Celebs unite to beat cancer

The first Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon was broadcast in 2008, featuring an array of stars that included cancer survivors Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow and Christina Applegate, along with Dirty Dancing icon Patrick Swayze, who tragically died of pancreatic cancer the following year.

That inaugural special went on to raise US$100 million for research into the disease. Since then, Stand Up 2 Cancer has become a biennial event, airing on multiple platforms for maximum visibility every other year; to date, the events have raised in excess of US$1 billion.

This year’s gala will once again bring together musicians, actors, athletes, cancer survivors and researchers, with Crow returning to host the festivities taking place at The Pinnacle in Nashville. Among the confirmed guests so far is country music legend Dolly Parton

“The goal of Stand Up 2 Cancer has always been about working collaboratively to push cancer research forward so we could help patients as quickly as possible,” said SU2C co-founder Katie Couric in a statement. “Nearly two decades later, it’s incredibly gratifying and inspiring to see the

impact of this research. Bringing the show to Nashville will infuse new energy and excitement into our mission. There’s still so much work to do and every dollar makes a difference — especially to the families who are counting on novel approaches and therapies as they face the challenges that often accompany a cancer diagnosis.”

In a brief video promoting the 2025 edition, Parton is joined by a who’s who of stars including Reese Witherspoon, Jon Hamm, Matthew McConaughey, Kathy Bates, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anthony Anderson, Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah.

“If we join forces,” says Parton in the video, “we can beat cancer forever.”

A KILLER LEGACY

What’s going on with that Monsters series?

F.L., Langley

After tackling Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers, Netflix’s Emmy-magnet anthology will return this October, as Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam takes on infamous 1950s serial killer Ed Gein. What’s more, the Ryan Murphy-produced series has already begun casting for season four, which will focus on alleged 1892 axe-murderess and morbid nursery rhyme inspirer Lizzie Borden. She’ll be played by Ella Beatty, daughter of Hollywood royalty Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. Meanwhile, bringing to life Lizzie’s doomed stepmother is The Town’s Rebecca Hall.

Upcoming spinoff President Curtis is set to trace the misadventures of Rick and Morty’s unhinged POTUS.

COMMANDERIN-CHUCKLES?

Has Rick and Morty been renewed yet? I know they got a big [episode order] years ago — but they must be almost through that one, yes?

F.K., Dawson Creek No need to worry. Following a 70-episode pickup in 2018, which was then expanded by another 20 episodes in 2024, the interdimensional adventures of mad scientist Rick Sanchez will continue through at least season 12 on Adult Swim — and they’ve

only just finished airing season eight!

What’s more, this indelible universe is set to expand with a spinoff based on fan-fave, President Andre Curtis. Sometimes Rick’s ally and sometimes his enemy, Curtis is voiced by veteran character actor Keith David, who’s appeared in everything from The Thing to Requiem for a Dream to Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon’s beloved sitcom Community

Rounding out the voice cast are Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz and Community ’s Jim Rash

“President Curtis has always been a blast to play,” said David in a release. “Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”

Added Harmon and his spinoff co-creator James Siciliano in a joint statement: “President Curtis has always been one of our favourite characters to write — he’s the only person in the multiverse who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office. Now we finally get to go on sci-fi missions from Curtis’ point of view. And with Keith David leading the charge, it’s going to be a wild ride.”

A premiere date is still TBA.

CASE CLOSED?

We were positively gutted to read [in TV Week] that Grantchester is being cancelled. What’s the deal?!

E.F., North Vancouver PBS’s small-town U.K. crime drama just recently capped season 10 — and it has, indeed, been announced that season 11 will be the swan song. Said exec producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd: “After 11 incredible series, and the most wonderful experiences with a fantastic cast and crew, we have decided to bid a very fond farewell to our favourite crime-fighting duo. Audiences are in for the most ambitious and thrilling series yet — Geordie and Alphy are going out with a bang!”

Set during “the heady summer of 1963,” this farewell season will arrive in 2026. It’ll find Rev. Alphy questioning everything he believes in as he learns more about his fraught past. Meanwhile, DI Geordie gets a job offer that could spell the end of the copper and the vicar’s unlikely partnership.

With all due respect to the current Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot, I have always preferred the TV original — Lynda Carter. Any chance we would see her in a Wonder Woman role again?

U.E., Surrey

Lynda Carter played the iconic role of Wonder Woman/Diana Prince from 1975 to 1979 for three seasons, split between ABC and CBS — bringing to life the comic book character first dreamt up by psychologist William Moulton Marston in 1941. As a beauty pageant contestant, Carter won the title of Miss World USA in 1972. She was 24 years old when cast as the superhero, beating out about 500 auditioners, including all three actresses who became the original “Angels” on Charlie’s Angels: Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson. Carter was known for doing her own stunt work, often to the dismay of the show’s producers — especially when she chose to hang onto a flying helicopter using no safety equipment at all.

Over the ensuing decades, she’s worked steadily in an array of TV roles — including a guest arc on Smallville as a mind-controlling supervillain. The last time she graced the WW franchise was a cameo at the end of the Gadot-starring Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020. Whether Carter might dabble in that universe again is unclear, given that Warner Bros. is now completely rebooting its DC Comics universe — a process which took flight with the just-premiered Superman. As a result, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ben Affleck’s Batman and, yes, even Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman are all expected to be recast.

Monday, Acorn TV

Still best known for transcendent teen comedy Clueless, Alicia Silverstone has been quietly showing off her range of late in gritty dramas like The Lodge and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. This new series — coming to Acorn on Monday with a two-part premiere — continues that trend, casting the ’90s It girl as Fiona, an American lawyer whose take-noprisoners approach is fuelled, in no small part, by unresolved

issues with her deadbeat Irish father (Jason O’Mara). But when she suddenly gets a message from not-so-dear old dad, Fiona heads to Ireland, where she learns “the story of abandonment that has shaped her entire life was a lie — a lie intended to protect her and her mother from her father’s shady business dealings.” And so, “Fiona resolves to uncover the full truth about her father, and reconnect with the parent she only thought she knew.”

Kirby with frequent Crown director Benjamin Caron, who told Tudum: “What drew me to the film was its exploration of survival and sacrifice, and the idea of quiet heroism. It asks the question, ‘Who gets to feel safe, and at what cost?’”

He continued: “Vanessa brings a beautifully wild energy to Lynette, making the character unpredictable and deeply, deeply human. Together, we worked on creating a character who is simply not just reacting to the world, but desperately trying to wrest control of her future, even as she teeters on the edge of self-destruction.”

ALIENS Among Us

Reflecting on Hollywood’s most iconic franchises, Alien stands apart for being home to an eclectic array of directors, each of whom brought their own distinct sensibility to the film they helmed. Such legends as Ridley Scott, James Cameron and David Fincher have all made their mark. Now, the baton is passed to another unmistakable auteur — Noah Hawley, creator of FX’s Fargo. With this eight-part series, Hawley takes the acid-blooded Xenomorphs two places they’ve never been — the small screen and the Planet Earth.

A prequel set in the year 2120, two years before Scott’s original film, we open to find a ship packed with extraterrestrial monstrosities crashlanding on our little blue marble. This is in an age when humanity has redefined what it means to be human via the invention of androids, cyborgs and AI; avid fans know that these “synthetics” (previously played by the likes of Ian Holm and Michael Fassbender) have tended to be the most intriguing members of their

respective casts. So, we’re happy to report that artificial beings are frontand-centre in this new ensemble, led by Sugar alum Sydney Chandler (daughter of Friday Night Lights’ Kyle Chandler) and Justified’s Timothy Olyphant (pictured above).

Explaining his approach in a chat with The AV Club, creator Hawley mused: “My take on it is . . . if we take the ‘creatures’ out of Alien: Earth, is it a show? Is it a drama? Are there characters you’re invested in? If you build a great drama, and then add the monsters into it, now you’ve elevated it. If all you have is monsters, you’d better have 400 minutes of the most exciting creature stories ever told. But if it works dramatically, the creatures can be a tool in exploring the larger themes of the show, as well as adding horror, action and all those elements.”

The unruly reunion between estranged siblings Glen (Ryan Sampson, also the creator) and Lee (Danny Dyer, who earned a BAFTA for season one) continues this week with another six episodes — two of which debut Thursday evening.

Bawdy, irreverent, yet undeniably heartfelt, season two of the U.K. hit continues exploring divergent definitions of masculinity, brought into stark contrast by the on-screen pairing of two brothers who couldn’t be less alike. Glen is a neurotic, strait-laced carpet salesman, while Lee is a harddrinkin’ “man’s man.”

Picking up two weeks after the season-one finale, in which our lads learned their father wasn’t actually dead — he just abandoned them — Lee and Glen are responding to the trauma in very different ways. Lee stumbles around in a bathrobe, sitting on an old chair in the front yard of his brother’s flat, sucking down beers and listening to music — barely even noticing when teen passersby pelt him

But after locking lips with Lee in a moment of utter insanity last season, she finds herself at the mercy of a mysterious blackmailer who caught the smooch on camera.

All told, it’s not long before Lee regains his alpha male energy — for better and for worse — and the search for dad begins in earnest. But as the press release teases: “With secrets spilling and tempers flaring, it’s only a matter of time before the family blows up . . . again.”

ne more dose of animated absurdity that’s definitely not for kids comes from Genndy Tartakovsky, writer and animator of cult-hit series like Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack. This Netflix original film stars Pitch Perfect’s Adam DeVine as Bull, a rambunctious canine who learns his owners plan to neuter him. Looking to send his manhood off with a (literal) bang, he recruits pooches from around the neighbourhood for an adventure that will hopefully culminate in Bull being able to let the dog next door (voiced by Agatha All Along’s Kathryn Hahn) know how he feels about her before it’s too late.

during a chat with Tudum, Tartakovsky said: “Bull is every man. He is lovable, funny, witty and confident. Then at the same time, he is also nervous, shy, neurotic and anxious. A complete human, as a dog. His journey is quite simple. He believes that his powers come from his dangly bits, but he learns that it is what is inside that is important.”

The filmmaker furthermore mused: “I think it started out as an R-rated Lady and the Tramp — then as we got into it, it naturally became more cartoony and specific to itself.”

As Starz president Kathryn Busby said in a statement, this five-part series about the iconic strip club “is a riveting behind-the-curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture,” offering viewers “unprecedented insider access and history unveiled from those who built its empire.”

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

10:20 a.m., Crave1

Set 200 years before Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, this cartoon spinoff follows King Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox) and his daughter Héra (Gaia Wise) as they defend Rohan from a vengeful invader. ★★

affairs, Final Reckoning was a direct continuation of this 2023 blockbuster. Dead Reckoning sees Ethan and his team battling a rogue AI that can manipulate cyberspace and thereby bend humanity to its will. With criminals and world leaders alike eager to get their hands on this so-called “Entity,” only Ethan seems to realize that it cannot be harnessed, and must be destroyed. ★★★

Providence Falls: An Impossible Promise

8 p.m., W Network Hallmark’s three-film event unveils part two. Reincarnated Irish lovers Cora and Liam, now cops in modern North Carolina, hunt for a killer — while Liam tries to fulfil his cosmic duty and guide Cora to her true soulmate.

Mortal Kombat

8:45 a.m. & 9 p.m., CTV Sci-Fi With another adaptation of this gore-tastic video game hitting theatres in October, now is as good a time as any to revisit Hollywood’s original 1995 stab at the franchise — wherein a monk, a soldier and a movie star are recruited to fight in an interdimensional tournament that will decide the fate of our very species. ★★

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice

12:20 p.m., Crave1

Tim Burton’s 2024 follow-up to his own 1988 classic finds an all-grown-up Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) forced to strike a deal with the titular ghoul (Michael Keaton) after her daughter (Jenna Ortega) is lured into the netherworld by a duplicitous ghost. ★★

The Apollo

11:15 a.m., HBO Canada

Documentarian Roger Ross Williams (Music by Prudence) scored an Emmy to go along with his Oscar thanks to this HBO original about Harlem’s storied Apollo Theater, which has launched the careers of countless Black performers over the years. Interviewees include Patti LaBelle, Angela Bassett and Ta-Nehisi Coates

Bull Durham

8 p.m., Starz 2

This absolute home run of a baseball flick casts Kevin Costner as a washed-up catcher demoted to single-A to mentor an unwieldy pitcher (Tim Robbins). Alas, both men fall for a “groupie” (Susan Sarandon) who considers herself a muse of sorts, with a talent for getting sputtering careers back on track. ★★★

When his human mentor is eaten by a croc, a bountyhunting pig (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) carries on the woman’s work of returning lost animals to their owners . . . but things get complicated when he’s offered big money to find an elephant (Lilly Singh) who’s on the run from a hacky Vegas showman (Rainn Wilson).

Practical Magic

8 p.m., Starz 2

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock lead this 1998 fantasy romance as two sisters who are descended from a long line of witches — and burdened with a family curse that brings doom to any men who enter their lives. The long-awaited sequel is currently filming, set for a 2026 release. ★★

The Trouble

With Harry

3:15 p.m., TCM

One of Hitchcock’s lesserknown (but no less worthy) films mixes thrills, chills and dark comedy in the tale of a town that comes unglued when a local man turns up dead. The suspect list includes Shirley MacLaine, Edmund Gwenn and John Forsythe ★★★

One Day as a Lion

9:15 p.m., Crave1

Pitched as “a witty homage to Tarantino and the Coen brothers,” this offbeat caper stars Hawaii Five-0’s Scott Caan as a bumbling assassin whose failure to kill a target (J.K. Simmons) forces him on the run with a hostage (Marianne Rendón) — who soon becomes an unlikely partner-in-crime.

Meditation Park

12:40 p.m., Starz 2

Rising to fame in the ’60s as one of the first female action heroes, Hong Kong legend Cheng Pei-pei showed she didn’t need a sword to slay audiences in this drama about a 60-year-old Vancouverite who reinvents herself after learning her husband has a mistress. Sandra Oh plays her deeply concerned daughter.

Jurassic Park 3

6:25 p.m., Crave1

For the third chapter in his groundbreaking blockbuster franchise, Steven Spielberg handed the reins to Jumanji director Joe Johnston, as grumpy paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) is tricked into helping a desperate couple (Téa Leoni and William H. Macy) save their son from the dino-infested Isla Sorna. ★★

Darkest Miriam

8 p.m., Crave1

Being Maria

9:35 p.m., Crave1

In 1972, Bernardo Bertolucci released Last Tango in Paris, a controversial erotic drama starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider. Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

A new documentary looks back at the legacy of Steven Spielberg’s terrifying cinematic classic SHARK OF

In 1974, author Peter Benchley hit the bestseller list with Jaws, his novel about a massive great white shark terrorizing a New England beach community. Hollywood took interest, and the book was adapted for the screen — the second feature film from up-andcoming director Steven Spielberg.

The 1975 thriller proved to be a masterpiece that took the box office by storm, setting the template for the summer blockbuster while spawning a slew of sequels that, while popular, never quite lived up to the genius of the original.

To mark the film’s 50th anniversary, a new documentary, Jaws@50: The

JAWS@50: THE DEFINITIVE

INSIDE STORY

Friday, Disney+

Definitive Inside Story, looks back on Spielberg’s monumental achievement, exploring the movie’s legacy while also recalling the behind-the-scenes chaos that nearly scuttled the whole thing.

Shooting on a $3-million budget in the New England tourist enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, Spielberg encountered a string of unforeseen production delays that saw

A mechanical shark that seldom functioned as intended created serious problems for plucky young director Steven Spielberg and his crew — but also led to some brilliant creative pivots that turned Jaws into an enduring masterpiece.

OF GENIUS

“Jaws was a movie that I thought would really end my career — but is the film that began it.”

costs triple to $9 million, while what was supposed to be a 55-day shoot ballooned to 159 days. Meanwhile, the mechanical shark that had been custom-built for the movie was a disaster, seldom working the way it was supposed to, instead serving up one headache after another.

“In most circumstances, summer in the Vineyard is a dream. But when you are over budget and over schedule, and when I am over my head, that summer of 1974 was a bad dream before it ever became the dream of a lifetime,” Spielberg said in a video message shown to fans before a Martha’s Vineyard screening of Jaws@50.

“It details how young and unprepared all of us were for the challenges of shooting in the Atlantic Ocean with a mechanical shark that was more temperamental than any movie star I have ever worked with since, and how in the wake of running over schedule and budget, I truly believed that Jaws would be the last movie I would ever be given to direct,” Spielberg continued. Helmed by Laurent Bouzereau (Music by John Williams), Jaws@50 dives even

deeper, with Spielberg himself sharing profound insight into the making of the film. “Jaws was a movie that I thought would really end my career — but is the film that began it,” he says in the doc.

In addition, Bouzereau includes testimonials from cast and crew, and offers viewers a wealth of rarely seen archival footage. Meanwhile, actors and fellow filmmakers like J.J. Abrams, Emily Blunt, James Cameron, Cameron Crowe, George Lucas, Greg Nicotero, Jordan Peele, Steven Soderbergh, Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo del Toro also weigh in; the latter, in fact, still views Jaws as a Hollywood achievement that has yet to be topped. “The movie is as flawless today as it will be a hundred years from now,” declares del Toro.

“I really wanted to tell a human story, the human perspective of what it took to create a masterpiece,” Bouzereau told ABC7, explaining why this 1970s blockbuster has remained ingrained in the zeitgeist for a half-century. “It was part of culture-at-large, and then to have it be a legacy film, sort of — cinema was never

the same before Jaws and never the same after Jaws,” he said. “It’s really the icing on the cake and really makes you appreciate the artistry that went into it . . . because that is all Steven.”

Moreover, Jaws@50 includes conversations with leading marine advocates and scientists, including Philippe Cousteau, Candace Fields, Gibbs Kuguru, Austin Gallagher, Dr. John Mandelman of the New England Aquarium, Dr. Greg Skomal, photographer Brian Skerry and others — along with insights from Benchley’s widow, Wendy Benchley, a renowned ocean policy advocate and shark conservationist.

Even though the film seemed destined for failure, Steven Spielberg rode Jaws into the annals of cinema history.

So, what did Spielberg think of the finished product? According to Bouzereau: “Steven said, ‘Oh, it’s the best film you’ve ever made for me.’ I was happy — and I’m not bragging, I’m just quoting.” ■

SIMPLE PLAN: THE KIDS IN THE CROWD

Simple Plan look back on 25 tumultuous, chart-topping years together in a new documentary

If you were a teen in the early aughts, odds are Simple Plan was part of your playlist with tunes like “Perfect” and “Welcome to My Life.” Back in 2002, the rise to fame for the Quebec punk pop band seemed downright meteoric — their first album, No Pads, No Helmets . . . Just Balls, produced multiple chart-toppers and set them off on a world tour with fellow Canadian rock star Avril Lavigne. But the documentary Simple Plan: The Canadian pop-punk icons

L-R: Rhythm guitarist Sébastien Lefebvre, drummer Chuck Comeau, lead singer Pierre Bouvier and lead guitarist Jeff Stinco.

Kids in the Crowd unveils a more complex history of the pop-punk band.

Through the eyes of lead singer Pierre Bouvier, drummer Chuck Comeau, lead guitarist Jeff Stinco and rhythm guitar player Sébastien Lefebvre, The Kids in the Crowd takes a look at their now decadeslong trajectory, from garage band in Montreal to a recent 25th anniversary world tour. “It was a real eye-opener to see how much we’ve accomplished,” says Bouvier. “I feel like we’re a band that’s always had Imposter Syndrome. When you look at it as a movie, you realize all the incredible things that we need to be proud of ourselves for.”

The skeptical attitudes that critics

Above: Even though they don’t always see eye-to-eye, Pierre Bouvier and Chuck Comeau learned, back when they were just kids, to appreciate one another’s value — and not sweat the small stuff.

the band at the outset of their career is something still ingrained in Bouvier. “That was definitely difficult, and I’m glad we had each other to lean on because if I would’ve been a solo artist, it would’ve destroyed [me],” he says. “You’re going to remember the one [person] that says, ‘You guys suck.’ It definitely impacted us and left a mark that is still on us today. That’s where that chip on the shoulder came from. But it has also put a fire underneath us and made us want to be a better live band and put out better records to prove everybody wrong.”

While other groups from that era have long ago gone their separate ways, Simple Plan keeps on plugging along. Bouvier attributes that loyalty to having worked out their differences in the early days, but Comeau feels their shared history also plays a part. “We all came from the same school. We all have very similar families, backgrounds and values. I think that’s been tremendously helpful,” he reflects. “If you try to find the best guitar player, the best singer and the best drummer just to form this super-group, you end up with people that you don’t really know, people that maybe don’t have that much in common with. We were friends before we were bandmates. When things start to get tough and there’s tension, I think you can lean back on that shared background.”

Not that Simple Plan hasn’t had its moments of friction. “The first band that Chuck and I started, we realized quickly

The Kids in the Crowd gives Simple Plan a rare opportunity to not only share their story with fans and haters alike, but put their wild ride through the music industry into the proper personal context.

Chuck and I started, we realized quickly that even though we had the same goal, our personalities were clashing. And at the tender age of 18, that was too much for us to handle and I ended up kicking him out of the band that we were in,” Bouvier admits. “It made me realize that Chuck is obsessive at managing the business side of the band and I didn’t have that in my DNA. I focus on the art, on the music, on the performance . . . and the other part is not my passion. That breakup made me realize that while there’s going to be times in the future where I might really not want to hang out with him, I need someone like that if I want to get really far.”

The occasional flare-up between Bouvier and Comeau is still to be expected, but the two now take a different approach to their arguments. “Having that rupture at an early age made us understand that we can’t let that happen again,” says Bouvier. “When the tension gets high, instead of breaking up, we just have to sit there, hang out a little longer, communicate and make it work. And that’s why I think we’re still together.” There is also no one else that can appreciate the beauty of the experience like those who were there since the beginning. “We’ve put a lot of heart and soul and passion into this life and this band, and it’s our lives,” says Comeau. “The first 10, 15 years, it is your entire existence — and I still have that passion. [The documentary] made me realize just how full-on and how intense this ride has been.”

What will never lose its power for Bouvier and Comeau is hearing about what their old hits still mean to fans. “We have people coming up to us all the time telling us, ‘Man, if it wasn’t for you guys — for this song, for this band — I wouldn’t be here today,’” says Comeau. “The first time you hear that, you’re a bit skeptical. And then you hear it so many times that you realize these songs are not just ours, they’re the fans’. They’ve taken ownership of them and made them a part of their journey. So, when we play, we

“I really struggle with being proud of all the success that we’ve had. Having this documentary has been a great way to look back and tell myself, ‘Hey, you did pretty good.’”

don’t just play for us, we play for all these people.” If taking stock is something Simple Plan historically has had a hard time doing, The Kids in the Crowd now serves as a collective memory of their victories. “I really struggle with being proud of all the success that we’ve had,” says Bouvier. “Having this documentary has been a great way to look back and tell myself, ‘Hey, you did pretty good.’” ■

Amazing Race Canada’s Jon Montgomery reflects on his decade-plus journey as host of the homegrown reality competition

THE AMAZING RACE CANADA

Tuesday, 9 p.m., CTV

The Amazing Race Canada has embarked on its 11th season this summer — and former Olympic skeleton racer Jon Montgomery can barely believe it has been more than a decade since he became host of the hit reality battle. “It doesn’t sound real to say out loud,” he tells TV Week. “It feels like we’ve jumped into the Quantum Leap time machine and missed a bunch of years, but here we are.” Having already helmed the show 10 times, Montgomery still finds no difficulty keeping

I think the fact that people can see themselves on the show season after season, the racers and being able to go places that they’ve heard about, is compelling.’’

Brendan McDougall and Sam May competed as halves of separate teams in previous editions, but now return for season 11 as a dating couple.

the experience exciting. “Without effort, it feels fresh year over year,” he says. “The formula is what folks have come to know and love, and all you need to do is breathe new life into it by bringing new racers, going to new places and trying new challenges. Every season is brandnew.” We caught up with Montgomery to discuss the ongoing season and life lessons only The Amazing Race Canada can teach.

What is it that continues to make The Amazing Race Canada a unique series in this television landscape?

I think the fact that people can see themselves on the show season after season, living vicariously through the racers and being able to go places that they’ve heard about, is compelling. They know that this is home and these people are their neighbours from across this land. I think that’s why audiences continue to enjoy it, because they can literally insert themselves into the drama when they’re watching it. “Oh, you would do this, I would do that.” Whether you’re four or 104, you can get behind and enjoy The Amazing Race Canada on some level.

What’s the highlight of season 11?

Going above the Arctic Circle. We’ve never done that before. We are visiting our third coastline and can truly say now, “From coast to coast to coast,” after season 11. And we have new brilliant teams, dynamic relationships, some

new creativity from the producers of The Amazing Race Canada, making some special stuff just for us that other franchises don’t have — but they will next year because they always look to Canada for creativity and they steal from us [laughs].

What would you say is unique about the Arctic Circle endeavour?

First and foremost, when you go to a far-flung place, there are already people

there. It doesn’t matter where you go, somebody is calling it home. To go to a place so deeply rooted in tradition and to be in a community that has such reverence for Mother Earth is captivating to me, because I share reverence for those types of ideas, practices and the planet. I always get to ask questions about the community, about the land, about the people — and going to the north is truly special. For me, that’s what travelling is always about: going somewhere that you haven’t been, somewhere outside your comfort zone, meeting somebody new and doing something new.

What stands out about the contestants this season?

Oh, we’ve got amazing relationships. We’ve got our first grandmother on the show this year, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find her amongst the lineup. You’ll be like, “I don’t see a grandmother, but I’ve got to go with Marie because she’s the only one here that has an adult son.”

But Marie and Lou — I mean, I’m a mama’s boy just like Lou, so we had that meeting of the minds — but I could only imagine what it would be like and how hard it would be to run the race with my mother. What a truly special bonding experience for the two of them. And she is the oldest female competitor that we’ve had on The Amazing Race Canada. We’ve had a couple of other gentlemen who have exceeded her odometer, like Tim Sr. from Winnipeg

the unexpected in the

in season one. And we all know the Tim and Tim journey — becoming our first champions. So, age is but a number . . .

Who else is competing?

We’ve got Ika and Demetres, a married couple from Toronto. They started addressing fears before they even came on the show. Ika, particularly, doesn’t love heights, so she stood on the corner of her bed and looked down at the floor, and that was the beginning of her journey. I’ll tell you right now that it doesn’t stop at the edge of the bed. We continue to push her. Because I am a husband, I like to watch the husbands and wives compete to see how Darla [Montgomery]

granted, knowing one another so well, is that split-second to check what it is that you’re going to say before you actually say it. We lose that filter with those that we love the most, because we know inherently that they’re going to love us in spite of our warts.

Your life has changed so much this past decade. How have you changed since the start of The Amazing Race Canada? I have a better haircut, but less hair. I still can’t tan. You will always see me crimson red on the first day — because the day before we are out practising and I usually get scorched. So, that hasn’t changed, but my perspective on life, from having children to what’s truly important, those are the types of things that have changed about me. And my capacity to perform in the role as host. I continue season over season to find my way in the role, my voice, my pace, my capacity to perform and do the job that’s being asked of me. I love the challenge, and I will not stop trying to level up.

Would you say you’ve ultimately learned life lessons from the show?

The life lessons are abundant. How we talk to ourselves is so pivotal in our capacity to get anything done in life — and the realization that we’ll never get anything done alone. It is always going to require some level of synergizing. You might be the one that’s tasked with performing in the moment, but you need to pool your resources, collaborate with others to get monumental things done. Winning The Amazing Race Canada is one of those things. Raising children is another one of those things. And it doesn’t matter what it is, you’ve got to be ready to fall short to put the best of yourself out there. If it doesn’t measure up, you learn what you’ve got to do for a

valiant second attempt, a third, a fourth, until you finally get the outcome that you’re seeking or become that person that you weren’t prior to striving to perform and achieve.

Do you think this job has overtaken your Vancouver Olympics beer pitcher legacy? I hope not because, damn, I love that beer legacy! But they’re maybe becoming on par — the guy that drank the beer [at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games] is also the guy that is on The Amazing Race Canada. If all I’m ever known for is being the guy that drank the beer, I’m already lucky. But if I get to be known as the dude that hosted The Amazing Race Canada for however many seasons we get, I’ll be a very, very lucky lad. ■

Jesse Harink is bringing a dose of Pride to the competition.

hen it comes to storytelling, as Canadian Marshall McLuhan put it, “The medium is the message.” Films and TV shows are able to, if not “improve” a concept that originated in print, at least put an intriguing new spin on it. AMC’s The Walking Dead and Netflix’s Jessica Jones can attest to that. But it takes more than a simple storyboard to guarantee television success — especially in a world saturated with top-tier content from cable, streaming and the multiplex. Yes, in order to acquire and maintain a loyal fanbase, a story must have heart — something Prime Video is counting on to drive its newest thriller into homes across North America

Butterfly is a sixepisode series based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel of the same name written by Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett and illustrated by Antonio Fuso and Stefano Simeone. Delving deep into the inherently fraught nature of parent-child relationships, and the intricacies tied to personal identity, Butterfly stars Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0) and Reina Hardesty (It’s What’s Inside) as two elite covert agents who are also father and daughter — unexpectedly hurled back into each other’s lives when one is assigned to kill the other.

“Butterfly is a character-driven spy thriller that explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage,” reads

the official description, as provided by Amazon Studios. “It’s centred on David Jung [Kim], an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him, and he finds himself pursued by Rebecca [Hardesty] — a deadly, sociopathic young agent

Covert Affairs alum Piper Perabo gets back into the spy game as ruthless yet conflicted intelligence power player Juno. The Serpent Queen’s Louis Landau plays her son, Oliver.

assigned to kill him, and Caddis, the sinister spy organization she works for.”

When, per the trailer, David acknowledges that he faked his own death and led young Rebecca to believe him dead for the past 20

years, the father-daughter duo must face the impact of David’s problematic decisions and try to heal their strained relationship while also outrunning Juno (Piper Perabo), a “brilliant, formidable, Machiavellian woman” who, according to Variety, was once a successful lawyer before she “came to the conclusion that she needs power and money to get anything done in this world.” Now a fierce, protective mother and the high-powered CEO of an intelligence agency, Juno “will often tamp down [her vulnerabilities] when they conflict with her goals.”

Not unlike David, Juno is staring down a broken relationship with her own adult child, Oliver (The Serpent Queen star Louis Landau).

The adaptation comes from showrunner Ken Woodruff, who previously worked on The Mentalist, Gotham and La Brea, among other projects, and Korean-American author Steph Cha, who wrote tense 2019 sociopolitical tome Your House Will Pay: A Novel, set during the 1992 human rights riots in L.A. Although Butterfly is based primarily in South Korea rather than stateside, like her novel, Cha’s respected commentary on

“Butterfl is the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply.”

race politics and deep interpersonal relations remains at the heart of the show.

Teasing the series in an official statement, leading man Kim opined: “Butterfly is the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers, and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply. I couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled, both in front of and behind the camera, and I’m grateful to Ken Woodruff, BOOM! Studios, 3AD, Amazon and everyone else who helped bring it to life.” ■

Back in 2003, Disney struck gold with a remake of 1976 comedy Freaky Friday, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan playing Tess and Anna Coleman, a mother and daughter who wind up swapping bodies. More than two decades later comes this “freakquel” in which Anna is now the mother of a teenage daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and is about to become stepmother to another teenage girl, Lily (Sophia Hammons), as she prepares to marry fiancé Eric (Manny Jacinto). Amid the myriad challenges of blending their families, a run-in with a fortune teller (Vanessa Bayer) at Anna’s bachelorette party causes lightning to strike again — only this time, Anna swaps bodies with her daughter, while Tess and Lily find themselves in each other’s bodies.

REVIVAL

Thursday, 7:15 p.m. & 11:25 p.m., CTV

QLike Wynonna Earp, Revival is based on an Image Comics graphic novel. How do the two compare and contrast?

AWell, that’s so funny. One of my first things was like, “I can’t try to copy Wynonna.” I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to differentiate enough, because I know it’s so special and deserves to be left intact and I shouldn’t be just ripping it off. So, it was really an attempt to go, “What are the differences here?” And for me, right off the bat, she’s a single mother — with not-great hair [unlike Wynonna].” Don’t tell my hair guys that [laughs]. She’s just trying to get through the day as a single mother with a really hard job — but ultimately, she actually does want to be doing this. Whereas, I think Wynonna always kind of rebelled against what she was doing. Wynonna, especially at the beginning, was like, “I don’t want this, I can barely hold a gun and I’d rather be elsewhere.” Dana wants to be elsewhere, but it’s because she wants to get away from her family — feeling a bit claustrophobic in a town that feels claustrophobic. She wants the opportunities that she can get somewhere else, so that she can rewrite her story.

QThis show really puts its own spin on the genre, with zombies that are mostly just regular people with whom the rest of the town must find some way to co-exist . . .

AThe magic of genre is that you can kind of do whatever you want. And so, when you say it’s a “zombie show” and people expect something, then you get to come in

SEASON FINALE

MEMORABLE ROLES: You’ve seen her on Kiefer Sutherland’s Designated Survivor as slippery White House correspondent Lisa Jordan; boozy wildcard Mrs. McMurray on Letterkenny ; and Cpt. Pike’s fellow captain-with-benefits Marie Batel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. But this Ottawa native is, no doubt, best known as quick-shootin’ demon hunter Wynonna Earp on the cult-hit comic book series of the same name.

CURRENT GIG:

Nowadays, Melanie Scrofano leads Revival, an offbeat horror mystery about one conflicted Wyoming deputy who must somehow keep the peace when the dead start coming back to life.

and go, “Actually, guess what else it could be!” You get to go, “It could also be true crime.” You can do all of these cool things with it that you haven’t seen before. It’s a fun twist that is hopefully refreshing to people.

QYou’re also a producer here. What was your approach to finding the right way to adapt Revival for a visual medium?

AWith Wynonna, the biggest takeaway for me was . . . we weren’t so married to [the comic] that it was a chokehold. Because I think when you’re trying to just replicate it exactly, there’s no room to breathe — and I do think people get disappointed when it doesn’t have its own life . . .

Especially on a show like this where we’re not dealing with a massive budget. It would be nice to replicate everything we want to replicate, but at a certain point you’ve got to get creative and start going, “OK, well, we can’t do this, but what can we do, and how can we best do it?” That’s where real magic comes. That’s where the real creativity happens. Don’t get me

wrong, I’d take 10 extra dollars, but we’re so blessed as creatives to have the problem of overcoming challenges, because it just makes us better.

QWynonna Earp has such a diehard fandom. What is your most memorable encounter with a viewer?

AI have so many. People would come up and say, “You taught me — Wynonna taught me — that my vulnerability can be my greatest strength.” Because I’m such a vulnerable person, I really open myself up to pain a lot, and I actually always thought of it as a weakness. I hated how easily I cry. And for people to say, “You taught me that’s actually my greatest superpower, my crying can be a strength, and it’s courageous,” shifted my whole perspective on life. It made me want to offer that to other people that I work with now — like actors that I’m directing; I want to allow them to feel safe in being who they are, because somebody out there is going to see themselves in it and feel the strength of what they offer.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
