reboot.

Meanwhile, the key to the series’ appeal lies in the odd-couple dynamic between Morgan and Radcliffe — and for Morgan, it’s an undeniable touchdown. “That day I found out Daniel Radcliffe was going to be on my show, I knew we got a hit,” he told EW. “Because me and him are from two different worlds. And we had chemistry automatically.”

Their journey takes them from Greenland to famed “iceberg alley” off the Newfoundland coast, where they celebrate the beauty and resilience of these at-risk ecosystems. “At once an ode to the grandiosity of nature, and a call-to-action to preserve the integrity of our environment, The Berg is a timely and poignant view at an increasingly rare beauty of our world,” notes the synopsis.

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
SINCE STARTING OUT
Mae Day
in the Toronto comedy scene at the age of 13 (part of a comedy troupe called the Young and the Useless), Canada’s own Mae Martin has been on an upward trajectory. After segueing into standup comedy, Martin went on to enjoy an impressive run as a television writer, producer and actor. Winning two Canadian Screen Awards for their work as a writer on Baroness Von Sketch Show, Martin then brought their singular voice to the Netflix dramedy Feel Good. The quasiautobiographical series, in which Martin portrayed a fictionalized Mae Martin, earned critical acclaim and ran for two seasons, with the strength of the material attracting a cast that included Friends alum Lisa Kudrow Martin then released a Netflix comedy special, 2023’s SAP, and last year created, wrote and starred in Netflix limited series Wayward, which also featured Oscar nominee Toni Collette among its cast. Examining the dark secrets buried in a small town in Vermont that contains a school for troubled teens, the show was a massive hit, spending fie consecutive weeks on the Netflix Global op 10 chart.
Given all that success, it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that Netflix is een to undertake further collaborations with the talented multi-hyphenate, who has just signed a fist-look deal with the streamer to develop and create new TV series. In addition, the deal also calls for another standup comedy special.
“Over the last seven years I’ve been lucky to build relationships at Netflix tht have felt supportive and creatively empowering, allowing my stories (and weird jokes about snow globes, etc.) to reach a global audience,” Martin said of the new deal in a statement.
“I’m so grateful to continue that relationship, and this vote of confidene will allow me to elevate other voices as well!”
Martin added. “I can’t wait to show everyone what I’ve been cooking up.”
“Mae is a singular voice who brings a rare combination of originality and curiosity to everything they do,” added Danielle Woodrow, director of content for Netflix anada.
“We were thrilled with the success of Wayward and can’t wait to see what they dream up next.”
Following the success of Wayward, Mae Martin has signed a first-look deal with Netflix to create new TV content for the streamer.
FANNING + FANNING
Elle Fanning has been on a roll lately, hitting the promotional trail for industry events and award show red carpets thanks to her 2025 roles in Predator: Badlands and the Oscar-nominated movie Sentimental Value.
For her next projects, the star of The Great will be teaming up with a familiar figure from her life: older sister Dakota Fanning, recently seen starring opposite Sarah Snook (Succession) in the twist-filled thriller All Her Fault
The Fanning sisters will next be seen together in The Nightingale, a feature film based on the bestselling novel about two sisters in Paris who struggle to survive the Nazi occupation during the Second World War. With that project set for a 2027 release, the siblings have also lined up a few other projects.
One of these is a new, as-yet untitled Apple TV thriller series, with Dakota set to play the lead role as “an undercover Treasury agent in a multibillion-dollar international conglomerate
A PRESUMED RETURN
with world-changing political and criminal tentacles.” The series’ logline goes on to explain that Fanning’s character “becomes conflicted between her mission and a belief that her principal target, the heir apparent to all that corrupt power, is at his core a good man and worthy of her love.”
The series was created by Emmy-winning Homeland producer Alex Cary, and both Dakota and Elle will serve as executive producers (alongside Brittany Kahan Ward) via their joint production company Lewellen Pictures, which the sisters formed back in 2021.
Lewellen Pictures is also producing a Fanningcentric project for Apple TV, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, in which Elle stars as a college student whose affair with a professor leaves her pregnant, and turns to OnlyFans as a means of supporting herself. That series will premiere in April, just one month after Dakota’s film The Sun Never Sets premieres at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
Apple TV has already announced that legal thriller Presumed Innocent will return for a second season — but when it does, expect a switch to an anthology format. Apple TV’s most-watched drama will also be moving away from author Scott Turow’s body of work, which provided the blueprint for the first season
Instead, Jo Murray’s novel, Dissection of a Murder, will serve as source material, with the first seaso’s lead character Rusty Sabich (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) to be replaced by Leila Reynolds, an ambitious defence attorney who takes on a high-profile case as her first murder cas.
While storylines and character details have remained largely under wraps,
Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) is confirmed to b onboard as Leila, and will also serve as executive producer. Matthew Rhys (The Americans) will play her husband, who just happens to be the prosecutor on the case. Courtney B. Vance (61st Street) plays Leila’s boss, while Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) portrays a partner at the firm and Jack Reynor (Midsommar) has been cast as the defendant.
Meanwhile, Ji-young Yoo (KPop Demon Hunters) is confirmed to have a recurring — but as yet unspecified — role in season two, as will John Magaro (The Agency) and Michael Hsu Rosen (Tiny Pretty Things), with the latter reportedly set for a “major” recurring role in the upcoming season.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV
TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

AVE YOU EVER WANTED to dive into your TV screen and land right in the middle of your favourite show? That’s exactly what it feels like to be on location in Fiji for Survivor. The granddaddy of reality TV, Survivor is a thrill to watch from your couch — but standing on a Fijian beach while Colby quietly

strategizes with Rizo? That’s a whole different kind of rush. That’s where I found myself in June 2025, along with a handful of other journalists, as filming kicked off or Survivor 50
To be honest, I was a little nervous going in. I’d been invited to fly out to Fiji, interview the cast and crew, watch the marooning, tour the tribe camps, compete in challenges with the Dream Team, and watch the season’s fist Tribal Council live. For a lifelong Survivor fan, it sounded too good to be true.
But the reality? It didn’t just live up to the hype, it blew it out of the water.
‘‘ I feel like Jeff [Probst] would be proud to turn that parchment over and say my name. I think the fist thing I would do is go up to him and be like, ‘Are you proud of me? Please be proud of me.’ This is his baby and it's a huge responsibility to be here on 50 and I want to make sure I own up to that and I never take that for granted. I think I could die happy.”
- Dee Valladares on the gravity of possibly winning Season
50
Meeting the Cast
My time in Fiji began with cast interviews, held on one of the Mamanuca Islands. I’ve been to a lot of TV locations, but none like Survivor. Remote, outdoors and rugged, it required being ready to get wet, dirty and hike through jungle. Exactly what I’d signed up for.
Because the cast was bigger than usual — 24 players instead of the typical 18 — interviews were spread over two days. Each press outlet had a small setup: canopy, folding table, two chairs and no electricity. Just sand, heat and prep. But the interviews were dynamite.
‘‘
I got about 20 minutes per castaway (shortest was 18, longest 30), and could ask anything. No publicist hovering, no question approvals, no cutoffs. Honestly, I was stunned. Compared to typical press junkets, this was generous and rare. Even better? The cast. They were genuinely thrilled to be there and all understood the weight of season 50. Chatting one-on-one gave me a true sense
You’re Captain Kirk, I’m Mr. Spock. You’re the man of action. You’re going on away missions. You’re phasering all the aliens. You’re fighing the Gorn. And I’m plotting photon torpedo trajectories back on the bridge. I’m helping plan things out. I could see him Kobayashi Maru-ing some tribal council where he has to get up and put on a show based on some calculation that we made on the votes together. I hope to God that I get to be on an island with him and he’s as receptive as I hope he is to something like that.”
- Christian Hubicki on what it could possibly be like to be in an alliance with Rick Devens

of who they were. Cirie was magnetic. Genevieve was playful, Christian funny and thoughtful. And Coach? Totally zen.
Marooning Day on Castaway Island
Members of the press got to watch the season’s marooning on none other than Castaway Island — that’s right, where Cast Away with Tom Hanks was filmed. nlike in the movie, the island isn’t isolated; several others are nearby, including the one where we interviewed the cast.
Players arrived by boat, host Jeff Probst welcomed everyone to Survivor 50, tribes were revealed and then the marooning challenge almost began.
‘‘
After Jeff geeted everyone, filmin paused. The players took tribe photos, the crew reconfigued their setup, and Jeff walked each group through the course, explaining every detail and answering questions. Jeff ’s a machine. Everything goes through him and during filmin there’s no earpiece, no retakes. Once the cameras roll, he hits every beat: what to say, where to stand, who to ask what. His
I’m in my 50s now, so I’m in a period of reflecion. And in looking back I finally hve perspective on how big of a role Survivor played in most of my adult life. I would have returned just based on gratitude and respect and appreciation for the game. But the second reason I’m here is to finish what I sarted.”
- Colby Donaldson on why he came back for a fourth season
job is far more complex than it appears. When all tribes were prepped, filmin resumed and the challenge began. Viewing it up close is amazing. Between the 24 players, Jeff ’s live commentary, drones buzzing overhead, divers waiting offshore and camera operators weaving around it was a chaotic ballet that was beyond captivating.
A Visit to Camp
Of all the experiences I had, visiting camp might have been the most surreal. Most of the early conversations at camp between players were light as people were still feeling each other out. But watching the game unfold in real time, just feet away, was wild.
I saw Jonathan crack open a coconut in 10 seconds, leaving Dee genuinely impressed. Christian launched into a hilarious explanation of his math-themed t-shirt, one that still baffle Ozzy. And I watched Charlie try on Coach’s toe ring while the rest of the tribe howled with laughter.
‘‘
To win this season, outside of having my girls, would be the honour of a lifetime. People would never stop hearing about it. I’m going to be that old grandma at 90 on my rocking chair being like (in an old lady voice) ‘I won Season 50 .’ Telling all my stories about the island and the jacket and my grandkids will say, ‘We can’t hear about the jacket again, grandma.’ That’s what I want.”
- Angelina Keeley on what it would mean to win season 50
The Cila tribe (L-R): Joe Hunter, Savannah Louie, Christian Hubicki, Cirie Fields, Ozzy Lusth, Emily Flippen, Rick Devens and Jenna Lewis-Dougherty.
Witnessing these moments up close, close enough to touch a castaway if I wanted, was as bizarre as it was unforgettable. As long as I stood behind the boom mic operator, I could get right in the thick of it.
Competing in Challenges
One of the things I was most excited about when I got the Fiji invite was competing in a challenge rehearsal with the Dream Team. I thought I’d get to do one. I ended up doing three.
The fist, and toughest, was the season’s fist immunity challenge. It was brutal fun. John Kirhoffer, who’s overseen every Survivor challenge since the start, walked us through each section. Some parts were team-based, others required one or two people to take the lead. My group had four press members and four Dream Teamers. By the end, we were caked in mud, scraped up and completely spent. We finished, but it as a blast.
Tribal Council
Our final dy on location was packed. That afternoon, we watched the fist immunity challenge. It looked just as
‘‘
“There’s no grounds that I won’t vote you out on. Dee, for instance. Her big toe is crazy large. I’m a feet guy. I don’t like your big toe all big. She can’t play the little bitty piggy wiggies. She can get voted out right now just for her feet.”
- Quintavius “Q” Burdette on how easy it is to find a reason to vote someone out
tough on the castaways as it had been on us, which made me feel slightly better about my group’s last-place finish. Tht night, we witnessed the season’s fist tribal council.
On TV, tribal council lasts about 10 minutes. In real life? Try 90. The press were in a nearby tent, watching on a monitor. First, we saw Dream Teamers stand in as lighting and camera references. Then the real thing played out, unfolding slowly, full of tension and subtle strategy. Afterward, we saw the exit interview with the fist person voted out. What’s a quick sound bite on the

show was a fie-minute postmortem packed with emotion.
Once the remaining players were sent back to camp, we got to explore tribal council. It was massive in scale and rich in detail. I sat in every tribe member’s seat, checked out the fie pit, spotted hidden cameras, and examined the torches up close. Best of all, I got to step into the iconic voting booth. I wrote my wife’s name on a parchment (as my winner pick!) and would later give it to her as a souvenir.
The Survivor Experience
I flw to Fiji with sky-high expectations and a carry-on full of Survivor fanboy dreams. Surely nothing could possibly live up to the Survivor of my imagination. And yet, it did. In fact, it’s fair to say that the experience outwitted, outplayed and outlasted my expectations entirely.
I spoke with 10 crew members — Dream Teamers, producers, camera operators — and every one of them was thoughtful, generous, and in love with the show. Jeff Pobst, who I interviewed
and chatted with often, was smart, warm, and somehow still had time to ask me questions. (Jeff Pobst asked me questions. I’ll be riding that high until season 60.)
Everyone I met cared deeply about what they were doing and that care shows up in every frame of the show. I didn’t think it was possible to love Survivor more than I already did. JUST FIVE YEARS AGO, Simu Liu was best known for playing playing Jung Kim, estranged son of Appa and Umma on beloved CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience. What a difference a few years have made. Since then, he’s become a bona fide mvie star, headlining Marvel superhero adventure Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — not to mention several other films, including blockbuster Barbie. Meanwhile, he’s also unveiled a musical side with the release of his debut EP, Anxious-Avoidant.

Now, Liu is back on television in a new series that’s worlds apart from Kim’s Convenience — twist-filled espionage thriller The Copenhagen Test. He plays Alexander Hale, a fist-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst who realizes that his brain has been hacked, giving the mysterious perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears. “Caught between his shadowy agency and the unknown hackers, he
must maintain a performance 24/7 to flush out ho’s responsible and prove where his allegiance lies,” details the series’ logline.
For Liu, portraying a ChineseAmerican character within the spy-thriller milieu represents a new paradigm in what’s been a very familiar genre. “Up until this point in history, [spies are] the Jason Bournes and the James Bonds of the world,” the actor tells TV Week. “They all look a certain way. Those are the people that we trust with the highest order of intelligence and secrets. And here you have someone who looks like me. What does that do, when someone is trying to come up the ranks and be a spy when their own country’s government holds them suspect because of their own cultural background? All of the

layers of a spy thriller where you’re dealing with different governments and conspiracy plots — all of that is woven with this very authentic look at what it means to be Asian in the West. I just thought, ‘What an incredibly unique premise that’s treated in such a smart way.’”
While there is a sci-fi onceit to The Copenhagen Test, given the recent advances in real-life technology, Liu doesn’t think that the notion of having one’s brain hacked is as far-fetched as some might believe. “It’s that idea of the constant surveillance, and we are constantly surveilled in a lot of ways — we willingly allow ourselves to be, because of our reliance on our devices and our technology,” he muses. “Doing the show has made me want to be more off-grid than ever before. Our phones are listening to us here. Even after this interview, you’re probably gonna get ads for our show!”
So, what does Alexander wind up learning about himself through the experience of being so intimately

invaded? “That’s a really fantastic question,” Liu responds. “I think when we meet Alexander in the pilot, he’s someone who’s really desperate to prove himself and he’s desperate for that validation of, ‘You are one of us. You are American.’ That really resonates with me — that immigrant struggle of wanting to assimilate and wanting to feel at home in this country that they’ve clearly called their own, but the country does not necessarily [welcome them]. There’s a degree of craving the validation and ‘I wish someone would believe in me. I wish someone would gimme a chance.’
“Ultimately, the hack is an inciting incident that allows him to get that chance. But I think, over the course of the season, his wants and his objectives evolve to be maybe more holistic and more self-assured. Rather than operating from a place

of ‘I wanna prove myself,’ he begins to operate from a place of, ‘I need to do what’s right.’ Learning to find that trust in himself and his instincts and his abilities. It’s something that I resonate with so much and that I’ve been very much on the journey of.”
Headlining a big-budget U.S. series (airing on Showcase in his native Canada, and on the Peacock streaming service in the United States) has been a somewhat surreal reminder of the extraordinary trajectory that his career’s taken within just the past few years.
“I mean, I wake up every single day, I feel some degree of gratitude and guilt, because it really does feel like yesterday [when he was a struggling actor],” Liu reflects. “What was really cool is that we shot this show in Toronto, and I got to come home for five-and-ahalf months. It was during winter, so I was not thrilled about the weather. But it was just such a full-circle moment. We had so many crew members that were our crew members from Kim’s . I saw so many familiar faces and it was an incredible, incredible experience for me. It was an opportunity for me to
give back to the [Canadian film and TV] industry that really raised me.”
“And I remember while I was shooting Kim’s, I was on this American show that was also shooting in Toronto — and I was the only Canadian hire on the main regular cast,” he adds. “I remember how much of an imposter and how outside I felt. And so, it was important to me that I made all of our Canadian cast feel welcome . . . because there might be an actor on our show that springboards onto the next thing. My story in Canada is proof that you can do it, you know?”
I think rather than operating from a place of ‘I wanna prove myself,’ he begins to operate from a place of,
‘I need to do what’s right.’ And learning to find that trust in himself and his instincts and his abilities.

HOW TO MAKE A KILLING
STARRING Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, Ed Harris
This pitch-black comedy from director John Patton Ford (Emily the Criminal) is a remake of sorts of the 1949 classic Kind Hearts and Coronets. Glen Powell stars as blue-collar Becket Redfellow, whose mother was disowned from her obscenely wealthy family. Despite his mom’s estrangement from her kin, Becket believes himself to be the rightful heir to the US$28-billion family fortune. There are, however, a few obstacles standing in the way of that inheritance: the other seven members of the family. Deciding he’d rather not wait to get his hands on the money, Becket figures the best way to speed things along is to murder them all — or, as he puts it, “prune a few branches of the family tree.” One by one, he picks off his awful relatives while evading the suspicions of the authorities and navigating the treacherous politics of the elite world he so desperately wants to join.
Psycho Killer
STARRING Georgina Campbell, James Preston Rogers, Malcolm McDowell
Midwinter Break
STARRING Lesley Manville, Ciarán Hinds, Julie Lamberton, Ed Sayer
Described as “a stirring meditation on faith, commitment and the enduring power of love,” this drama follows longtime couple Stella and Gerry ( Lesley Manville and Ciarán Hinds ) during a long-weekend trip to Amsterdam. As they look back at their lengthy shared history, they each reveal deep uncertainties about their future together.
Following the brutal murder of her husband, a Kansas highway patrol office (Georgina Campbell) sets out on a journey to track down the perpetrator. As the hunt progresses, she comes to realize the man responsible (James Preston Rogers) is a sadistic serial killer, and the depth of his mental depravity and his sinister agenda is more twisted than anyone could have imagined.

Q A LAST WORD THE
Q Luke, was it a big advantage getting to spend three seasons building your character before stepping into the marriage spotlight — as opposed to what some of your co-stars went through, being in that spotlight much earlier in the show’s run?
A LUKE: Well, it is a huge benefit because ou get to watch everyone and take notes for three years! But then also, it’s a really fun dynamic to be able to present a very particular side of a character for three seasons — then really diving under that front when he’s placed at the centre of his own love story. It’s a really fun thing to be able to play as an actor, because you get to slightly undercut what you’ve put out before and surprise people. I feel very lucky, timing-wise.
Q And Yerin, on the other side of this equation, you’re joining this very popular show mid-run. Most of your co-stars have had years to develop their characters. Is that a little intimidating? Were you kind of in the same mindset of your character, Sophie, when we

meet her in that carriage on her way to the masquerade ball, where she’s psyching herself up, saying: “I can do this, I can do this . . .?”
A YERIN: [Laughs] Yeah, I feel like I had a similar mantra to Sophie in that carriage sequence, actually. But, was it difficu? Obviously you feel a little bit behind because I haven’t had years to be able to explore my character. So, it does feel like a little bit of catch-up, but when you’re in an environment that makes you feel very safe and actually wants you to succeed, everybody is there supporting you, communicating with you . . . the showrunner, the executive producers, the writers, they’re all there to discuss the scenes and the character with you at any given time. I felt like they put me in an environment where

they wanted me to be able to soar . . . Rather than be like, “You’re doing this all on your own,” actually it was a collaborative and very supportive environment. So, not difficult in tt sense — more just: “Oh, I wanna play catch-up so I can fit into the Bridgerton world seamlessly.”

THURSDAY,
NETFLIX
The first half of this season is ver much Cinderella-inspired. Why was that the right sort of fairytale for Benedict and Sophie’s relationship? For Benedict in particular — who’s always been so aloof and dismissive when it comes to the notion of marriage and the expectations of 1800s English high society — would it maybe take a larger-than-life sort of romance like this to capture his heart?
A
LUKE: The thing that’s great is that obviously it does borrow from Cinderella, but I love how it then uses that pattern to undercut it. Because, actually, Benedict’s flw is his inability to marry fantasy and reality — and his tendency to section out his life in bite-sized, manageable chunks. That’s a very good way to “manage” one’s life, but it’s not very conducive to actually committing to something, or someone, fully . . . being completely in on something.
So, it’s a really good trope, I think, to use for this character, because it’s not just the fairytale element — it’s the fairytale element and how that comes smashing against pressures of the real world. That’s very appropriate for Benedict’s problem, in a way.
YERIN: And with Sophie, the whole masquerade, clock strikes midnight, “leave the item behind” thing is very similar [to Cinderella]. She does meet her “Prince Charming,” if you wanna call it that. But then, she doesn’t just run away with him when he offers something to her. She actually has quite high moral values and knows her worth, even though she is of lower-class status. So, it does veer away from that fairytale element and does ground it in something more real, later on.
QOn that note, Sophie has led what would have to be called a “hard-knock life” up to this point — losing her father and being raised by a stepmother who resents her. And after her indiscretion at the ball, things only get more problematic. She’s effectively cast out onto the street. What does she learn about herself in this crucible that she’s forced to endure?
AYERIN: I think it’s always about survival for Sophie. It’s nice for her to experience that one night of fantasy, but then she notices she can’t actually have that, because being an illegitimate child back in the 1800s, being a maid — they’re not afforded those privileges. She has been in a constant mode of survival and she does have her walls up. Meeting this person, he does knock them down a little bit, but she’s still
CURRENT GIG
One of the most explosively popular shows of the past decade, Bridgerton returned for its fourth, bodice-rippin’ season on January 29. As is now the usual for Netflixs top series, the streamer has divided the eight-part season in half, with the final four episodes debuting this Thursday — concluding the saga of playboy Bridgerton brother Benedict (Luke Thompson) and his Cinderella-esque true love Sophie (Yerin Ha), who began a class-crossed romance after meet-cuting at his family’s masquerade ball.
working on what it means to self-love and respect herself. That will obviously be more explored in part two [of this season]. But in part one, still it’s very much about survival — and not being able to let people in.
QLooking at the series in general, what is Bridgerton’s particular magic? Why has it captured the zeitgeist across the world for all of these years? How does it stand out in the romance genre?
A LUKE: It’s a show that’s sort of spinning fie different plates at the same time, and I think the fact that it’s a global show as well . . . one of the fun things about this publicity tour is that you see different cultures pick up on different elements. The Brazilian fanbase is attracted to the whole telenovela aspect of it. Later on we’re going to Romania, and Romania’s very famous for its fairytales. And it’s a period drama, which appeals to the English. There are just so many different aspects that all marry into this one very coherent universe, and it is entirely on its own terms. It’s its own thing as a show. It really does just make up its own rules — and it’s sincere in that. That’s what makes it so special.
MEMORABLE ROLES
The latest duo to take centre stage in Netflixs heartstringplucking, zeitgeist-grabbing romance have, each in their own rights, built up highly impressive résumés.
A rising star hailing from the Land Down Under, Yerin Ha has distinguished herself in such series as crime thriller Troppo, video game epic Halo and sci-fi opus
Dune: Prophecy
Meanwhile, English thesp Luke Thompson is an Olivier-nominated board-treader who rose to fame for his turn in the West End production of A Little Life . On the big screen, he’s appeared in Second World War blockbuster Dunkirk and dramedic satire Misbehaviour; on the small, you’ve seen him in relationship drama In the Club and quirky spy thriller Transatlantic.
YERIN: Yeah, and everybody wants love. Everybody craves it. It’s in our DNA, to want connection with someone. That escapism, and also to see themselves onscreen with representation, I think [fans are] able to project themselves into that period drama — and experience it almost together with the characters.
QLooking ahead to where we’re headed in these final four episodes of the season, what do Sophie and Benedict need to overcome in themselves to get their “happily ever after?” What personal demons do they need to slay, what personal wounds do they have to overcome before they can find their way to one another in a lasting, meaningful way?
A
YERIN: Well, for Sophie, it’s the whole upstairs-downstairs, fantasy vs. reality aspect. Being of lower-class status and being told a lie essentially [by her stepmother], she has so much trauma that she has to deal with and she can’t ever dream of more than her station. So, I think being able to let her walls down, and knowing that vulnerability is actually strength, is something that she needs to work on — and through that she might be able to let someone in. And loving herself . . . it takes a village. You need people around you to tell that you are deserving of it. That’s the journey that she will be going on. And Benedict brings that fantasy aspect to her — hopes and dreams that maybe she’s lost since she was a very, very little kid.
LUKE: Vice versa, with Benedict, it’s about getting real. The big question as we go into the second part is, after what happens at the end of episode four — which is maybe not a shining example of him getting real and being attuned and sensitive to things — it’s about staring life in the face and not living in this perpetual deferring of things, deferring of a decision or a commitment.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
