EDITOR’S NOTE
THE SIMPSONS MARKS A MAJOR MILESTONE
When you look at television shows in terms of how much money they’ve earned, it’s easy to point to mega-hits like Seinfeld, Friends and The Big Bang Theory, each of which has raked in revenue in excess of US$4.5 billion. As impressive as that may seem, it’s still small potatoes compared to The Simpsons, which has generated a staggering US$14 billion since its debut back in the late 1980s.
The longest-running scripted series in TV history is marking a major milestone this week when The Simpsons’ 800th episode airs. Interestingly, the actual 800th episode was broadcast back in December, but producers delayed the celebratory episode to this week (February sweeps!) by airing the 800th episode to be produced. That special one-hour episode will serve as the season 37 final, titled “Irrational Treasure.”
“Marge’s crusade to get the family dog in better shape leads to her entering Santa’s Little Helper in canine agility competitions and a trip to the National Dog Show in Philadelphia,” reads the episode’s description. “There, Marge and Homer suddenly find themseles — and the dog — mixed up in a historical conspiracy adventure worthy of a National Treasure movie.”

Simpsons
SUNDAY, 8 P.M., CITY & FOX
Guest voices for this milestone episode include Kevin Bacon, Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, The Pitt’s Noah Wyle and The Roots’ Questlove, while Boyz II Men will provide a new iteration of the Simpsons theme song. As executive producer and showrunner Matt Selman explained in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, because of the 10-month gap between when the episodes are written and when the animation is completed, the show has long avoided topicality. “It’s not our mission statement to respond to the crisis of the moment,” says Selman. “It’s more about a town of good-natured dum-dums dealing with a changing world, yet our characters never really change. The world changes around them.”

Being Gordon Ramsay
WEDNESDAY, NETFLIX
Gordon Ramsay has so many Fox reality shows on the air that by the time I stop to count them all up he’ll probably have a few more new ones on the way. This six-part documentary series, however, offers viewers a very different look the hot-tempered, foul-mouthed chef of Hell’s Kitchen and its ilk, following Ramsay during a high-pressured, uniquely intense nine-month period as he prepares to simultaneously open five new restaurants — sorr, “culinary experiences” — in London’s 22 Bishopsgate, one of the city’s tallest buildings. “This is Gordon as we have never seen him before as he opens the doors to his home and businesses,” states the Netflix loglin. “Over a six-month window, the expansion of his restaurant empire begins to take shape and, with the official launch fast approaching, we see Gordon balance th challenges that come with it with his life as a husband to Tana, and father to their six children.”

Crave’s six-part hockey romance scored big with audiences not only in our home and native land but, surprisingly, all across the world — to the point that leading men Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams have even found themselves presenting at the Golden Globes and the Milano Cortina Olympics.
All of which is to say that, yes, the forbidden romance between Canadian Shane Hollander (Williams) and Russian Ilya Rozanov (Storrie) will skate on for a second season.
Both show creator Jacob Tierney and author Rachel Reid have indicated that part two will draw mostly upon Reid’s 2022 novel The Long Game The synopsis, per publisher HarperCollins, reads: “Ten years. That’s how long Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov have been seeing each other. How long they’ve been keeping their relationship a secret. From friends, from family . . . from the league. If Shane wants to stay at the top of his game, what he and Ilya share has to remain secret. He loves Ilya, but what if going public ruins everything?
“Ilya is sick of secrets. Shane has gotten so good at hiding his feelings, sometimes Ilya questions if they even exist. The closeness, the intimacy, even the risk that would come with being open about their relationship . . . Ilya wants it all. It’s time for them to decide what’s most important — hockey or love . . .”

I am trying to remember one of the scariest movies I had ever seen. I was in high school, so that makes it early ’70s, and it was about a guy who turns into a snake. Can you help?
–B.K., Surrey
I believe you are thinking of a 1973 film called Sssssss — also released as Sssssnake in some markets. It was an exceptionally creepy flick, fro the viewpoint of both the audiences who watched it through their finger at the cinema, as well as the actors forced to interact with real, venomous rattlesnakes and cobras on set.
The star was Dirk Benedict, who went on to great TV success as Starbuck on the original Battlestar Galactica, and then later as “Faceman” on The A-Team during the ’80s.
Benedict’s character in Sssssss was David Blake, a college student who got a part-time job as lab assistant to a mad scientist named Dr. Carl Stoner, played by veteran character actor
comes news that another iconic gaming franchise will hit screens in late 2027 or early 2028.
Debuting way back in 2005, God of War hit Sony PlayStation consoles like a lightning bolt from Mount Olympus, weaving the saga of Kratos — a ferocious Spartan warrior who was first xalted, then betrayed by the gods, leading him on a mission of vengeance against Zeus, Ares, et al. This new TV series is based on the 2018 franchise reboot, which saw our weary, aging antihero leave Greece
Strother Martin. Stoner’s work with serpents of various sorts takes place under the guise of creating a universal antivenom that can save anyone bitten by any snake . . . but that’s just the cover story.
What the doctor is really up to involves transforming a human being into an actual king cobra. David proves to be the perfect subject — in no small part because he’s developed a romantic interest in Stoner’s daughter, Kristina (Heather Menzies). Stoner requires David to take daily “antivenom shots” to protect him from bites, but what’s actually being administered is the experimental drug. The bodyhorror story that ensues is nothing less than sssssspine-tingling.

Meanwhile, Severance’s Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play the goneto-seed god of thunder Thor; Lights Out ’s Teresa Palmer is Thor’s wife Sif; and the most intriguing bit of casting yet may just be Homeland’s Mandy Patinkin as all-powerful king of the gods Odin. Girl in the Wind
The saga of 1970s Navajo cops Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito continues with a fourth season that takes this intrepid trio far beyond the Four Corners, into the City of Angels.
Based on the sixth novel in Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee series — 1984’s The Ghostway — the season finds ou heroes on the trail of Billie Tsosie (Isabel DeRoy-Olson), a Navajo teen who runs away from her Southwest boarding school in search of a new life, only to land in the crosshairs of L.A. crime boss Dominic McNair (Bosch’s Titus Welliver). After the girl learns too much about his operation, McNair dispatches asssassin Irene Vaggan (The Bourne Identity’s Franka Potente) to silence her. Speaking with TV Insider, Potente let slip that Irene develops a fixtion on Joe, stemming from portrayals of the Apache chief she read in western novels growing up in Nazi Germany. “She believes
he is her ideal man, and she cannot harm him,” the actress explained. “Irene becomes Joe’s psycho stalker . . . and everyone’s nightmare.” Also joining the cast is Chaske Spencer (The English) as a deceptively menacing criminal “recruiter” who specializes in corrupting young Native runaways.
The show is, as ever, coproduced by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford, who passed away in September. At the time, Redford was long retired from acting — but it’s worth noting that his final perormance came in Dark Winds’ 2025 season-three premiere, cameo-ing as a jailbird playing chess with his cellmate, portrayed by Martin.

Once again, FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) must unravel a conspiracy, the twists and turns of which lead all the way to the White House. Per Netflixs teaser, “Peter is sent to track down a young Treasury agent who has fled to Istanbul with sensitive government intel after killing his boss. What begins as a high-stakes manhunt quickly spirals into something far more dangerous as Peter uncovers a dark money network.”
As if that weren’t enough intrigue, our young hero is now a double agent, pretending to be in the pocket of the Broker (Louis Herthum) while secretly gathering intel on this mysterious puppet master who at the end of last season orchestrated the election of his “preferred candidate” to the Oval Offi. Speaking of which, Ward Horton is back as newly elected president Richard Hagan, now joined by House alum Jennifer Morrison as savvy First Lady Jenny. That struggle plays out largely via our protagonist landing a gig on a Bridgerton-esque smash hit.
The show airs on BBC across the pond, and per their synopsis: “Desperate to work on a project that aligns with his values, he manages to secure a directing job for major TV series Sin and Subterfuge — a genre-busting period drama, helmed by the iconic black producer Bridgette Julienne (Hijack’s Christine Adams). But over the course of the series, the show’s progressive agenda morphs into an increasingly problematic production, and he begins to wonder, has he been set up to fail from the start?” As Salmon himself furthermore teased in a chat with Rolling Stone U.K., fans can expect “new types of dreams — fantasy sequences! Sommore: Chandelier Fly
TUESDAY, NETFLIX
The impulse of many a striver in the entertainment world tends toward chasing trends — staying relevant by adapting to the flvour of the microsecond. But the true key to longevity is authenticity. That’s no doubt the viewpoint adopted by Sommore, a veteran standup long determined to be exactly who she is — unapologetically. It’s a mantra that crystalized with her 2013 special Chandelier Status. As she told Vibe at the time: “I came up with the title because I wanted to describe what I’m feeling in this new society. Everything moves fast. The only way to know who you are is to stay true to yourself and be a chandelier. When you see a room that’s beautiful, it’s usually the chandelier that’s constant. People usually change all the other things in the room, but the chandelier stays and illuminates the whole
room. So, I decided that I was going to live my life like a chandelier — meaning I wasn’t going to hate on no one else. I wasn’t going to compete with anyone else. I was going to concentrate on being the best me that I can be. I believe that when you do that, you shine.”
Over a decade later, she continues lighting it up on stage with that same ethos and that same nomenclature — an approach which has taken her all the way to the giddy heights of Netflix. n 2023, the New Jersey native made her debut on the streamer with Queen Chandelier. Now comes a follow-up: Chandelier Fly.
Filmed at Detroit’s iconic Garden Theater, this new set sees Sommore cracking wise on celebrity scandals and various other hot topics, offering audiences in the room and around the world her POV — as ever — “with bravado and style.”

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
FOLLOWING CBS’ DECISION
to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in what was supposedly “a purely financial decision” — the clock is ticking down to the final episode on May 21, and the big question is what host Stephen Colbert has planned for his next act after being dumped by the network and its new owner, billionaire David Ellison. While the answer to that question is yet to be revealed, Colbert offered some hints during a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “It feels real now,” Colbert said of the show’s imminent end. “It did not feel — I mean, I know it was real, but now, there’s four months left.”
Colbert’s Next Move
Whatever he does next, Colbert admitted the toughest part of moving on will be missing the people he’s worked with for the past decade. “What I really love is the people I do it with,” he said. “And we’ll do something else together, but it feels real now. I’m not thrilled with it.”
Colbert also addressed the various rumours about his next move. “I’m neither going to confirmnor deny any of these, or many of these — ’cause I gotta keep my options open,” he said.
Will he write a book about his favourite author, J.R.R. Tolkien?
“I’m always doing that.” Colbert responded. Will he launch a new TV show partnering with either Rachel Maddow, Tom Hanks, Jasmine Crockett and Simon Cowell? “All fie of us,” he quipped, with Meyers responding, “You guys are gonna be the new A-Team.” Will he found a wildlife rescue program for endangered elephants? “Not endangered — depressed,” Colbert joked. Has he signed a hefty deal with Netflix, eportedly worth US$13.5 million? “Not enough money,” Colbert deadpanned. Could one of those options be working with Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels in some capacity? “Would you tell him I’m available in June?” Colbert jokingly told Meyers. “I don’t know if he’s still hiring . . . I need a show, man.”
Meanwhile, Colbert also addressed rumours that he’s considering running for president in 2028. “I’ve heard that one,” he told Meyers, solemnly adding, “If there is some way for me to serve the American people in some way that could possibly be greater than a late-night television show, I would consider that,” he said.
Stephen Colbert says he’s keeping his options open with respect to what he’ll do next after The Late Show ends in May.
ANNE HATHAWAY DELVES INTO TRUE CRIME
For Anne Hathaway, 2026 is poised to be a big year at the box offi, with a massive movie lineup including the films Mother Mary (due out in April), The Devil Wears Prada 2 (debuting May 1), Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (July), Flowervale Street (August) and Verity (October). Also in the pipeline are The Princess Diaries 3 and the Ron Howard-directed Alone at Dawn, although neither of those yet have an officia release date.
Now comes word that Hathaway is also attached to star in a true crime series heading to Paramount+. Titled Fear Not, the limited series is based on Julie Miller’s article “True Crime, True Faith: The Serial Killer and the Texas Mom Who Stopped Him” for Vanity Fair and is being adapted by screenwriter Bash Doran (Boardwalk Empire).
According to the logline, the series will tell the story of “a prolific serial kille, Stephen
KROLL PATROL
Morin — accused of more crimes than Ted Bundy — and the unlikely bond he formed with Margy Palm (Hathaway), the last woman he ever kidnapped. Morin’s abduction of Palm, which started as a deadly captive situation, took an unlikely turn: one that included compassion, prayer and profound courage. Palm’s devotion to her faith and her insistence that Morin could be transformed became the impetus of a relationship that lasted long after Palm was returned to safety — until Morin received the death penalty.”
Hathaway is also exec producer on Fear Not, which is the latest major female-led series picked up by Paramount+. “At Paramount+, we are always looking for stories that captivate and entertain our audience, and this series will do exactly that,” said Jane Wiseman, head of originals for Paramount+.
“By grounding this chilling true story in the lived experience of our protagonist, Anne is bringing a level of nuance and gravity to the screen that only a performer of her calibre can. We are thrilled to collaborate with Anne, Bash and the rest of this illustrious team, and we can’t wait for viewers to see what is sure to be an enthralling limited series.”
Co-creator and star of Big Mouth and its spinoff Human Resources, comedian Nick Kroll has enjoyed a string of animated successes at Netflix. That partnership is set to continue, with the streamer recently greenlighting a new live-action comedy series from Kroll.
Titled A Hundred Percent, the new comedy series is written by Kroll and showrunner Gabe Liedman , who’s previously worked with Kroll on Big Mouth and Kroll Show
The half-hour comedy will spoof those who instruct others how to live, following a group of friends who work within the Thought Leader industrial complex.
According to the Netflix loglin, “their books, podcasts and morning routines might help us live our lives more perfectly,
but away from the screens and mics, they are most definitely far from perfect”
In addition to Kroll, the cast includes Sam Richardson (Veep), Vanessa Bayer (Saturday Night Live ) and Kroll’s The League co-star and longtime friend/collaborator Jason Mantzoukas
“Picture me doing the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders’ ‘Thunderstruck’ flawlesslyright now because that’s how I feel,” Liedman said in a statement. “This team, Netflix and this cast?! I feel especially lucky to be working with Nick again, and I promise to do my best to bring you all something nuts to watch very soon. I am thrilled to make this show with Gabe and this insane cast. I can’t wait to explore this high-functioning group of friends who endeavour to live their weird lives!”

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

HBO returns to the world of GAME OF THRONES with this gritty new prequel series
IIF YOU ARE DUE for a dose of Westeros, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrives to tide you over until House of the Dragon returns for season three. In George R.R. Martin’s prequel series to Game of Thrones, which takes place about 80 years after the conclusion of Dragon and approximately 90 years before GoT, we follow Ser Duncan the Tall (“Dunk,” played by former rugby player Peter Claffey) and his squire Aegon Targaryen (“Egg,” played by Dexter Sol Ansell), before they claim their roles as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and the future King Aegon V.
This time around, unlike the pomp and circumstance of the show that started it all, we see Westeros from the perspective of the common people. “I hope that it makes an excellent entry point for people who did not come to Game of Thrones the fist time or the second time,” says series co-creator Ira Parker. “Partly because we’re fairly simple and straightforward in our approach — we have one POV character in Ser Duncan the Tall — and it allows people a little bit more clarity as to what we’re following.“ Dunk is also a lot gentler than your average GoT character. “He’s earnest, he’s honest and he has a lot of self-doubt and anxieties, which hopefully people will recognize from their own journeys in their own lives,” says Parker. “He’s just a kid with a silly dream who wants to
go out and be a knight, but he doesn’t quite know how to achieve that.”
When it came to adapting Martin’s book series, Tales of Dunk and Egg, what Parker and Martin wanted to maintain from the text was the vulnerability of the two main characters. “When they fist meet each other, I think these two characters are actually quite lonely,” says Parker. “I’m not sure they completely recognize it as that. Obviously Dunk has just lost his longtime mentor and the only person in the whole world who even knows he exists. And we find Eg in a different sort of loneliness. He’s been a bit abandoned and he’s a bit aimless. When the two of them come together, there’s something subconscious about the reason that they seek each other out.”
‘‘ He’s earnest, he’s honest and he has a lot of self-doubt and anxieties, which hopefully people will recognize from their own journeys in their own lives. He’s just a kid with a silly dream who wants to go out and be a knight, but he doesn’t quite know how to achieve that.”
Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and young squire Aegon (Dexter Sol Ansell) prepare to compete in a tournament.
To Parker, the series is ultimately about finding our family. “This whole story is about the different nature of how families are made,” he says. “This relationship is, at its core, a knight and a squire, a mentor and mentee, a master and apprentice. But also, a father and son.” While Dunk’s relationship with his own mentor was complicated, he viewed Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb) as a father figue, and seeks, maybe even unintentionally, to replicate that relationship with Egg. “Dunk is very protective over Egg,” says Parker. “They’re also like brothers. They really have a complicated relationship, and I think it all stems from Dunk not having any family to begin with, being an orphan in Fleabottom. And Egg, in a very unspoiler-y way, also had complicated relationships with his family and is
seeking out that connection that was never given to him.”
To forge the onscreen brotherhood between Dunk and Egg, Claffey and Ansell spent some quality time bonding in Belfast. “I met Dexter right at the end of my auditioning process. We did a chemistry read together,” says Claffey. “He was nine years old at the time, but the illusion of an immature kid dissipates very, very quickly. Dexter is such an impressive mature little man. It feels like you’re working with an actor that’s, you know, been in the industry for 50 years. We were really lucky to have about two months preparation before we got into shooting and we went to the arcades a lot.”
The two also did horse riding and combat training in preparation for their roles. “I think those two months, they could have been quite nerveracking,” says Claffey. “You don’t know what the relationship’s going to be like.” Thankfully, the two quickly fell into step with each other. “We’re like brothers, not only our characters, but in real life,” says Ansell. “And it
As Game of Thrones aficionados kno, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) will eventually sit on the Iron Throne as King Aegon V.

feels like I’ve been with these guys for my whole life. But I guess it’s weird because we just feel like buddies but at the end of the day they’re all adults.”
If anyone felt anxious about stepping into the franchise, it was Claffey. “Trust me, the pressure was very much there,” he says. “It was in my head the entirety of the time. To come into this world that I’d loved and respected, in such a pivotal role, was something that I’m still trying to adapt to.” Thankfully his nerves were something he could bring to the character. “Dunk obsesses over things and worries a lot and has some serious anxiety issues and I’ve got a lot of experience with that stuff,” says the Irish actor. “When I got the job and went to meet Owen [Harris, EP] and Ira, I was violently ill with anticipation and nervousness. I suppose both Dunk and I have that in common, for sure.”
The question the series seeks to answer is whether Dunk is a hero.
“I thought to myself, it’s inviting us all to ask whether we can be a hero and what that would mean for us,” ponders Bertie Carvel, who plays Egg’s uncle Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne. “Dunk dreams of doing heroic deeds, and then you cut to him s***ting behind a tree and he’s reminded of his humanity, his mortality, his limitations and so
on. Around him, he sees knights who seem more capable and grander. It is a heroic story because it’s grounded in something quite humane and mortal.” To Carvel, this is a lesson to us all. “I think it would be good if we would ask ourselves the question, ‘What would it mean to be more heroic?’ People do ordinary things that are deeply heroic, all the time, and the sum total of those things can add up to a world still existing in 2027.”
‘‘ This relationship is, at its core, a knight and a squire, a mentor and mentee, a master and apprentice. But also, a father and son.”
Upon the death of Ser Arlen, his former squire Dunk (Peter Claffey) taes his role as a hedge knight.
Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg Dexter Sol Ansell) enjoy a celebratory moment.

SUNDAY IS A BIG NIGHT for Fox’s enduring “Animation Domination” primetime lineup. Not only is The Simpsons airing its 800th episode (as detailed in this week’s Editor’s Note on page 5), but Family Guy is marking a similar milestone: this week’s season premiere not only kicks off the shw’s 24th season, but will also be the 450th episode to air.
The relationship between mom Lois (Alex Borstein) and son Stewie (Seth MacFarlane) expands in some THC-fuelled directions in Family Guy’s 450th episode.

For fans of the show — even casual ones who may only watch occasionally episode No. 450 is a must-see that takes one of the show’s most enduringly complicated relationships and turns it on its head.
“We’ve had 449 episodes to establish all the intricacies and realities of Lois and Stewie’s relationship, resentments and past experiences that it gives us so much to work with,” Family Guy exec producer Rich Appel told TVLine of the episode.
As viewers may recall, Stewie (voiced by series creator Seth MacFarlane) has made countless attempts to murder Lois (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Emmy winner Alex Borstein), considering his mother to be his nemesis — until an episode in the sixth season found him running a simulation of how that would actually go down, with the dire unintended consequences leading Stewie to wisely abandon those attempts.
Since then, their mother-son relationship has grown more complex and nuanced, and becomes even

more so when the two accidentally get stoned together. Thanks to her altered state, Lois can actually hear what Stewie’s saying for the fist time. Being able to communicate, the two are able to understand each other very differently than they had previously — including Stewie finally explaining why a Rhode Island toddler inexplicably has a British accent.
“They talk about the stuff tht fans would want them to talk about — the
history of their relationship, Stewie’s desire to kill her, his opinion of her, hers of him, their approach to life, and similarities they might have that we couldn’t touch on between two characters who don’t speak to each other,” added Appel. “The third act is basically a character play.”
Those who know the show won’t be surprised to find out tht their altered state comes courtesy of family dog Brian (also voiced by MacFarlane) and that there are consequences for feeding marijuana to a toddler, accidentally or not.
“The episode starts with Brian going to a [dispensary] and bringing home gummies,” explains exec producer Alec Sulkin. “Stewie thinks they’re candy, so he gets into them, and Lois is deemed an unfit parent.” As a result, Stewie is taken out of the Griffinamily home and sent to live with the Swansons in temporary foster care.
According to Sulkin, this ranks as “one of my favourite episodes,” revealing that “the audience went crazy for it” when the cast assembled for a live table read of the episode at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Fans are promised an episode that will tug on the heartstrings more than what’s typically expected in Family Guy
Creating an episode focusing on the two characters, Sulkin added, has been a long time coming. “That’s the other thing that’s fun about being both in season 24 and on an animated show that has the luxury of having a cast of 50 characters we know,” he explained. “There’s always these interesting pairings that you hadn’t thought of before, to see how they play out.”
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Borstein hinted that viewers will experience a story with more emotional impact than a typical episode of Family Guy. “There was actual acting. We did a live reading of that, and it was very touching. It was really interesting,” she said.

‘‘
I think that Ryan Murphy has a nose for the zeitgeist and what we’re all talking about. There’s a lot to be said about the chase for perfection and the commodifiction of beauty . . . The idea that you can pay for perfection and therefore you’re handing over your idea of it to someone who is taking your money and might want more of it, what does that mean?”
As in typical Murphy fashion, subtlety is not what is on the menu, but when it comes to exploring a cultural phenomenon, his cast believes this particular auteur feeds the conversation in a way no one else can. “He creates worlds that are really socially relevant,” says Ashton Kutcher, who plays tech billionaire Byron Forst, whose company — The Corporation — is behind a drug that achieves “the transformation” at a

cost that goes beyond the monetary.
“I think Ryan has his finer on the pulse of what’s happening in pop culture and the conversations that people are having in the background, that they really wish they could talk about publicly.”
Who better to tackle a societal dilemma — especially one as topical as striving for perfection — than the creator of American Horror Story and Nip/Tuck. “I think that Ryan

Murphy has a nose for the zeitgeist and what we’re all talking about,” says Hall. “There’s a lot to be said about the chase for perfection and the commodifiction of beauty. I think human beauty is a conceptually complicated thing. The idea that you can pay for perfection and therefore you’re handing over your idea of it to someone who is taking your money and might want more of it, what does that mean? Frankly, I think keeping people in a place of inadequacy is more profitabl.”
What Murphy also does, according to Kutcher, is create a true playground for his performers to express themselves in this heightened reality. Jeremy Pope discovered this early on in the series, when his character transforms from a man who does not meet the ideal societal beauty requirements to a specimen of male perfection. “When Ryan gets in the room, you have to be ready to make adjustments. You can’t be too locked in, physically, to what’s happening because it can change,” says Pope. “On my day of transforming, we thought it was going to go one way, and he had a different vision. It required me to use my physical body, and it became more of a ballet. It was about expressing this person feeling their body, their skin, the muscles, and how instead of playing the body horror or the pain of it, there can be beauty in finding this true perfected self.”
Fictional Jeremy, in his new and improved vessel, soon crosses paths with Antonio, a Christopher Crossloving 65-year-old assassin in a 30-something-year-old’s body. Events send The Corporation’s Antonio and Jeremy on a turbulent road trip. Played by Anthony Ramos, the oneeyed assassin is the Hamilton star’s
fist foray into the world of Ryan Murphy. “When Ryan explained the role to me, he just said, ‘Anthony, I want to build the character that you’ve always wanted to play,’” recalls Ramos. “I don’t know if anyone’s ever said that to me, to be honest. I was excited that this guy, who’s built an entire world on television, is telling me, ‘Hey man, I see you, and I really want to show off all the parts of you that you may not have had the opportunity to show.’”
Ramos’ friend of 15 years, for whom this marks his third project with Murphy, could not have been more excited to play with his college buddy. “It was cool to be able to do a show that was stretching us both creatively but felt safe doing it with someone that you love and really respect,” says Pope. “For me, each iteration of a project I’ve done with Ryan is very different. I think he’s a champion for artists to shine and do what it is that they feel called to do. We’ve had many conversations where he goes, ‘What do you want to make?’ And this was about exploring this wild world centred on a proposed

question that I think is very evocative and will make people uncomfortable.”
The question that is being asked is, of course, how far would we go for beauty? Although society might not scientifically be in a place where one vial fies everything, there are a lot of solutions available that all carry a certain risk. “We’re at a place where you can buy a shot that’ll make you skinnier — and people are afraid of taking shots, but they’ll take that shot. You can get shots in your face to make you not have wrinkles. You can get hair treatments for more hair. You can get Invisalign to get your teeth straight. We’re right at the precipice of babies being born with gene edits that eliminate diseases that would shorten their lifespan,” lists Kutcher.
Kutcher points out that The Beauty isn’t a sci-fi shw set in a distant future. “This is happening now. And that is the brilliance of Ryan

Murphy. He’s like, ‘I’m going to take it fie minutes into the future, where there’s actually just one shot that does a bunch of these things and then let’s consider what the secondary and tertiary side effects of that kind of thing are.’ That’s what makes this show poignant. It will get people to ask a lot of questions, so that maybe fie minutes from now we make the right choices.”
For Peters, there is a clear message to take away from The Beauty that’s not too different from Murphy’s other shows. “There’s a throughline through a lot of Ryan’s projects, which is that the thing that makes you ‘you,’ and makes you unique, is the thing that makes you interesting and is to be celebrated,” he says. “There are some episodes that really hammer that in, and I think that there is nobody better than Ryan to spread that message.”
FBI agent Cooper Madsen (Evan Peters) is assigned to investigate after a shocking incident after a fashion show.
Cooper’s fellow FBI agent Jordan Bennett (Rebecca Hall) is partnered with him on the investigation.

Q
A LAST WORD THE
Q What would you say is the power in this show’s particular brand of sci-fi spy ficti?
A I’ve been a fan of espionage fiction sine I was 13. I started reading James Bond, and then as I got older I read more complex stuff, so I was a fan of Le Carré. I was fascinated by the world of loyalty and dilemma of loyalties, because my parents are Holocaust survivors — and because I’m fascinated by what patriotism can do and what nationalism can do and what unchecked idealism that turns fanatical can do. It’s part of my dealing with generational trauma, which I guess every culture has. We all have victims, we all have perpetrators, we all have bystanders, heroes, cowards in all of our backgrounds, but because my parents survived the Holocaust and because I was born in a refugee camp . . . I was fascinated by the script.
But way before the script, I was fascinated by what are the restrictions morally — are there any? — when it comes to protecting your country? Flag-waving is a dangerous thing in my background. Because when people wave flgs, my people run for the hills.

How does The Copenhagen Test stand out from other TV offering?
A It’s a very intricately plotted, beautifully mitigated story that does not talk down to the audience. It’s a propulsive thriller, yes, but it also is challenging the audience at every turn. When you think you’ve figued out what it is, it takes the ground out from under you — not just for entertainment’s sake as cliffhaners, but it does it on a deeper level because it’s undermining the audience’s sense of what is right and wrong. There aren’t a lot of shows that do that. When you watch espionage shows, you’re told pretty much who the bad guy is, and you’re waiting for redemption and some kind of catharsis where the bad guy’s going to be blown away — hopefully viciously and dramatically, with a lot of

explosives. We want justice, because we sure as hell aren’t getting it every day in our lives . . . so we want to see it on our television sets. But this isn’t going to do that. It’s going to challenge your ideas in a very entertaining and very thrilling kind of way.

TUESDAY, 6 P.M. & 9:30 P.M., SHOWCASE
You have an interesting pre-existing connection to the show’s leading man, Simu Liu . . .
A Simu Liu, I feel kind of an odd father ownership of — because maybe 16 years ago one of his fist jobs was to be Bartender No. 2 on a series I did called Warehouse 13. I wasn’t in the scene where he was Bartender No. 2, but I know that’s one of the things he did before he broke out in one of the most successful situation comedies in Canadian history, which was Kim’s Convenience — where he learned his craft — and then doing Marvel, and from then on becoming very famous, [gaining] the notoriety that’s earned by very hard work and talent.
I’ve been doing series for over 45 years, and I can tell you the key to leadership is to realize that you’re there to support everyone else — not to be supported by everyone else. You’re a hub on a wheel. There’s only one reason for a hub, and that’s to make the wheel go round and to support the spokes. Many leaders don’t realize it or don’t have the personality for it, but we were very lucky on this show because Simu, whatever he’s learned from Kim’s Convenience and his background, this is a leading actor who is supportive of everyone around him.
Q Speaking of Warehouse 13, was that a rare experience for you? Instead of jumping from role to role, you got to spend half a decade with a single character, telling a single story, as only a TV show can really offe.
A Not only a television show, because it’s not the only place you can do it. I’ve just experienced it; I’m doing a one-man [stage] show called Playing Shylock, which I started last year in Toronto. And there’s a cliché in theatre, which is that your very best show in your fist week is not 10 per cent as good as your worst show in your last week. The French have an interesting word for audience: l’assistance. An audience teaches you from performance to performance what it’s about. I would imagine that some very good movie star who’s never done theatre gets convinced to do Broadway, and maybe they’ve never done a play since high school. I would imagine that those actors are now thinking to themselves, “What the f***? I’ve got to do this eight times a week for four more months?”
They’re going to learn what you just said about doing television series: that the nature of your craft as an artist is transformed by the more you play the role . . . It transforms you as an artist if you let it transform you. It doesn’t necessarily happen. Some artists are not transformed by the experience of doing a series weekly for years, by doing a play for four months. It could be a great performance even if they’re not allowing that transformation. But for me, all my life I have been

interested in taking chances. I’ve been interested in risking abject failure, because I was taught that way from the time I was a child.
Q Can you talk about your recent stage show
Playing Shylock, and the cultural commentary this production makes regarding this historically hot-button character?
A The character I’m playing is an actor who’s playing the role of Shylock in Merchant of Venice, and it’s a one-man show. The Merchant of Venice has been cancelled by the theatre because it’s considered anti-Semitic, and there’s pressure from the Jewish community to stop the run of the show, and the cast finds out during intermission. This chaacter of Shylock is considered a lightning rod for anti-Semitism for 400 years, and I say [to the audience], “Well, why would I be doing that?”
The actor’s name that I’m playing is Saul Rubinek. The same name as mine, who’ the child of Holocaust survivors. Why would I be doing an anti-Semitic play?
Not only that, my father was an actor in Yiddish theatre who always wanted to play Shylock, but Hitler stopped him from doing Yiddish theatre, and so I’m playing the character as if my father’s playing it — with a Yiddish accent and as an
MEMORABLE ROLES
Over his decades-spanning career, Rubinek has been nothing less than prolific — appearing in iconic films le Unforgiven, Nixon and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs He’s been equally visible on TV, notably recurring as Daphne Moon’s love interest Donny on hit sitcom Frasier, plus a five-season run on supernatural action rom Warehouse 13. Also a frequent treader of the boards, Rubinek just wrapped an off-Broadway run in subversiv one-man show Playing Shylock. Finally, the man’s an author, having penned 1988 memoir So Many Miracles about his parents’ experiences in the Holocaust — a saga he recently expanded via new tome All in the Telling: a somewhat true story, about his own life as the child of Holocaust survivors.
Orthodox Jew. And I’m playing him very Jewish — whereas most of the time Jews don’t play this role. It’s played as a metaphor. “Jew” becomes a metaphor for whatever “other” is currently the most oppressed in whatever community is staging it. Directors have to figue out a way to make literature’s most infamous Jew as inoffensive to Jews as possible, usually by making sure the character of Shylock is not presented as Jewish.
QYou also have a new book out, All in the Telling, that you’re hoping to adapt for stage or screen. It’s a sequel of sorts to another book you wrote in 1988, So Many Miracles, about your parents’ experience surviving the Holocaust. What can you say about that?
AI’d written a book between 1976 and 1985, which consisted of 10 years almost of interviews with my parents about their lives before, during and after the war . . . and this friend of mine said, “You’re not done with this story.” I was really upset with him. I said, “I interviewed my parents for 10 years, I took them back to Poland, they had a documentary film [mde in conjunction with the book] they could show people . . . I’ve done my duty as a nice Jewish son. Leave me the f*** alone!” And my friend Rick [Cleveland, screenwriter] said, “Saul, you’ve told everybody’s story but your own. You haven’t told your story, and you haven’t told your sister’s story, and you haven’t told your daughter’s story . . .”
[The new book] is a way of telling a story mostly about the relationship between me and my parents, and their biblical reaction to me not having a Jewish girlfriend — and the lies that were told because of it. It relates to many cultures, so it’s really a book only for people who’ve had parents. If you don’t have parents, then I wouldn’t read this book! It is about the fact that all cultures have perpetrators and victims and cowards and heroes and bystanders — and sometimes those qualities are in the same person, on the same day. It tries to reach its hand out to other children of parents who have tried to overcome intergenerational trauma, by using humour as a way of bonding.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
